Joni Mitchell released Blue, concluding her prolific four album run for Reprise Records with an album considered by many to be one of the greatest of all time. Its stirring, confessional songs have been celebrated by music lovers and critics alike for decades while inspiring a wide variety of artists as diverse as Prince and Taylor Swift. Even today, its stature as a masterpiece continues to grow. Just last year, the album was named #3 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”
To celebrate the album’s 50th anniversary, Rhino is releasing THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971), the next installment of the Joni Mitchell Archives series, featuring newly remastered versions of Blue (1971) and the three albums that came before it: Song To A Seagull (1968), Clouds (1969), and Ladies Of The Canyon (1970). In the case of Song To A Seagull, the original mix has been recently updated by Mitchell and mixer Matt Lee.
The cover art for THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971) features a previously unseen self-portrait Mitchell sketched during the time period. The collection also includes an essay by Grammy winning singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, another artist who’s been influenced greatly by Mitchell.

I’m a tough old guy. I’ve been in street fights and I’ve wrestled wild dogs. And I’ll tell you something. Joni Mitchell’s voice is so exquisite that it makes me cry.
wait i really want to hear about you wrestling wild dogs tho
I'd read the book that starts with this line
I believe you! 😆
Sounds like andropause
I've wrestled evil clowns standing on one foot.😂
This is the first song I remember hearing as a child. My mom and I sang it together in her car when it came out. I’m 57 now and my mom is gone. I’m right there with her whenever I hear it. Thank you
I lost my mom in Jan (2024). Today is Mothers Day. I am right there with you on your comment. I'm 55 years old
Me too
I Am 57 too...and lost my beautiful Mum 2 years ago next month.
I alwaYs thought lyrics where saying I never knew "love" rather than "life" at all.
All fits now...I knew love from the very beginning ❤ 🎉😊
You probably heard the Joan Collins version
Right there with you - lost my Mum 3 years ago only 61 and used to sing Joni with her growing up. Breaks my heart to listen to it but also brings her closer to me ❤
My boyfriend and I both cried listening to Joni perform this song at the 2024 Grammys!!! She is an iconic humble legend… and she outclassed everyone on stage tonight ! Proof that words are by far more powerful than all the showy bells and whistles ! Thank you for modeling what’s possible ! ❤
Best part of the Grammys program
Best part. 😢
❤ She's a golden gift 🎁
It was absolutely amazing. Most moving performance I've heard in a long, long time.
Why do ppl feel the need to put others down to make a point … this is the state of the world today … Joni is one of a kind she’s an icon …
Younger Joni singing this vs older Joni. The younger sang it optimistically, and this Joni sings from experience. Poignant melancholy. Sublime.
This song puts my mother rite beside me. She passed 25 yrs ago, way too young.
So glad you still think of her in such a special way!!
Beautiful voice with powerful words. I heard this song when I first came to America 57 years ago.. Still I relish at the age of 80..
Thousands of comments. Thousands and thousands thumbs up, not one thumbs down. You're heaven sent Joni.
Not one to cry over music, but this song is the exception. It's a timeless song that only continues to hit home harder and harder as we grow older.
I couldn't agree more. listening to this right now, in tears....
I am one of those instead who cry over music and over good things in general, so you can imagine my state right now as I write :)
If this brings you to tears, be sure to check out Joni’s performance with Belinda Carlisle to see it from the other end of her life. It takes it full circle.
❤
@@moonlitme ❤
This is a Beautiful, Timeless, Universal song. ❤
There's a good reason why the artists of her era admired her so much.
She was very young when she wrote this beautiful work of art, she knew more about life at that age than most will ever figure out.
I learned this song in third grade music class in 1968. Still as powerful as ever at last night's Grammys
Joni, Listening to you last night brought tears to my eyes. I just turned 60 and I realized on a deeper level what makes a great song: its relatable message and changing understandings. I also came up with a great project for my Philosophy class for in Bolivia. Now they will know you. I love you. You are a national treasure.
Hear you from Australia .
The most amazing performance tonight! A break out in tears …. wonderful memory…. Sadness and Joy….. and living every minute. Thank you for your Grace… and for gracing our lives ❤
She is still so special after all these years, and that song is a masterpiece.
The graviteasing monument of imagine word ... live love like life ... waters world warmth woman wine ... suckle rush sooth salve sit-u-sigh ... thankyou prince & JONI MITCHELL
Something's lost and something's gained in living every day.
Those words have sustained me through many painful times. Love you Joni 💖.
Brought tears Joni for your 2024 Grammy
Me too😢
I cried the whole time she sang tonight..Magnificent.
Seeing the older celebs in tears , Beyoncé , Meryl Streep …. They were feeling it deeply
@@MMacAttackcalling Beyoncé an “older” celebrity is wild 😭
Her music don't come from her brain, its come from her heart and soul. And she has a beautiful soul ❤.
Joni Mitchell just kills me, Such beauty in every word, Every chord, Every story.
I love this song. It encapsulates everything that most of us feel, especially during these difficult and confusing times. The only thing I know about life is I don’t want to hurt others for any reason. I don’t want to add pain to someone’s life, especially since we never know what someone is really going through inside.
Beautiful performance on the Grammys tonight! 🥰
私は日本人 当時13歳 疲れきった誇り高いアメリカの人々の心にこの曲は優しく入り込み幾度の涙💧を誘った事でしょう😢どんなに声高な反戦歌より厳しく強いメッセージです❤
Just a voice, a guitar, and words. But have you ever been more fascinated and blown away?
Simplicity is absolute beauty. With this version, we can absolutely feel the sincerity, irony, poignancy and nature of what life is.
Thank you for this - nostalgia brings it back to me - being 90 years old hasn't changed it...
Rick Beato brought me here. He just uploaded his video about her an hour ago. I've been a long-time fan of Joni since my parents took me to see the original theatrical release of The Last Waltz documentary. I was 10-years old at the time.
Amazing performance tonight at the Grammys. So moving. Had everyone in tears.
She still sounds amazing. Love this song forever. Joni you made me cry during the Grammys. Thank you❤.
Beautiful performance on the Grammy tonight 👏🏾. Thanks Joni ❤️ 😊 🙏🏾
Stunning song. Joni is a true legend. One of the purist forces of singer songwriting in this last 6 decades. She was performing about the same year I was born in 1971. Her music reflects a much simpler time, where everything seemed possible. When I listen to it, I may as well be stepping into a time machine. Thanks for the time machine Joni.
To write something so insightful about life at such a young age is so very rare. Her poignant reflections of looking back and contrasting the same things in our lives from when we are young compared to when we are older is true lyrical genius.
And to see her perform it on the Grammys last night was a lesson in deeply felt lyrics and supremely gifted artistry. She HELD the audience spellbound. ❤
I used to read /sing her book (of the same name) to my now 28 yo daughter. That Grammy performance really took us both back. Still crying!
Even after listening for decades, her songs are still fresh and vibrant and relevant. She's my musical touchstone that everything out there is compared against, and she always brings me an indescribable level of inner comfort and centeredness. I am so grateful to have had her as a musical presence through my teens to my senior years. How great is that.
❤ и я так же чувствую,! как вы пишете прекрасно об этом дорогом сердцу шедевре)
This song is amazing, ageless, love it, exactly how I feel it's all a mystery now, I know less the older I get❤ love this joni
Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez had the most beautiful in-tuned voices ever, no matter how simple the harmony, they would turn all songs in a delight to the ears.
I'd add Karen Carpenter.
And they both could eat corn through a picket fence
So many people say life is meaningless, but there are clouds, rain, and gentle breezes that come off the gulf, and sometimes love finds you...
Decades later and it still makes me cry
In her youth her voice was so beautiful and I will always love Joni ❤ I want to learn this song and play it on my guitar and pretend I’m Joni Mitchell for a few minutes.
Love you Joni Mitchell, this song you sung at the Grammys tonight brought back memories of everything we all been thru
She's a goddess. I've been a Joni fan my whole life.
Same
I agree loved her beautiful voice and song lyrics since I first heard her so much meaning
same here
Same here. My all time favorite artist in everything she does, and my God, she's done a lot against a lotta' headwinds.
I love the meaning of this song. Makes me cry. Great Grammy performance.
What a piece of music every time I listen to this is awesome
If I had to choose one song to listen to for the rest of my life. It would be this one. This song inspired me to try writing my own poems. So grateful to you Joni. You have given us a song we could grow old with
Unquestionably one the top 5 songs ever written in all history. I've been in love with Joni since I was 18 (now 70) so I am biased. It is my #1.
One of THE greatest songs of the 20th century.
There r not words 2 describe how great this woman is I'm 63 yrs old seen hundreds of concerts never saw Joni don't think I will at her age and her health Joni thanks 4 living I love u forever
Most fearless poet of our time. Love you Joni! I know you will stay with us right till the end.
"Prisoner of white lines on the free way"❤
You know the season.
Listening to Joni Mitchell perform this song at the Grammys last night was awesome! Couldnt have picked a more perfect song. Definitely brought back alot of memories.
Hi from 🇹🇷
The film named "Life as a house" brought me here. This song played there. Ironically, it felt so depressing and peaceful at the same time. I couldn't wait to finish the movie so I stopped right there and started looking for the name of the song. I really loved it. I learned that we are the same age as the song, what a sweet coincidence👩❤️👩
Joni and Jackson, Americas best poets!
You nailed it tonight, beautiful on the Grammys... you have made my 🌎 a better place with your magical ✨️ talent ✌️&❤
Joni, I am 72 now, but listening to this i am brought to when I saw you and talked to you in Cohasett, ma. You were so beautiful, and so genuine....Part of me loved you, and still does. Take good care....love, fergie
Sensationally covered by the lovely and talented Jackie Evancho in tribute to Joni in her new single. ua-cam.com/video/mW4grXeHsWk/v-deo.html
First time hearing about her, but loved the song on the Grammy Awards 2/4/24
Make sure to listen to her voice on the original!
A song of ageless wisdom. Its hard sometimes to believe Joni Mitchell was so young when she wrote it.😊❤
When I was young so was this song. I will be 60 this year. This version fits my life now. Life is so beautiful.
I will also be 60 this year. Life is certainly beautiful.
The song was written in 66 and finally recorded in 68. Lovingly covered by Jackie Evancho in tribute to Joni, in her new single. ua-cam.com/video/mW4grXeHsWk/v-deo.html
Joni Mitchell is music royalty. This one right here is a classic.
Sometimes we need to cry and let go of any feelings making it so, this song does that for me, I thank you Joni, with all my heart
We witness the awakening, & the sleep, the morning, to darkness of the deep and light of days throughout the weeks...to feel these colours that we seek, we sing to speak. Your music brings these magical vistas to gently weep then to smile in me...❤
Beautiful timeless song. Beautiful voice.
Looking forward to these remastered albums, as well as more from the archives in the future. Joni is one of the greatest musical artists of our lifetime, and I'm glad that she's bringing out these updated releases while she is still with us. Thank you, Joni.
A consummate artist who deals in the sublime...still have ALL her vinyl albums.
Joni, you are an artist, a poet a thinker and a dreamer.
Love this song so much. No matter how long years had passed. It’s still reflecting the feeling of my mind.
written by my wife - best song ever written and sung by Joni - amazing always loved Joni - her guitarist also gifted and in the groove
Love, love, love. On my list for top five most beautifully written songs of all time... words and music. Thank God for Joni.
I first got to know this song when I was only 19 with the movie love actually. I knew of Joni, but wasn't as familiar with her catalogue. That famous scene in the movie made me a dedicated fan. Let me tell you that I literally woke up my husband from sitting on the edge of the bed sobbing, enraptured by this performance and seeing Brandi Carlisle play with her idol. It was truly a beautiful moment
Lovely track, so emotional, let's dedicate it to those who might become your supporters from now on and .. wishing everybody turn back singing on streets turning back to life again, we are lucky survivors and we need to build up a better humankind together, good old songs might help a lot
Sensationally covered by Jackie Evancho in tribute to Joni in her new single. ua-cam.com/video/mW4grXeHsWk/v-deo.html
Though our numbers are shrinking,Joni keep giving the kids what peace is about. It's been a long journey, but the young can still learn gentleness
He "all grown up" redo on Both Sides Now is my favorite. The maturity in voice is a warm heavy blanket of life.
Simply the best! I love you Joni ❤
Delicate and ethereal and completely soulful...from a time of poetic beauty and brilliant phrasing. I ❤ u Joni
Just may be the best, the greatest song ever, sung with such devotion.
Truly a beautiful song ❤
Best & most meaningful lyrics ever written (tied with “pave paradise & put up a parking lot”). Genius insight❣️❣️❣️
This is the most beautiful song I've ever heard my entire life. Poetic lyrics and melody, it's a masterpiece ❤️
Still here in 2024
I’ve looked at life from both sides now..
Genius.. How grateful I am for Joni..
Beautiful voice, beautiful lyrics, beautiful human...
Your music bought me so much joy in my life, thank you.
I only really discovered Joni's music in earnest around the time her Hits/Misses compilation came out in the mid 1990s. I had heard a few songs on the oldies radio like Big Yellow Taxi and Help Me as a teenager in the 1990s. But nothing prepared me for the absolute sheer mastery of her craft. She is, frankly, in a league all of her own. And the world is a much better place with Joni and her music in it.
Beautiful song ever❤
Joni, thank you so much for this song. It's honesty, humility and wisdom takes my breath away. And, you were so young when you wrote it. Stunning! It serves as a message of hope for so many of us. Who ever said a painful life can't be a beautiful life? Life's illusions... damn straight.
Know this song well but never hit me like it did last night. Just fantastic.
First heard at 17, even more true at 67.
You taught me hpw to sing Joni Mitchell, I learned this song as a little girl and still sing it decades after. Thank you from my heart.
Sensationally covered by Jackie Evancho in tribute to Joni in her new single. ua-cam.com/video/mW4grXeHsWk/v-deo.html
Beautiful insightful artist. Joni writes like the all round artist she is.
Ending scene of ' after Life'. Brought about tears.
🌹🦋 peaceful song.
The wonderfulness and comfort of the youth are irreplaceable , and universal
I love everythings in this song. Every version.
Rare these days to get a singer songwriter with a skilled voice AND something moving and nuanced to sing with it👏 😭
The song is clearly about growing up and losing one's innocence in a cynical world. No truer words were ever spoken.
Lovingly covered by Jackie Evancho in tribute to Joni, in her new single. ua-cam.com/video/mW4grXeHsWk/v-deo.html
After All these years, still ~ Sooooooooo indescribably BEAUTIFUL 💜

A master class in songwriting remastered - today is a good day ❤️
This is the version that i love. I love listening the song again and again. Surely, i would play this song in my old age.
Sensationally covered by Jackie Evancho in tribute to Joni in her new single as well. ua-cam.com/video/mW4grXeHsWk/v-deo.html
Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I ve Looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and they snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show
And you leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions that I recall
I really don't know love
Really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say, "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way
Oh, but now old friends they're acting strange
And they shake their heads and they tell me that I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
It's life's illusions that I recall
I really don't know life
I really don't know life at all
Thank You so much !
Pure poetry! And only 24 years old when she wrote this! Wow!
Thanks for these lyrics!
I just turned 62 . I am a male.. I think. I awoke to this song feeling a little bit fragile... I think I'll kick back and listen to a bit of Joni .
As soon as I heard her voice I began to tremble , itchy nose, right into full
blown sobs. It was like something very femaleic came over me. Joni has that effect on people. She's so full of love ❤️ . And the visuals that she gives me are so mystifying and free.
For the stone old age minds out there. This is a wake up call..We really know nothing.Nothing much.Nothing at all!.You will recall! I really really love and care for this song!Thank you Joni
