I don't for a second even in 2016 believe that there isn't redundant power. If one wire could take out all power there would be a lot more ships sinking. Maybe in the 70s but not this day and age there's back up power. And if there isn't you're working on iron that predates most people on board. Most maritime accidents come from human error not mechanical.

I've been in that situation with a fire in the engine room as a mechanic/engineer. First, it's not a five minute evac/fix with the CO2 going off. Second, it's not a 15--30 minute fix to get moving again. Third, All the dang wires are too short and usually have to be removed from panels to jury rig a bypass to get home. I had to sacrifice an engine room exhaust fan harness to power the air compressor. But yea, that def get the adrenaline going.

Fire onboard a vessel are absolutely terrifying. Which is somewhat ironic since you are surrounded by water.
And that's also the problem. You can't get to safety when things go really bad.
I worked on a ferry, we had a car catch fire down in the car hold. It's designed to contain a fire but still. It was the most terrifying hour I've experienced.
In the end one car totally burned out and a few were badly damaged. It could have gone so much worse

@@L33tSkE3t Some vessels are built with two switchboards. You have the main switchboard which is fed by the auxiliaries and you'll have the emergency switchboard that's fed by the emergency generator. In case of a power failure in the MSB some essential systems like lightning will automatically disconnect themselves from the MSB and instead be fed by the ESB. In such a setup you don't have a lot of battery powered equipment since it's considered extremely unlikely you will have lost both the MSB and the ESB at the same time.
On the cargo vessel where I work the only battery backups we really have are for bridge equipment. 230V UPS systems for critical navigational equipment and the stability computer, 24V backups for GMDSS (radios etc...) and separate 24V backups for critical equipment like telegraph, controls, fire detection/alarms and the like. The way our vessel is built means that if you have a fire or other incident severe enough to knock out both the MSB and the ESB or all the power generation, it means that the vessel in all likelihood is completely uncapable of sailing under own power even if we manage to resolve whatever caused it and even more likely the situation will be severe enough that Abandon Ship is the likely course of action.

Scariest thing ever. But I know a lot of people are saying why didn't they have flashlights in hand. Well be in their shoes. First panic comes into their mind and not only that it is pitch black and they can't see a thing. And they probably didn't think about their cell phones. And when something like this happens you can't think clearly because panic and all other things start going on. If you see lights flickering like that that is almost a sign of a fire. Because in my town there was a fire across our street and our lights in our house were flickering. I could be wrong but I am just saying and stating my opinion.

Worked on some jobs that has lots of moving and carrying, phones gets smashed, water or sand or mud or whatever else splashed on them, and you can't use very well with gloves on anyway. As for the light on them, anything beside small spaces and rooms, if you take it outside or larger spaces, anything more than 2-3 steps away that light is pitifully small in a pitch black setting, add in smoke and it's even worst. Small spaces the light can bounce and reflect back from objects and walls making it look brighter, open space is just a sea of darkness.

You do not fight a fire by becoming a casualty. Not only is that type of foul weather gear flammable, but it also contains materials that will effectively turn into heat shrink, causing terrible burns over large portions of the body, if it is heated past a certain point. As a bonus, many of the types of materials used in foulies give off highly toxic gases if they combust. So not only are you a casualty, there is a significant chance you just severely injured/killed your crewmates via gas exposure.

ABC and BC POWDER can cause damage in Electric systems - Both switches and wire ends…
      Maybe try Google 🤷🏼‍♂️
(Edit) i could not leave a link taking you away from UA-cam - So i provided you with some copy-paste:
BC - The standard type of dry powder fire extinguisher, which is filled with sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate was initially developed for liquid fires (Class B) involving burning petrol, solvents, oils etc. and Class C fires involving flammable Gases. They have generally been superseded by the more versatile ABC powder extinguishers. Like all powder extinguishers, after use they leave a residue which may cause damage to sensitive electrical / electronic equipment.
ABC - This is the most used and most popular multipurpose powder fire extinguisher and as the name implies can be used on class A (burning solids), B (liquid fires) and C ( Gases) fires, and is filled with mono-ammonium phosphate powder. The powder also leaves a residue that could cause damage to electrical equipment. (Use CO2 extinguishers for electrical fires).

Edgar, "We're just hanging on, sir. Main energizer is out!" (But in a Scottish accent)
    Captain, "Try auxiliary power!"
    Edgar, "Aye, sir."

Sooner or later you get to an age when you realise school was a complete waste of time. Once you can read, write and count, the rest is all just a big distraction. Learn a trade. Electrics, plumbing, welding, mechanics etc and you're good.

Edgar is my type of guy. Not many of us in the world. We look rough, and dumb, but there isn't a thing man has made we can't find an answer for. Sad the state of regular aptitude these days.

Do they do any routine maintenance on these boats? I've been watching other clips of this show and seems like a lot of the mechanical failures on these boats could have been caught with basic inspections and routine replacement of critical parts.

    • @TheChapelx
      @TheChapelx Рік тому +5

They do. Some boats do seem to slack off on it but the Northwestern crew was always one to keep the boat in the best condition they could. Problem is a lot of these boats are decades old and some of the stuff on them is nearly that. You also have to remember that they are operating in an extreme environment and can end up running for weeks straight with very little breaks.

F/V Northwestern was built in 1977. I wouldn't be surprised if other boats are similar.

Of course not, you never do routine maintenance and inspections on commercial seafaring vessels, you simply go out and pray for the best.

Not sure if it's good to bad mouth folks that went to school to learn something. Just as I avoid bad mouthing folks that did not go to school but know things. Both journeys can go well, horribly bad, or somewhere in between. All the bad mouthing just keeps the division alive & well.
