Not bad, but the first professional production of Faust I ever saw was the NYCO production on tour in Los Angeles with Norman Triegle as Mephistopheles.I'm spoiled rotten.
This is what i think of when i picture Satan and his demons are revealed. Amazing performance albeit evil. He cares not for money..he’s here for souls.
U may be right. A bass is more a 'satanic' type of voice i saw this production with Tomlinson as Mephistopelis and he was brilliant but i would not discard this one
Probably the most out of tune I’ve heard of this aria, and I have heard some. I’m also a professional orchestral musician who have played this opera multiple times.
I'm rather shocked at how poor his French pronunciation is. "Lay voh door?" There are pitch problems to boot, and I really hate the overdone rubato to start the 2nd verse.

Faust was my first encounter with opera a few days ago. I was excited. But this performance is the one I watch again and again. Thank you!
Ghiaurov is Mephistofeles. Always he is.
Always thought of Méphistophélès as a bigger voice, but Erwin Schrott has changed my mind! I LOVE him in this role! He’s spectacular!
I think he’s a bass-baritone - he does Leporello and Escamillo.
The evil laugh was an nice touch!
Én a gúnyos "Ah!"-ot a zene elhalkulása után kiabálnám, h hatásosabb legyen... jó az énekes, jó a rendezés...BRAVO!

I was there. It was magnificent !
Your a very lucky person. Royal Opera House is too far from where I live (Veracruz, Mexico). Hope to visit someday.
At least you're in the western hemisphere. Im Singaporean 😭😭@@megustaelindie
One of the few times this aria was not sung like a buffa role... and actually gave me the serious creeps - as it should.
Try also this ua-cam.com/video/5q4cB58eGSQ/v-deo.html
Maybe it's because he can't.
@@definitelynosebreatherand maybe his performance proves he shouldn’t, because his was better than the rest?
Seeing Erwin Schrott performing is on the top 5 of my bucket list

Perfect for Halloween.
The production values are insane.
Maravilloso ímpetu representativo
Bravo, Erwin Schrott!!!! el mejor bajo de nuestro tiempo.
Cooking time 🥘 🍷😏
Masterpiece. Bravissimo!
I'm obsessed with Erwin's interpretation
It is truly amazing, I just came recently and already want to hear more of this man (and, of course, the complete opera).
Yes!
Look at how the Idol of the Golden Calf still holds its sway over humanity and Satan grinning gleefully joins in their dance

Quel punch ! Merci pour ce moment vivement Orange cet été pour vous retrouver en Don Giovanni

A virtuoso performance by Mr. Schrott, even if he sounds more baritonal than bassish. Great choreography and dancing too.
Wicked good Thanks to All. Keeping Classical Alive. Bella

He has a fine voice, but I want more horsepower on this aria, e.g. Ghaiurov.
As this is Victorian era garb, one would think that Méphistophélès was Adolfo Pirelli, da king of da barbers, da barber of kings. 😆😜
L'enfer est au rendez-vous

Hello Neighbor :D

I thought this was supposed to be a bass role.
Well he's a bass-baritone. Saw him twice at the ROH in this production and he was spectacular
@@mastermalaprop Hmm. Seems miscast to me vocally.
It was ;))))))
Not a bass voice this is an insult to my ear to call this a voice of any standard is pathetically misguided
@@karldelavigne8134 I agree with you there. Needs a much darker voice
Natália Caroline Nascimento Portilho 👑🛡️🤭
Poor Royal Opera House...
True! not anywhere near Ghiaurov or Christoff
Thanks Neighbor, We know you sold your soul to the Devil while you were reading Faust.
Sorry but i hear some pitch problems...
So do I. Very clearly
Turn off your troll-o-phones and he'll sound better.
@@Muttonchop_USA Come up with an actual point and then you might even make sense.
Not only the pitch, the sound is horrible
Agreed, and his timbre is that of a baritone, not even a bass-baritone. His French diction is rather poor, too. "Lay voh door?" Oy vey!
Effrayant
oh my god it's Jesus in the background
This is what i think of when i picture Satan and his demons are revealed. Amazing performance albeit evil. He cares not for money..he’s here for souls.

Çok güzel🪄
Wonderful interpretation but lacking the voice required for the role. A true bass is sorely missing.
U may be right. A bass is more a 'satanic' type of voice i saw this production with Tomlinson as Mephistopelis and he was brilliant but i would not discard this one
@@paoloardisson2895I can, the lack of bright in the high notes tells you that he is probably and undeveloped baritone, or even worse, a tenor.

Плохо, что на фоне Святого Креста.
Why the cross. Thát is a kermesse
poor voice , tempo troppo rapido ! poor recornding !
Out of tune
Not so - just overpitched... and purposely so.
Christoff and Ghiaurov must be rollin' over in their graves
I think they are. It's so lackluster. Christoff and Ghiaurov had deeper darker voices which is what the roles needs
@@WelahHomo87 This role needs a real bass or bass-baritone. And not a baritone (not the first) who said he was bass-baritone and everyone rolled with it.
So out of tune, unfortunately……
What a terrible Mephistopheles. Excellent miscasting.
Terrible everything. The only role this clown is suitable for is the title role in Shostakovich's "The Nose."
This is a Baritone who tries to sing bass... I don't like it.
Edwin Schrott , what a bad Mefistofele.Terrible basse.He is a mediokra bariton.
Not a very good singer,He is not a bass bariton. He was married to Anna Netrebko.I dont like him.
So out of time! No depth in his voice.
I agree it's why I love Ghiaurov singing it
out of pitch a lot of times
Pitchy!!
