    I'm so glad hair professionals are making their mark on UA-cam. There are so many random people doing hair videos giving bad advice. It would be good for everyone if UA-cam did something to incentivize licensed/working professionals across all fields to make video content.

      Sincere what's wrong with that? Genuinely asking because I've used Aztec clay mud to get rid of build up and it did define my curls. Of course I've realized shampoo probably does the same for cheaper but at the time thats all I had home and thought why not.

    I use petroleum to protect my scalp, use coconut oil on the already relaxed hair before applying a touch up, I stretch for 16 weeks minimum, and only leave the relaxer on for 5-7 minutes - I'm not a hair stylist but I feel like this is all common sense... I'm so shocked to hear some people do it every 4wks and re-relax the ends that were already relaxed. Yikes.

Any longer and my pattern will loosen a lot and I Definately don't want that. Really the texturizer removes my frizz i guess because that's the only changes I see. AND I have about 4 different textures on my hair. I have to time and apply correctly

    Yes, finally someone who gets the purpose of a relaxer! I always used to put relaxers on my hair religiously (Every 6 months), before I let my hair go natural in 2013, and my purpose was to relax my kinky curly 3c-4b pattern in the root of my hair. Due to the hard process of detangling my hair and frizz, I put relaxers on my root because it helped a ton with shrinkage and a whole load of other thing's. As someone who has learned to deal with my own natural state of my hair now, I would never sit here and bash relaxers, because relaxers helped me when I didn’t know how to manage my hair before 2013. Thank you for explaining what the real purpose of relaxers are for😆 BTW I love your channel and have learned a lot from your tutorials and informative video's. Keep up the great work!

I decided to go natural once the illness was under control and I now have healthy hair within the confines of my medications. I got my hair relaxed about 3 months ago and to be honest I don't regret it and I hope I won't later. I didn't let d relaxer stay more than 5 minutes on my head and I won't be relaxing until at least every six months. My cousin started relaxing her hair 2016 after going natural for about 4 years and believe me her hair has grew really longer than before and more healthy. I have asked her how she cares for her hair. She said she doesn't use heat frequently and massages d hair alot with avocado oil and coconut oil, castor oil and most importantly she relax every 6 months or even more. There is so much more she does but can't start typing it lol but I do know she really do take care of her hair alot. Wish me luck and if this relaxer doesn't work for me, am not afraid to start from the beginning again.

    This information was was gold. I love that you take time to educate ppl on hair care instead of "just styling."
    In hair school my instructor used to call calcium hydroxide relaxers the "no lye" lie. I agree with relaxer getting a bad rap. Mainly because they are being applied incorrectly. For my relaxed clients and myself. I've always used a mild "lye" relaxer. I've always found that I had beautiful results without that "hard" calcium buildup on the hair. I don't recommend ppl doing relaxers themselves because it's hard to see overlapping, especially in the back. One tip I would like to add if you don't mind. Someone taught me to add a heavy conditioner to the length on the relaxed hair before doing a touch up. This doesn't completely stop the damage if overlapping happens, but it buys a few minutes to get to the sink if a small amount is accidentally overlapped.
    Lastly, would you please do a video on relaxing, snatching edges in tight braid, adding tight weaves to small children? I see so many kids with no edges or over-processed/heat damaged hair at such young ages.
    Keep the vids coming!

    I used to get relaxers every 3 weeks for years, and my stylist would always cut my hair, which left me wondering why my hair stayed the same length. It didn't start growing until I moved to a new location. And I always grew up thinking the burn was normal. Ever though my mom would tell me to let the stylist know when there was just a slight itch, I powered through the pain anyways. I stopped getting relaxers 8 years ago, when a bad relaxer experience(with someone else) took most of my nape area out. I still struggle with severe self-inflicted heat damage, but I will never go back.

    THANK YOU! ugh, I stopped going to my hairstylist because she was touching up my hair WAY too frequently (like every three weeks -_-). AND, she was not basing my scalp. I started doing my own hair for that reason (in addition to it being too expensive). I base my scalp EVERY TIME I relax my hair. It is also good to know that just because it says "sensitive scalp" does not mean anything. As I mentioned before, I touch up my hair once every 1-2 months. I'm definitely going to stretch that time frame out more. I don't think it is necessary for me to touch up my hair once every 1-2 months. I went back and read the "Mizani Butter Blend relaxer" kit (medium/normal strength) that I use and it has Sodium Hydroxide in it. I definitely will be deep conditioning my hair and using a more intense shampoo to get rid of the build up. As far as a deep conditioners go, what product do you recommend? I have a "medium" curl pattern. Does it matter what deep conditioning product you use for your curl pattern? Would you recommend deep conditioning once a week or once every two weeks for chemically treated hair?

    • @GetGlamFam

    I am listening to this and it seems like common sense to follow the proper guidance given, and to take the up most care to the hair after using chemicals. It makes me so glad that my mom knew what she was doing. I grew up doing all that and more to protect my hair and scalp when relaxing, so it seems so strange to me that people are not following that (but then again I had very sensitive skin and eczema, along with severely dry hair - so she was always very cautious with what we used and how). Though I am so glad you spoke about the kiddie vs adult relaxer situation as I found the kiddie ones I had tried, did my hair so much damage and so I stopped relaxing. However, I couldn't manage my scalp condition well with the density of my hair as it didn't allow my scalp to breath, so I went back to relaxing but using a gentle ADULT one, and went on to have the best hair health ever when using a relaxer.

    Great EXPLANATION. A chemical relaxer is a technical application of a time-sensitive chemical that can cause serious problems. That's why it is labeled "FOR PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY"

I don’t think that I will ever do it again. I had dry itchy scalp and dry hair but in all honesty I didn’t care for my hair like I should have. You sound very knowledgeable.

    🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 O-M-G You Are Amazing 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 Finally a licensed professional speaking the truth about hair care and actually being honest about relaxers. I’m natural (my last relaxer was more than a decade ago), but I love the science of black hair in general and learning ways to get my hair in its healthiest state possible. Find it fascinating. There is so much conjecture and division about black haircare, so it’s refreshing to find your channel. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to find you, but I’m so glad I have. New subbie. 🤩😍🤩

    • @ronwilliams717
      @ronwilliams717 6 років тому

      Okay when relaxers first got popular they were made to solve all your problems. you were suppose to take the hair as straight as possible. Reason why was because at that time people were not putting direct heat on the hair . They were roller setting using setting lotion and sitting you under the dryer we didn't have blow dryers, and the hot marcel irons were only used on pressed natural hair and that's it, so the hair had to be bone straight at that time other wise it did not turn out good. I remember doing those relaxers in the 1960's and that was the idea behind them.

    Thank you for giving this scientific information in a basic "viewer friendly" format. Please consider doing a series on natural hair; particularly kinkier, tighter curl patterns. While every head of hair is unique, "generic" information on the following would be very helpful: wash day routines, protective styles, how to deal with multiple textures on one head, regrowing damaged or missing edges, tips for retaining length, etc. If you have any clients with 4b/4c hair that would be willing to come on camera as "examples", that would be awesome! The Glamily thanks you in advance😃

    I was watching naturals relax their hair and your video showed in my next queue. I know this is an old video, but I think you should do an updated version. I see a lot of people going from natural to relaxed that need this information. I keep seeing incorrect relaxer application, I see people using combs to comb through the relaxer and all sorts of things. People really need to educate themselves before thinking that replacing their hair is going to solve all there problems.

    I haven't used a relaxer in almost 5 years now, everything you said is true. I would relax every 7-9 months, yes months. Back in the day my parent didn't think excessive use was a good idea. So she only relaxed us during the cold months (in North Florida that was only about 2/3 months of the year). No no no! Between those times you we did protective styles.
    If I ever go back *shrug* I'll do the same thing my mother did for us OR I'll do the same thing my mother dis for herself and just keep a low cut. Hair takes time and patience. And when you are busy busy? Do protective styles to keep you from neglecting it. Stay blessed folks!

    Wooooow I didn't even know about the caffeine thing. I've been natural for three years now and wanted to just try relaxed hair again the PROPER way. No self-hate or anything like that. My hair was flourishing back when I got it professionally relaxed and trimmed and I honestly miss it 😂. I've been watching soooo many videos on it to make sure I do it as properly as I can and not go bone straight like I used to be when I was younger and everything was broken off... *shivers* Thanks so much for this video! I'll definitely deep condition a lot. Any tips for a relaxer on thick, mostly 4c virgin hair?

  • @sweetytweety0011

    The video was very informative, my hair didn’t take well to relaxer (probably over processed as she would leave it in until my hair was straight at the root but textured at the ends smh) so I have only had it once before. In the UK, it isn’t a requirement to have any sort of certification before being able to work with people’s hair.
    I have a question; is it true that no one should be using box relaxers because the amount of activator per given amount of cream is different depending on the type of hair you have?

    • @GetGlamFam
      @GetGlamFam  7 років тому +1

      +Chloe I honestly don’t care for box relaxers, they leave calcium build up on the hair, I don’t even use professional 2 part relaxer systems for that same reason. If your Hair was straight at the scalp and curly at the ends, they applied your relaxer completely wrong, or way too slow, possibly both.

    Great and simple video, is love to see one with the truth about blowouts! It seems like the process changes and I'm wondering if it's different if you are natural vs relaxed
    I've also noted the Dominican blowout some say is too much heat for natural hair or they've had a relaxer mixed with the shampoo! 😩

    • @GetGlamFam
      @GetGlamFam  7 років тому +2

      +Georgina Opoku usually it’s not relaxer mixed with shampoo, it’s just a very large amount of heat and it permanently damages the hair. Unfortunately, too much heat breaks the same bonds in the hair that a relaxer does.

    Wow, this is great vide! I now know why I had so many challenges with my hair; I relaxed every 4 weeks (not just new growth but the full length of my hair). I followed that up with a nice session with the flat iron on high and smokey. When I decided to go natural I didn't attend the murder of my new growth with a new relaxer, I just stopped. I did a big chop about 3 months in and my new hair was amazing. I am now on my second adventure in the new growth movement and love my hair so much!

    My foolproof no burn system was wash to wash my hair a week before my appointment. The next next day I base my scalp with anti inflammatory cream. Then once more that week, and then the night before my relaxer. Then the morning of the relaxer I based my scalp with Vaseline. Took me nearly two decades to figure this out. Worked great. (However, the realization that I went through all of that to mitigate the pain from a relaxer probably means I shouldn’t have been relaxing.)

    Thank you Linwood for the info. I wish that my niece could have listened to a video like yours when she let her friend do her daughter's hair 4 years ago. She would leave the relaxer on her hair for 45 minutes every time that she did it. I found out about when I went to do her hair for her one day. When I left I literally cried because her hair had broke off badly due to overprocessing and it was hard as a rock. My twin sister Andrea and I took her under our wing and nursed her hair back to health. It took a year to grow it out and get it back healthy and my great niece Tyla was such a good sport. Now her has grown so much and I am so glad. :)

      Kelly Ford yes, I certainly have, the part about relaxers was true in terms of the chemical composition, and is definitely something people need to consider when doing relaxers. Without doing them correctly or being properly educated on them, you can do a massive degree of damage to the hair and scalp.

    The just for me kids hair relaxer damage my hair and also broke off between the new growth and relax hair. Before using the just for me I use to use gentle treatment in a jar already mix, but they stop selling the jar and now have it in a box. The one in the box you have to mix everything up wish I don't like cause you can not save the rest like the one in the jar but I can say I never had any problem with the gentle treatment relaxer at all.
