I used to be very meticulous about grip weight when building a set but have since decided that grip weight isn't that big of a factor because the weight is in your hands. For example, does wearing a ring or watch affect your swing speed or sequence? I tried using a strip of lead tape (approx 8 grams = 2 swing weight points) and held it in my hands against the grip and made a bunch of shots. For me, it didn't make a difference. Since then I just build my clubs without grips to E-1 (ends up being D-2 with a 50g grip) and I just get whatever grip I want.
Thanks! I've got the TM Mini BRNR (~D3 S. weight). I cut shafts for the AI Smoke, SW's C6.6 (S65 shaft), C4.5 (S55 Shaft)...I'd like to bring them into D. I'll check grips (I think I can go lighter) & lead tape. Recommendations? As I already epoxied the cogs on. I did buy tip weights. Should've used them, I guess.
I have Mizuno JPX 921 irons. They have Recoil ESX 460|F2 graphite shafts. They are between C9 - D0 swing-weight. I often swing them outside of ball and get hosel shots. Would a D1 or D2 swing-weight help this problem? I am 75 and have about a 60 - 65 club-speed with my 7 iron.
Thank you so very much for the knowledge! I have extended my irons by 1.25 inches, and the swing weight increased between E2-E-5:-(! It's impossible for me to swing... What is the best way to get the swing weight to D1? Can I wrap some lead tape below the grip to balance it? Thank you!
RB, you didn't explicitly go there, but I would assume that 5 grams at the grip end is much less critical than 5 grams at the head end, since it is further from the balance point. Is that the case?
Thank You. Maybe you are the the first ClubFitter who accepts its possible for someone (me) to swing faster with a heavier swing weight. Too many Club Fitters quickly dismiss Heavier swing weights will automatically produce a slower swing/ballspeed. No it doesn't not for for everyone. Some feel more confident they can swing faster and also get a more accurate dispersion pattern.
if I may ask how do you know what the right swing weight is for a set of clubs? is it dettermined by the set itself or the golfer? Lts say you were building a set for a customer where do you personally begin when it comes to swing weight?
It is a process started with some experience swinging. SW is not a perfect number but more of a refinement. Extremes on either ends should be avoided at random. Normally, D0 is a good starting point.
My swing weight on my irons is d8 I have the same clubs in Florida and they are d2. Do you recommend adding a counter weight to bring it down to d2 or lighter? I have graphite shafts and I’m 65

Thank you for this awesome information, I look forward to digging in to your channel !

Yes. 2 grams at the head end affect SW by 1 point while it takes about 4 grams at the butt end to change SW 1 point.

D8,that feels crazy heavy,C9 to D1 is recommended for graphite irons shafts
How much does a normal extra wrap of tape weigh? Approximately. Thx!
2 grams
If I was fitted for a D7 swing weight in my driver, is that the same swing weight fit my other clubs?
no
Fantastic
Is it weird to be used to lighter swing weights? I came from older ping irons and newer clubs feels so weird.
you dont have to rebuild club to add swing weight. You can remove the grip and add tungsten powder or add tape weight.
