  • He was born on December 3, 1925 on a farm that was located equally close to Flat River, Hickory Grove and Cantwell, Missouri, just about 75 miles from St. Louis. As a young boy he wanted to become a singer and make records, maybe even appearing on the Grand Ole Opry. There is a story that says he (or his father) traded a hen with a neighbor in exchange for a guitar. The deal was cancelled, however, when the hen failed to lay any eggs! Nevertheless, he did learn to play guitar, doing so locally at church functions and amateur competitions.
These dreams, however, had to wait until after he served his country in World War II. After serving five years in the Merchant Marines, Ferlin returned home in 1947 to Missouri where he went to work with Smiley Burnette on St. Louis radio station KXLW. Eventually, he ended up in Salinas, California, performing with local performer/radio personality Big Jim DeNoone.
Ferlin Husky's first recordings were done for Bill McCall's Four Star Records. Under the name "Terry Preston," he recorded his first single, "Remembrance of Franklin D/Ozark Waltz". Eight more singles were to follow on this label. In 1951, he was added to the cast of Cliffie Stone's TV program "Hometown Jamboree," replacing Tennessee Ernie Ford. Stone was so impressed by Ferlin's talent that he brought him to Capitol Records in 1952. Five songs were released, including "Undesired" and "Gone". None of these songs were hits. Ferlin's father and his producer, Ken Nelson, did not like his choice of the name of "Terry Preston." They didn't feel that it was very masculine and that it was unfitting for a country music singer. Therefore, he returned to his given name, using the spelling "Huskey" until 1957.
Despite the change, he had no real success until 1953, when he teamed up with a young Bakersfield singer named Jean Shepard. Their first hit was "A Dear John Letter", which was about a soldier who was jilted by his girlfriend. Since the Korean War ended in the summer of that year, it was no surprise that their song was Number One in the country charts for six weeks and reached Number Four in the pop charts. The pair's follow-up, "Forgive Me John", also made it to the Top Ten, thus launching both of their careers. The next big hit for Husky was "I Feel Better All Over (More Than Anywhere Else)", which reached Number Six. The flip-side, "Little Tom", also made it into the Top Ten.
In order to compete with the success of Rock and Roll, Ken Nelson made the decision to re-record "Gone" with the Nashville Sound. He removed the steel guitar and the fiddle, replacing them with a modest rhythm section and the background voices of Millie Kirkham and the Jordanaires. The change was so extreme that even some disc jockeys refused to play the song. However, by 1957, "Gone" reached Number One on the country charts, and held that position for ten weeks. It also made it to Number Four on the pop charts, becoming a true "crossover" success. Some have even called it the first hit song with the Nashville Sound. The trend continued with the release of Jim Reeves "Four Walls" later the same year.
The next Number One hit for Ferlin was the Gospel song "Wings of a Dove". It stayed ten weeks at Number One in 1960. He had few minor hits in the early sixties, with "Once" reaching Number Four in 1967, and "Just For You" doing the same the following year. This was his last Top Ten record on the Capitol label.
In 1973, Ferlin left Capitol and signed with ABC Records. His only major hit with ABC was "Rosie Cries A Lot", which was in the Top 20 in 1973. He continued performing on the road well into the 1980's. His only down time was in 1977 when he had open heart surgery.
In 1984, Ferlin was signed by MCA who released a video of his called Truck Drivin' Son of a Gun." He then began to build the Wings of a Dove Museum in Hendersonville, Tennessee, which soon became part of Conway Twitty's Twitty City. In 1988, he gave up drinking and started singing inspirational music. ~From a Ferlin Husky Fan-Dedicated Website.

Thank you to my Great-Grandma & Great-Grandpa that raised me on the extremely old-school songs like this.
I'm not going to lie, as a kid you hate listening to it because it's just old and you think it's lame.. but as you get older, and those people pass away.. you think of all the good memories you had with them, and the songs they listened to... this is one.
I'd give anything to listen to this song with them back when I was a little boy.

The day after my husband of 37 years passed away a dove came to my home...it has been almost 4 years now. That dove still comes to my back porch every morning and every evening. I know this is his spirit since I had not had a dove in my yard until that time.

What a beautiful comfort from the Lord!
The gospel is that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day (1 Cor 15:1-4). The moment you believe the gospel you are saved, forever sealed by the Holy Spirit, and made a new creature in Christ. God bless whoever reads this!

This song tells it like it is. My son had a troubled life, and fell in with bad company before he passed away. I played this song at his celebration of life and released large white helium balloons at the same time. I believe this song that the lord does send his love to him and forgives him. I'm only 30 and no one in my family ever played any oldies for me, so I had to do my own digging for gems like this one. While I'm not a fan of current country music, oldie country is just wonderful.
Plus musicians of old seem to have more individual personality offstage!
RIP Ferlin Husky - glad you had a nice, long life and weren't taken from us early - this tune is a perfect sendoff. :)

Pursuant to Ken Burns' latest masterpiece, COUNTRY MUSIC: "On the Wings of a Dove" (circa early 60's)
: “Who sang that one?” asked my wife a moment ago. “Ask your phone!”
I'd been singing some words to a song I hadn't even thought about, let alone heard on radio in 50 years. And I suddenly realized: this trickle of memories that's becoming a flood, is due to watching Ken Burns' Country Music. It's like what happens when you go back to visit the haunts of your youth - and finding yourself overcome with memories you thought were lost. So too, tuning in to “PBS at 8-Eastern / 7-Central” is having that same effect. It's a nice feeling, isn't it.
It was actually a good strong melody I'd been humming, in three-quarter-time (which would have been rare for Country songs in the early 60s. The only waltz (the one about "Tennessee") wasn't considered 'Country' (think Patty Page). So. Ask the cell phone; a lovely young woman's voice declares, with authority: “Ferlin Husky.”
I'd been remembering the song's opening bars -- the part that goes, “On the wings of a snow white dove / He sent his pure clear love / a sign from above … ”
I really will take it as a sign from above if Ferlin gets a reference in the next episode!
Search for it this day and the very first offering at UA-cam is a black & white television video titled “Ferlin Husky - Wings of a Dove (Grand Ole Opry)” - hang around to hear what I declare, the lowest note ever sung in the history of the Opry. (Ferlin's range extended effortlessly into bass-baritone.
You're looking for the version with nearly three million views [ ! ] published in 2010 with this informed note:
He was born on December 3, 1925 on a farm that was located equally close to Flat River, Hickory Grove and Cantwell, Missouri, just about 75 miles from St. Louis. As a young boy he wanted to become a singer and make records, maybe even appearing on the Grand Ole Opry. There is a story that he (or his father) traded a hen with a neighbor, in exchange for a guitar. The deal was canceled, however, when the hen failed to lay any eggs . . .

Thanks for the history. Love Ferlin's voice, humor, facial expressions. I woke up one morning with Snow White Dove going through my head. Still wonder when I first heard it. I was born in 1942.

The amazing talent of Ferlin Husky was truly a blessing from God. Ferlin used that blessing to bring joy to this world. I didn't know he worked with the greatest cowboy side kick of all time Smiley Burnette, also one of my favorites. Thank you so much for this John.

My boyfriend the hill billy loves classic country music and I saw the wings of a dove video on the classic country tv channel he watches. I thought something was interesting about his face. I wanted to know more about this handsome man so that’s why I’m here. I like classic rock but this man of mine has me exploring classic country lol. We are in our 30’s and love all classics.

Wow just heard that Ferlin passed away. His songs remind me so much of a cool time cruising down the road with my dad listening to 8-tracks. He would patiently listen as I tried to sing like Johnny, Buck, Merle, and Ferlin. Such good memories. Thanks for posting this.

I love country music... I mostly listen to the new artists, but these classic singers are the backbone of country music and why it's so popular today. It's just wonderful to hear this song and hear and hear it done so marvelously...
    Thank you for the upload...
