I got hooked on Hank Williams when I was 12 years old. 35 years later and I still get chills every time I hear him sing. I love all music, from the Beatles and Hendrix to Robert Johnson and B.B. King. Hank Williams is at the very center of my love for music. The best there’s ever been.
How fantastic that these recordings exist. I was lucky to see Roy Acuff at the Opry in 1989. On the same show were Hank Snow, Roy Clark, Skeeter Davis and many more.
This music was great... But I prefer the sixties with The Beatles and Pink Floyd. Anyway, Hank Williams influenced greatly those 60's artists. John Lennon greatly respected Hanks William and Édith Piaf.
Hank knew he wasn’t long for this world however he did see the light of salvation and it’s evident in this song. At 29 in the backseat of a Cadillac (baby blue) Hanks way of life caught up to him. I believe he was put here for a reason to influence country music and give us generations of a multi talented family but when “he saw the light.” He knew it was time to go. One can only imagine what was going through Hanks mind in that drive and what did Hank say when he met his lord and savior? The Opry needs to fix this man’s reputation there and let him RIP. Hank wrote several gospel songs under his pen name of Luke the Drifter; Hank wrote & recorded over 100 songs in his short life; he was only 29 when he died January 1st 1952.
Intense drinking and drug use, which he was known for, will do that to you. On top of being a different time for maturity. At least he found the Lord before he went to sleep.
