The irony of this episode is that Robert is pretending to be a good moral man in the game but he’s not despite the constant reminders around him of what he’s supposed to be. The people in the real world seem to be assholes at first glance because they treat him poorly but in the game they never once turned on each other even when they’re being tortured, two of them sacrifice they're lives for the rest, they’re unintentionally showing him what he should be acting like,
This was the first and only episode of Black Mirror I ever watched; we watched it during my Cinematography class. I was genuinely on the edge of my seat the whole time!
Underrated episode. Really brought back the original ethos of BM before Netflix. It’s not just “technology bad”, but rather its “how can technology be used by bad people and what does that say about our society”.
Cristin Milioti and Billy Magnusson (Valdak in this show) later starred together in the dark sci-fi comedy series Made For Love, which has similar elements as USS Callister. Magnusson plays a tech billionaire who asserts total control over his wife (Milioti) who is forced to fain adoration for him.
I can't lie. I secretly want to push for more compassion in the world through these stories. Reading this comment makes me feel like it is working. Thank you!
Great analysis. This is the first episode of Black Mirror I watched, and it is packed with meaning and symbolism. You identify the themes and psychoanalysis well. Thanks
Great vid! I have mixed feeling about USS Callister; the story is wonderful, but the way the tech relies on DNA messes with my suspension of disbelief.
*Great video!! As always. So happy that you popped up in my youtube reccomended!!* May i ask a question, what is the name of the song used in the beginning of the video please? The song linked in the description is a different song used later on in the vid. Id truly appreciate it. :) thank youu!! - a new, happy sub
No worries. Glad you enjoyed the videos! The one tagged in the description is linked for copyright reasons, but the others are all from the YT audio library. The first track is called "Escapism" by Yung Logos.
No offense but this was a very poor psychological description of the character Daly. He's not outright evil and the show puts alot of effort into showing his progression into an unempathetic human mostly towards those who bully him irl. He also did not put the protagonist in his simulation only until she was pressured into hazing him and thinking less of him by the other coworkers. He's not outright evil, and the superiority complex is not the way it was depicted in the video. It was a result of years of bullying from his colleagues. The show put too much effort to show that progression through these small details for them to go unnoticed.
"Once, Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering about, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know that he was Zhuang Zhou. [...] Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuang Zhou. But he didn't know if he was Zhuang Zhou who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that he was Zhuang Zhou." - Zhuangzi, chapter 2 (Edit: 3rd century BC)
How does a genius programmer be skilled enough to remove a penis; but fails to remove their ability to text and/or call the real world? There are too many plot holes in this show that I couldn't take it serious. I checked out when the Mary Sue character magically became smarter at programing a game she didn't even create. At some point, the genius programmer should have enslaved himself (his clone) to do all of his work for him. This would have made it possible for him to have a better life (away from the bullies at his work).
lol! Literally the first person I thought of when I was writing that line. I had a visual gag lined up for our boy Elon riding a bluebird, but I ran out of time. I'm sure the opportunity will present itself again.

Rendall! I've seen Milioti in a few things over the past few years and she never disappoints. She seems to have an affinity for comedy and scifi work.
Massively underrated show!! I think I wasn’t expecting it to be so truly funny. It’s a great premise and executed well. Awesome cast. I want more :)
One of my favourite Black Mirror episodes! Great review/analysis!
Thanks, Moxie. I'm looking forward to checking out your latest!
Nautilus Files covering the Meth Damon episode of Black Mirror? Just what I needed after a rough week
Hey, duko! Glad to hear it helped. And these Plemons nicknames are killing me😂
Your videos make me feel loved for some reason.
I can't lie. I secretly want to push for more compassion in the world through these stories. Reading this comment makes me feel like it is working. Thank you!
I think theres a little Robert Daly in all of us and this episode helps me to keep that little part of myself in check
Another Great vid. Take notes creators, this is how you do it.
Thanks, Sam!

I can't wait for your analysis on the new season episodes!
Thanks, Sara! A little more than a week from release. I can't wait to get started!
Same.
Always loved your vids but really like the background house music too.
Great analysis, thank you. So glad I found you.
I love this episode!!! It got me into the show
I literally just re watched this episode today right before I saw this video.
A friend of mine refers to Mr. Plemons as "Gingi Damons"...
I see it, but never thought about it until he bought it to my attention.
"Gingi Damons" 😂😂
Love it as usual! All your videos and especially your editing skills are gold! 💛
Thanks for the love, Eva! Always good to see you :)
That outro track bangs!
Great vid!

Love your content. Especially after a b rip! : )
Whot a grate episode
The wormhole scene was identical to that of the black hole scene from the 2009 Star Trek film.
Totally thought that was Matt Damon until I watched your video.
Like your phyc analysis

Yes jessy OG pinkman at the end bitches
thought that was him
Digital Nannette would be the Innie right?
Not really either because it's a completely separate entity which never re-merges with the other one.
@Dayvit78 Well, yes, but she was compared to an Outy in the video.

USS Callister is the prettiest & most fun Black Mirror & I love it. Jesse Plemons looks nothing like Damon. Happy ending of sorts
totally agree I cant see the resemblance at all they look totally different.
Somehow, this episode felt like it inspired Severance.
Plemons is Matt Damon with Downs.
He is Meth Damon 😂😂😂
It seems like the game Infinity is based off of the real life ever-expanding starship game Star Citizen
He totally does look like Matt Damon!
Kirsten Dunst on the set as an extra… or a director??? 🤯
Jesse plemons fiancee
More like Matt Damon, if he got stung by a bee
cool

F this episode.
Love your work, but can you please not abbreviate words needlessly.
So, how do we get Elon into one of those things? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
