5 Variations of (Round) Low Kicks
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- When we think of Muay Thai, we picture that low roundhouse kick to the legs, but there are many different variations and functions of this kick. Most of them are meant to do damage, to break down the muscles/ligaments in the thigh, but some are used to off-balance and create distractions. Let's take a look at 5 different ways of throwing a round kick to the legs.

great tips my grandma doesn't even stand a chance
☠
a lot of people who try to initiate a fight wouldn't be either, lmao
Would throw these low kicks more but I've still got the image of Silva's floppy shin engraved on my mind.
Then set them up. Don't just kick after a combination or for the sake of kicking. Set them up with hands, change the level of your kicks to keep the opponent guessing. As in go to the body until you make them believe the next kick is going to the body, then chop away at the leg. Break the rhythm of your kicks too so as soon as you're about to throw the kick & you see the opponent is ready to check it, keep the kick chambered or stall the kick a bit until the opponent puts his/her leg back down then right as they put that weight back down on their leg, kick the hell out of it. Use feints & get your opponent off balance, then kick while they're trying to regain that balance. There's so many ways to land a kick you just have to get creative. Good luck & have fun!
John Y Low kicks are too easy for me to set up. I almost get bored of it in sparring that I end up trying other things, only to go back to low kicking without realising because it's now natural for me. I'm guessing you haven't been training for that long. The most important this is to set them up with punches. Throwing the kick without delay immediately after landing a left hook or as they back away. Observe your opponent's stance: Are they even ready to check low kicks? Are they heavy or light on their lead leg? Are they standing square or in a sideways stance? If your opponent loves to check kicks, fake the low kick before landing punches and finish with the kick again. Also, when you're opponent commits to throwing a punch, they have all their weight on the lead leg, unless they are floating in the air lol. And when all their weight is on their lead leg, it's impossible to check the kick.
To summarize:
- Punches first. The left hook especially.
- As they are punching they can't check low kicks.
- Trick them if they like to check kicks, and then throw the kick.
- If you block their kick, immediately counter with low kick.
Kick with instep bro, it will stomp down shin check

That is funny...that was a shocking moment of ouch
thanks my grandma couldnt react to this kicks at all
I can hit the torso when I do weak leg roundhouses, but my lead leg is severely lacking in both flexibility and dexterity. Practicing these low kicks has been a godsend so far, even if I only use lead leg low kicks as distractions.

now this was great content. your gave me everything i need to practice it and how to land it. plus i love kicks
Wow I can’t believe I’ve never heard of the concept aim with your knee, that actually helps me a lot
2:50 beyond Randy Couture, Dan Henderson LOVES to use the front inside leg kick and then throw the H-Bomb to follow. He brutally KO'd Bisping with that combo.
The kick freezes the opponent, and the cross smashes the stationary opponent.
Thanks for the wonderful fight tips bro 👍. Feel that i should come to your hometown and try you once 😁
Hey Shane! Could you do a variation of this video from the southpaw stance?
I understand that everyone has their own way of doing things, but in my opinion personally....for an outside leg kick, I like the Muay Thai style kick because it not only has more of a hip rotation, but less risk of injuring your leg upon your opponent checking the kick. As for a dutch style tho, I personally would go for more of an inside leg kick. The result is a beautiful setup for other combos.
Muay thigh kicks is how you break your leg. so much telegraph
Precision beats power & timing beats speed
Precision with power beats everything

Great video Shane like always. One question, where can I get those shorts you're wearing?
My favorite low kick is when you hit with a bent knee and extend it when you make contact, it is a VERY powerful kick
Isn't that a core principle for all roundhouse kicks? At least that's what I was taught.
@@Elmy_Kiu I was taught this way, it was a "trick" my master taught to have better kicks, I've never seen somebody out of my club do it, I've always seen people "chopping" at the leg.
Where did you learn it?
@@snakeoveer1046 I learned it from TKD. Basically, I was told that if I wanted to hit someone at the right temple, for instance, I should aim for the left temple instead, so that I would never fully extend it beforehand. Despite that, there were lots of people in that club/school that always extended it right before or when they made contact.
@@Elmy_Kiu seems like we know a secret kicking technique
@@snakeoveer1046 I'm not sure about how secret it really is but it's effective for sure.
Do u hit with the side or the middle of the shin for dutch style?

Hey there Shane!
I have a question. I've been training recently on the heavy bag doing my kicks, but after training, I always get this sore feeling on my right ankle when I dorsiflex. My left ankle is fine though.
Is this just part of training, or am I kicking the bag wrong? This never happens when I train with thai pads.
You should try stiffining (contracting) up your ankle when shooting for kicks because what these instructors don't teach you is to not let your ankles fly loose when your kicks lands. It also helps bare pain more when landing.
Did you watch canelo
Hey Shane love your vids! Any tips on low kicks for southpaw guys? Whether you're fighting in southpaw or against someone who is
If you use a southpaw stance against an orthodox, control the opponent's hands, right hook to the body and then left low kick to the inner sx thigh. (Ernesto Hoost )
You may want to consider also kicks to the arms (when guard is up) to counter fighters that are heavy hitters or have good boxing skills. (Samkor is probably the greatest southpaw heavy-kicker Muay Thai fighter of all times)

More like “How To Give Wicked Charlie Horses”. that inner thigh is so soft and meaty and vulnerable. I caught a shin to the front/inner quad HARD yesterday so this is great timing. Good shit as always
Yeah who are these mysterious people who say inside leg kicks don't work? That shit hurts dude
Ethan To there’s something mentally draining about it too because it doesn’t look or connect like a devastating head or body kick so it feels like it hurts waayyy more than it should.
My left kick is too weak to make it hurt, but definitely works as a nuisance, and my pendulum step doesn't have too much power.
Have you checked out MMAShredded's leg kicks? They are so on point and clean every single time. Also Shane, I wonder if you could go on the Joe Rogan Experience?
waterlegend72 No offense to Shane at all, but Joe Rogan has MMA champions and their specialist coaches on the podcast along with renowned Physicists/Physicians followed by Navy Seals and CEO’s. Shane is not going to be remotely interesting enough at this point in his life for a 3 hour podcast. Good video tho, most of these are for casual fans and people who do not train regularly.
@@JohnsArchipelago ya that's when I started watching these I was just a casual trying to figure out all my Thai kicks.
@@JohnsArchipelago if he can become possibly a coach and start to become a coach for mma fighters then to champs its possible but for now no
John Yi that’s not true, dickhead. Joe had on a sort of but not really well known ufc fighter named suga Sean and he was being as hell. He hS barely accomplished anything in his career and is suspended for cheating.
Jeez Freedom.. Why the salt? =D Shane on JRE would be awesome! i think that Joe has a pretty long queue tho...
The hooker v barboza fight shows that inside leg kicks work
That's the 3rd comment I've seen about this fight. I need to go watch the replay!
Hooker said he was invincible. Lol
GSP vs Koschek is also a good example of the inside low kick
@@robertrobertson8575 Barboza Vs Pettis and Tyrone Along Vs Angel De Anda are the best examples. Along with Thiago Silva Vs Jared Torgenson.

Great tips bro. The same can be applied for head kicks too. Sometimes it is much better to invest more time in improving the speed kick since it takes less effort with a higher accuracy.
Is that because of Barboza fight ?or it is just a coincidence
I actually didn't get to see it yet -- but I heard it was awesome!

He's looking at me like "just give me a reason bro..." 😬
3:02 with that kick my Muay Thai coach always taught me I MUST step to the out side with the back leg before throwing that kick; other than giving it more power it actually is a lot more safe.
I did it once without stepping to the outside and it hit my sparring partners knee instead of his calf.. and even with shin guards my shin suffered a HUGE swelling (luckily nothing was broken but I couldn't use that leg for 2 weeks.
soo... yeah! step to the outside! lol :)
@Leroy Jenkins is that Bubba Jenkins??! =D
@Leroy Jenkins LoL sorry there's an MMA fighter that appears on the channel called Bubba Jenkins that appears on this channel sometimes; thought it might be you LOL! xD
You're damn right about leg kicks tho.
Do a kind of "try to unbalance someone with kicks/punch ( not wresling or judo) " exists?
I find it interesting that the first kick is so known as being "Thai style." I have only ever been taught the jump/step low kick by white dudes. Thais have never taught me that.
Dont know where he got this Information but dutch style kick like we do in Germany and Netherlands is the first kick he show like Thai kick
million dolla baby i’m training in france and my coach as 30 years of exp approx and teach my exactly the same way as you
Peter "The dutch lumberjack" Aerts. Kicks like this as well. like the name suspects, He uses his leg as an axe.
Seems like he was using Mr.Perfect as the baseline rather than dudes like aerts and dekkers
Of course that both ways of kicking are used by fighters some just prefer one over other. It depends on the situation, of course that Dutch fighters also use axe like kicks.
That's exactly what I was thinking
Awesome skill
So he said that the "Dutch" style kicks aren't so much for doing damage, can someone tell me how they should be used? I find that I naturally throw the kicks in more of an upward motion so I'd like to know how to capitalize on it and use it correctly
They absolutely do damage, but you just get more momentum when you kick down. Use both; use a hybrid, even! And don't forget the importance of hitting the SAME spot over and over, to wear down on the leg.
@@fighttips thank you so much for the advice Shane! I also just wanted to say thank you for being so interactive with your fans and replying to comments to help us improve!
Of course, buddy! That's what I'm here for 🙏
Nate Lahr use them to change levels mid combination but stay in the pocket and come off the kick with punches. Your opponent will think low when you tap the leg but then gets blasted with punches right behind it.
Kyokushin low kicks are powerful as much as muay thai low kicks, but more versatile because in kyokushin they're also kick with the heels to the legs..and those are devastating kicks. I think all the kicks in kyokushin karate are very powerful and develop to stop the opponent.
Zach N Muay Thai also has kicks with the heels...lol
My thaiboxing or muay thai instructor taught us to do exactly that power kick. But not twist the foot as much. I don’t know about that, is he correct? He also told us to keep our hands by the end of our eyebrows the sides closest to the ears.
I'm creating my own fighting style which is more focused on defense and counter by dropping people down and these kicks help me to make more moves. Thank you and please don't blame me for using your video as references .
Edit : I call it CQSD art ( close-quarter self defense art )

Ah damn! That sucks.
What a shity story bro
Michael Bryant yo man props to you for owning up to an L to strangers online, finally, not some goof telling people how ineffective it is because “in their fight they didn’t need to kick because they KO’d someone with one punch”
ไทย🥰🇹🇭🇹🇭
Thanks Shane, I am more of a Dutch kick-boxer, then Muay Thai, but I need to watch more videos like this, because for the past couple of years.I have been struggling to throw the perfect round house kicks.
I always practice different variations of that roundhouse kick and someone's always trying to say that it's wrong
That's because most people learn striking in a McDojo. If you threw a leg kick EXACTLY like Ernesto Hoost, a lot of coaches would try to "fix" it, bc it isn't textbook. His leg swings wide, chops downward, and then snaps upward at the last second to create maximum damage. Far from textbook yet the most effective low kicker in history.
He even checked kicks the "wrong" way. But it worked.
That said, if your kicks are working in sparring/fights, fck em.
I changed my kckboxing gym and after watching this I realized the first one was about power kicks and the second one about speed kicks. I thought the second gym was doing it wrong but now I know the truth. Thanks Shane.
I love these videos keep them coming...also i started doing short kickboxing film study on my channel
Watch out doing those soccer-style kicks where you don't pivot your base foot, that's how Thiago blew his knee out vs Jon Jones
*That moment when you tune into fight tips after training and see the same moves that were taught at class by your Sensei who doesn't watch UA-cam*
That TaeKwondo vs Muay Thai video you did with Kwonkicker was what got me to start spam watching videos from you and him along with guys like Wmpyr and such. Definitely helped me in my Martial Arts journey and the videos you guys release still are a big part of my training with my friends and such. So just saying a big thank you to you guys as I look to become a pro fighter and awesome instructor. Osu!

YES i missed the game glad the bears won
I love to throw that inside kick, but angle it upwards, about 45 degrees. It takes the leg off the floor and impacts the balance. People who say it's ineffective, are throwing it wrong
Great explanation! I was wondering, how can you defend or block the inside leg kick? Having a hard time in sparring (and also I can assure you it does hurt!)
Affirm Shane :)
Easy! Slightly lift your knee and turn it inward, so they hit the top of your shin instead of your inside thigh.
Kinda late since video came 5 years ago but. I have a question. Is your leg supposed to be straight when kicking, the one with which you kick in thigh.
Very awesome video I love the breakdown. I got confused on the terminology, I'm guessing the shuffle is pretty much the switch kick as you demonstrated during Inside and Scoop kick?
Comments like "Xyz wont work in a fight" almost always come from people that have never fought before and cant touch their toes haha
Very good but can you learn us the defence of low kicks of mui thai can we use of our knee? But i think that thay use diagonal kicks

Man your the best ever!!!!!!
Is there a way I can toughen up my shins not only for kicks but blocking kicks
A good example is Gaethje vs Poirier, OUch.
You know what would be cool, a video of just leg exercises for fighters (if you don't already have one) training the upper body and core has aways been rather easy to me but I never know what to do with my legs in a workout aside from squats movement drills and some kicks against the heavy bag but I feel like one could definitely do more

I've been hear since you had 700k
San shou/Sanda kicking is similar to a combination of Dutch and Thai kicking. The outward turning of the rooted (non kicking) foot with an upward trajectory to the thigh slightly above the knee. An alternative target is the fibular head (slightly below the knee) where the Common Peroneal (fibular) nerve travels. In inside roundhouse with the pulling sweep can also be used to set up takedowns and throws.
Just a thought or two.
Great videos. Subscribed.
Here's a GREAT video on how to throw the leg kick and avoid getting knocked out in the process ua-cam.com/video/jVt62dnUDUY/v-deo.html
Hey Shane! If i was sparring or in a match I definitely wouldn't do this. But in a self defense situation when the attacker may not have experience and/or is truly trying to harm me, would it be effective to throw a hard outside leg kick right on the knee joint?
Works but incredibly risky, all they would have to do is get in a checking motion and you’d probably break your shin connecting with the bent knee bone
❤❤❤
Great!
I have a question regarding the inside kick. Why not hit the side of the knee? Is it more effective to hit the inside of the calf?
High chance to hurt your own shin or foot. Check out Dieselnoi, he blocks low kicks with a knee right into their shin.
