  • Sarah Lamb as Baroness Mary Vetsera and Steven McRae as Crown Prince Rudolf. Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling was filmed and screened live in cinemas on 15 October 2018. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk...
    Mayerling is based on the true story of the deaths of Crown Prince Rudolf and his teenage mistress Mary Vetsera in 1889. This dark and intense ballet was created for The Royal Ballet in 1978 and is regarded by many as among Kenneth MacMillan's finest works. Orchestrated and arranged by John Lanchbery, the music of Franz Liszt sweeps the story to its intense conclusion, and sumptuous designs by Nicholas Georgiadis bring to life the formal, oppressive world of the Austro-Hungarian court.
    The large-scale crowd and court scenes show the whole Company off at its dramatic finest. But it is MacMillan's choreography for Rudolf, one of the most technically and emotionally demanding roles in the repertory for male dancers, that makes this ballet so iconic. Rudolf's emotional decline is charted through daring and visceral pas de deux with his mother, his wife and Mary Vetsera - choreography that pushes classical ballet to its limits.

      If you think that this is what healthy sex looks like, then there's something wrong with you. They show an innocent, naive young girl and a man on the edge of insanity, who is clearly violent. You could probably call it rape.

    • @doddypemberley8701
      @doddypemberley8701 4 роки тому +69

      E. W. The pas de deux with his wife Stéphanie in first acte is rape. This one with Mary Vetsera is not: she clearly wants it and has a very twisted mind (she threatens him with a gun before) and that is exactly why he’s so into her. They have the same morbide fascination for death.
      But we agree on the idea that this is not healthy sex because none of them is really sane.

    I love Sarah Lamb’s embodiment of the character. In Mayerling, they make it explicitly clear that Baroness Mary Vetsera, despite being 17, is not a coerced innocent and has a strength and cunning of her own as well as an edge that captivated Rudolph. The expressions on her face are perfect for each point in the pas de deux, and it adds something extra that really compliments Stephen McRae’s slightly crazed and aggressive performance.

    Well, it was sensual but really more accurately described as sexual. But nothing in the world could make sexual human contact more incredibly beautiful than ballet and two great ballet dancers. Sara is so beautiful - her face, her body, her feet, her litheness. She is a porcelain vase and a steel magnolia. She is demeure but uninhibited, strong, and free. Simply, she is splendid. He is ravenous. These two dancers are magnetic gold.

    Usually a huge admirer of Sir MacMillan’s choreography; however, not a fan of this particular pas de deux. The dancers are lovely enough, but I feel the choreography is merely one pose after another with very little convincing motivation connecting one pose to the next. Perhaps I’m in error to compare this ballet with MacMillan’s jewels- R&J, and Manon, but my point in doing so is to say that those particular ballets were the embodiment of a ‘through line,’ meaning- the character motivation was clear from one movement to the next. MacMillan choreographed Mayerling over a decade after R&J, and four years after Manon. Perhaps- as many choreographers do- MacMillan defaulted to tried and true moves/poses that proved successful in his earlier ballets but lacked the novelty factor. And I agree with other commenters- I like Sarah’s brunette hair.

    • @karenkaren3189
      @karenkaren3189 5 років тому +2

      I actually kind of agree. Each ballet on, it seemed he felt a need to top himself. A little more flow, with less challenging poses would have made this more satisfying....for me, at least. Plus I kind of have my heart in my mouth, worrying that they will get injured.

      thank you for saying this. i often wondered if it was just me. and i've watched several different dancers, from Mukhamedov to Polunin and always feel the same thing. they spend so much time reaching to get into the right position.
      that said, there are times when i think this is pure sex on pointe!
