Can we all admit that we just experienced something mysterious and beautiful? How is it that so many (myself included) were in tears in the first few notes?. What magic is this? The timbre of her voice reached deep and opened our hearts...young, old, male, female...that is some amazing power!
Well said...
Me too sobbing from the start…..I guess Joni Mitchell knows/remembers what she once felt when writing this most important song…..it moves everybody
Exactly! I didn't expect it but I spontaneously teared up too.

I was thinking the same thing! This version is beautiful! Hauntingly beautiful!
Totally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A 23 year old wrote a song for her 78 year old self to sing.
Still poetic
12/30/22 @ 10:30 AM:
I first experienced this song as a young boy in the sixties. The first version was sung by a youthful Judy Collins. I had yet to hear the songwriter’s version.
Having heard the story behind the lyrics from Joni at a concert at a concert in the early seventies, added many layers with more than a little gravitas and emotion. I’m a nutshell, Joni Mitchell is a treasure!
Life, lived. Every day. Aroha. Love from New Zealand.
She may be 78 years old but she did a beautiful job. I don’t care what anybody says she still knows how to sing
❤
Grammy's brought me here and I am crying. This version really hits different. Beautiful rendition and voice despite her age. God bless you, Joni Mitchell!
Me too. I was looking for that specific performance last night. I only recorded a few seconds of it.
I'm a sobbing mess as well.
Same here.
Grammys bought me here too. OMG I'm crying😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Me too. She really is incredible.
A Joni Mitchell performance for the ages. The unsung hero her is the piano player.
Her voice has changed immensely through the years, but it’s aged like a fine wine, with grace and dignity. She just rocks.❤️
Omg! I just said this out loud just before I read your comment!
She reminds me a bit of Nina Simone now, her voice has a similar tone. Another great female artist.
We all gonna get older if we lucky Praise God for Joni's dignity. Honored Sister

My wife died on the 14th the day before our 52 wedding anniversary after a battle with cancer. We both loved Joni Mitchell, her music was the sound track to our first years of married life. I mourn my wife but this has taken me back to those first days when all that mattered was loving each other and dreaming of the future. Joni, thank you for bringing back those memories.
I am sorry for your loss.
I’m just some rando out in the world whom you don’t know, but I send you my condolences
What a beautiful memory you will have forever. Thanks for sharing it with us. May you stay strong and find peace in the love you shared with your wife. My condolences for your loss. 🙏✌️❤️

♥️ beautiful memories. Take care and hold them tight. 🌸
This is one of the most beautiful moments I've ever seen in the whole UA-cam. So deep and emotional. Thanks Lord, we have Joni!
Beautifully said and I agree with you so much.
I concur - music heaven
She wrote this great song in 1967 when she was 24, and today she is 80. Wow!🌻
Possibly earlier coz it was in a live album from 1966! Profound at such a young age. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Both_Sides,_Now
She was 21 years old. Amazing!
She must have been the oldest 21 years old at the time
I was 7 years then and remember it well!
@@twraia it was normal for artists to be 16 17 18 and doing things that youngsters nowadays are too dumbed down to comprehend
There is a poignancy in this song that was not there in Joni's younger years. She sings it as if she is speaking to a grandchild about a life long lived and passing on all of the misconceptions about life that she had in her younger years. A timeless song by a timeless singer. Love you Joni Mitchell!
Wow, that just hit me hard. you've an insight there.
You are grand! Put beautifully!
This! Thank you! It is a wiser, older version of the original, I love how she is still able to match her voice to the song. Talented singing is not all about hitting certain notes, but storytelling, and she does.
what a beautiful interpretation and image, I don't think I'll hear this song the same way again because of you. thank you.
@@tarahobson1525 k
I honestly love this version of the song…an older woman looking back over her life….beautiful
Absolutely. It's the best version of the song ever. It was never one of my favourites before, but this beautiful performance has given it new meaning.
Just listened to it without watching and it sounded even better- all the stage distractions were gone so all that was left was music- she’s got a great lineup of musicians who sing - or can sing- her parts- if she misses a line- but hearing it without video brought her own Smokey voice higher- all Brandi did was sing first few words to a complicated lyric and if she all she sometimes needed to get going-
She never gave uo
@@kujiholoki5744 I totally agree - this is the best and most important version of Both Sides Now -- and I never liked it either, especially when Judy Collins sang it -- no offense to Judy, but just saying....no one sings a song like the person who wrote it. And she knocks it out of the park without even standing up. Gosh it was great to see her perform again.. I cried all the way through it. Thanks!
Joni wrote this song after she gave up her daughter for adoption
@@user-yg8oq8xe3y No, completely wrong. She wrote the song while on flight during a reading of a novel in which the main protagonist himself was on a flight looking down at some clouds. She too saw the same thing and was inspired to write the song, there and then. Please don't emphasis events in her life that have nothing to do with influencing the subject of the song, however much you will like them to Karen.
If that song didn't move you to tears, you're not human...."at all". What a performance, what a living legend! 😊
It is not her song, judt collins sang it first. She copied her.
Nope, it was written by Joni. Judy Collins does a great cover (which was much better known) but Joni's versions are transcendant..
I could care less who wrote it. The woman who sang this version is my hero and a legend in her time. She's in her golden years now let's enjoy it with her.
Please tell me that I am not the only person in the world that has to watch this video a few times a day? Just an absolutely amazing performance. Thank you Brandi for helping Joni to continue to share her amazing gifts with the world !
You're not alone. I watch it and cry every single time I watch it. Amazingly emotional performance.
Also i, and tears in my eyes and soul.
I watch it several times a day too mate🎉🎉🎉There are no words to explain this experience 🎉🎉
I watched this countless times in the past week....
Its love, simple.
A beautiful song when it was written by Mitchell when she was 23 years old, becomes a poignant reminder of life lived when sung by Joni at age 78. A song whose beauty waited for 55 years before it blossomed into the memoir of a lifetime. Thank you Joni, for what you have given to the world.
THAT was so beautifully said and how true!
OMG, that’s exactly how I feel seeing this! It really got to me. 🥰
Thanks for saying/ typing what I can’t / am too emotional/ sobbing to say…

I can’t get through this without crying. I’m 52 and grew up hearing this song, and also being a Canadian it makes me so proud. It will be a sad day in music when this icon has passed. We have to appreciate her while she’s still here ❤
Definately 1 of the top 5 female song-smiths ever. Possibly top 3, or maybe even number 1. It gives me a lump in my throat to think we are loosing the architects of the golden years of music more frequently now. At the same time im glad at how spoilt our generations have been as far as this fine culture goes.
I cried through the whole thing.
Joni laughing at the end is priceless. She's unique. As Brandi said "we should all rejoice in the fact that , from all the times we could have lived through, we lived in the time of Joni Mitchell "
She was enjoying all the love, which was great to see!
@@acousticshadow4032 yes, such goodness to enjoy!

So true! I feel blessed we still can see and listen to her. Brought me some good tears of joy and gratitude. And love. We love you Joni.

To everyone saying that she’s lost it, she shouldn’t be there: how much guts does it take for a 79-year-old Joni Mitchell to get up on stage, knowing that she’ll be compared to her 25-year-old self? That’s what performing is about: showing up and making it work with everything you’ve got.
Who cares if her voice isn’t perfect? Her heart is.
Even without considering what she went through, she is great . Having her back on stage is one of the most beautiful pages of Rock music.
You’re so right!!!!!
We love her ..those damn clouds in life...
It’s her song, her story … it will always be perfect however she sings it. I am so happy to have heard this.
Everything about that was perfect I haven't felt a song touch me like this since I was a teenager now I'm 72

I'm astounded by the superb quality of her voice and her flawless phrasing.
Great points, it's amazing how phrasing can add so much more emotion to a song. Joni you are a true treasure.
She has always been a superb phrasemaster
Me too just the best phrasing music has helped her get well

It was at this festival in 1966 that Judy Collins introduced Joni Mitchell to her audience. Collins was the first to cover and record Both Sides Now and made Mitchell's song a huge hit. To me, what makes this song and Mitchell so iconic was that she had as a 23 year old the ability to write with such profound insight what for most us is only gained over many years and realized by 79 year olds, like her .... now. I first heard her sing it as a 25 year old. I marveled at its insights then and as a 79 year oldster in a few weeks ... still.
I learnt this song when I was about 20, thanks to Dianne Reeves cover. Now 30 years later, I finally understand a bit of what it means. We will always marvel. :)
Your post made the amazing story even more
amazing, John - thank you.

She sounds almost like Nina Simone at times
Chills. A lifetime later it has travelled well. Deeper, richer ... for some, truer. Thanks Joni Mitchell. Bravo. 👏
So amazing...at about 3:49 you can hear Brandi Carllile whisper "tears and fears" to Joni, who had clearly lost her place in the song. And then Brandi steps in and brings it back around on track, so that Joni can finish out the song so stunningly. Planned or just magical musicians supporting Joni, it matters not. It is an exceptional, beautiful moment in the entire beautiful moment of this recording! Props! Stunning!

The arrangement on this performance so much better than the Grammy's.
She was flat on the grammy's could have been the acoustic or the place she was singing -- hard to hear yourself.
It's always been a great song but it was as if it was meant to be sung on this day in this place. As if as a young woman she wrote this song for her older self to sing. Amazing, and her joyful laughter at the end was precious.
Oh, yes...I felt the same way.

Just as it should be. Human. I don't have any use for all these younger acts and their perfectly choreographed routines and voice correcting software and outright lip synching. This is where you find beauty.
In her Autumn years, she took a perfect song she made iconic and transformed it into something absolutely magical. Only Joni Mitchell could pull that off! A beautiful moment in music history, captured for all time on UA-cam.

I appreciate older performers who are still singing in their 80s-- they have a gravitas as well as a presence that younger folks don't have/haven't earned yet... and they connect us with the past in an important way, harkening back to some of our most poignant memories-- like a postcard from the past in our present moment.
Simply transcendental. Brandi Carlile's gentle supportive presence facilitates Joni's delivery. There's a few moments where Brandi prompts Joni delivery as she intuitively senses she may struggle recalling the next words but this is done so sensitively most of the audience wouldn't notice - truly humbling.
And the pure joy on Brandi’s face at 1:52 when Joni lands her notes so perfectly. Transcendental, for sure. And the words of congratulations. Joni nailed it, and Brandi was there for it; all in.

I said the same thing to myself....
so did I......@@myrcha3875
The cellist, the pianist too! Best arrangement and best time performed ever. I will never be the same.
So shallow...
Thank you everyone and anyone who had anything to do with making this. Thank you Joni. I feel like I've seen the face of god. The laughter at the end is beautiful.
I’m crying and have goosebumps
She sings past the emojis and right to the emotions! Both triumphant and tender! We are seeing Joni from Both Sides Now!!!
I was visiting my mom and was playing the piano at her house, and found a Joni Mitchell songbook. I found the chart for 'Both Sides Now' and started playing... mom came up and stood next to me and started singing it, and then burst into tears.
I love you mom, and thank you Joni.
Can't believe how this affected me. I feared to listen lest I be disappointed, but, even at 78 deep into the second side of life, that was the distinctive voice and stylings of Joni Mitchell. Brought a tear to my eye...
Such nourishment for the soul. Perhaps one of the greatest examples in history of the true power, majesty and pure magical beauty of music. No one adjective can ever do this justice. Bravo Joni. Bravo indeed.
Is it just me but every time I return to hear this, I tear up. 💜💜💜
How can one get through that without tears streaming down one's face? Don't ask me, I couldn't do it. Exquisite.
Joni has touched the heart of the world. There's something of herself in everyone. It's as big as the universe.
I've watched this dozens of times, cried every time. She has been - and still is - such an immeasurable treasure.
Same❤️

Nothing like she used to be ...I find it very sad
@@donkey3187 Oh, she was supposed to stay young just so you wouldn't be sad? Douche.
There are many things that make me proud of my Canadian-ness. Joni's one.
I used to hearing this song as a toddler, now at 54 still listening to it. I will carry this song in me until the time comes that I pass. Thank you so much for this poetry Joni 💝
Brandi Carlile's hand on her heart is touching
So glad I found this video. This song helped through first heartbreak, this stupid girl crying over an idiot boy! Now, am 72 yrs old, married 50 years to a wonderful man who never gave me a reason to shed tears. Thank you Ms Joni for telling us to "look at life from both sides". I still cry listening to this song but appreciate our good fortune for having you in our generation.
Aged 15 in 1970, I bought "Ladies Of The Canyon" from Virgin Mail Order via the Melody Maker. All my life I've gathered just about every recording this woman has made, on every format. When, in 2015, she suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm, I, like so many of us, was utterly devastated. It looked like she would never be able to sing again. So, you can imagine the joy and depth of emotion this "Empress Of Song" is generating in my heart and across the globe right now, as we witness this weekend's magical moments....🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
we are the same age and went through the same feelings....she was my muse as i suffered childhood with her as my balm. I love her still and just never ever want her to die.
The love she created came back to heal her and us 💜
Me too, age 16. Ladies of the Canyon. I still have it.
So nice to hear Joni sing agai
Bluuuuuue album hooked me for life. Thank you Joni! 🥰💃
I come back to this video every now and then; whenever I'm happy, whenever I'm sad... This beautiful, brilliant woman... this song and 'A Case of You' changed my life. I might never get the chance to let Joni know the impact that she had on my life... but I think she knows. I hope she knows.
This is where I come whenever my soul needs peace
