Joni will go down in music history as one of our greatest singer songwriters. Her clear voice, brilliant lyrics and use of unusual tuning and melodies make for some stunning music. This song is heartrending.
I have found the interesting thing for me is seeing a young person like yourself being exposed to certain music for the first time. Joni's album Blue is considered one of the three or four greatest albums ever recorded in this era of awakening of Western culture. It can be forty years later that I hear songs from Ms Mitchell and I still will feel the tears come down my face from her astonishing beautiful music and her voice like no other. I am 76 now, owned record stores in the 60's, 70's and 80's and have been listening to contemporary music of my lifetime for all my life and now, that someone is steered to these treasures for your first listen and see you astonished at the music and voice of this great artist, it still thrills me that there are new people to discover these treasures and it will too affect you in the same way. That is why these videos of people searching for musical treasures are so meaningful.
A special pleasure of mine is hunting through UA-cam looking for people hearing Joni Mitchell for the first time. Their reactions are always the same - surprise and delight. I think the line 'but be prepared to bleed' was more metaphorical than physical.
Joni has worn many hats during her 6+ decades as a singer/songwriter. She started as a folk artist in the 1960's but during the 70's and on into the 80's she branched out into pop music and even jazz. This album Blue was voted as the "third greatest album of all time" by Rolling Stone magazine in 2020 and the countless number of female artists that were influenced by Joni's music is staggering, you can see her influence even in today's artists. That was a lovely reaction Sarah, cheers from Ontario, Canada!
The album that is what this song came from is titled "Blue" and is considered the 4th greatest album ever recorded. Joni wrote and recorded Blue and a lot more albums too. We all are privileged to be able to listen to her beautiful music and voice.
The song was written by Joni for her lover and fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen. Try the song she wrote to her previous lover Graham Nash called The River. Sublime
Joni is unique. In her intimate lyrics, her wonderful voice, and her musicality. She influenced me a lot in my younger years and still enchants me in my 70s. No singer in my life came closer to my heart!
Phenomenal song and reaction. Watching you smile with delight at each new verse and each musical variation she introduced was most enjoyable. Joni was playing a mountain dulcimer accompanied by James Taylor on acoustic guitar.
Thank you God for letting me grow up in the 60s and having joni Mitchell to listen to all my life. I get it. I will always have her as my inspirational soul
Joni is one of the greatest music enigmas of the 20th and 21sr centuries. And she is the most untouchable lyricist I have ever encounteted. HOW??? to weave such subtle stories, conversations, complex stanzas, emotional highs and lows together in a way that feels spontaneous, pure and musical?she s the ONLY artist that has achieved this, and she achueved it before she reached 20...
SO JON'IS PLAYING A ( DULCIMER ) SARAH, SOUNDS LIKE A MANDOLIN OR EVEN AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR 😊SHE DID A (70) BBC CONCERT SHOW, SHE WAS JUST 27, IT'S ABOUT 40 MINS. AND SHE PLAYS HER PIANO, GUITAR, DULCIMER, OVERRRR 52 YEARS AGO NOW, CRAZY! 😊 AND SHE'LL BE ( 80 ) IN NOV, GOD BLESSSS HER SOUL!
I’m crying watching you hear this …this song moved me years ago! You amaze me…. In my 50 some odd years, I’ve not seen someone like you xx You make my heart smile xx
Joni Mitchell is one of those artists that come along rarely, bringing beauty to our lives. This song is like the song of an angel. Thanks for your heartfelt reaction, Sarah!
It is well known that Joni was the greatest song writer and performer of her age, the greatest age for rock music. Joni wrote such beautiful songs that they still stand up in the world of music as unique, and unlike anyone else's work. Her voice, her images, her virtuosity on guitar and piano made her special. I have listened to this Blue album for decades now and it never gets old. It was rated the 4th greatest album ever recorded in the music industry. Sample more when you can.
When this "Blue" album was released, it was a revelation. As usual, you really got the meaning of the song, and weren't only swept up by the musical beauty of it. You mentioned feeling like you were inside the song, that it felt like it was all around you. The stereo mix of the song has this incredible;e surround stereo placement bouncing left and right which really facilitates that sensation. The entire album is an incredibly wonderful complete listen-through.
1 in a million voice, also a fantastic musician and songwriter! sometimes talent is gathered into 1 place at one time. thanks for sharing this. big love to all people :)
Yes, the woman really did know him - she was his mother ("she had a mouth like yours"). This song was written to/for Leonard Cohen, with whom Joni was having a fling at that time. Thank you, Sarah, for this song. More Joni Mitchell, please. 💙 💙 💙
Joni Mitchell is a great Canadian-American singer songwriter. She covers a lot of genres of music including folk, pop, rock, classical & jazz. She has had so many hits especially in the 60's-80's such as "Chelsea Morning", "Help Me", "Big Yellow Taxi", "The Circle Game", "Both Sides Now", "Woodstock", "Raised On Robbery", "Free Man In Paris" etc.
Good morning 😎 Great reaction ! Love Joni Mitchell ♥ Have you done - Big Yellow Taxi? - She was in Hawaii looking out her window and wrote this. Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone They paved paradise, put up a parking lot
So great to see you enjoying my favourite Joni song from my favourite Joni Album. I can sing along (in my head) with every tune, word perfect. It must be 50 + years since I first fell in love with this album. Blue is my number 1 album of all time. I love the vinyl version best because the inside cover has all the lyrics. Sheer Poetry.
A delightful reaction! :D I appreciate your listening to the "whole package".. lyrics, music, vocal delivery. :D Interestingly, I'd just finished watching footage of Joni singing this song in concert (June 10 2023 performance), more than 50 years after she recorded the album/song reviewed here. (Her vocal range is much lower now, but she still imparts it with a wonderful vocal delivery and heartfelt emotion.)
LOVE THE REACTIONS WHENEVER I SEE SOMEONE PUT ON JONI FOR THE 1ST TIME, IT'S PRETTY AMUSING! 😊SO IF YOU WANT MORE HITS SARAH : BOTH SIDES NOW, HELP ME, FREE MAN IN PARIS 😊WELL THERE'S 3 GREAT ONES BABY, SHE HAS SO MANY, ENJOY SARAH!
I don't know who she is, but she evokes the '70s sensibility I'm glad you're a lot brighter than before I miss seeing you react to Forestella's song~~^^
I would encourage Joni fans to check out a full album tribute by Jackie Evancho. 10 different cuts interpreted as only Jackie can. Pure and beautiful. The album is called Carousel Of Time, and includes this song, A Case Of You, as well as other favorites such as Blue, Circle Game, Both Sides Now, and my favorite River. Every single one is beautiful!
She is Canadian ( Leonard Cohen was a Canadian ) "I met a woman who had a face like yours"---his Canadian mother, who told Joni, this is one difficult man to deal with. Get it!
You start jiving and bouncing like this is an UP dance tune, but very soon you hear she is serious, very serious...she is singing the Canadian National Anthem a bit in there...up here trilling. She is playing the dulcimer- James Taylor is behind her playing chords and the occasional run on his guitar.. but what words, what singing, and what an incredible metaphor....In My Blood like Holy Wine.... I could drink a case of you and Still be On my feet....

Yes........Joni was like a spirit from another planet. Many of her songs are emotionally overwhelming and her lyrics amazingly poinent.
Great reaction. So articulate, so gracious. Thank you.
Was??? She is still alive...
As a Canadian I have much love for Joni, the members of the band (4 sadly gone) and Neil Young, they will always be a part of me.

O, Canada. :)
Probably the most important female singer/songwriter of her generation.
Joni’s songs are beautiful and pure. This is an album that I can listen to forever. Outstanding song writer and performer.

Joni has a deep, deep catalog of brilliant music. She is unique!
Joni is unique. In her intimate lyrics, her wonderful voice, and her musicality. She influenced me a lot in my younger years and still enchants me in my 70s. No singer in my life came closer to my heart!
I agree with every word!
Only two songs that bring a tear to my eye every time I hear them. "Over The Rainbow" by Eva Cassidy, and "Case Of You" by Joni Mitchell
This is from her album "blue". Every song is beautiful and insightful and perfectly made. You should check out the rest of the album.
Phenomenal song and reaction. Watching you smile with delight at each new verse and each musical variation she introduced was most enjoyable.
Joni was playing a mountain dulcimer accompanied by James Taylor on acoustic guitar.
The woman who she met with a mouth like his, who knew his devils and his deeds was the man's mother. The song is said to about musician Leonard Cohen.
Did not know that, but how appropriate.
Love is touching souls. Surely you've touched mine, cause part of you pours out of me in these lines from time to time.
Oh, yes! The whole Blue album is superb.
Seriously, get a bottle of wine and play this entire album front to back. It's honestly amazing.
@@colleenmahony8803
Front to back, this album IS the bottle of wine.
Poetry in the breath of life, and the angel sings for eternity in our hearts... What a blessing!
Because of Joni Mitchell, I started playing the dulcimer as a teenager! BTW that's James Taylor on acoustic guitar.
Thank you God for letting me grow up in the 60s and having joni Mitchell to listen to all my life. I get it. I will always have her as my inspirational soul

James Wolpert's cover of the song on The Voice was phenomenal and absolutely did it justice.

Joni was one of a kind for sure. She was the real deal. Wonderful Sarah. 😊
Discovered this song through the movie Practical Magic. Always accompanies me on long drive trips since then 😊
Very heartfelt comments. Insightful. Thanks for sharing. There were two poets that the 60s produced. Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.

This was me 45 years ago!
The woman with a mouth like his could be his Mother.
He has a mouth like his mother or perhaps his sister she means
She’s a Canadian.
This song is about her relationship with Leonard Cohen and the woman with lips like yours is his mother.
The woman is his mother
You should listen to some Allen Stone. He is the White Stevie Wonder.
