Love seeing Shane utilize his TKD roots. Ive always wanted to see a kickboxer with TKD, Muay Thai, and Western Boxing. You cover all your striking bases.
Thanks for the tips. I've been doing martial arts for 24 years, practicing styles that mostly focus on kicking like TKD, Shao Lin, and Muay Thai. My avatar is literally a picture of my doing a side kick. Yet I was still able to learn something about side kicks from watching this video. That's why I love martial arts. Its a never ending journey.
Plus side: Your kicks and slow balance have improved vastly, great to see. Negatives; your range is off in some instances, as you promote the upright torso, and omit to mention that the side kick is damn useful for going to those floater-ribs underneath a straight punch that's aimed at your face (which means you have to lean away from the punch). The common training drill for this close range, fast kick is to stand side-on to the bag with your outstretched hand just touching the bag, as soon as you retract your hand you lean back and kick as fast as possible mid-height.
The side kick is a vastly underrated technique in MMA. It can be both a great defensive and a vicious offensive move. It is much more powerful than a roundhouse and requires less space to throw. It can be used as an effective counter for lots of moves, including a roundhouse kick. I think a lot of TKD/Karate kicks are overlooked. Another good one is the hook kick and its variations. A proper spin hook kick to the temple can drop a man like a limp sack of potatoes and is very sneaky and hard to block. I’m glad to see more fighters realizing the value of these techniques.
Great stuff. I think one reason why you don't see the side kick so much in MMA is because it is harder to pull off than say the roundhouse. But it a good thing to have in the arsenal for all the reasons you've mentioned. I went from a trad karate school to cross train in MMA and got some good mileage out of your first example, the lead jab followed by the side to the body. I am also really fond of your lead-cross then rear side. It's much safer to kick full contact with a side than a front kick when you are barefoot. Got broke toes once from kicking to the body with a front kick.
Thanks for having us out, coach! I see those Blackhouse guys throwing side kicks, that's how I know they work 😉 Evan crushed it, and he appreciates the opportunities ahead 🙏

I’ve landed sidekicks in three fights and practice it as much or more than round kicks. However I’m starting to have hip issues so not sure how to adjust. Good stuff Shane.
I like the standing tall concept is something I haven't though of, but something I like to do and something that has been thought to me is to give it a little of shoulder, so instead of looking with your body straight you are looking over your shoulder when kicking. I feel that it gives more power to the kick wich can very in use I think
Points of importance for a more powerful sidekick also. Try and keep your back heel on the floor as much as possible to be more enforced when the kick is landing. Try and twist the hips in also not just the leg extension as it’ll add more speed and just more power. Watch how joe rogan throws a side kick. Make sure the knee is high when chambering, if it’s too low you probably have to over turn your hips to get height and its more like a bad back kick.
Great video, great form. But I disagree about the side kick to the leg not hyperextending the knee. If you hit the quadracept it may or may not, but to the knee it most definitely will. I used it a lot when I bounced in some really bad bars, and it most definitely hyperextend the knee. Also I think there have been "documented" examples in MMA fights.

Wouldn't it be preferred to target the knee when you're defending yourself? I mean its a sensitive joint, is it better to go higher or straight for the knee?

Hey Shane, I am following alot of your tips and advices but I stil have a question unanswered: What is your opinion and maybe experience on doing cardio (e.g. running/jumprope) with wheights on your body (e.g. wheigted vest) for increasing stamina. Speaking of 5-10%(max) of your own bodyweight. @fightTIPS
My only counterargument for the pull at the beginning is that its defensive. You can still generate power and the pull back gets you out of range for a counter punch or kick to the face. You're not losing power when doing that.
I noticed that you mentioned lowering the torso. Well if you lower yourself and it puts more downward press on your planted foot. You've given yourself a greater force to go against with your kicking leg. So, then your kicking leg can deliver more power. Example: How much power would your sidekick have if you were standing on ice? And, when you hit your target much of your power went into pushing your body back in a slide away from your opponent. Your target wouldn't feel much power delivered into them.
You can lean back slightly but when you snap the kick out your base leg should angle forward. That drives the power forward. The sidekick is strong and can be better than a front kick if your stance is more narrow. Turning the heel up gets the glutes into the kick and makes it crazy strong.
Serious question: If kicking is part of your self defense arsenal for daily life, how should you buy pants? "Athletic jeans" that stretch? Sizing? Any input from ANYONE on this thread, is appreciated. I do security for a living, by the way.

Throwing your torso back doesnt divide the energy in your body and take away from the kick it adds to the hip thrust if you do it fast and dont stay back to long adds more force to the first kick you were exolaining and doesnt take away from the force your leg generates as it extends plus it adds extra protection since your head is so far back
@Follow the howl Let's get into some deep thoughts man.. If a person is going to press against something, they need to brace themselves right? Push a refrigerator on your knees in slippery pants and push a fridge on your feet with rubber-soled shoes. So, the power comes from having your weight over your feet more (better bracing yourself), and being in a physical position to have your muscles work right. Basically I agree with you. Except this leaning over stuff isn't like a piston in a horizontal engine (boxer). It's about bracing in order for the power to have a base to press against. imho.
I personnaly love the shuffle side kick, it's like a charge and it's really good against a opponent which had is back to a wall. He knows but he's expexting front and push kicks so you're to far from to him to do that and BOOM ! 😁

Can you make a video on good defense for boxing and Muay Thai because a lot of times people worry more on offense and don’t care about the punches landing on their heads; whereas good defense like Mike Tyson will make you a more efficient fighter
Rogan teaches sidekick a little bit differently when it comes to generating power. According to him, the power comes from the twist of the torso, yet you said it's important to stand tall and this way the power is generated to the target. My experienceis that "twisting the torso" power is way better than standing tall type of power. It's not as fast though. Any comments Shane?
Different styles of martial arts do it differently. If you're a really light weight person it's hard to be that heavy in place. So a hard sidekick that you throw might push you back. But if you lower yourself and twist your body, you're doing two things to build a force for the sidekick to press against, as a launching base. You might want to contemplate some physics. Newton's third law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
An excellent channel, but there's one point that could use some more accuracy. imho. At 1:06, Shane says to stand tall. And, that's a good point, but the part about half your energy going one way and half going the other isn't really in line with physics. Say you chamber your leg and bend away from the potential kick, so your upper body is parallel to the floor. But don't throw the kick, just stand there. Sure you may tip over, but was there any significant energy that went towards your head? Instead, your upper body momentum went in a downward arc, with your hips as a fulcrum. Time to cut to the chase. The ground is what you brace yourself against when sending out your sidekick power. As long as your foot on the ground, and the leg above it are something stable enough to brace against. What your straight up body actually does is locate more weight over your planted leg and foot. And, therefore its the leg plant that is the opposite force from the kick. Probably why it's often mentioned in martial arts to root oneself. I await everyone's corrections of my logic.
It's not a "physics" based problem, Shane doesn't literally mean energy. It's a physiological thing. When you lean away, you use different muscle groups to propel the leg to the target than if you were standing tall. At the same time, your body also has to stabilise your torso and balance at a much more severe angle than standing tall. So the combination of these factors means that you can't throw the side kick with maximum power when leaning over, because the muscles that should be explosively engaging to fire that kick are busy stabilising your core, and your spine is out of alignment.
