My road bike is an old clapped out Chinese banger from the 1970's so regardless of what sort of lock I use no one is likely to steal it. So far this cunning strategy has proven to work well for me. 🙂
The beater bike is usually safe without a lock. Unfortunately my folder wouldn't last long, so I lug the unlock.
Correct. I have been commuting by bicycle for 50 years, and would like to add 2 pieces of advice to this video:
1: If your chain is stronger than the bike rack, then the thief will cut the rack.
2: Ugly bikes are hard to sell... and most thiefs steal bikes to sell.
Good information. I have a Kryptonite chain lock + a New York Fahgettaboudit U-lock. Another trick I do is have quick-release pedals and take them off and put in my backpack. So far, so good.
Having had 3 bikes stolen I recommend using a combination of chain and d locks, the more the better and the less likely hood of theft. The vast majority of locks can be cut quickly with an angle grinder. Generally the more you pay for a lock the longer it takes to cut. At the end of the day you are just buying time.
I've seen the new diamond/rubber encrusted D lock gets you 7 minutes against a grinder with 2 disks. But they're the price of a used bike.
I like chains because they can fit around lamp posts unlike d locks
I like the chain lock because you can lock to bigger poles and even some trees 🌲. U lock can be hard to bring with you and needs a skinny pole
If you're going to use a chain, make sure you fit it tight and high off the ground. The crooks often use industrial croppers, putting one arm on the ground and bearing their weight on the other arm to cut. If the chain is high up off the ground, it makes it much harder to get the leverage to cut.
Vancouver's theft rate went down 40%. Register your bike, lock it in pubic, cables don't work.
We fold 2 bikes and U lock them together. Nobody wants to deal with that mess.
Nice practical video, just wondering if you and Mel might go on another travelling adventure this year? Fingers crossed you get the opportunity 😀
The best bike lock will always be the better looking bike standing next to yours with a weaker lock.
Nice mini vid. I just have a variety of chain & key locks (keeping key extra safe!) I don't use cheap combination locks as some people know how to decode them by rattling them! Good to lock through both wheels also (2chains) as otherwise you may find 1wheel gone also!
Yeah agreed. Lock both wheels and frame of leaving your bike in for any length of time in any big city 😉
Use quick release pedals and take the pedals with you when you lock up your bike. Makes your bike even less attractive to thieves.
A chain lock is good not only for preventing stealing, but also protect you from dogs...

Oh that’s great, I just bought kryptonite d lock and chain lock yesterday. Thanks
I used a chain and padlock for years. Passing chain through and old bit of inner tube saves scratching the bike. Now I run a Kryptonite lock but I've upgraded it with a vibration alarm to alert me of tampering.
Main lock is a folding lock, was worth every penny. If I lock my bike for a long time in the downtown area I take my cable lock to lock the front tire and my helmet to that tire. I also have secured my frame bag, handlebar bag, phone bag and dollar store lights with cable ties as people will try and steal those. It seems to work because twice someone has tried to steal the bags off my my bike and were thwarted by the cable ties. I had my dollar store front lights stolen off my bike which was a pain because it was winter and the dollar store doesn't carry the lights in the winter. I had some spares so those got secured with cable ties.
I like the hobo cyclist
I use two locks for securing my Lectric XP 2.0 e bike. The OEM folding lock secures the rear wheel to the frame. My Kryptonite D lock w/cable secures the front wheel and frame to the bike rack. I use a Bell cable lock for my regular Giant Sedona hybrid bicycle. Front wheel, frame to the bike rack. It kills me to see a bike either not locked at all or a flimsy lock simply locking the frame to the bike rack.
I'd avoid the combination locks. They are very easy to crack. Just pull on them, while turning the dials until you feel the loose spots. Still not as fast as a cordless angle grinder though!
I saw a display at a bike shop in Berkley, California, with D locks that had been busted open using diamond car jacks. Also note, the high quality chain locks have square chains. That makes them harder to cut with a bolt cutter, because it has to press on the whole chain at once. With a round chain you can start by cutting just the bit touching the cutters.
it's also very interesting to see the differences in local locking behaviour. In Bejing there were thousands of bikes, hardly chained at all. Just immobilized but not chained to anything! but inj California bikes left like that would disappear very quickly!
Another good way to learn about locks is to ask the hardware store about the best metal cutting tools!
@@hobocyclist once in amsterdam I saw a guy in a high vis vest cutting bike locks off with a battery powered angle grinder, middle of the day, no one seemed to be reacting so I assumed he worked for the city and they considered the bikes abandoned or something?
@@dominictarrsailing it also works while wearing a lab coat or a suit!
@@hobocyclist need to carry a emergency Authority Figure disguise in a sealed vaccum packed bag just in case it is necessary in an situation!
I don't like integrated locks on the chain. Their level of security is generally awful, most of them can be just bumpkeyed open.
Also, locking 2 bikes together means that one thief will get 2 bikes for 1 if he decide to open the lock. Cables are good to secure the bike AND the wheels
acks.
We fold 2 bikes and D lock them together not many thieves are going to bother with that mess.
No it doesn't. We're in the age of cordless angle grinders...like butter.
But it it doens't have to either. Only has to be better than the other guy's lock.
also, always chain up you bike next to a more expensive bike with a cheaper lock!
thats a main character move right there!
