The Swinging Blue Jeans - You're No Good

- The Swinging Blue Jeans was a quartet founded by Ray Ennis and Les Braid in Liverpool in 1958 and that achieved success with the "British Invasion" of North America that revolutionized pop music in 1964. The Blue Jeans, was a part of the "Merseybeat" sound that gave the world The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Cilla Black. Like other Merseybeat bands, The Swinging Blue Jeans featured two guitars, bass and drums. It essentially was a rock n' roll band influenced by country & western music, the early, country-influenced rock n' roll (a sound now called "rock-a-billy") and the local Liverpudlian "skiffle" sound, northern English 20th-century folk music influenced by the blues and jazz, played by bands using improvised instruments to complement the acoustic guitar and banjo.
The Swinging Blue Jeans' most famous song was "Hippy Hippy Shake", which was a smash hit, reaching #2 in the British charts after being released by EMI's prestigious HMV label in 1964. "Hippy Hippy Shake" was released in the U.S. on Imperial Records and in Canada by Capitol, The Beatles' North American label. The group's popularity peaked from 1964 through 1966, along with that of the other Merseybeat bands. The Merseybeat sound suddenly became old-fashioned with the rise of psychedelia in 1967, which saw the beat-driven rock n' roll replaced by the acid-fueled musical phenomenon that became known simply as "Rock". (The Beatles managed to enjoy another three-year cycle of success from 1967 through 1969, after which the band broke up). Now obsolete, the band no longer had any hits and eventually was forced onto the "oldies" circuit. The Swinging Blue Jeans continue to tour to this day. ~IMDb Mini Biography By: Jon C. Hopwood

My grandad ( John Lawrence) was actually in this band he was the drummer
My great uncle was also in this band too!
I am 40 but love them
I always really liked this song! I was just thinking about performing it. It’s probably gonna happen.
Did any of you guys who relative was in the band, here any stories of Little Richard taking them on tour and/or having any influence over their music?
Did he go by John Ryan? He was drummer from 1980‐83.
The great happiness of the 1960s! That will never come back.
I'm thinking great hippy hippy shake !
In my opinion the Beatles are the best band ever. Here's another great band to come out of Liverpool. And my fav song from them. 😁
Spice girls Zig r zig r
I agree I always loved this band
This version of this song is extraordinary!
Brian epstein and the brainwashed marketing make us think like that, before epstein they were nothing special ,they were just lucky enough, they were better bands than them
Nobody can beat their Hippy shake 😂❤
I was 14 yrs old loved our music of the sixties it never fades and brings amazing memories for many who still listen 2023
I was 14 in 1964 and will always love the music of the 60s. Always takes me back to what I was doing at the time whenever I hear one of the songs.
I miss you so much 60s, it was a great time for sure!
If ever there was a time to do what we all said we would, its NOW. While there is still a little of the that old world leaved -somewhere other than in our hearts.
@@GerardVaughan-qe7ml I think I've done all I wanted to do by NOW, so no issues there really. Having said that though, it's always nice to reminisce back to the 60s. It was a completely different way of life compared to now, with so many happy and not so happy memories of the time. All so obvious I know, but not to be forgotten. The music was GREAT as well, and for that alone the 60s wont be forgotten!

The village where we lived as a family had a motor garage run by this great mechanic by the name of Lez Noviss. Two employees, Chaz, and Dave ( as it happened, but not the "Band", although very music !)
He was a great help to me as teenager with motor cycles, and after all those years I find myself in a comparable position to his, with my neighbours over the road, and their bikes, as was, and now motor scooters. Main difference is that I was a very useful mechanic nyself, where these guys have about as much clue as, say, a Rabbit ? Heres example. He comes along with a cracked, heavily rusted front wheel "suspension". Not "Forks", but a single sided thing. Being a bit disinterested, I I didn't put any effort into other than welding up the cracks - took about an hour - and off he went. Next day its cracked again !?
Nope, not my welding, I discover that the "swinging arm" - with front wheel on the end - has not "swung" for years, since it is rusted completely solid !! There is NO SPRING UNIT FITTED !! It is rusted in the Down - compressed- position.
You would not believe what he suggested we do. He wanted to hack the Suspension Spring unit shorter so that it would go between the bolt holes either end. Can you believe that ?!
As a friend of mine once told me-they just don’t make nostalgia the way they used to.
The best version of them all
WRONG linda ronstadt and ten times hotter
Dee Dee Warwick was the first and her original is the coolest !!!
Listen guys, You may think it's the best version its all about opinions..
Bullshit!!!
this and Betty's Everett are the best!!!!

Another cool song
Great song great band
I bought this on its release, Smiths, Bognor. When I was later told it was a copy of a Betty Everett song. It changed my life, never bought a pop record again.
This was the first record I ever bought!
Удивительная группа...Жаль мало материла оставила!😢😎🔥
The Swinging Blue Jeans ! Fk I couldn't think who originated this marvellous old song. Playing in 1963/4? in The Conservative Club, in Wantage - (before it became Oxon).
Hello to Sally Ellis if by some lottery chance she should be here.
The other record they had was, "House of The Rising Sun". What a blast !!

Hahahaha! A scene from the infamous Greek comedy of the 1960s "The countess of the factory"! A very funny scene indeed, in where we can also hear these golden oldy, here!
Thanks! Was wondering where this film clip came from.
@@ndogg20 Yes...It's from that old Greek comedy that is dealing with the loving affair between this girl (.... you can see in the scene) and the guy next to her. But.... there's a catch....He....is a very strict police officer of that era.....fanatic anti-communist, who nonetheless, has to endure his brothers who are anything but what he represents or believes! The one of them, is an avid pro - communist, and the other one, is a.... common thief! To make matters worst, even his own mother is also an avid worker's activist, and fanatic anti - misgovernment fighter! In the midst of all these, he's falling in love, with this girl, who's posing as a poor, everyday Greek teen, of the '60s! Despite his confrontations and headaches, with his own folks, he manage however, to convince his own mother, to take the girl, to work in the same factory, where she works (A textile factory). Soon, everybody there, realizes, that there's something weird about this girl....she doesn't appear to be, who she claims to be! She always getting late for work....she finds it difficult to cope up, with hard manual labor, and she's constantly taking care of her appearance and her finger nails....thus receiving the mocking nick name "Countess of the factory" from all the rest! Meanwhile, her romance, is continuing with the police officer, and one night they decide to go for a night outing, and eventually they end up, in one of the endless "Ye - Ye" rock n' roll night clubs of Athens, in where they come across with a whole bunch of crazy "Ye - Ye" boys and girls dancing, in the rhythms, of Swinging Blue Jeans, and their big hit back then "You're no good"! The whole spectacle of these crazy youngsters, is too much for the otherwise conservative police officer, who immediately, grab her by the hand, and run away from there, to another ... more quiet and "civilized" environment! At the end of the movie, it turns out that the "Countess of the factory" is indeed a "Countess" since she happens to be, the daughter of a very prominent Greek entrepreneur, and therefore, a very rich girl, who was pretended to be poor, in order to be able to approach her beloved police officer, without embarrassing him! They eventually getting married, and as a result, the rest of his family members, turn overnight, from thieves, pro - communists, and union fighters, to..... avid capitalists!..... Got it now?! A very good movie; full of smart dialogues and an excellent cast!
"Wow", remember seeing them live in 1964 in Salisbury. A million years ago.
Congrats on sticking around all these years!
Brilliant track/video showcasing the best of British Invasion and the group. Have their original U.S. Lp release.
Excellent, and excellent sound in this posting, too...! 🕵🏻🎶😃🔥👍👍👍
I loved this song the first I heard it in 1964. I also enjoyed Linda Rondstadt's version in 75.
lucky you , who lived this!! If i ever envy someone is your generation...
Wow this is pretty damn good.

The members of this band must have been blown away with Van Halen's rendition of their song. Until now I didn't even know it wasn't an original VH song!
Groovy man. I dig it
I thought this was a joke, but this was a serious band.

Too bad this wasn't a US hit (reached #97) but 45s of this are common and I had no problem finding one. Betty Everett came out with hers in Nov, 1963 and reached #51. Both great versions.
You no good" is that in British language ??? Or there is a flap in between ???
I am always amazed when I hear this song - just about as good as you can get. Their version is actually better than the Beatles "cover".
When did The Beatles do this song?
@@glennmason9949They didn’t

Hahaha! Clip from the old Greek classic comedy of the "60s..."The factory countess"! All the "YE-YE" boys (as they used to call these youngsters back then here in Greece) are going crazy in the sounds of swinging blue jeans!

Thanks for uploading this, but I have to disagree about the Merseybeat bands. They still sound great to this day. In fact when you go back to some of the so called "psychedelic" music a lot of that sounds dire(unless you mean Jimi Hendrix and perhaps bands like the Herd) but Groups like the Swinging Blue jeans still sound great. Another great cover they did was "Don't Make Me Over" (a Bacharach/David song) also recorded by the great vocalist Dionne Warwick)and for most of us the Merseysound never ended; it has just been missed as we lost so many of the great groups.
Yeah, when 1967 came around with the summer of love bullshit a lot of Merseybeat bands that didn't play psychedelic music were thrown into the oldies circuit like the Swinging Blue Jeans, Freddie And The Dreamers, and The Honeycombs just to name a few. And psychedelia didn't even last that long either.

I've loved this track since it came out ( like any normal person ............ ) but I have to mention one way in which it is definitely inferior : - The guys do the vocals proud, and you couldn't ask for more. The guitar solo is another matter. This solo is based on the original, but has one crucial difference . Dee Dee Warwick ( sister of ... ) cut the original, and she did her own backing vocals on it. The vocals that Dee Dee throws behind the guitar solo are well worth the price of admission. Check it if you don't believe it !
