I'm 52 and remember 33 years ago it was one of the songs highlighted on one of those infomecials at 1:00 am selling 1960s albums and I liked this song, and I remember when I was getting ready to go to bed when the sun came up after watching hours of those infomericals because thats all there was in 1991, I couldn't remember the name of the song, so when I went up to bed and my father was rolling out of his bed and I said Dad do you know a band called Status Quo? Do you know their song? He then rubbed his groggy head and said...Pictures of Matchstick Men. A few days later I went down to an old sawdust on the floor record store 20 miles away and bought the 45 single.

me too...best time of my life .. sixties and seventies... the beginning of the evil plans they constructed already since end of WWII began as they changed into the eighties.
Dam, fecking hell, the same year I was born ,! & this is one of the first song I ever hear from the Quo, when I 1st heard in the 70s,! Born 23rd May 1968, from northern Ireland UK, 🤝🇬🇧
Born 1952, so I was 16 when this came out and still love it. Loved the 1960's, 1970's, and even some 1980's music ! After that I easily forget about the music and living in the UK as well ! 😃😎 I had just passed my motorcycle test as well, so enjoyed riding around on my 1959 BSA Bantam. Happy Days !
Status Quo were a LOT bigger in Great Britain than they were in the USA. They had a long career in GB. This was probably their biggest hit song in the USA.
In 1968 I was a freshman in college, wore bell bottom jeans, love beads, a fringed vest (which I still have) and rose colored glasses - the kind John Lennon wore. It was the "make love - not war" and "tune in -turn on, drop out" era. What a great time that was.....
Just figured out the main riff on harmonica...been jamming on it for like, an hour now. Dang! Can't believe I only heard of this band until a month ago! hahaha 🎶🎵🎼 Wow, you British blokes sure made / make some amazing music! Just another one of nyour gifts to the world. :) -from Canada

A major song from my youth! I didn't know that this band went on to be a huge act in England. Sadly their music didn't make it to the USA. Caroline is another great song by them.
Remember this song and of course all the others playing in Eastern Europe in the 1960s, we could hear it on Radio Luxembourg (AM station) and Radio Free Europe (shortwave station), among others. Technology was way more advanced back then, too. Picture and sound was always in perfect lip-snc. Wait a minute -- there was no picture.... My bad.
Great blast from the past. Takes me back to... yes, a Golden Era in London life. Before yellow lines, cycle lanes, ULEZ, street crime, disrespect and cultural enrichment.
Pushing 75 y.o. here. The song reached number seven on the British charts, number eight in Canada, and number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming their only top-40 single in the United States.[5][6][7]. Released January 5, 1968
@@alanstrom2221 Yes, Wiki, indicates #14 in Australia. The uniqueness of this song is the very early used of flanging, or phasing, of the guitar effect.
I found this tune from watching the episode of Cold Case, 'Forever Blue' GREAT episode! Powerful message of why people must kill and destroy people that happen to be different. Some folks cannot handle the truth.
I am 73 and like this song as much as ever since first hearing it in 1968.
same here i am 73 always loved it

The Psychedelic Era I lived through it and loved every minute of it.
This is the best that the Quo did, but each to their own.

Best use of the harmonized bass guitar in history.
First visuals for me. First heard this during my military training in South Africa, 1968. Now 75 and fading. 🙁
Wow, so exciting, military training in South Africa, bet you looked sexy in a uniform. Best regards, keep living
What makes this song so special? It is melancholic, but it is not sad: it is joyful melancholy!

Back when this came out, I thought it was about Plastic man. One of the comic book super heros at the time.
Coworker was thrilled to hear this on radio, summer 1968. So I enjoyed it as well.
This is amazing footage, even before my time and I'm 65!!🏴❤️😃😁🤭🤩
