  • Description: SPOILERS BELOW
    Brace yourselves for an unforgettable journey into the depths of Black Mirror's "Beyond the Sea," a haunting episode set in an alternate 1969. In this gripping 80-minute space saga, two astronauts find themselves on a perilous mission, but with a unique twist. They can live their lives on Earth through robot doppelgangers controlled by them, allowing them to be with their loved ones from light-years away.
    However, tragedy strikes, pushing the boundaries of this groundbreaking technology to its limits. As we follow the story of Hartnett's astronaut, David, a horrifying event shatters his world. In the dead of night, a Manson Family-like cult invades his home, mercilessly killing David's wife and children in front of his replica's eyes before obliterating his robotic surrogate. This chilling scene, reminiscent of the infamous Sharon Tate murder, raises questions about the ethical implications of tampering with nature.
    The unimaginable tragedy brings forth unforeseen complications. With David's replica destroyed and no other like it, he remains stranded in space without a link to Earth for four more years. Amidst this bleak existence, Mara's character, Lana, the wife of Paul's distant astronaut Cliff, offers a glimmer of hope. David borrows Cliff's link, leading to a complex love triangle that unravels amidst the stars. However, as rejection takes its toll, David succumbs to a vengeful decision, stealing Cliff's replica and descending to Earth for a brutal act of revenge against Lana and her son, mirroring the tragic fate he himself experienced.
    In this emotionally charged episode, creator and writer Charlie Brooker once again explores the potential pitfalls of emerging technologies. As he has consistently emphasized, "Beyond the Sea" serves as a cautionary tale, delving into the depths of human flaws and the destructive decisions we may make when faced with profound scientific advancements.
    Join us as we dissect the intricacies of "Beyond the Sea" and explore the dark undercurrents that propel this Black Mirror masterpiece towards its grim and unforgettable conclusion.

    So peep this ! In the beginning when the first dudes family got killed they were painting on the walls with the blood and when cliff comes back at the end it’s all the blood smeared on the walls! So my idea is that the first dude actually wanted to go back to apologize but came back to see the family slaughtered held them cried and came back couldn’t even look Cliff in the eyes so when he came back he’s like yeah now you know how I feel you piece of shyt sit down cause we all we got now. I wands say Cliff said he had cameras but I may be overthinking that part

    Thanks for sticking up for Cliff & Lana's son. I felt so sorry for him when I thought about him trying to navigate all this messy confusing adult nonsense. Lana seemed like a loving mother but Cliff (and David) were so vile to him

      As a kid who grew up in a strict household, I immediately understood the kid's behavior. I love the fact that he fought back the only way he knew how to in the paint smearing scene.

    The last scene when he kicks the chair over to him had me dying. 😂 Even just the look he gave him like. "See, now you get it!" Terrifying and hilarious at the same time. Also The Entire History Of You is my all time all time favorite episode of Black Mirror as well. The only runner ups would be The National Anthem, White Christmas, White Bear, Shut Up and Dance, Loch Henry, San Junipero, and Black Museum. Honestly, there are too many fantastic stories in this show, but The Entire History Of You never fails to break my heart and if a story can touch you so deeply it hurts. You know it's doing something right.

    This was definitely my favorite of the season, with Joan is Awful coming in right behind. Loch Henry was pretty good, too. I'm not sure how I feel about the supernatural elements of the other two episodes, but I'm glad to hear you're gonna cover this season!

      Hey, Dudeist! I just watched Joan is Awful and I agree; it's pretty close to being the best of the bunch. A lot of people seem to feel the same way. I haven't watched Loch Ness or Demon 79 yet, so I'm curious to see if I have a similar reaction.

      Yeah, it's a lot like White Christmas in that regard. I like it because it kind of says that we're all equally capable of being ghouls to each other if we're not careful.

    Since I finished watching the episode I've been watching lots of recaps to get the stuff I didn't got or didn't put importance in the episode. By a mile yours is the best, you pointed out stuff that nobody talked about and made the best observations. Your channel should be seen by more people. Keep up the good work dude.

    Great job. Even just a recap from NF is fun to watch. I think the van was ominous in retrospect. Even though the colors were cheerful, the dirty sheets covering the windows was kind of scary.

      Thanks, Rendall! Yeah, I think we're going to find out that her current day life is just as desperate and complicated as the rest. Something about the way she looks at Lottie when she sees her for the first time at the compound struck me as unusual, like it reawakened the old Van from her youth.

      Good to see you, Hugh! I've watched the first season and I thought it was pretty good! I would like to cover it, if there is interest but it would definitely have to be in pod format like this video. I normally take about 20-25 hours to make the heavily edited videos, so it limits how much I can put out in a given window.

    Ep 2 was the best to me. This season wasn't that technology oriented except maybe this ep. 3. which had it's pros and cons for me, but all in all a solid season. Should we expect a video for all episodes or is this just one you picked?

      Hey Doris! Of the 3 I've seen; this one is still my favorite. They definitely went for a more cinematic feel with this season. I will cover all 5 of them in this format and maybe later do the usual deep character study, but I want to see them all before I decide. This type of video is far less intensive to edit, so I can turn these around quickly.

    The notification for this vid got me to watch the season this week lol. Tbh idk how to feel about the season? It wasn't bad necessarily, but all the episodes were a bit slow to start (but at the same time kinda worked for the most part), the twists were good tho. But idk, it didn't really feel as Black Mirror-like? But they were entertaining for sure.

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +1

      They went for a cinematic approach, across the board, this time. Much more of a slow burn, which can be good or bad depending on the story. I think that's why the response has been that season 6 is an overall mixed bag.

    I have to disagree with your thinking David’s motivations & intentions are premeditated. The beginning scenes show us how the men are polar opposites in nature. David is warm and opening, Cliff is rigid and insensitive. Cliff’s replica is David’s lifeline to Earth (the lowly caterpillar symbolic of real Life). When Cliff cuts that lifeline, David is devastated. “I have NOTHING. You have everything and don’t appreciate what you’ve got!” Back to beginning scenes. David’s life is wonderful. He has a loving wife and he enjoys pleasing her even though he can’t enjoy sex with her. He is affectionate with his kids. He is open and accommodating to the couple who marvel at him. Now look at Cliff. He is emotionally distant from Lara and Henry. He is authoritative. As Lara tells him, YOU are why we’re here, I had no say. Spear fishing with Henry shows him again trying to be macho man like he was when he apologized for being bad at chopping logs. Cut to the chase. Lara is open to David and even responds to him emotionally. Remember that David is the loving warm-hearted guy. He enjoys being with Lara bcuz it’s how he felt with his own wife. When Lara rejects his more intimate moves because her feelings are conflicted, he’s crest-fallen. Remember how he was drawing his kids and wife, hanging sketches of them in his cabin. Drawing Lara is, as he says, fantasizing. The sketches before Cliff sees the ones of Lara are memories of the loves he’s lost. But Cliff won’t buy that, just as he wouldn’t buy Lara’s explanation of why she felt what she did with David. Cliff is a hothead. His behavior throughout the episode is controlling. When Cliff blows his top with David about the drawings, he lies to him. Rubs salt in the wound. Now we come to David’s motivation. I have nothing (again) so you should have nothing. It’s interesting to me that the first time we see Cliff being emotional is when he returns to the ship crying. David’s kicking the chair out for him makes the point: Now you know what it feels like. You too have nothing now. I find David’s character the more sympathetic one. His revenge is understandable. And this is Charlie Brooker! IMO this episode is his most complex one and not in his usual wheelhouse. Brooker says he wrote it during lockdown and that deprivation of contact with the outside world was his inspiration. There are a couple of interviews where he, the director, the producer, Mara and Hartnett have an interesting Q&A session. (Paul was working elsewhere at the time.)

    Lana is selfish for not telling her Husband that David grab her breast but told him about the song getting hit. Maybe her husband would have taken action and stop if things before she got killed. So she brought it onto her self for withholding information. I don’t feel bad for her crocodile tears and playing victim just cause of her emotions.

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +6

      To each, his own. Personally, I don't believe in the idea that my actions are anyone else's responsibility but my own, regardless of the circumstance. So, I don't blame Lana for her own death; David made the decision to murder. That falls solely on him. Perhaps Lana could have been more honest, but to say that her death is her fault because she didn't report an unwanted pass is kinda wild to me.

    • @ollie2111
      @ollie2111 Рік тому +1

      @@nautilusfileseah, plus on rewatch (just watched this episode again cause my relative fell asleep while we were watching the season together initially lol) the last conversation Cliff has with David where he lies a ton about everything Lana says probably factored a lot into him murdering her and the son (tho I guess we don't know for sure, you could headcanon he ran away maybe). I mean, maybe he really was going to apologize or maybe he was going to do something else awful, maybe he was going to murder them either way, but with that last conversation that pisses him off, Cliff said Lana said all this stuff that she didn't say, just so he could make his relationship & himself sound less pathetic, but unfortunately that riled David up even more than he mightve been. I just thought that was interesting cause his last thoughts of them before comminitting the murder(s) was a bunch of lies from the husband. If you -@ the main commenter- wanna say her not being honest factored into her being a victim (weird take but okay) Cliff also lied a lot, and Lana couldn't have done anything to affect that.
