Manon - Act I, 'Bedroom' pas de deux (The Royal Ballet)

- Marianela Nuñez as Manon and Federico Bonelli as Des Grieux
Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpiece of modern ballet is revived this Season as part of continuing celebrations of MacMillan’s profound impact on British ballet, to mark the 25th anniversary of his death. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk
Kenneth MacMillan’s source for Manon was the 18th-century French novel by Abbé Prévost, already adapted for opera by Massenet and Puccini. Renowned dance musician Leighton Lucas and his assistant Hilda Gaunt provided a score drawn from across Massenet’s music, including his famous yearning Elégie as the theme for the lovers. The premiere was given on 7 March 1974, with the lead roles of Manon and Des Grieux danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet’s repertory, and a touchstone of adult, dramatic dance.
MacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon and her struggle to escape poverty. Designs by his regular collaborator Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable destitution. MacMillan’s spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Manon and Des Grieux’s impassioned pas de deux - recalling the intensity of MacMillan’s earlier Romeo and Juliet - that drive this tragic story, and make Manon one of MacMillan’s most powerful dramas. - Розваги

I know that Swan Lake, the Nutcracker, Giselle ... are very famous but i have to admit that this is the most romantic pas de deux i've ever seen
Have you seen Romeo and Juliets pas de deux balcony scene?
It’s very beautiful. But if you like this one, you should also watch Onegin’s and Lady of the Camelias’ pas de deux. They are breathtaking.
i do agree. they are fully infatuated with eachother and it shows.
Its the most incredible ballet with a believable plot and very moving. My favourite bsllet of all time. She is the most talented dancer at the rb. Watch the whole ballet Macmillan at his best.

Imagine having to do this ballet piece with your crush
it would be impossible not to fall in love
Suicidal🎼 suicidal🎼
Hah, he’s a TERRIBLE dancer

I remember seeing this performed as a child and thinking “this is what true love feels like.” Everything about this piece, especially with this cast, seeps into your heart and give you a glimpse of what real love feels like.
Hello, was this performed in New Orleans?
while i was watching it that was the only thing my mind was thinking. love finding this comment.
@@lalouisianecreole4883 no royal opera house in London
@@lalouisianecreole4883 that.. has nothing to do with anything?
@@ee-tq3xu oh 😂
So I'm kinda obsessed with New Orleans if that answers your question...besides New Orleans has a rich history with Theater, and the play is Manon Lescaut is partially set in New Orleans
you are lying if this music just doesn't give you goosebumps
Ama Sam
Love your comment!!! I do i do. Get goosebumps. My heart will actually really ache with love of this. My eyebrows rise. Goosebumps. Then my heart feels full. Then I sneeze because of trying not to cry.
Wish i could know the name of it.
Not everyone is sensitive to classical music.
This song is so gorgeous
It's so beautiful that makes me cry ❤️
Ok, I feel like everyone is mostly talking about Marianela, and I get that she's an amazing ballerina, but shall we appreciate Federico who also worked really well with her and I'd say he sucessfully played a great partner, making Marianela outshine herself in this performance with all the movements.
Agreed, their chemistry was perfect!
EXACTLY THERE BOTH EQUALLY AMAZING
He's an incredible partner, a good partner means you focus on the ballerina x
You can really get a sense of their relationship from the dance (I don't know the ballet, I'm just going off what I see here). It's at first playful and fun, but as it goes on the dancers reveal a deep love and affection for one another, and near the end, you see just how strong their bond is. It's really powerful, and also shows just what a pas de deux can really do when it's done well.
That sums up my thoughts exactly! It's amazing how moving this particular pas de deux is...
Sami Unger, Check out Bolle&DuPont, they are the best (imho) they own this.😙
you really need to see the whole ballet. Its, in my opinion the greatest ballet ever created. It has everything, love sadness, joy betrayal, and my god is the leading lady sexy. Its a typical macmillan creation. Real life stories with incredible choreography. Nunez is the best dancer at covent garden, still after 20years and was officially voted so. she has a wonderful body and an incredible techniche but is so natural, even her facial expressions are to be savoured. Little winks and movements of her nose even, make her the most expressive dancer on the planet she can dance anything with pure class. Watch er in La fill mal garde, heaven.
They kissed for real on stage 😍
For the life of me I'll never understand why the Royal Opera House didn't record a dvd of this cast - it was just glorious.
it's recorded, we can see it right here, but why hasn't it been released on DVD? the same with the polunin version.
@@larahartley7607 the full version is on here?
Oh my gosh, really? I was just thinking that I was going to get a copy of it. How tragic.
I know they did a live broadcast but i dont know why they didnt release it
Complete lunacy, what CAN they have been thinking.
this is amazing but the first time I saw it I was shook cause I'd never seen people kiss during a ballet dance before
One Girl Yeah, I was surprised too.
I mean a little but this was some serious kissing lol 😅
A lot of classical ballets will have one or two "big" kisses, but sometimes they don't - it depends on which production and choreography you're watching 😊
Apart from being dancers, they're actors too!
Same I was pretty shocked as well
So, storytime for anyone who's interested. I watched this video when it came out 5 years ago, and instantly fell in love with it. Not just the choreography, the acting, and the music, but what it all represents when combined. "This is what true love must feel like", I told myself. I was so emotionally taken by this video that I showed it to the person I had been dating for many years, excited to see the reaction of the person I loved. He basically made fun of the video and the dance moves, which was understandably a very disappoint reaction for me. Things ended up not working out for a number of reasons, and I went on to find the love of my life, who I have now been married to for a year. I thought that I knew what love was back then, only to have truly found it now in my husband.
I am so taken by this video, because to me, it represents one of the most liberating aspects of love; freedom. To be completely at home in another person's soul; to know that they are at home in yours. To know that they will be a constant source of love, support, friendship, and understanding; all of it creates the purest feeling of freedom because you know that together, there is nothing that you cannot do. Revisiting this video with this new understanding lead to me ugly crying (out of gratitude, haha!), because I now know what it is to be loved like how this beautiful performance represents so perfectly. I wish for everyone that they find this love in their lifetime.
Marianella Nunez is an outstanding artist ! in addition of her incredible ballerina skills she's a great actress as well. I saw many ballet, rehearsals, interviews from her and I am always moved by the subtle humanity coming from her. She is a precious gift for ballet lovers as me.
Yes!! She's argentine
If the foreplay don’t look like this, I don’t want it XDD
Underrated comment!
Brilliant!
3:27. How is she moving her feet that fast! Amazing!
This man is 43 YEARS OLD!!!!!! Let that sink in.
He looks 20-
1:42 the way he looks at her, so beautiful
Molly Matthews we’re all just hopeless romantics aren’t we
This part of the ballet always makes me think "excuse me? Do I need to give these guys some space?" lol
Federico Bonelli's face is more expressive than that of any male dancer I have ever seen.
I wish I could "like" this a few more times! It's wonderful. Marianela Nunez is perfect in this role. I wish the Royal Ballet would put this performance on DVD. I saw it at the movie theater and it's gorgeous.
The most romantic pas de deux I’ve ever seen. What Marianela does after the kiss is absolutely amazing. The joy, the passion, the lightness, the jumps, the hugs, everything is beautiful. They’re both so awesome. ❤❤❤
Marianela is always wonderful but she is SO special in this role, I find her utterly enchanting.
Federico is so gorgeous and yet has so much boyish charm, loved his interpretation!
4:17 just look at that smile... Jesus. Marianela is so incredibly gorgeous.
One of the most beautiful pas de deux I have ever seen. So much passion and joy!
Shes so perfect! The greatest ballerina of our era! The artistry..the technique... they made me cry when i saw them in Manon... and Federico, oh my❤
She is probably the best South American Ballerina of a generation, rather as Osipova can be said to be the same as a Russian Ballerina, and Lauren Cuthbertson the same for English Ballet. They are so different, and so gifted, each in their own way.
I watch this almost every single day and it brings tears to my eyes each time.
Ho Yan Law z
i watch the one with natalie and VLADIMIR SHKLYAROV. he is sexy and passionate and fun-loving. and there is one moment, well maybe two that take my breath away. a very different portrayal of des grieux. ua-cam.com/video/lxWN9agwC2k/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
one of the best recordings ever
you know how I can watch this whole pay? I'd pay
Sonja Sophia And yet it doesn’t seem to be available on DVD which is just insane.
Helen Wang I did know about the Sarah/Vadim release, but having seen this clip I want the rest the performance. Marianela was born for this role just as she’s my ideal Kitri.
P
god.. her excitement, the pure love in her expression at 3:26 is always such a sigh to behold. truly one of the best productions of manon..
He brings such joy to the dance, you cannot help but be caught up with them. What a delightful performance!
This is the most romantic ballet piece I have ever seen, it evokes such strong feelings in me. I revisit it now and then, when I miss him too much, and I get chills every time. How can you not think of your own unrequited love when you watch them, when you hear this music? He’s all I think about when I close my eyes and listen. I picture him smiling, I play over the memory of the little tint of green in his deep blue eyes glistening underneath a flourescent light. I hope he smiled a lot today. I miss the way he would make me a peppermint tea without asking and call me ‘little one’, and the ghost of the scent tugs my heart, writing this. He could tell you a whole story with just a look, something within him, I just have always understood, even the night we met, I understood. We were never truly strangers. Something about this piece, I don’t just hear it, I feel it. It makes me ache, but in a way that makes me feel both broken beyond repair and as whole as I possibly can, because I feel it with such intensity that even my darkest wounds battle to wake up and be beautiful again. It’s such a warm and real, lovely sounding piece, much like my unrequited love, and he is just as warm and lovely, and sincere and beautiful. He is beautiful. And love is simply not a strong enough word.
beautifully said. i really understand this. truly so lovely and painful in the best way.
@@alinesol6973 are you going through a similar thing my friend?
my god, i can only say one thing and that is i hope you become a writer.
@@strawberrydreamgirl1248 I haven’t seen him in over eight months, spoken to him either. Outside my window is flaming pink, it reminds me of an August night in my garden two years ago, with him. I haven’t missed him like this in so long, haven’t allowed myself to indulge in the deep burrows of my unrequited love. It hurts tonight. But the family of blackbirds outside are enjoying the flaming pink against the breeze, and I try to do the same. But it hurts. I’m clawing on to every fragment of him I can remember, every shade of blue in his eyes I used to count at the breakfast table, every touch on my shoulder, every time he cheated in a board game when he thought I didn’t notice, all his stubborn attempts to feed me a bite of his dinner, all the times he spoke about his parents, a thousand miles away in his home country, that look I still can’t pinpoint in his eyes when he called me a ‘cloud person’ in the museum, we were wearing masks, all I could see were his eyes. But I saw him, more than I ever did, in those few seconds. My heart is bruised and heavy from years of nailing these memories into it, I am bleeding out and willingly, all the while, he is probably looking at the same sky, painted pink and on fire, forgetting me.
This is so romantic and beautiful oh my gosh
This is it. This is my favorite video on the internet
Wow just the way she sneaks up behind him makes you know you're in for a treat... what an incredible performance!!!
The greatest Manon of all times!!
You are too young to remember the greatest Manon of them all and that was without doubt Antoinette Sibley.
After being amazed by nela for countless times, you cant deny but federico has one of the best partnering skills and artistry when it comes to pas de deux.
I would absolutely love to see more of the two, esp federico!!
Bonelli is so pleasing to the eye! He is utterly convincing in this role. Mariana as always, is perfection. Exquisite and glorious.
This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Being in love told perfectly through dance.
Measure the mastery of these dancers and this orchestra: Watch this again, and again and again and it continues to live and to breathe. Breathtaking. Sublime. Alive!! Viva Marianela!
Still watching. Federico is a phenomenal partner, I think? So tuned in, intuitive, attentive. I’m not a dancer, I’m a horse trainer-and horses have a way of listening with their whole bodies, and of giving themselves to us that, if we trust them, they will place their power and grace in our service... this is what I see in this pas de deux.
Marianela is not only a beautiful dancer, but an amazing actress as well. And all the lifts were flawless they were so fluid.
I am so excited to see this. I absolutely love Marianela Nuñez: graceful, athletic and so exuberant when she performs.
I also really love Federico Bonelli, he's a present dancer who always has his partners' back.
I remember seeing and loving the rehearsal of this pas de deux with Melissa Hamilton and Matthew Golding. Now we get to see the whole staged performance. I really is so cool to see and hear the technical and symbolic details, the watch all that work and effort reflected in 3-4mins.
the moment right before they actually kiss is just so deep ive never seen this before but that moment just made my eyes well up with tears because you can feel how passionate and sweet their love is . it’s really what true intimacy looks like . just beautiful
I have just seen this at The ROH with David Hallberg and Natalia Osipova. The former was impeccable as usual, but this performance of Marianela Nuñez is truly beautiful. She is one of the most versatile dancers I know. I am very much looking forward to seeing her in The Sleeping Beauty with my nephew, his first visit to a ballet 😊😊
I have never felt more single than when watching this omg🥲🥲
Nela and Federico make a great duo. Exquisite
That music...🎶 the highlights where he lifts her...omg, in tears, every time!
Their chemistry is so amazing
This piece brought me to tears..I shall deem this with prestige.
if true love could be captured in song and dance, this would be it 😭❤
i’ve never heard of Manon until now, but you will most definitely catch me listening to this entire ballet on repeat for the next week :’)
I'm obsessed with this performance
Federico bonelli is just incredibile..... the emotions both can express are incredible
OMG !!! Marianela Nunez is so amazing !!! perfect !! she's the dance !
Their chemistry gave me chills!
Wow! This is definitely one of the best ballet performances I've ever seen. Wonderful piece of music and choreography. Marianela and Federico are both gorgeous and incredibly skilled and they've got great chemistry. I love it.
this is the best performance i've ever seen OMG
The music...
Beautiful performance by Marianela and Federico - and let's not forget the magnificent interpretation of the orchestra. This brought tears to my eyes!
A pure distillation of beauty, precision, and passion. To this, there can be no equal. Bravo.
Three words to say about this amazing ballerina: Prima Ballerina Absoluta!!!!!
I've never seen something so beautiful in all my life! Is this what fell in love feels like? 🥺
I can't stop watching...I can't!!!! She's absolutely exquisite and perfect. Her arms and pointes remember me Ferri and Lopatkina. Federico is a great dancer and better partenaire but she flys, she can dance alone........(sorry, an argentine woman speaking.....)

This choreography is so wonderful, and the two characters are so convincing.
Beautiful.
The music and choreography bring out all the emotions of a bittersweet love affair. The dancers exemplified all the passion of two lovers. C❤❤❤
Очень изящно и элегантно выглядит исполнение. Спасибо за возможность видеть подобную работу. Невероятно)
They are such subtle, wonderful actors . . . and they dance too!
This has to be one of my favourite ballet pieces ever 😍
Amazing, brilliant, captivating, devastating and entertaining, in a perfect 5 minute slice.

hahaha right? where have I heard that before 🤔
Every time I watch this I cry. It’s so elegant and beautiful.
Technically difficult but smashingly beautiful and lyrical….as a former ballet student loved every moment of these talented dancers.
É o Pas de Deux mais lindo do mundo! Que beleza, que magnífico!
Why she’s so beautiful?
You know it's good when you actually get emotional😢One of the most, if not the most beautiful renditions of this pas de deux.💖💖
Breathtaking performance of joy of love
She is quite the primma--lithe, fluid, extended, flawless.
Not me replaying the kiss 😳✋
Just gonna leave this here for myself - 2:29
Their faces are so radiant!
I could watch this over and over again! Glorious.........
Gente, estou sem palavras, quanto 💘 amor, pas de deux mais lindo da vida! Foi muito além da técnica, quanta energia e o quanto toca nossas emoções. Pra mim, eles se amam real! ❤️
Es maravilloso
Marianela Nuñez is literally my role model bc I do ballet and it’s my second year en pointe and she just is everything that I want to be when I’m older if I was given the opportunity! Not only that but the way she and her partner display that chemistry in their dancing but also acting is remarkable and I could watch this 100 more times and still not stop loving every second of it!
The most impressive and emotional pas de deux EVER! Almost crying everytime 🤍
This was absolutely breath-takingly stunning! Got really emotional watching it and could feel the characters love for each other!!
That is some sexy ballet going on there...
I have a ballerina friend, quite a beautiful, well known dancer, who had to stop her career. When she went (?) 'en point' and would spin on one toe, she would release violent farts, even heard over the orchestra. She would be in tears, but the public would be hysterically laughing. So sad and awful for her.
