Another tip I've found for converting to 1x is to leave the front derailleur on. If you don't have a clutch rear derailleur there's a good chance your chain will come off even with a narrow wide chainring. Leaving the front derailleur on, but removing everything else including the shifter, means you have a super cheap and functional chain guide. Just adjust the limit screws accordingly.
do i have a mtb? no do i like riding the bike? no do i have any knowledge about bikes? no do i still binge watch seth‘s videos? OUH YES update: I got a good bike and I genuinely enjoy it. :)
If you are on a good bike, you will enjoy it too. It's healthy, good for your environments makes you independent of public transport and allows you to circumvent most heavy traffic you'd encounter in a car. It's cheaper than a car too
Get yourself a Bike maybe start with a more cheap/used bike but dont buy crap, i think seth has some videos about this. Im 14 and make wheelies as far as i want, I ride a littlebit downhill and with friends its amazing do ride a mountainbike if you can controll it and make some tricks with it(took me about 2 years to learn wheelies)
for stuck pins cut a groove with a hacksaw or cutoff wheel (for that sketchy brake bedding tool) then use a flathead screwdriver to remove. Don't forget your safety squints...
you know, it's been a pretty shitty few days, I went otb on a jump and broke 2 ribs, I'll be off the bike for about a month, and this video really cheered me up (especially the part where you take an angle grinder to your front tire to bed in the pads 😂), thanks seth!
Pro tip: when removing the little screws on your pedals and can't get them out, take a hack saw and cut a slit in the top of the screw and use a flathead screwdriver to remove it Edit : works on all exposed screw heads
Even better to cut an X and use a special X screwdriver with flat nose, more grip and less prone to breaking the slot you just created. Also using heat will soften threadlocker fluids
Glad you mention keeping lube away from disc brake rotors. For that reason, I recommend DRIP teflon lube over aerosols hands-down. Triflow 2oz drip bottles come with a straw to help direct lube application, but an ever better solution IMO is to get a finer metal needle lube bottle. Just throw in some old nuts and bolts to act as an agitator to get the teflon off the bottom of the bottle and in solution with a shake before applying to your bike. Look for needle lubers with a screw top and rubber cap for the needle.
Still remember going to the bike shop and asking for some dry lube for my chain and they told me it didn't exist and made me feel pretty embarassed. One of many reasons I won't go back to that bike shop ever again and why I don't like them very much anymore.
Great video. I went from 3x10 to 1x11 (11-46), best thing I did. Gorilla tape for the rims is a great tip, local bike shop recommended it ! Much cheaper than paying for an overpriced rim tape.
Great tips Seth, keep them coming! In addition I can also recommend the following: - carbon bottle holder - neoprene chain guard - chain guide - silicone grips - keramic jockey wheels - designer handlebar cap And removing most decals with a hairdryer makes the bike look more smooth. Cheers from The Netherlands!
Awesome video. You are so right about these upgrades lasting a lifetime. My bike was stolen 3 years ago, but those 10-pack colourful valve caps are still lying around in my garage.
I got a hack for you to get those pesky pins out of the pedals... use a small welder and weld a washer to it. It gives you more substance to grip. I use this trick a lot to remove broken bolts in my line of work.
Im definitely a fan of dry lube keeps it slick no matter what the conditions!! I know its not ideal for everything but in the conditions I ride in its perfect and lasts the longest.
@@mtbboy1993 Im not sure of the brand im not really biased when it comes to that. My last bottle was the WD40 dry lube I do use a lot of it on my chain and cassette before I ride in the snow or rain and it seems fine at the end of an hour ride.
I tend to find that Dry Lube doesn't last all that long on wet muddy rides. Especially once the rear dérailleur is clogged with mud, which can sometimes be as little as 5 mins depending on the trails. So for me I tend to use dry Lube and simply accept that the chain will come back in a pretty bad state. Then my bike sounds quiet and smooth at the very least until I get out of the carpark xD Thankfully I have not had any worse rust than surface discolouration after a ride. That said, I have one bike that has an early 90's (late 80's?) Deore that has no drivetrain rust, seems they made them of more rust proof materials back then rather than light. Whereas my current one started getting surface rust within a few months, despite being lubed before and after each ride.
Hey just a word of advice on how to remove those stainless steel pegs from platform petals. Try using pliers called end cutters or end nippers. They do an awesome job of latching onto even the smallest amount of metal protruding from the pedal. Great content as always, keep up the great work!
You should've mentioned that dry lube washes away very easily and isnt very durable, making it a not bad choice in wet conditions. I didn't know this and almost bought dry lube in winter. Great video as always :D

You can also convert a 3x drivetrain to a 2x by removing the largest chanting and replacing it with a bash ring from BBG Bashguard. Did this on my old XC bike, and it's great! You can not combine Aluminium and steel or other noble metals with electric contact. The least valuable metal (less noble) is going to dissolve in a kind of electric cell („battery“). That‘s why the alu cap was getting crusty.

Hahaha he makes the Tubeless setup and 1x conversion sound like a cakewalk 😄 No mention of chain cross, or the painfull initial tubeless setup. Its all doable, just might lead to some issues for the less mechanically inclined if they jump in thinking thats all they need to know.
Unless you're exclusively riding downhill or low-speed trials, there is never a good reason to switch to a 1x drivetrain. The extra gear range is ALWAYS more valuable. If your chain pops off more than once in a blue moon, it means your derailleurs are badly configured. You need to move your front derailleur down until it _juuuuust_ barely clears the chainrings when shifting, and you need to increase the spring tension on your rear derailleur to keep the chain taut. A 1x system will actually make chain-drops _more_ likely in certain circumstances, because the rear derailleur cage has to be longer to accommodate a wider range of sprocket diameters, and thus has less leverage to keep the chain taut. That's why clutched rear derailleurs had to be invented in the first place. A 2x/3x drivetrain can use closer-ratio sprockets and a shorter-cage rear derailleur, which will have more leverage to keep the chain taut.
I also run on the largest sprocket on rough terrain to keep good tension on the chain and rear derailleur, then when you come a steep climb I can easily shift the front down a sprocket for a big decrease in gear ratio👌🏽
