Thank you very much for this video. I was able to pull my first alternator out of my 2003 Nissan Altima. I was able to cheat a little. I took out the top and bottom bolts because I couldn’t get the belt to slide off even pushing on the tensioner. The bottom bolt I had to finish with a 14 mm crescent wrench. I was able to pull up the fuse box just enough to get that bolt to slide out because I didn’t have the right tool to take out the fuse box bolt. Then I used the pry bar to push to the alternator out and as it dropped the tension in the belt released enough to pull the alternator out without having to remove the belt from the pulley. This video was extremely useful for a backyard mechanic like myself
For those saying you need to remove the fuse box and coolant container, you really dont have too. I also thought I was going to need to do so, but if you pull the fuse box up enough, it gives clearance for the long bolt to come out. Then again I was being a bit lazy to take another 5-10mins to remove everything lol. But great video as always!
Thank you! This video saved me $200 in labor. We did have to take out the coolant overflow and the entire fuse box to get that long bolt out but it was worth it!
Yep had to do this to. Not as hard as I thought it would be. Protip is you don't have to remove the last fuse box bracket bolt, you can just pivot it to get the bolt out of the way

Posting some feedback for others, as I just spend ~2 hours working on this. First, the video is supper helpful. The tools needed are 100% correct, and the order of things to do is correct. However, if you have an older car, and depending on the model, here are the things I ran in to while taking on this task. -- 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5 1. Check the wires that feed in to the alternator. The tape and the plastic wrap that holds the wires for signs of damage because you want to fix that. ASAP. I re-wraped mine in high-temp tape they use for HVAC. The plastic and the electrical tape will only last so long. 2. In the video the presenter mentions that fuse box being in the way, when yes it is. In fact the bracket was completely in the way on my car, and the bolts were rusted to the bracket. After a lot of WD40 and patience I was able to get the bracket loose enough to wiggle it out of the way get the bottom bolt of the alternator out. 3. The space you are working in is super tight. Have on hand some pipe to use to as a breaker bar to break the bolts loose if needed, or you can use that trick with open ended wrenches and link them for leverage. 4. Consider some velcro or zip ties to secure the belt in a place where it won't move out of place and fall off the other pulleys. I lucked out because I had something in my box. If you don't, it could move out of place and now you need to get under the car to see the back of the block, or really skinny arms, flashlights, and mirrors on the floor to see what you are doing. 5. On my car, the break light and battery light came on (no check engine) when I had the battery checked at the auto parts store. When I replaced the alternator, all the red lights went away as the computer reset. Keep in mind, some lights could reappear later on, and you will need to have it checked out. The computer in the car will do weird things when the power is not consistent. Sort of like when HAL in 2001 a space odyssey. Have fun folks!
@@znhait that's exactly what mine is doing now (Brake and battery light come on. Usually they flicker. I've never seen them come on solid and stay on they flicker and my car loses acceleration then will catch and drive fine again. Now it died completely this initially happened about a month ago and I had my battery, alternator and starter tested. The battery was bad I replaced it and the terminals. Since its flickering and the engine basically does the same could it also be an electrical issue? Wiring to the alternator? When it flickers the electronics (display lights, headlights, radio, etc) still work. When I see the brake and battery light display a solid bright red its pretty much instant that the car completely shuts down.

if you have a 2005 you will have to remove the two bolts holding fuse compartment as there wont be enough clearance when backing the lower 14mm bolt out because it will hit the metal frame holding the fuse box...just did it today...
Yep, and when you put the bolt back in, I recommend using an extension on your rachet and using that extra space to clear the alternator pulley allowing you to have a lot longer strokes of your ratchet

Great vid. After forgetting a wire, my car wouldn't start and gave p1760. Attached the missing wire, cleared the code. All seems well. This fixed my problem with the belt vibrating loudly every so often.
Video was very helpful especially when it came time to move the tension idler. I thought I was going to have to loosen it and then readjust...very helpful! I would recommend removing the coolant overflow container (2 bolts), then lift the fuse compartment and finally remove the 2 bolts holding the fuse compartment bracket. This takes only 3-4 minutes and gives tons of clearance for the long bolt and easier access to the tension idler. No burns or busted knuckles this way ;-)

I was freaking out. The first video I watched about adjusting the tension did not apply to my car. Following your instructions turned out to be super easy! The lower bolt on my 06 Altima is butted up against the metal bracket of the fuse box and still seems to be threaded in a quarter of an inch, I'm feeling frustrated and stuck

This worked pretty well for my 2005 SL. But I had to remove the coolant overflow tank and the mounting bracket for the relay box, because the bottom bolt wouldn't clear the relay box mount. It was a bit of a pain, but gave me lots more room, too. Not sure what was different about mine, but there was no way that it was coming out without moving that bracket. Other than that, great instructions! Thanks.

Thanks for the video! I just did my 2004 Altima. The only modification is that I had to unscrew the fuse box mounting bracket to get enough clearance to get the bolt out. I didn't have to remove the whole thing, just slide it over a little.
how did u get the fusebox to slide up a little? cant seem to get this one to slide up enough to put bolt back in. had to walk away and try another time. workin on a 03 altima
Very helpful! only on a 2003 Sentra SER spec V the tensioner bolt is down a bit farther and the belt was a little tricky to get back on by myself, Had a friend help hold the back part while i released the pressure on the bolt. Other than that great guide!
At least the Nissan engineers were smart enough to mount the alternator front and topside for easy access. The stupid Kia engineers mounted it rear and bottom, making it very difficult to remove and replace. It picks up a lot of dust and road grime and fails prematurely.
I tried replacing my alternator but the second screw the one on the side you said to loosen it up so I could pull the screw out didn’t work. I had to remove the screws from the bottom and removed the whole bracket instead of just screw on the side fuses box. Thanks you for the video you posted on UA-cam.
Never use a pry bar to remove a bolt. Instead move the fuse block out of the way it just lifts up once the tabs are released. The bracket is actually what blocks the bolt removal. So loosen one bolt and remove the other. Now you can pivot the bracket out of the way and the bolt is easily removed. This way you won't damage the threads of the bolt with a pry bar or bend the bracket making installing the fuse block difficult.
Thanks for answering :-). I'll post my experience for others... The Sentra (1.8 L), while similar, had some differences. I think it uses a completely different belt system. I ended up taking the bearing off, but I think there is probably an easier way. Also, there are 3 bolts, not 2. And one of the bolts was incredibly difficult to get out. I'd recommend hitting each of the bolts with a lubricant and giving it some time, because one of them I had to give it overnight, and then was able to get out in the morning. Also, the third one comes out directly into the heat shield, and I couldn't get it out easily. The only ratchet I had that would fit was about 6 inches long. And I had a breaker bar, but there just wasn't enough room to get it in, even after taking off the heat shield. In the end, I just sprayed it with some lubricant and went to bed, and it came out in the morning. I think a wrench that could angle at like 45 degrees, and perhaps a cheater bar would be useful,as it's rather difficult to get in there. Or maybe accessing from the bottom, but there isn't much space. Finally, the Sentra is a subcompact. There just isn't much space. I had to remove a couple other bolts just to get it out. So in the end, it probably only took me about 6 hours to do a job that would probably take a mechanic 30-60 minutes to do.

That’s how you know it’s not a battery problem, but an alternator problem. Just when my car was about to die, the ABS light also came on.

I would like to mention that on my 2006 Altima , I also had to remove the fuse box bracket in order to get that lower alternator bolt out. FYI !!

Torque spec for 14mm bolts?

I'll post my experience for others...
The Sentra (1.8 L), while similar, had some differences. I think it uses a completely different belt system. I ended up taking the bearing off, but I think there is probably an easier way.
Also, there are 3 bolts, not 2. And one of the bolts was incredibly difficult to get out. I'd recommend hitting each of the bolts with a lubricant and giving it some time, because one of them I had to give it overnight, and then was able to get out in the morning.
Also, the third one comes out directly into the heat shield, and I couldn't get it out easily. The only ratchet I had that would fit was about 6 inches long. And I had a breaker bar, but there just wasn't enough room to get it in, even after taking off the heat shield. In the end, I just sprayed it with some lubricant and went to bed, and it came out in the morning. I think a wrench that could angle at like 45 degrees, and perhaps a cheater bar would be useful,as it's rather difficult to get in there. Or maybe accessing from the bottom, but there isn't much space.
Finally, the Sentra is a subcompact. There just isn't much space. I had to remove a couple other bolts just to get it out.
So in the end, it probably only took me about 6 hours to do a job that would probably take a mechanic 30-60 minutes to do.
Does your new alternator come with new nuts and bolts??? Just in case????

The bottom alternator bolt is just spinning when I try to take It out. how can I make it stop spinning, that's the only thing holding me back from removing the alternator
Easier to put top bolt in few threads then dangle bottom until bolt slips in. Much easier
I just did this and when I went to put the negative terminal back it sparked and a fused popped on the positive terminal?!?!

Why won’t the bottom bolt come out? Not even with my impact is loosing it
my alternator is way gone. I will be replacing it soon. Hopefully this will save me around $300 in labor.

That same car and that same job will take a lot longer if you have the V6 trim

It's a bit more difficult to do in the sentra, spaces are tighter.
I followed fuse box on 2006 the metal part I had to put 🔨 down.😅
