Bro, your ship beginning to flood uncontrollably is one thing, but then right after for all power to fail and emergency lights are flashing at you in the pitch darkness with an uncontrollable flood, that's pure nightmare fuel. Props to Jake for stepping the f**** up
That's what I like to see, a captain actually taking charge of a situation and doing what needs to be done for himself, crew and ship. Quick thinking, experience and the ability to work under pressure saved their arse here no doubt. Respect to the woman welding and stuff to, she did an awesome job
Jake's niece first trip on a crab boat. not exactly ideal for a first experience on wheel watch. Jake has a better variety of experience than some captains. He worked under Sig.
The welded piece must be so worm and she brings in hand. Respect
I give credit to jake every time he steps up and does what needs to get done. Sometimes he's an emotional mess other times it shows his determination but the majority of the time the kid steps up always always proves to us that he's not one trick pony. Kudos Jake.
I love how you call him "kid" when in reality he's probably more of a man than you are. I Highly doubt you're the captain of a crab boat in the Bering Sea
Damn that is a hightech ship. Red lamp and alarm goes of because flotilla sensor register water over a certain level. Some keyboard punches, boom, camera straight on the pipe problem.. Those two capteins are fixer heroes, really...
Poor Jake is going to be the next guy to have a heart attack. It just goes to show that it really doesn't take much time to go from normal to damn near sinking the ship with everyone on it. The gal did a hell of a job welding that coupling in an emergency when time isn't something that they had. She definitely saved their butts on that one.
Yeah, he's only 41 year old but his body has taken a lot of damage in part of his previous drug addiction(and continued heavy smoking) along with the stress of working and running a boat. Similarly Sig Hansen basically has a foot in the grave right now where he's probably one more widow maker heart attack away from death and the future doesn't look much brighter for Jake sadly.
@@mrfafaa96 agreed. I can't imagine that a crabbing fish captains life expectancy is all that long due to the very stressful quotas that must be met, worrying about your crew, lack of sleep add the cigarettes and coffee and all of the other worries that I don't even know about. I am sure that it takes years off of their lives. It's one of the reasons why I love the show. You definitely have to be a bad ass to work in the commercial fishing industry especially crab fishing.
@@mrfafaa96 well he's new Stigg to get his heart busted... -.-
@@Abacadabraholmes coffee is actually healthy... just not by the gallon.
@@dirtysouthbushcraftandmma9770 LOL, Exactly
This was like watching Edgar back in the old days at Northwestern running to the engine room coming up with solutions out of nowhere. Without a doubt, Jake had the best teachers as well as knowledge, as well as a luxury team as a crew.
The amount of courage this man who started his life as fisherman at a teenager is astounding. Most men would buckle and call for help when your only life support aka your boat is sinking but he stood in the pinch zone and got the job done.
From greenhorn to absolute badass captain. It’s been inspiring watching jake grow up to say the least
Ain't nothing like waking up and having something that causes you to panic. Obviously the thing that does it for me, being late to work, is no where near as serious as having your ship start to slowly sink but it still gets the heart going.
Well I guess I'm not going to finish that nap! (Shakes for 3 hours)
He definitely is a badass captain. It's really impressive to see how dedicated he is to the Saga and his crew
Hell of a way to wake up with the boat taking on water. Jake turned on beast mode and handled business!
Jake is A grade captain material, man's got nerves of steel
A grade A captain would have immediately ordered the seacock valve to be closed, stopping the ingress of water. But that wouldn’t have been dramatic enough for tv.
@@boataxe4605 to be fair, man just woke up. i would've fallen down the stairs and broke my neck lol
Jake is an absolute gangster. Well done crew
That cigarette she was smoking at the end must be one of the best she’s ever had
I just love the teamwork here. Jake's old instincts kicked in to solve the problem. The crew worked as a team in the engine room and Mack immediately realizing they may lost control starts contatcting for help just in case.
Seems like all the upgrades to the cameras and alarm systems are paying off. Jake is definitely my favorite captain right now and it seems like he has found a good crew as well.
I never noticed/knew he put cameras and new alarms. Definitely a life saving move. I remember when he was a greenhorn/new guy and looking at him now, he IS a Captain and no one can tell him otherwise.
@@MMCxXxHawk Bit late to respond, sorry about that. Yeah he has several 4K cameras on the boat and has made A LOT of other upgrades as well. The channel Boat Life has uploaded some homemade videos that Jake has made himself where he shows all the upgrades he's made and explains the choices he's made, for instance why he keeps the captains deck all black and purple. Here's the video going over the 4K camera system: ua-cam.com/video/B_6S1HC23E8/v-deo.html
Honestly I think he has the best crew out there, hands down. Freddy might be the best deckhand for enthusiasm and experience/skill, but otherwise Mason's a great engineer, Mack is a hell of a veteran deckhand who knows what to do in situations (didn't skip a beat, immediately placed a distress call as soon as the situation escalated without waiting for a report and those minutes could wind up saving lives), Shyanne having nerves of steel and being a greenhorn good enough to do welding work to fix a ship that is legitimately going to sink otherwise, and then deck boss Nick being one of the more understated bur professional ones in the show. Jake has surrounded himself with talent, and is most importantly never hesitating to jump into a situation himself when he needs to. He was an engineer and it shows.
Thats a real captain right there.
Jake is going to be the next Sig.
Shyanne: I'm having a great time
The Saga: We'll see about that
Jake needs some luck. Seems like has a bad run more than most. C'mon Jake your one of my favourite captains of the fleet.
No needs a much more comprehensive inspection process including NDT inspections.
Don’t worry about jake. He’s gonna go down as a legend like Phil Harris.
@@ethanporto1745 The way he's smoking it's likely sadly.
Don't worry. He's fine. It's all scripted. Last season it was Josh and Casey. Everytime they turned around the Cornelia Marie had one crisis after another. The Wizard also had their turn
@@Morty1172 it’s definitely not all scripted. I’ve worked 4 seasons as a deckhand on the Brenna J (boat that’s not on the show) Shit actually does go wrong every year for damn near every boat in the fleet. That’s why these men make so much money doing it. The injury rate working the Bering sea is literally 100% everyone gets hurt. Most full share deckhands can handle it but every year there’s new sets of greenhorns that won’t ever return. The drama between captains might be made up but the fishing and shit going wrong is very real.
This dude hits every wall ya can think of and keeps pushing ahead. That's passion
Jake is a true go getter and will do what he has to to make it work. A good captain and I hope and wish awesomeness for his future.
Now THAT’S one BADASS CAPTAIN. He held it together. And hats off to Shyanne; she handled that like a BOSS.
Couple times I've seen Jake save the day. That has to be scary. Steel ships sink quick.
Not as quick as rubber ones
It's good to see Sean back in the seat
Good shit Jake, Shyanne and crew! Jake, your leadership as a Captain keeps growing! Shyanne!? Id want you as a soldier with your ability to adapt to the situation and remain calm with critical tasks at hand. Great job being quick to alert the situation, and amazing job reacting to the problem as needed while the rest of the crew handles their part.
Amazing crew.
Holy cow Jake is a beast. Dude grabbed that coupler bare handed after just being welded on. Took that burn like a Boss 😅
When your engines start to fail and your waist deep in water and accelerating i think the last thing your worried about is burns
almost like its... a TV show .... weird huh
@@anglermatt mate a vessel taking on water in the engine room is not something a tv show is going to do for drama
She handed it to him bare handed too - tough chick for sure!
@@anglermatt When are you guys going to accept that not every dramatic thing on the show is made up?
That girl is no joke
A green horn who immediately got her captain up and made aware of the situation with the boat, welded a piece of pipe on a rocking boat while its flooding is a bad ass women. Also she is very good looking im not going to lie
Hell No! She’s One Badass Chick!!💯
Fukin jake is an extremely well rounded captain. Not only an awesome cap but his best engineer. Well done captain jake.
All things considered, the team handled that really well.. Especially Captain Jake. Respect.
That was hardcore! Whole crew handled business! Thats a good group of humans!
Jake is a quick thinker under stress he’s an underrated captain
Dude Charlie’s a great sea captain! Mack and Dennis would be proud.
😆😆😆 I see it
Good job boss , that is what a captain is defined as Taking care of the ship and crew 😎
Very impressive work. Crazy how talented Jake and his crew are
Wow, what a close call, and quick reaction!
That girl is gnarly, especially at the end hackin a cig
I have Raynaud’s syndrome. A severe reaction to any cold object, especially cold water. I’m amazed by Jake and everyone working in this environment. Well done.
What would happen if you took an ice bath? Just curious...
@@dirtysouthbushcraftandmma9770 Simply, the reaction is very quick. Fingers, hands, and sometimes feet mimic frostbite. Circulation slows, skin turns pale and/or bluish, and is numb. Pins and needles feeling only. Takes aggressive warming to reverse. Slow process. Tissue not “damaged “ but feels like it. Is auto-immune disease.
@@dirtysouthbushcraftandmma9770 basically your blood vessels in areas like your fingers and toe spasm and block blood flow until you warm back up. Nothing serious but it can cause complications if blood flow doesn't return for a long time.
Source: The multiple cross-country runs my high school made us do in the middle of winter
The captains seat looks awesome now with all those pretty lights.
Don't know who this Shyanne character is but she reacted pretty well waking Jake right away and that actually isn't the worst stick weld I've ever seen on a pipe fitting considering it was absolute chaos in that engine room and that thing was wet, dirty and crusty as shit even with good flux core welding rods that isn't an easy one.
Jake seems to have a very good crew at the moment. Seems like despite the grief he caused them Jake learned a lot from Sig and Edgar.
Jake deserves all the credit he can get as a Captain, he’s stepped up and been the first to be hands on with significant issues almost every time.
when the lights turned off and jake was still in the water in engine room that was crazy disasters happen like that
Just discovered this man, the balls on this man are made of steel holy crap
Jake is becoming a Legend!
They could've turned on the auxiliary generator a little sooner. No drama and theatrics in that 🤣
I'm glad to see ladies finally starting to fish. I remember Sig was SUPER worried about Mandy when she kept asking him to let her fish, and that's why he was reluctant to say "yes." They call this show "Deadliest Catch" for a reason. It's said that this is the most dangerous job on the planet. As we saw in this clip. So, Mandy finally got started. And now, Shyanne is here. It's great to see ladies doing that now. And, Shyanne did a wonderful job.
Gay
@@johanneswestman935 You don’t have to let everyone know your gay…🤷♂️😂
Let’s be honest the chicks are on it just to tick the gender boxes, I mean if this chick is a greenhorn, how the hell is she allowed to man the wheel whilst Jake sleeps? All for TV equality woke BS.
I never seen shyanne move so quickly she knew it had to be something super dangerous when it read Blige
Greenhorn that can man the wheelhouse and weld repairs on the spot... that isn't no damn greenhorn
So true! Shyann is a true badass chick!! I think she earned a step up as a deckhand, she ain’t no damn greenhorn anymore in my opinion!!
One minute your bedding down and in the next your fighting for your life.
Great job! What a way to wake up!
Can i just point out how jake grabbed a freshly welded part barehanded without flinching?!?
Jake is just getting better and better
nicely done
That Shayanne is incredible. Super impressed.
I do admire that Jake has grown to be an accomplished captain, but the man is a nervous wreck. I also understand keeping the safety of the boat and the crew a number one priority, but the guy needs to relax himself down from time to time.
Jake and the crew did a great job getting that under control if they would have panicked too much or not have known what to do properly the sage and the crew would have been in huge huge danger
Intensely intense ! WOW
That whole crew did a great job
God dam could you imagine having to jump in freezing water after you just woke up.
The camera man always survived
The discovery cameras are battery powered and probably waterproof. 1 cameraman was nailed by a table. That guy Mac must have called the saga's chase boat just in case they needed a rescue.
Way to go captain jake, you saved your ship and your crew. That was a no joke moment, glad you had the ability to adapt and overcome, had tee engine room flooded it would have probaly been the end, your crew did a nice job expiditing no fighting or miss understanding your orders , near by boat did good by uaving your back in case of abandon ship, your never out if the fight.
“ gonna lose the boat” like discovery ain’t paying this dude bank wouldn’t write a blank check to keep one of the members on the show
They’re in the middle of the Bering Sea, if the boat goes it’s entirely possible they could die.
@@flowerfaerie8931 they have a chase boat less than a mile away. Did you NOT see the AIS screen? It’s all dramatized now. Old DC was great, new DC is just discovery trying to breathe life into a show that unfortunately needs to die.
@@robdog1245 On a tv show, yeah they’ll probably be fine, but OP is acting like losing the boat is the only reason to be concerned about it sinking and that’s not anywhere close to true.
A great captain knows how to get the job done Jake is a great captain his luck will change.
He's gonna lose everything if he DOES keep going. Money can be replaced, but that boat can't be. It's The Saga. 👍
this was gnarly!
Definitely one of the scarier moments in Deadliest Catch history.
Jake was fantastic!
Jake's a beast
Don’t stop now jake. You’ve worked to hard to lose everything now.
The adrenaline kept him warm fr fr
I would start crying
Cool, calm and collected these guys aren't.
How about the greenhorn welding.
This like something out of a movie scene
What a way to wake up, jeeeeeeeze
Its intensely amazing how those guys sleep on the vessel... I would be a nervous train wreck
the welds arent even hot? lol
This was so scary to watch
I mean I don’t know much, but it couldn’t have been that dire if they were able to shoot shyanne handing Jake the coupling more than one time haha
Credit to that girl. Few people can weld a coupling that size in 30secs
Happened to us our engine was half way in the water and we had to stop water from coming in and had no engine that was a scary one
WOW! Bad fishing and a bad boat….drama on top of drama😬😞❤️🙏
Legend says that Jake is still screaming for Mason to this day
Jake was in that freezing Bering Sea water for a long time.
Its like trying to type while your hands are submergeed in an ice chest
Poor jake goes to sleep for two seconds and the saga is sinking 😂
Jake is a badass.
We’ll that’s scary
That’s a nice way to wake up lol
This scene is giving me COD flashbacks. MASON!!
Damn!!!!!!
I personally think that all this terrible breakdown stuff/bad luck Jake is dealing with is good for him as a captain.
...remember,...iron is refined in fire.
He is certainly turning into Sig mark 2
I’d think they’d have some sort of back up manual bilge pumps.
Maybe, but there's no way they could have manually pumped out that much water
4:50 it’s like a scene from Titanic
That must be an absolutely terrifying situation to be in. I would be freaking out and not know what to do.
Edit: You can hear the absolute terror in his voice.‘I can’t imagine what he was going through or feeling in that moment.
Couldn’t figure out who Jake looked like but I finally got it. Looks like Charlie Day.
Good luck
Oh my. The bilge almost overflowed with the pumps off. Whole ship almost sank.
That’s a captain I would want running my boat
Jake and Charlie Day: “We’re crab people now”.
Do they not look alike?
Why does it seem like everything hits the fan after the captain goes on break?
