Welcome to the official UA-cam channel of Joni Mitchell, whose songs “River,” “Both Sides Now," “California,” and albums ‘Clouds,’ ‘Ladies of the Canyon’ and ‘Blue’ compose only a fragment of a multi-disciplinary artistic output that has been embraced across generations, inspired multitudes of artists, and earned every conceivable accolade.
One of the world’s most remarkable and beloved artists, Mitchell has influenced musicians across a vast cross-section of genres with her ethereal songs that reflect social and environmental ideals. The prolific singer-songwriter-painter-poet has not only written and produced her music, but also designed most of her album covers and packaging. A journey into Joni Mitchell’s artistry is one of a highly original, harmonically innovative, and emotionally charged, familiar yet fresh adventure.
Joni Mitchell explains to Cameron Crowe in the Archives Vol. 3 liner notes: “[‘Like Veils Said Lorraine’] was a piece of dialogue that happened with the real-estate woman. I had almost found the land where I would build my little (stone-cabin) house. Lorraine was the real-estate woman who showed me properties. She had a Marlene Dietrich kind of look. She was a platinum blond and she was elegant. She had lived in China with her husband, so she was kind of worldly… and glamorous. It’s an account of our conversation. At some point, I switched to another realtor, and found the property where I would live. It was a piece of an old lumber-jack town. It wasn't on the market, but it called out to me. Houses are important to me, and I know how to pick them. I investigated it and I found out who owned it. I paid what she wanted, and she thought she took me. I thought I got a deal. (laughs) So we were both happy.”
Thanks for the morning tune w/ coffee Joni and Co.!
Really could I write here directly to Joni Mitchell?
Joni Mitchell благодарю за прекрасное исполнение.
❤
Amazing story. And song. Will be listening to this for a while
Joni Mitchell outtakes and demos are better than 99% of artists final albums. This is just another case in point
Too right! Looking forward to hearing what treasures are going to be uncovered
Yep. Her Sweet Bird demo is incredible.
I concur!!
I kind of wince a bit when I sit & wonder about just how much so many people would've loved listening to this beautiful tune over the years if it'd been released briefly after it was recorded... some 52 YEARS AGO!!
@@fallprecauxionsmusic Joni was barely appreciated in her time being so far ahead of the curve. We are still catching up. 50+ years later. Joni albums released now would be more appreciated in a slightly less sexist world.
Actually sounds very "For the Roses" era. Stunning.
It does. It has little elements of "Lesson In Survival" and that album's foray into a kind of classical music sound on her piano from "Judgment of the Moon and Stars".
So uplifting to hear for the first time a song from the incomparable, irreplaceable Joni. The sound of her voice is a portal through time to a world that we believed was more care free, loving, and hopeful.❤
❤❤
Soo grateful for this. For the roses is such an under appreciated album, and you can hear notes of it here, clearly had to be written around the same time.
It’s like finding an old love letter you never read, from a friend that you never thought you’d see again.
Beautifully said!
I love For the Roses too.
Absolutely agree. I love that album, and this song is gorgeous, haunting, and real in the same way as other tracks, like Lesson in Survival.
For the Roses is the gem of an album that no one ever mentions. Blue, Court & Spark and Hejira are the ones that are always mentioned, but For the Roses is right up there with those albums.
@@calebmurdock2028 Hundred-percent agreed, and can I add Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter to the unsung list?
Absolutely gorgeous song. Which is of course what you would expect from Joni. I hate to sound greedy but I hope there's more to come from this era. Or any era for that matter.
Me to❤
@anthonywhite, not greedy at all! I, too, wish for that, too. 1972 was the awakening of a new Era for me personally, and "For The Roses" accompanied me through it. A beautiful time and beautiful music from Joni. Exquisite!
“And miss all that beauty and the wisdom and the grace”. Thank you Joni for sharing this with us, I didn’t know what I was missing until I heard this…..beauty, wisdom and grace.
Oh this brings tears to my eyes ,the beauty that is Joni Mitchell that I have been lucky enough to have with me all of my married life since the late 60s.❤
Hey
I feel like I've found an antique ring with the most precious jewel that dazzles and shines!
New music from Joni, what a fabulous way to start my day!
Jgood sir
No modern composer has ever set conversations to music like you, Joni. So many revelations in those exchanges. ❤🙏🏼
@DrJohnBraddock17 No.
Brought to tears again with the beauty of this magical piece of music❤❤❤❤❤❤
Me, too... It is a gift from Heaven.
Lyrics:
‘It's veils you tear off, one by one,’ said Lorraine
‘No, it's walls we put up,’ said that tired voice again
The chisel gets blunt
And the sword gets profane
Nobody's blame
But you bind up the stone chips
In the gauze that you've slain.
You get so discouraged trying to cut through it all
More veils beyond veils
Always walls behind the walls
‘Get back in there!’ yells the golden glove
‘When you gonna trust me,’ slams the friend
‘Learn how to bend!’
‘Don't you worry now,’ soothes the sweet lover
With his medicine hands.
I don't want to grow narrow
and foolish in old age
And miss all that beauty
The wisdom and the grace
And you know you don't get that
From high finance or fame - if you get stuck in that frame
Or the paint that you can put
On your face and your name.
‘Life is like veils,’ said Lorraine
Written by Joni Mitchell
❤❤❤
Thank you! ❤
Joni is so cerebral in her writing ! She is a deep thinker! ❤
Thank you.
it’s “says the sweet lover” i think
Yet another example of Joni's uber-human talent. No artist has captured the essence of life in lyric and touched my soul like Joni. What a blessing.🙏🥰
Well put! I'm sure many others feel the same including me.
My partner is quiet I'll in the hospital at the moment...
This beautiful piece of music is just what i needed to help calm my mind.
Thanks joni.....
9/15/23: Best wishes to you and your partner who is ill.
I love you, Joni. x
I knew Joni had/has more! Great one too! "Like Veils Said Lorraine." 🏡
From the mind and voice of an angel No one touches my heart and soul more than Joni.
Thank you Joni, I live a better life because of your beautiful music.
So beautiful ❤ love you Joni ❤
As usual, there is brilliant intellectual and emotional exploration in this writing. "The lover with medicine hands." Even if it's a bit unfinished, what a gift! FTR is more of an artist's identity album to me. Exposing the relationship with her parents was key, and the reclusion required to create. Seeing the intimate photographs of the stone cabin this week on Instagram and this track is like Christmas in September! There's such authentic warmth in the vocals and playing. Seclusion on eighty acres on the Sunshine Coast will do this. I can't remember how we connected, but Wally Breeze and I would have coast-to-coast conversations lasting hours. He'd be so proud of what the website has become. "If" Joni can stoop to build again, with worn-out tools, and produce another album, wouldn't that be a miracle? LOVE TO YOU JONI!
Wow. Thanks again!!
What a treat to hear this incredibly beautiful song today. I've listened to it over and over again.❤
It’s like having her back when she was young. A miracle indeed. She is God’s music Angel. ❤❤❤
Gorgeous. Thank you for this preview of the treasures in the upcoming compilation.
Thanks Joni!
"Oh, I don't want to grow narrow and foolish in old age
And miss all that beauty, the wisdom and the grace" ❤❤❤❤ Thank you, Joni.
Just wow.
Beautiful song, beautiful voice, and simply a beautiful woman. We live you JM !
Beautiful ❤❤❤❤
@DrJohnBraddock17 nope girls from Spain are far more beautiful and exceptional!
Incredible. How could such deep stark beauty lie in a vault for decades.? Not since Bobbie Gentry's 2018 box set, The Girl From Chickasaw County: The Complete Capitol Masters, have I relished such hidden gems finally coming to life..
❤❤❤
Thank you, Joni for another precious gift. Its heart-warming to hear another song come out. You must have loads of stuff they didn't ever put on albums, as I am sure your brain never stopped (or stops) creating.
Hope it's All archived and available to hear ....
It just needs another 3 or 4 more verses! It's so hauntingly beautiful, I don't want it to end!
she's just fabulous - a thread that runs through my life with her watery songs and dreamy lyrics
Joni finds poetry and meaning in the most prosaic situations. Thanks for posting this gem, and for the back story on its creation. What a dream of a song.
Joni, this is a huge treat to your fans. Wonderful to hear your 70's voice again.. Love & appreciation!
Wow! Thanks again!
🎸🙋♀️Thank You!🎶
So beautiful! Like a gift from Heaven... Thank you, Joni! ❤❤❤
Just beautiful! So looking forward to the Archives 3!! ❤
Joni, your music from this era carried me. You spoke to me with your music and poetry what I held in my heart. I couldn't express any of it as beautifully as you did then and now, thank you.
Beautiful! Only Joni could do something like that.
This song is so beautiful. I just keep playing it.
Conversations frequently are the spark. Whatever our art, they can cascade in unexpected ways. Sometimes leading to greatness, and sometimes dissolving before we reach a conclusion. I think over the last 50 years or so, I've been able to harvest a great deal of wisdom, which Joni pointed me to; all from conversations that she magically turned into poetry.
Pure gold. "I will always love you..."
How do you create musical perfection? It’s very simple - you just sit Joni Mitchell down at a piano and magic happens. I’ve been listening to her for over 50 years and this song brought tears to my eyes because of its sheer artless beauty.
Thank you so m❤uch for this lovely song
Fabulous, Joni...
Now I know why someone said to Graham Nash “what’s it like living with Beethoven “ Wow this woman
Leonard cohen said that
Beautiful 😍
She is just SO brilliant…LOVE THIS.
Magnificent Genius Joni.
this is music,
This. This is freaking amazing. Let me pick myself up of the floor and track it a third and fourth time.
Gotta wonder what record producer thought this shouldn't see the light of day.
Joni produced her albums. These decisions were hers. I agree that it is a incredible song, but she obviously had her reasons for not recording it beyond the demo stage.
🌹🌹 Thanks so much for posting this.
greatest artist of all time.....end of story!
Gorgeous and Brilliant
The closest feelings and images for me! Thank you! I listen to the album "Both Sides Now" especially often in the evening.
I was touched by your fantastic beautiful song!!!
great songwriting!!! great work!!!
La querida y eterna Joni❤
Joni Mitchell is a wonder, isn’t she? My musical education is scanty, so I don’t know how else to say this, pardon please: it’s not that she’s inventing new notes, but she comes at them from such an original direction and sequence that they sound like they’re brand new, like the invention of a new color added to the spectrum. Yay!
Your the best Joni, there is no female vocalist that could match you
Thank you for being g a part of my life
As if a male could
..... said Lorraine... it's all I need.
wow!
beautiful

Stunning!
thank you 🥺
Sounds like a track that would be on 'For The Roses'
My favorite Album !!!
Joni has cool penmanship! The way she signs her name is very distinct !
I'm most excited for this particular Archive set because the run of albums between For The Roses and Hissing Of Summer Lawns is my absolute favourite era of Joni's career. And I'm incredulous that songs like "Like Veils Said Lorraine" were left on the cutting room floor (or whatever the musical analogy would be). I'm grateful that Joni is opening her archives to us while she is still alive. She is an artist par excellence. And a treasure to Canadians like me.
❤
So beautiful. I loved "For the Roses" when it came out. It sounds like it would have been on that album.
It's like the sister of Lesson In Survival and Let The Wind Carry Me had gone missing and has been finally found.
What a gem. And what a genius one must be for putting in such beautiful poetry a real estate conversation.
Sounds like an inversion of "The Last Time I Saw Richard", which I would guess as to why it wasn't released. What a wonderful song here regardless.
Wow. Too short, I want more!!!
She has a nice voice.
wow.. what a stunning short piece. From the For the Roses era, sounds like. @jonimitchell - Was it a consideration for the album? How amazing it'd be to hear a collection of "almosts!"
Wouldn't that be wonderful? Her "almost and not quites" would delight her fans so much.❤
without question,@@robinsanchi5490 💯

I can hear the influence of Laura Nyro on this song.

Wow
I’m glad she didn’t put this on the album but it is a brilliant track and I am glad she shared it.
Where can I order a copy of this wonderful album?
There is a link in the description. If you like this song and are not familiar with her magnificent "For The Roses," you will find it to be a revelation.
holy shit
👏🏆🙏😉😘😎
Why is this collection twice as expensive than the previous two?
Peace Love Cool RFS Israel *.
SIMPLY NO ONE LIKE HER...A REVEALING REVELATION A GODDESS TO ME FOR 60 YEARS
IRREPLACEABLE...... PRIVILEGED TO LIVE IN HER LIFETIME
The lady said in an interview in 2014 that she had very few rarities in the vaults. Looks like she kinda lied to the interviewer or was being very modest…
She actually doesn't. This is the only unused song from For The Roses to be included on Archives 3. For Blue, there were only two extras. She (unfortunately for us) really did not record that many additional songs.
@@murther4906 Yes but rarities also include demos
Or she didn't remember what she had recorded. Joel Bernstein would be the one to tell her, as he looked after her archive for many years. I'm sure he was involved in the process of selecting what is being presented.
Sigh....
❤
. I'm, a very old fan . it's been a long time . hard life (MULDEW) .
