How to Paint a Simple Watercolour Landscape | Watercolour Wash Techniques

Learn how to paint a simple watercolour landscape in this lesson for beginners using the watercolour wash technique and just three colours. Follow along with me in this guide to help expand your knowledge on simple watercolour techniques and be inspired to create something unique of your own.
The washes we will look at in this video are variegated wash (wet into wet) allowing colour to mix on the paper.
The materials we will be using in this video are:
- Saunders Waterford watercolour paper.
- Size 8 and 12 brushes.
- Cadmium Yellow
- Rose Mader
- Manganese Blue

I am an experienced artist and tutor, with a life-long love of painting and drawing and a passion for nurturing those skills in others. I derive immense pleasure from helping others to discover the endless joys (and occasional frustrations) of painting, and to progress, whether they taking their first tentative steps or are seeking to develop their technique and style.

You are a very good Instructor and I'm glad I found your channel. Great painting. I actually have a reference photo which is similar in terms of subject and composition and it's great that with using your method I can now make it my own; using my select colors. I love your idea of painting smaller because I hate wasting paper ,for practice and warm up

Joanne, you are a Godsend to me right now. I'm in the middle of moving house and this means I am not as creatively available for my art as I would like; it hasn't dulled my enthusiasm, just my ability, apparently! So, what a joy to find your videos again after you replied to my comment the other day. I love your painting style and your teaching is clear and detailed and exactly what I needed to take myself completely out of familiar territory and try your bold negative painting approach. I followed your daisy tutorial this morning and was so, so happy with the result. I actually think it's one of the nicest paintings I've ever done. I've just sat down to paint again after an afternoon's packing and I have just painted the most glorious variegated was on the first attempt. I feel like the muse is back, today. Oh joy of joys. Thank you so much for your inspiration, your encouragement to be bold and for teaching in such a way that made it look easy enough for me to commit to having a go. I am over the moon!

You’re not too old, Susie! Like anything, if you put in the time and thought, you can achieve a lot at any age. Practice is important. Just enjoy the process and paint as much as you can. It really doesn’t matter what other people think. It’s your journey.

I have been using acrylic paint for a number of years, particularly during Covid, but don’t find it as portable as use gallery wrap and fluid techniques which take time to dry. But now want to paint while on holiday and at my art group without so much equipment. Your style and tips and techniques really give me help with the transition and am excited about what I can do in a fluid way with watercolour.

Thank you for the inspiration, Joanne. I'm working on a landscape right now. I wanted some light colored "blobs" to represent very light sunshine on leaves......your water sprinkles did the trick. Really enjoyed trying this. It took me 4 attempts to achieve something passable. I learned a lot about how much water to use, quality of paper and patients to allow washes to dry!!!!

My paper buckled a bit, I wondered if this was because I taped it on all four sides?

Brenda If I do tape which isn't often as I use a heavy paper I only tape the top corners this allows the water to escape and the paper not to buckle

I used a number 8 brush and a sword brush

Hi Joanne. I’m brand new to watercolor and was curious how you prep your paper? Do you soak and stretch prior to your tutorials?
Hi Jason the answer is no! I usually use a heavy paper anything over 14plb does not need stretching and can take a lot of water. I just tape the corners of the paper to my board and am ready to go

No the bottom half of the paper was dry but you could still wet it there is no right or wrong way. Keep painting and stay safe 🌈🖌
Thanks for this video. I'm a beginner and want to try this. I don't have Manganese Blue and never know what to sub with. I have Ultramarine Blue and Phthalocyan Blue?
Hi Mo
It really doesn't matter what blue you use as long as you have 3 primary colours red yellow and blue you can experiment with theses colours and take note of the results and use combinations that you like.
@@JBOONTOM Thanks for your prompt response. I will try with each of my 2 blue paints, but, I must admit, it always puts me off tutorials when I don't have a colour recommended.
@@MoMaryR please dont let that worry you! I see that you have Ultramarine I use this colour often. You can paint anything with 3 primary colours
