I have to add this in every video that talks about democracy, especially from a western POV. Just because you can vote, does not mean you have democracy. Just because you have the facade of elections does not mean you have power at any level of the power structure of your society. This is more so in capitalist controlled countries because there is a lot of pretending of democracy in these countries but when push comes to shove, the gloves come off and you see how much "democracy" you actually have.

Edit: wow guys, thank you for the replies. It's good to know that you have some power over the local officials and policies throughout the country. So does that mean you can also change the representatives in the Parliament, even though it's only one party?

@@greendsnow Yes they do. They have another process call Whole Process Democracy. It works on a petition, consultation feedback loop where the government engages the public and the public make demands and being consulted on policies. It works at lower level at the local level and upper level during their big meetings. Politicians are elected at local level and they have to work their way up, being promoted only when they have proven themselves and acknowledge by their peers. If they screwed up because they are incompetent and cause problems, they get demoted or fired. Or worse they get caught with corruption and if it is really bad, they face the firing squad.
Chinese people do protest and that usually exposed underlying policy problems and the government make adjustments all the time. It goes back and fro. It's why the Chinese people has such high satisfaction with their government. Of course, no system is perfect but policies do change and officials do get fired and corruption do get clamped down. You won't get this level of approval if the people do not feel like their needs are met and their voices are heard. That's democracy.
Now tell me when was the last time a major shift in policies happened in the west because the people demand it. Not superficial stuff like low ball social issues. I'm talking about healthcare, wages, the economy, regulating Wall St., stopping wars from happening.
NOTE that I have been replying to some of your comments but this platform has chosen to shadow remove many of them because the AI is removing comments contrary to western narratives once I trigger it. It won't remove this comment because it has too high of an engagement now. This is what free speech in the west is like; you are not allowed to go against the official narrative.
I have lived in the US for many years, went to college there and even used to be married to an American so when I say voting in the US literally does not matter, I know what I'm talking about.

There is a fundamental difference in how Americans, Chinese, and Asians in general see Freedom. To American or Westerners, freedom is perceived as "Freedom To", to Chinese/ Asians, it is more like "Freedom from". Take the extreme example, the firearm. To Americans, the right to bear firearms is a form of freedom. To Chinese/Asians, freedom from fear of getting hurt/killed in random firearm violence is freedom. Who is right or wrong is only about mindset and perspective.

uh no, dude. the West's philosophy is based on the sovereignty of the individual, all of whom have been granted their rights by their Creator (god, which in context means "not man, a man or men). thus, rights cannot be taken away and we consider these rights unalienable.
so part of our philosophy is, logically, freedom FROM being ruled by a dictator. a priori, our rights are ours, and we are "free from men (a king, dictator, tyrant) taking our rights from us".
the second amendment isn't "freedom to" it's "freedom from tyranny".
so your attempt at being intellectual and clever has been debunked.
i think the 4th amendment even reads "freedom from illegal search and seizures..." let's check...
"“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause..."
exactly...so yet another one of the bill of rights reading "from" as "against". secure AGAINST unreasonable searches and seizures.
      shall i continue?

Let’s put it this way, a pretty girl in a mini dress can walk down any street in China at 2AM and nothing will happen to her. She won’t even feel unsafe. For everyone else you are virtually guaranteed never to have to face violent crime at any point in your life. That’s real freedom
In the US, most women have to be careful when they go out at night. Basically this completely removes her REAL freedoms cause she’s now regulating when she can go out at night. If she was truly free, she should be able to go out at any hour of night wearing anything she wants. But there just not reality.
In the US most cities have ghettos and parts of towns where everyone should avoid. In China, there aren’t “bad” areas cause even low income parts of every citing are just as safe as rich areas (it might look run down but that’s not a safety issue)
If she is out she has to have her guard up. Even if she has a concealed carry permit, she could get ambushed by rapids.

Thats so funny! The point you made about how quiet it is walking next to the main roads. I went for my very first time to China this year. Shanghai, I checked in to my hotel went for a walk, that’s what I love to do. To discover the place. After 5 mins of walking I was like, why can I hear the birds? Why am I hearing the wind blowing through the leaves. All scooters are EV there. That’s so incredible. The buses are EV most cars are EV.
Considering my profession is to modify and make cars faster/louder I never thought I would say that ever.
    Beautiful experience.

Westerners likes to talk about the lack of freedom in China. When a country is too slack on their laws and regulations, you face a declining society like the US or England.
China is similar to Singapore during Lee Kwan Yew era. Western media used to label Singapore as a communist country too. What's wrong with strict laws and regulations if it comes with safety and a well governed country. Deng Xiao Peng has done what Lee Kwan Yew did and done it very well. See how fast China is able to progress and curb corruption.
I'm a Singaporean living in Taiwan for the past 5 years. Democracy here but its a joke. Corruption everywhere. Triads and government officials caught in KTV sessions drinking. You really want this kinda democracy?
Look at the pathetic subways in NewYork and London and then look at China's metro. Every Western UA-camr that has gone to China is astounded by it. Only the fools that are stuck in the poor US are still fooled by the Western media. Travel and see with your own eyes. Don't talk about metro in Taiwan. Taichung metro took more than 10 years to build because of corruption. They kept paying money to the builders and it kept getting delayed. You want this kinda government that's not held accountable?
I've been to China recently. It's a Chinese government organised trip for Taiwanese youth to learn more about their own chinese history. Western media always talks about China going to attack Taiwan to get back it's land. But in actual fact, China are doing the soft approach. By educating the youths of Taiwan about their own Chinese culture and history. We were treated like VIPs and toured many historical sites and get to know about the history of the Three Kingdoms.
US only knows how to instigate wars and sell arms to countries for profits. Their politicians buy Arms stocks LEGALLY. And by creating wars, their stocks soar. People need to be educated about these things. Sadly, because the world population are mostly educated in English. The west controls the media. Only in recent years, are there more and more Western professors and important figures speaking about China WITH FACTS.
Freedom comes with a price. You want a safe country or a country where everyone can do whatever the fuck they want? People used to say Singagapore is too strict. You can't even chew gums, you get caning for these and that. I'm an ex convict. The mistakes i made in my youth. I totally accept the consequences. Now that I'm older. I can understand why it's better to have a stricter government.

Well well my friend, I am a Jakartan here and can't help but feel the same on Taiwan's democracy. I went to visit it on early April 2024. Things look rather stuck in time even in Taipei. Cash payment is still the norm in tourist-heavy districts like Xi Men Ding. For crying out loud, I never have to reach that much cash from my wallet that often since 2018-2019 in greater Jakarta area😊. This proved somewhat shocking to me since the Taiwan that I saw in 2013 was still noticeably ahead of Indonesia by no less than 10-15 years.
No wonder, the late Mr LKY openly showed his scepticism on Taiwan & SK "democracy" right in front of the the last British governor of HK, Chris Patten.

When China was dirt poor and undeveloped, many Chinese left to seek a better life abroad all over the world. They faced racism, physical and verbal abuse, and discrimination in the countries they went to and many still do. Compared to the Chinese diaspora born overseas, Taiwanese and Hongkongers don't realise how privileged they are in that they are able to work, study and settle in mainland China freely.

      美国街上带酒精是非法的, 因为美国历史上的禁酒令 , 而禁酒令的原因非常有趣...
      一切都是因果.

Have been Studying and working in American for over 20 years, i can say there there were huge gaps between China and US in 90s, with China opened up, the gaps narrowed rapidly, now in many area China has surpassed US. I was so shocked when i back to my home town in 2008, it used to a poverty county, new high way paved, all old houses were gone and new beautiful modern concrete buildings every where. I really thought i went to wrong place. Its like a dream. i thought i was doing ok with my high tech job in US, but a few years later i went back home again, this time i learned that i was the poorest person in my family. As far as freedom, democracy, i would ask does a regular person in US have any influence to big cooperation not to out source jobs? does any one dare to say anything political incorrect but truth? I see families and communities are broken, too many homeless and mental problem people, too many violent crimes in US, i would rather live in a genuine happy and safe place regardless what version of freedom or democracy.

Regarding electric scooters in the city, I asked a friend in the Shenzhen government why the government doesn't restrict them? Or strengthen management? He told me that the government mainly considers that scooters solve the employment of many people. For example, there are a total of 15 million food delivery riders who use this convenient and low-cost tools of transportation. And scooters are also the means of transportation for most low-income people. So after balancing, the government does not strictly manage them like Hong Kong. Because protecting people's employment is the government's top priority.

    A story about democracy:
A farmer asked his son before he died: "Pigs complain about poor feed, cows complain about heavy work, and chickens complain about dirty nests. What should you do?"
The son said: "Change to good feed, change ploughs, clean up chicken coop."
The farmer shook his head and said: “No, don't do anything. Let them vote one from the pigs, the cows or the chicken to take care of them, let them think they are in control.”

To help you tell who's police simply check their uniforms with usually both Chinese and English words of Police or SWAT, if without it they are private security guards hired by private companies office buildings or shopping malls. Moved to China six years ago from the UK. Originally thought I had made a mistake and would stick it out for a few years until my minimum tenure was up. Then I realised my god this place has far more freedom and a much higher quality than the UK. It is insanely safe. The other day I accidentally left my iPhone on the park bench because my kid needed to go to the toilet. I came back, he went back to play and I continued chatting with my friends until maybe 10 mins in I realised my phone as missing. Went back to the bench and it was still there. Also, people often say yes but you can't protest. Actually there are protests all the time. I work for a multinational and our clients often have an entire village rock up because one of our clients have withheld their funds for whatever reason. Also there is a 24/7 manned national hotline in Chinese and English, where you can file any complaint from a pothole to reporting corruption. Also contrary to popular belief people CAN vote for those who represent them locally and regionally. Sure you are not voting for a party or leader because the entire system is like a listed company, you have to earn your way up the ladder and demonstrate you have the right experience amd integrity - unlike the UK where it is about whether you have the right friends. Then the thing I often see in these comments is "well how about Tianenmen Square?". First off, no one talks about the fact that Japan denies the Nanjing massacre, has erased it from their history books and in some prefectures they even have cosplay days for Primary school kids to dress up in Imperial Japan military uniform. My friend back in the UK had police come to his door to issue a warning because he has a Palestine flag hung up... INSIDE his own living room! And lets not forget just before COVID, the Home Secretary in the UK sent over 20 officers to raid an ART GALLERY in London to seize an art installation because it was used during a legitimate climate protest.

The public transportation is also particularly good, especially their high speed rail network, it was so smooth, quiet, efficient, cheap, and fast, like I wish we had that in the US it’s so much better than flying or driving for like 500 mile distances, I honestly miss that so much. Lastly everything is just so incredibly cheap in China, it’s almost like 1 Chinese yuan has the same spending power as 1 USD in California, everything is just so cheap or the more honest truth is everything in California is just too expensive.

I can just agree with what that american was saying about China because I have been living in there for quite a long time and I am not influnced by what the western medias say about it.
Regarding democracy, chinese actually know it pretty well what it means unlike the negative propaganda of the west about this topic.
In fact, during the emperial dynasties, the ones who had the best scores at the national exam " the gaokao" had the possibility to ascend to power which was a very democratic way to select the right people to govern the country. About the one child policy, that applied only to certain provinces of the country. I met people that had 5 brothers or sisters.
That negative view of China is especially in the anglo saxon medias which gives a distorted idea of the reality in China.

A lot of people misunderstand the one-child policy. It’s not that having a second child was completely forbidden; rather, it was meant to encourage families to have fewer children due to limited resources. The idea was to focus on giving each child better opportunities and conditions instead of having many children without the means to support them properly.
I was born in the 1980s, during the strictest period of the policy. For my mother, it meant having fewer advantages compared to others in the same situation. The policy didn’t outright ban having a second child, but it did encourage a 10-year age gap between siblings so that parents could devote their full attention to each child.
It’s also important to note that the one-child policy was always intended to be temporary. Around a decade ago, the government shifted its focus, now encouraging families to have more children. Just like the one-child policy encouraged fewer children without banning them, the current approach encourages more children without forcing families to have them.

Same goes for "democracies", Nordic European countries make the best out of it, USA and the likes of countries likes of countries with dual party systems don't tend to focus on personal safety of it's citizens, Japan and Korea tend to do decent enough, Australia and Europe are not that bad as a whole either, but man is the US and Russia the perfect examples of how both systems are flawed, so having a bias towards one system or the other is not a good idea, ideally governments around the world learn from each others pros, and leave out the cons.

China can't build schools on the backs of horses and yaks. But China can build a building to protect Tibetan children from cold, hunger, marijuana and bullets. China not only exempted them from tuition fees and provided them with living allowances, but also prepared extra places for them and lowered their scores during the college entrance examination. Well, here's the question. Where is the school you built for the native Indians? You used a perfect infrastructure to build Indian schools on horseback or on the backs of cattle or on the scalps of Indians?

A Very important point on "Freedom" that ohhh so many fail to acknowledge.
Being free of WORRY about being shot, knifed, mugged, robbed, raped or violated in any other way as well. Do you feel safe about sending your children to school in China - in comparison to sending them to school in say Chicago ? Hint, females fear walking outside after dark in US Cities unless in large group - trained - embedded fear, but not so anywhere in China.
Those that freak out about CCTV etc, they often fail to recognize that the UK was the Most CCTV'd up until just a couple of years ago... and they are the only ones... (see middle east like Saudi). Lastly, those that CLUCK LOUDLY about it are worried that they will be caught doing illegal things and they want to continue their criminal "Special-Entitlement" asd they have been granted elsewhere (through systematic failure of acceptable social norms).

I just left LA after 3 years+ and am moving back to Asia. It's funny how true what Sean was saying about what you refer as 'freedom' and what your daily priorities are. Through my 3 years of living in LA, I realized I have never felt LESS free in my entire life, comparing to my life in Singapore, Japan and China. Everything in California seems to be designed so you spend money, and while private sectors are amazing (considering you have the money for it), public sector amenities barely exists--in comparison to the countries I've lived of course--and handling government-related paperwork is always such unnecessary hassle.
Some breakdown from 2024 : My landlord only accepts cheques (something I hadn't touched in almost 20 years outside of the US), and I lived in what was consider a very nice area in West LA. Dealing with Social Security required me to fax certain paperwork, similarly unheard of for decades. DMV appointment is a hit and miss, sometimes I still had to wait in line for over an hour. Banking is insane and I expected much better, the apps in the same bank's counterparts in Asia were much more user-friendly and automated (OK Japan is an exception here). Credit score is such a silly concept and don't even get me started on Taxes. No developed country should ever have tax filing system like in the US. I and my colleagues would talk, think and prepare for taxes for months in advance, especially if you don't fork out $300-400 for a tax filing service. In everywhere else I've lived in, tax filing is almost literally a click or two away, unless you have your own business. LA public transport is so laughable in comparison to other sprawling cities--buses and metro exists but they only cover major tourist areas. American insurance is a joke, the whole system is just ridiculous. Safety, which is uncompromisable for me and my family, is the kicker--granted it's more of American problem instead of USA--if you are used to life in other big cities outside of the US, you know what I'm saying, you never truly feel safe in the LA in comparison to those other cities.
Ultimately, the 'freedom' I expect from living in a big city in a developed country were unachievable in LA: general safety, accessibility, affordable travel, affordable entertainment and socializing, walkability, accessible and affordable education, health and insurance.
Of course, no place is perfect and there are many wonderful things about LA and California in general that I am thankful for, but ultimately it's not for me and it made me all the more grateful for how much Asia's society and city living has evolved rapidly over the past decades. Thanks Max and Sean for this video!

Well Shenzen looks cool indeed, but reality is that not all 1.5 billions chinese have a job and a sucessfull career like this man, most of them work very hard for a small salary. Also Shenzen is just a city in china, there's also many others small cities and village where conditions are not as good in Shenzen or major cities. Also in many european countries medical expenses are almost free or totally free like in France for every resident for exmaple, in china you have to pay or take an insurance but it also cost money so if you are too poor and cannot pay you can just die. In european countries tap water is drinkable so it's more convenient you don't have to buy bottles or boil water everytime. Also because of industries and lack of environment laws in asian big cities atmosphere is heavily polluted, it looks like a smog literraly, it's better for your health to stay in Europe where air is not as polluted as big asian cities.
Also payment system in China is very bad for tourism, totally incompatible with other payment system used in the rest of the world such as credit card, tourists will prefer to visit a country where they can just spent money without having to install an app and send money on it with high fees transactions for foreign card, why bother making things complicates when they can just choose any other country except china where they can pay by just using their credit card ? You can pay by cash but usually people won't have any money for change since everyone is using virtual payment, so if you don't have the exact amount you loose money everytime you pay by cash, not really a good idea right ?

Ive been all over China for the past 10 years and its crazy to see how fast they went from small towns to metropolis. I really like all-in-one super apps like Gaode and Alipay (which integrates with Touch 'n Go). However, I don't appreciate having to take a picture of my passport just to use their public Wi-Fi.
I love the public transport system (HRS, Bicycle, MRT, DiDi); everything is on time, clean and easily accessible. Better than SG if i might say. On the other hand, I'm not fond of the food here. It feels very homogeneous compared to Singapore and Malaysia, where I enjoy a diverse mix of cultural cuisines that have developed over generations.
I could go on and list many pros and cons as a traveller, expat whatever you like to call it. One thing is for sure, we have a way easy life there than ordinary locals thats for sure. There are problems and the government has a long way ahead. I have confidence China will always awe us in miracle ways

If you want to experience China more deeply, I strongly recommend that your travel plan must include: Xi'an, Beijing, Harbin, Shanghai, Chengdu or Chongqing. If you want to experience the ultimate beauty of China, you must go to Xinjiang, Kanas, where you will be intoxicated

@gelinrefira Yeah... the term "democracy" is frequently misused in Western propaganda, and the concept of voting, along with Western-style democracy, lacks a scientific foundation. China (along with Singapore) does not adopt this model because it is disadvantageous. In other words, Western-style democracy or democracy solely based on voting is the wrong model!

    • @gelinrefira
      @gelinrefira 18 днів тому

You can vote in Singapore and on some local level in China. I'm not saying voting does not work, I'm saying that the west pretends that democracy must come with their version of voting, parliamentary system which has been so corrupted and twisted and hijacked that their votes literally do not matter most of the time. They pretend that way so they can also keep pretending that any other system that do not follow their superficial application of voting and representation must therefore be terrible and evil. They set their own exams, took their own exams and grade their own exams and pass themselves with flying colors, while saying other countries with other systems are not qualified to even write their own exams. You see what I mean?

For example, there's the type of speech that you're restricted to at work as mentioned in the video, watching your language around family members, around kids, entertainment industry choosing what kind of things that are allowed to be shown to the masses, which has become much more politically correct over the last decade and so on.

Positions and honors in the school are voted on by the students, and in the smallest units of life, such as villages and urban communities, we vote. China is in fact meritocracy, with officials selected through examinations and meritocracy, a system that lies somewhere between democracy and meritocracy.
