I played Titleist blades my whole life. Had a bad car accident last April and broke my right foot in 2 places. Came back in 4 months and my swing just couldn't produce the swing speed I used to have. Reluctantly switched to TM p790's (won a giveaway) & loved them. Just shot 67 last weekend with them.
Finally got fitted for my first set of irons - TM P790s - 5I-AW. The right length, stiffness, weight of shaft, and heads have made a world of difference to my ball striking…I can consistently square them up, get more out of a mis-hit, and have discovered a nice little draw to my ball flight. Getting a fitting is game-changing!
I just bought a brand new set of Wilson D9 Forged, 5-GW for $500. They look and feel amazing. Worth every penny and so much more affordable than buying a new set of the big brands. I couldn't be happier.
Yes! Haha, they are stunning to look at too. Wasn't sure how the Gap wedge would fit in and found I love it. Took out a 52 wedge to try it out in the bag and it's been really useful.
One of the biggest improvements for me was using thicker grips it made handling easier and shot placement for the long iron draws. I was always over gripping with small grips but nice jumbo ones just fit in the hands nicely.
I’m moving from regular Tour Velvets to Midsize Tour Velvets since I feel I need bigger grips. Gold pride site also recommended the same based on my hand size. Wow, been using regular TV for the last 25 years. Let’s see how this works out.
Moving to a muscle backed iron improved my game. Mostly from the extra practice I had to put in, and the motivational boost I got from wanting to master something that was a bit more difficult. Not that I'll ever be a master of the irons, ha ha, but the confidence that they inspire when addressing the ball for a cut or fade as opposed to SGI shovels I've used previously.... Totally worth it. Dropped my HC from 20 to 8 in two seasons of working my butt off. Blade irons with corded grips and no glove is a great teaching tool. Old Titleist 695mb's in my bag, and no notions of swapping them out any time soon.
Put a set of Taylormade Tour Pref MBs (2014) in the bag at Christmas. Dropped my handicap from 32 to 21 so far this year. Focusing on contact and learning how to improve it, as well as managing my misses, has helped me improve the most.
@@Cannimal I spent hours in the garage during winter with a net and a striking board working on the same thing. My old swing was a fade and bad shots were always a slice. My natural swing now is a baby draw. The data from an iron fitting a few years ago helped quite a bit as well.
I work at a golf course, needed 1 club at a fitting, my GM PGA pro asked the fitter to look at my irons, no upsell, he said you're fine, we'll talk next year. Love honest fitters!
Had the same thing happen to me - went for a fitting because my Mizunos are 16 years old. Tried the newest Mizunos. Difference? About 3% in length and dispersion. The fitter told me I'm fine. May mean I'm still shit. ;-)
I'm a 2 hcper and last year, after 10 years of playing, I decided to really invest into my golf for the first time. I spent money from my summer jobs and put them into my first fitting. After fitting, those guys made and sold me ,,my ideal set of new irons" for lot of money. But after 3-4 months of playing them, I just started to feel uncomfortable w them.. they made me shorter, less consistent and also two shafts I broke or damaged just w swinging. I did feel like Lord Voldemord w the Elder Wand. They were amazing clubs, but just didnt listened to me. So after 6 months after fitting I sold them and after that I bought for a 300 dollars a second hand Mizuno JPX 850 forged.. 8 years old, little bit scratched.. but now I'm playing the best golf ever, shooting around par every round and feel so much confidence w my game and w my irons. So I have a very best proof, that second hand clubs could be the best option for you! 😍Have a nice game!
Agree largely. I've been fitted twice .... first as a fairly new golfer, and couldn't get on with my new clubs at all. Then last year, as a still fairly new golfer, but now playing off 14. Again, I was worse off and quite a few ££££ lighter for it. It may work for some people, but it didn't for me. I was also fitted for my driver, but recently swapped into a shaft that a fitter may say isn't right for my swing speeds, but my results are better now. Edit to add: I lack consistency, so seeing me swing for an hour, in a studio, with no consequences and a perfect mat lie .... that isn't how I play and swing on a course.
The best iron to buy is one that makes it fun for you to play the game. This will be a butterknife for some and an entire set of hybrids for someone else.
Exactly! I'm a mid-handicaper, but I bought a set of forged Mizunos JPX 921 SEL because I like how they look and feel and they are classic lofts. Since I have good clubhead speed, all the more "helping" irons were going way too far and creating a huge gap at under 140 yds for me. I really do enjoy the feedback of the more bladed irons and accept the loss in performance when I miss hit them. Makes the pure shots that more rewarding :)
@@ede93 I don't even think it's about hcp. I think it's trajectory. If you can get enough height with an MB and it doesn't terrify you on a cold morning, play it. I'm a 15 and I play MP 243s. Beautiful high ball flight. I get more GIR than my buddies who all play more forgiving irons.
I took a leap of faith and got away from game improving irons. I bought the Takomo 101t's. Absolutely no regrets. Theyre harder to hit but my striking is beginning to improve and my front to back dispersion is tighter
Just getting going in Golf and I chose to go with a One Length set. On the low cost side I went with Pinemeadow PGX-1. Quite happy with the one length and a consistent setup from the 5 to the wedges.
I got a fitting last week for driver and irons, and ended up with AI Smoke Triple Diamond driver, and Ping i230 irons. I had absolutely no preference to brand so it was interesting to see what worked.
I just made my first irons upgrade since I started golfing a year ago. I started with Cobra game improvement irons from a box set and just upgraded to a set of TaylorMade P790s 4-GW (2019) and I bought them used for for $500 in fantastic condition. Best purchase ever, super happy I bought used and didn’t spend 3x the amount for brand new ones. I just gave them a deep cleaning and polished after buying and they look as good as new. Highly recommend buying used!
My first full set of clubs were Ben Sayers blades. Then went on to play various brands of cavity backs ending with Mizuno JPX921 Forged that I liked a lot and still have. Picked up a set of Wilson Staff blades this year and absolutely love them. The’ve forced me to re-learn how to strike the ball properly.
I used to play off 11 but that was 25 years ago. I took up golf again this year and have purchased a second hand set of Wilson D7s. I'm very slowly working towards putting in 3 cards to secure a 28 handicap. Not like it used to be I'm afraid but I've always enjoyed using Wilson equipment. My next set will be D9s.
I own a set of Adam’s Tight Lies, about 20 years old and I haven’t found anything to replace them yet. They play well and have great feel for me. The cast-forged face seems like a good option for me because they can handle my swing which isn’t good enough for blades but too good for cavity backed or similar. Thanks for the post.
I got myself some takomo 101. I'm 64 now, but a half decent golfer. And I think I should have gone for the 101T, but i will never know as you say. But these irons are fantastic quality, and I'm hitting golf balls further than when I was 40. Lovely🎉❤ Good information on buying irons Pete. Still loving that 24hr bidie stint😂😂😂❤
Second hand market is where I purchased my 2019 set of Epic Forged Star (Japanese Model) irons. Came with the grips and heads still wrapped in plastic. I have had them for a little over 2 years now and are an absolute steal at $400ish I paid.
The most memorable iron shots I have ever hit (the shots we all have in our memory bank) have been with older Mizzy MP69 Blades. Spot on flushed, perfect ball flight and landed within feet of the pitch mark while being directly on the yardage. The shots that keep us all coming back. While they awesome to play, colder mornings during fall golf season here in Calgary (5-9 degrees C) do not like thin blade strikes. LOL. I've blended with MP69 8-9 and MP53 CB 4-7. Perfect blend for me.
I play with the P.7MB and P.7MC for back ups and I'm 16 handicap, they're the best irons. I got rid of my P.790 for it. They're really good. I test and play with other brands, but I feel better with it.
Great video! I agree with you about personal safety concerns, especially when traveling, getting robbed on vacation is painful enough, but getting robbed with an authentic bag is even worse. To me, it makes sense to travel with a fake kislux bag and not carry any valuables that you would miss. Also, if your bag gets damaged by dust, stains, accidents, whatever it is, it doesn't matter even if it's fake.
I’ve got the ZX4 irons and love them too. Srixon makes incredible irons. Once I get a little better at striking the ball consistently, I’m looking to upgrade to the ZX5
it s all about practicing the swing and feel of the club. have had mp33 for over 20 yrs. the forged mb gives great feedback . but again you have to test swing the club before selection
Agree with it all, except perhaps point #7, Pete. If the score is your only focus, then yes, I agree. But if the score is secondary to enjoying your golf, or perhaps just a by-product of it, then buying irons that you aspire to play is perfectly OK! I play clubs I shouldn't be playing (skill-wise), but I enjoy my golf more because I'm using them. A shot, or two or three, extra on the score/handicap isn't as important to me as loving the clubs I'm using.
I have a set of Mizuno’s as well as TailorMade. You’re absolutely right they’re both remarkable irons however, the mistake I had to have corrected was the shaft that went in the iron without the engine of the head just hangs on so make sure you get the right shaft to go with these irons
Here's an opinion that might not be that popular... For a lot of us, "getting fit" indoors in a studio isn't the way to go. I don't know how many people (myself included) I have seen that go get fitted for irons in a studio and they stripe them, then get out to a grass range or play a round and they can't hit them. Turf interaction plays such a huge part of your golf swing. I would prefer to get fit outdoors on grass.
I've never played Ping irons, only their woods and putters and that has been more than 10 years ago. In May of this year I got a fitting for irons and after trying Mizunos and Taylormades, I chose the Ping i530 because the numbers were the best and I liked the way it looked. I've played 5 rounds with them and am very pleased. My GIR % went up 10%. I also picked up the Arccos sensors and link at the same time and am learning a lot of useful data. I recommend both the irons and the Arccos
I was fitted into Mizuno hot metal pros and decided to get Wilson Dynapower forged even though they are “players distance” not “game improvement” irons. Happy with my decision.
I’m pretty new to golf, been playing once a week or so for a couple months, plus a few range days. Got fitted last week and I really wanted a Callaway Apex set, but I shot the Mizuno JPX925s so much better than everything else. I wouldn’t have even considered Mizuno before the fitting.
speaking of value: i bought my set of Irons (Srixon ZX5 MK I) on sale last year in november. I paid 550 Euros for a set from 5 to PW. they look, and feel fantiastic and I never got along with an iron this good as with these. Therefore you don't have to spend a small fortune for a really good set of irons.
The zx4 mkiis are so good. They’re very power batty and have 20 yard gaps between clubs, but I utilize that to my advantage to play different shots for different situations. They are in the bag.
Questioned. What's the difference between the clubs with a high handy cap (Forgiveness) set of irons compared to a low handy cap. The way it seems the high handy cap irons cost the same if not less, but they say, they are easier to hit with. Real question.
My Mizuno MX-23s from 2007 are both forged and the most forgiving, yet shapable, irons I’ve ever played. I haven’t found a comparable contemporary replacement. So I’ve stuck with them, rightly or wrongly.
A bit curious where Cobra fits into this mix? They have great value, good quality and while not the marketing funds of bigger names, game really well. In particular their drivers & woods are always near the top each year in new equipment.
I asked my pro if I needed to replace my Ping G5s. His recommendation was to instead replace the Nike fairway woods I had at the time. Got Taylormades off Golfbidder and they were a massive improvement.
I think golfers should understand lofted vs de-lofted irons too. De-lofted clubs appear to be superior because they go farther, but that doesn't mean they are better for your game. They have their place for certain golfers. As my swing improved, I sold the de-lofted clubs for standard.
It's a stupid hustle tactic. If I were to replace my iron set with half the new sets on the market, I would need to go from 4 wedges to 5 or 6, because everything is 4-8 degrees stronger. "200 yards? Better get the 9 iron out..."
De lofted with correct weighting gives same height in flight, whilst affording slower swing speeds distance, do not decry the technology. I played plus handicap golf in my youth, now age 67, distance irons enable me to compete and remain single figures
I was expecting to get a set of titlest to replace my iron, but i enedup with a set of Pings due to the testing I did with all different types. Best forgivness and helped my stroke. Not too cheap, but not too expensive. They fit everyting i needed them to be.
Thanks so much for coming to visit us in Spanish Point, Pete. Excellent video, as usual, and I can’t fault the backdrop. You and the crew are welcome back any time.
That skit was brilliant 😂😂😂 love that you always include your team in everything you do on this channel. You all just seem like a great bunch of friends having the best time 👍🏼⛳️🥳
I highly recommend if you’re trying to save some cash and love the look of blades, but are a mid to high handicap - look into the Ping i500s in power spec. They’re from 2018 and personally I haven’t seen a better looking non blade iron come out since then. Maybe Takomo or Caley. Those look great too, but I can’t speak to their performance for mid to high handicaps.
You can also fit yourself pretty damn close to what you need using pings dot system. Obviously it might not be 100% perfect fit for you but that’s all dependent on what you’re willing to spend, and it’ll be a good baseline. Then eBay way to heats content.
I went from older Cobra Forge Tec black set, to a more forgiving Nike Vapor Flys, man the difference is almost immediate. The 1 thing I dislike bout the Nikes is sometimes I crank one too far (normal 9 iron is 140, sent em 155 sometimes) but the forgiveness is insane
I think with rise of brands like Takomo, Sub70, etc I think brands like Taylormade, Ping, and Titleist well start to take notice. Not saying they are going to outright slash their prices. But there will probably be some offerings that are maybe 100 or 150 more for a set to try and take some of that market. When you have pros walking playing with these direct to consumer brands the big dogs will notice.
I bought some Macgregor's from the thrift store. For $2. Just to mess around with bevause they were so cheap. Fell in love with them all the way around the board and have turned into me set. If it has looks, feel and give you the confidence you need over the ball; you may habe found your irons.
Great video Pete! Still rocking my t-rail irons from when I was a 30+ HC. Made it down to a 15 HC, but recently regressed a bit to a 20 and glad I hadn't made the move to a sleeker set as of yet. Maybe once I get down below a 15 again, I'll think about getting something more fit for me, but for now, they work!
I would not get blades as a 20 handicap, but if you want to go into some 790s as a 20, then I say go for it. I think you can step up a level, but maybe not more.
@@graemesmith3117 I have them in copper (just because I like the look of them), and I love them. My next set of irons will be when I get down to a low single digit handicap; until then, these are great!
Same boat! Got fitted for my 790’s 3 years back. Managed to get down from 18 to 12.4 currently and have surprised myself with breaking 80 twice recently. Eyes on single digits next year. Debating 770’s or a combo set. Until then, enjoying the journey and the 790’s
Last year I switched from Mizuno mp-20 hmb. To title list t-350. It has made a huge difference. More forgiveness = lower scores for me. Thanks for insight on video
I got in on a deal on the Wilson D9 forged. I guess because they were getting rid of the w/s on the emblem, they blew their older irons out on massive discount. Quite literally less than half price. I paid $640 Canadian for 5 through gap wedge. That's 367 british pounds for an incredible set of irons......that is wild! I'd go looking for these if you're in the market for a modern set of forged irons on the cheap, which are not by any means a cheap feeling iron quite the opposite. Not sure if those deals are still out there though.
@@darrengooday9333 I'm in Canada. This was from Golf Town, our big box golf store here.... Demo clubs yet showed up wrapped brand new in Wilson box. So maybe search D9 demo clubs?
Cobra forged irons are criminally underrated. Play the Fly Z Pros and feel as good as any Mizunos I've tried in the past. And, they are cheaper than other big box brands.
By pure chance Pete I’ve picked up my 5-GW ZX4’s today. My first set of fitted irons. I’d love to see you do a review on them. Something else I’d like to see which not many content creators seem to have covered is forgiving irons for those with faster swing speeds that aren’t absolute rocket ships. I’ve been playing 2 years, have decent speed but have the inconsistency of a relatively new golfer. At the moment I’m considering after a few rounds of testing of maybe having the clubs de-lofted a little. Not every mid-high handicapper swings a 7 iron at 70-80mph but there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of equipment aimed at these. Especially as more younger people get into the game swing speeds will in general go up
Genuine question but its a piece of metal on a stick, does it actually really matter? I can understand the shafts making more of a difference from swing speeds but the metal is briefly hitting the ball in a set direction so how much of a difference can it really make?
I am using the TaylorMade Speed Blades as a new golfer and still high handicaper. I got them used on eBay an they fit me really well and I saved a lot of money
Custom fit is great and all but can get very pricey if you are fit into aftermarket shafts. Club champion in the US, you pay for heads, shaft, grips, the build and an option to pure the shafts. A $1200 set of irons can end up double the price.
Lifelong Mizuno's blades player here. Tried many brands but nothing quite hit that same sweet spot, pun intended, until when I've bought my first set of Srixon. Even better than Mizuno.
I have about 30 sets of irons and rarely use the same set twice in one season. You know, because adding a challenge to golf is always a good decision. I’ve been surprised how similarly I score with each. My best scores have come from Wilson Staff FG-17s, MacGregor 1025M v-foils, and 99 Hogan Apex. My worst scores are with 120 year old hickories.
I don’t play them, but I would steer anyone I know who was looking for a great value towards the Maltby clubs from The Golfworks. Especially if you are near central Ohio and can go there for the fitting too. I have not hit the newer TE+ which is their most traditional head, but the TS1 IM, TS4, and definitely the TS3 are fantastic for what they cost. I think Maltby’s have always been ok and a good option to save some money, but this current generation is truly unreal and I think they finally have the looks to match the play, which they certainly did not before.
I like Taylormade and ping. Love the 2014 Taylormade MC tour preferred, ping s55, ping iblade. I don’t like any other clubs. I especially do not like the new hollow iron sets.

I am considering them. Can you work the ball with these irons?
it s all about practicing the swing and feel of the club. have had mp33 for over 20 yrs. the forged mb gives great feedback . but again you have to test swing the club before selection
Yes yes yes to this
I got fitted into Ai Smoke irons indoors and they are now in my trunk as I absolutely HATE their turf interaction
Are Muscle backs and Blades the same thing?
I've never played Ping irons, only their woods and putters and that has been more than 10 years ago. In May of this year I got a fitting for irons and after trying Mizunos and Taylormades, I chose the Ping i530 because the numbers were the best and I liked the way it looked. I've played 5 rounds with them and am very pleased. My GIR % went up 10%. I also picked up the Arccos sensors and link at the same time and am learning a lot of useful data. I recommend both the irons and the Arccos
I agree about the i530’s they are amazing clubs
Review the Callaway Diablos please.. old tech that I still use and feel so good !
I have the previous gen ZX4, really enjoy them
I got a set of Wilson D9 forged November 2023 on black Friday deal 5i - GW (7 irons) for £400 brand new 😊 I absolutely love them
Zx7,one of the best irons out there
Last Spring I bought the 2021 version of PXG irons the 0211s. Got them for 99 dollars a club...pw thru 5 iron...600 dollars for a great set of irons
I use Wilson D9 forged and I really think Wilson need more publicity. Also I did try the Srixon zx5 and they were just as good
Second for Wilson. They don’t invest in marketing like the other brands but their irons just feel SO much better.
Iv got the 2019 p790 s forgiving and easy to hit 😊
speaking of value: i bought my set of Irons (Srixon ZX5 MK I) on sale last year in november. I paid 550 Euros for a set from 5 to PW. they look, and feel fantiastic and I never got along with an iron this good as with these. Therefore you don't have to spend a small fortune for a really good set of irons.
My Takomo 301 CB’s arrived a few months ago and they’re great
Does takomo deliver 0.5 or 1 inch longer? Regards
The zx4 mkiis are so good. They’re very power batty and have 20 yard gaps between clubs, but I utilize that to my advantage to play different shots for different situations. They are in the bag.
Thanks Peter for another great video. For the record I’m using ‘game improvement’ irons and play off 2 handicap. As you said, go for a fitting 😎
Just got fit for some P7MB today so I am glad these got the big thumbs up
Pete Finch and Grant Horvat, two of the sweetest swings...
Just got my takomo irons! Very impressive irons
@@Pud56 great input. I feel you're one of the groups distance irons are great for.
Thanks again!
I got the Ping I530's - being a 23 Handicap aiming to lower my HC a little - I'm totally in love with them
Great clubs those
I thought I recognized that course! Had a fun round last October!
I went with the Wilson Dynapower Forged they feel great
I've got a fitting Thursday and hoping these work out for me 😂, really like the look of them. Would be my first forged iron
@@jgdbb30004 mine too I love them
I have a set of orka cti forged irons.
Superb set of irons.
I picked up a second hand set of Taylormade rsi2 4-pw+aw and sw for £200. Pretty decent set!
The Ping Blueprint S are probably the best irons I've hit. They're never leaving my bag.
Im a high handicapper in 2nd year of golf, was thinking of getting Aerojet irons after watching many reviews. Whats the thoughts?
Get a fitting. It doesn’t cost much and it might stop you making an expensive mistake.
I went from older Cobra Forge Tec black set, to a more forgiving Nike Vapor Flys, man the difference is almost immediate. The 1 thing I dislike bout the Nikes is sometimes I crank one too far (normal 9 iron is 140, sent em 155 sometimes) but the forgiveness is insane
you’re literally my comfort person i love you kislux !
Let's get Pete up to a million, folks! Smash that subscribe button with the people's elbow!
I bought some Macgregor's from the thrift store. For $2. Just to mess around with bevause they were so cheap. Fell in love with them all the way around the board and have turned into me set. If it has looks, feel and give you the confidence you need over the ball; you may habe found your irons.
I've been using 2009 Taylormade Burner irons for 15 years and can't figure out what I should be replacing them with
Blades look way cooler but game improvements feel so much better to play (stealth 2s are some of the best irons I’ve played)
I love how all the comparisons are to Mizuno. Should be a no-brainer which irons to buy.
Got 790s as a 18 is handicap, now 10.1 and love it when I play well
@@graemesmith3117 I have them in copper (just because I like the look of them), and I love them. My next set of irons will be when I get down to a low single digit handicap; until then, these are great!
@@mccalljeff just need to break 80! So close this month, like you won’t change unless I regularly achieve this.
@@graemesmith3117 you and I are probably around the same then. I’ve gotten to where I’m low 80s regularly, but breaking it is a barrier.
Same boat! Got fitted for my 790’s 3 years back.
Managed to get down from
18 to 12.4 currently and have surprised myself with breaking 80 twice recently.
Hey Pete. Great vid. The Vice irons!!!! Can you give them a review? The forged ones with the blue accent look stunning
I play the zx4. Best set of irons I’ve ever had.
Where did you get those?
What site was that on? Cheers
Thanks for the shoutout, Pete!
I have a set of Tour Edge Exotics, and love them.
Especially as more younger people get into the game swing speeds will in general go up
I have ping 430s ! Love them
great video Pete , enjoyed
Glad you enjoyed it
i did the 7 and never regreted it. but then i spend like 30h a week playing (training or on the course). my iron game is fantastic that's cool :d
Love my Stealth HD 2
Genuine question but its a piece of metal on a stick, does it actually really matter? I can understand the shafts making more of a difference from swing speeds but the metal is briefly hitting the ball in a set direction so how much of a difference can it really make?
What year is your hoodie from FootJoy the open one with the yellow cord string?
Spanish point is a great little course.
I am going back to using my ping Eye 2's....My Callaway Apex Pro aren't doing it for me anymore. made a nice 71 with Pings last thursday...
I am using the TaylorMade Speed Blades as a new golfer and still high handicaper. I got them used on eBay an they fit me really well and I saved a lot of money
They were a great club that kind of disappeared
I currently use cobra forgetec irons and have done for 18 months - I’m currently off 8.5 and don’t see me changing them for at least another 30 months
Great options for most budgets, thanks
I just bagged XXIO X2, from 4i to SW including AW, for 500€ ex demo, down from 2500€. Not sure I can lose.
Spanish Point, great 9 hole course, premium on accuracy 👍
Im very happy with my Takomo 101 irons. Able to shape it when needed, straight, and good distance.
