Greetings Lois from Toronto Ontario 🇨🇦 Great video. Thanks. I'm new to watercolor, have been painting for about one year now. So much to learn. I'm also a senior existing on a small pension so every $ gets counted. I've come to realize that money spent on painting on a budget needs to be prioritized first on paper, second on brushes and third on paint. So, for paper I paint small preferably on 4" X 6" papers. There's lots of advantages to painting small. We don't make watercolor papers in Canada so I have to purchase imports. My preference is for the Fluid brand from the USA which is much cheaper than other imported paper brands. I can get it in 100% cotton hot and cold press but not rough. Plus it comes in 140 lb./300 gsm and 300 lb./640 gsm. Hope this helps your Canadian and American viewers. 🫠
I've discovered that even among 100% cotton papers, there's a big difference in how quickly the paint is absorbed, or how smoothly glazing can be done, or how easily paint can be lifted. I believe that this is due to the sizing that was used in the making of the paper, and wonder if you could discuss that someday? Thank you for your videos! I've received your book and although I no long consider myself an absolute beginner, I'm looking forward to working my way through your demonstrations.
Many thanks, I’m afraid I don’t really know anything about the technical aspects such as sizing, you are probably best to Google it and find an expert! 😊
Hello from France, Lois , Thank you so much for your videos, your voice is so soothing ! It's "learning without tears" ! I like the italien Magnani coton 300gr and the german hahnemuhle pulp 425 gr
Hi Lois! What a really informative and educational video!! I’m a Bockingford man myself. p.s. I am really enjoying your book - such a valuable resource!!
The paper I use most is Fabriano Artistico 100% cotton 300gsm cold press. I use it because it’s vegan friendly but also because I love it. Sometimes I use Bockingford which, as you say, is excellent. Again, 300gsm cold press. While Bockingford is not made using gelatine, they do use wool rollers in the process, which may not work for some vegans. I live with it!
For watercolor, I only use cotton papers. I do not get good results with pulp papers. However, I use the inexpensive pulp papers for my acrylic painting and it works great.
Bockingford and The Langton cold pressed pads have been my usual papers. I have some Arches that I am about to start. I had a lot of hot pressed cards that I have used up. My main issue is getting 9x12 inches so I can use an A4 sized mount. I resent the waste.

Really useful thank you. I like Langton by Daler Rowney the NOT 10 x 7 inch on a pad or block. There is a cotton but not easy to find I stick to pulp

Many thanks! Sadly I don’t think that my publishers plan to publish a Spanish version
I tried many brands and dont found any good wood pulp.
Only cotton. Cheap - baohong. Expensive - arches.
For example, bockingford is easily damaged.
Thanks for sharing 😊
Can yo
U please tell me what you think of w h smith water colour paper
It’s ok for practicing but not really for a finished painting😊
