Does Heat Protectant Really Benefit Your Hair?

- I know I know, I must be crazy. Who wouldn't want to protect their hair from heat? "Linwood you done lost yo mind!" LOL well, I have a few very good reasons why I don't like heat protectant, and I'm here today to share them with you!
Now bear in mind, just because I don't like heat protectant doesn't mean that there is no way to protect your hair from heat. Don't worry, I'll share those tips with you as well in this video. In this video, I recommend what heat settings you should use on your hair, how to correctly use heat on your hair, and how to prevent damage to the hair through proper conditioning and routine.
Sure some of these tips are common sense, but I also give some healthy hair tips, as well as tips on determining what your hair texture is, versus what your coil pattern is.
I hope that this hair video is educational and interesting, and that it benefits you quite a bit. Thank you so much for watching, and you know I love you boo!
Stay Glam and happy Glamtober!

I never used to use heat protectant but I kept seeing online that it is necessary by hair professionals. I hate how you never know what is true and what is not.
My friend is a hairdresser with a license and she said I don't need heat protection because of the hydration I applied when I washed.
I'm so glad that you are tackling these subjects because of the misconceptions about heat damage and its related 'protectants'. The first time I decided to do a length check, I thought I was being sensible by going to a salon after being natural doe about three years. Well, that girl must have passed that flat iron it seemed like a hundred times over one section. I had to ask her to stop and then she uttered those immortal words 'Your hair is to thick'. I jumped out of that chair before she could do me more harm and left with my hard earned coins!! You know how I do my length check now? I get a ruler...it's a lot less damaging!!!
+Fay Samuel Lol definitely a lot less damage!
I’m so glad you got outta her chair cause she was definitely going to burn the shit out of your hair! Most women are too “nice” and won’t say or do anything to protect themselves at the risk of hurting the other person’s feelings. Lame!
I completely agree with you !! I stopped using heat protectant sprays for years but then i recently tried it twice, and both times my hair felt greasy while straightening, and dry/split ends after a wash. Thank goodness I knew something was up and threw it out.
Wow, this video is right on time. THANK YOU! The information about temperature settings based on hair characteristics is SO helpful! Blessings to you and yours!
Exactly hence the reason some youtubers got heat damage.....good thing for cosmo school....calling my thick afro textured hair coarse without understanding the real meaning of coarse was a huge misconception for me....keep doing what u are doing!!!!!!! :-)
+Simone Mark yeah I’m going to have to do a video breaking hair texture all the way down. There are so many misconceptions about hair texture.
Finally the answers I was looking for! Just got a long bob and I like how waves look, but I’m scared of damage and didn’t really know how heat protectant actually worked. Thanks for this!😊
I have fine hair with differing wave/curl patterns. Realized long ago my hair does not like heat. Said no to sulfates two years ago and have not turned back. Recently, I started to avoid any product with silicone. My hair is responding very well. My new stylist told me that I am doing a wonderful job caring for my curls. Thanks for your invaluable education!!!!
Your first reason sounds like the reason I once heard about why there where more accidents at traffic lights. People stop being cautious and looking left and right because they think the lights are making them safe.
To be honest, I was about to get the protectant myself, to use with high heat haha, I'll just stick with low heat and patience
Thank you putting out a very informative and simplistic video. I feel like this video really educated me! Much love❤️
I always roller set my hair, I really appreciate this education!!! Thank you so much!!!
My pleasure! Thanks so much for watching!
This video, single-handedly, saved my hair. I never understood why I would use a 400° or 410° degree heat and my hair would ALWAYS be damaged and a little looser. I have FINE Natural hair, that's why!! :D I needed to use much less heat (and also incorporate deep conditioning). I was able to actually silk press on 360 degree heat and i had NO DAMAGE!! :D That's so crazy. Thank you for sharing this knowledge! 😍😍😍
My joy! I’m so glad you found the video to be beneficial!
Me 2 why would someone use 400°
This information is so helpful for me because I was going to use a heat protector on my hair today. I don’t want to retain my growth from growing my natural hair. If you would, do a video on what product or products can be used if we want flat iron natural hair. I thank you for your expertise so much.
Awesome info!!! As a natural hair salon owner/stylist, I wish more stylist and clients understood hair texture. I have many very kinky but baby soft clients and loose curled/wavy resistant hair clients. Visuals only tell the pattern and density. Touching the hair and seeing how water reacts to it tells texture and porosity. Thanks again for sharing!
+Brownboy 1986 amen and amen! You said a mouthful! 🙌🏽
Thank you! I couldn’t figure out why the last couple of years when I straighten my hair it’s frizzy on the ends and it feels dry. Now I know when I started using heat protectant
I stumbled across one of your videos and immediately became a subby! U are amazing and VERY informative. I am a new natural hair stylist and your info has helped me so much to grow in knowledge and build my confidence as a new business owner. Thank you!
+Tiffany Dixon that is SO awesome! Thanks for your feedback and for subscribing! Welcome to the GlamFam and I am so glad that you are building your confidence! 🙌🏽
Thank you, Linwood! I'm just loving Glamtober 💜💜
+Nikki Royal yay! I’m so happy you are!
Love the video. Totally informative. It’s like you are reading my mind. Thank you for your help. Take care.🙏🏾💜🙏🏾
+Ruth Foxe that’s great! Thank you!
Thank you so much, I use to wonder why my hair never last long and straighten it. Now, that I know I will pass it along to my family and friends.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Soo much for sharing!! Always helpful and informative but make it simple enough to understand. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙏🏾
+Monebyrd thank you! My pleasure !
Extremely Helpful, as always!
This is the most informative video about straightening my daughters hair! 💯💯💯👑🤎🤎🤎 Thank you so very much!
Omg, I was late to this video but it was so vital to me. Thanks so much.
Great info 👍🏾. Could you please give photos of examples of what coarse hair versus kinky hair is? A visual would be so helpful . Thank you in advance 😀
+Laveyda Pearson I will do my best dear!
The strand width part. You've said what everyone on YT has been misunderstanding. Thank you.
+idontcarrotall my absolute pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Agree with you on all the reasons i don't like heat protection. My Hair instantly feels worse, even on low heat.
This information is so useful :-) I never knew exactly what heat range I should be in so that tip was especially helpful too me.
+Regina glad to help! 😊❤️
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Reaffirmed what I have learned and let me know I am on the right track. I also learned a few new things. Thanks.
How awesome! Thank you so much! Thanks for watching!
Linwood,
Thank you for your hair wisdom!
this man is so great
Thank you so very much!
I have been reluctant of heat protectant for a while all thought I use it I always felt my flat iron results could have been much better. But since everyone seemed to use it I felt like it must be required lol. Watching this video really confirmed my thoughts about it all along!! Thank you!😊
Thank you! And I was planning on straightening my hair today too lol
+Dinah Goins hopefully some of these tips will help you then! 😊👍🏽
Thank you so much for using clean language in your video. God bless you too
That was very helpful! I'm still somewhat of a novice with techniques, so I prefer to go to a professional for anything that involves direct heat. I feel the same way about trimming my hair. I don't trust myself to do it correctly. The challenge is finding a stylist that understands natural hair. Fortunately, I did find a great stylist. When she left the salon that she was working at, I tracked her down on social media.
+Katherine Miller smart thinking!
I haven't used heat, beside bonnet dryer for DC, in 3 years. My hair is grazing WL, I'm 6'2, and my curls are intact. I'm convinced that a rollerset and a "1 pass per section" flat iron is the only option for me. Why aren't more b eauticians using rollersets vs blow drying?
Mel S Yes!!! I finally found a natural hair stylist that can and will do a roller set and a silk wrap on natural hair. No direct heat is used, although I've seen some videos where the stylist used a flat iron after the silk wrap to get that super sleek look. But I'll pass on the flat iron. I'm not sure why a lot of stylists don't use these techniques. Perhaps they're too time consuming and "old-school" for them.
+Katherine Miller you hit the nail on the head. These days, putting a client under the dryer for potentially hours is nearly unheard of because so many clients want to be in and out, or hate the dryer altogether, and several stylists understand that in our industry, Time is money, and the dryer heavily impacts the temperature of the salon and the electric bill. So it’s frequently viewed as being pinned to the Salon longer, and losing money on top of losing money. Our culture these days is very much a microwave culture, rather than a slow cooker culture.
GlamFam and that's 1 of the many reasons why I've been doing my own hair for years. I'm convinced most beauticians have very little knowledge /patience/empathy for natural hair. I miss the wash bowl, the stimulating styling, the attention but I will just do without to maintain my hair's health. Damn I miss that wash bowl though.
Mel S I feel you on that wash bowl. It's nice to be pampered and have someone else shampoo your hair. But, I agree that we have to protect our strands!
Thank you! This was very informative, I will go forth with this new knowledge and conquer the world (of my own hair)!
Such a pleasure! I’m happy to help!
Brilliant video, keep them coming it is 8:00a.m. hadn’t got out of bed and I listening to October what did you call enjoying the video, pleas keeping feeding us knowledge. I appreciate so, much I would Love to take some classes with you. You’re so awesome!!!!!!☝🏿☝🏿☝🏿☝🏿☝🏿☝🏿☝🏿
+Shirley Hightower aww thank you! I’m so glad!
"Fire still burns" lolol. I stumbled upon Carol's daughter products by accident at ULTA (they no longer carry but amazon does) but their shampoo, conditioner and mask completely changed my hair and now it doesn't break anymore. I have curly Caucasian hair that I smooth out to soft bends rather than straighten.
I’ve heard that if you use a good deep conditioner you don’t need heat protectant.
Is that true?
@@jacquelinevasileva8446 It might. Heat damage is just dehydrated hair with not enough protein. If your hair lacks enough moisture and you apply heat to it you can end up damaging it. So in a way a solution would be to either have a protein treatment or deep conditioner the hair right before you apply heat. Idk if it can prevent heat damage completely but it'll atleast lower your chances of getting it. Hack: stretch your hair in big rollers before you apply heat. When the hair is already stretched you won't need to use high heat.
Thanks for this video. Learning so much from your channel.
Please do dandruff and scalp care! 🤗🤗😄
+yaya b I’ll add it to my list! 😊
Yes
@@GetGlamFam have you made the video I'm natural
I'm new 😊

+K love thank you!
GlamFam 😊✌
Thank you I appreciate the hair knowledge you share
Sensible talking! After all man, if u follow some of these people on UA-cam u go baldheaded. knowing Ur hair and using common sense is key. Thanks for this video Mr Glam.
My pleasure dear! Thanks so much!
Came across this video and it was very helpful. new subscriber
Thank you for this! Do you still feel this way or do you like any of the newer “heat protection” products??
Also, PLEASE help out us relaxed/permanently straightened ladies with some tips or videos. ❤️ Thank you, I love this channel!
Thanks for this info. Love your videos.
+dale underdue my pleasure! Thank you!
I'm in college and I don't want to really spend money on getting my hair trimmed. How would I go about trimming the hair as a beginner ?
I have always thought this way but most people would disagree with me, particularly hair stylists.
What would you recommend for the occasional blow dry? I mostly wear my hair in two-strands or individual braids and sometimes a fro in between styles. I don't usually blow dry my hair for these styles but I want to get cornrows/stitch braids. How should I got about blow drying my hair for that?
Thank you... Love your tips and education.
+Jackie Vann my pleasure! Thanks for watching!
WOW!! the company out there are going to be upset with you LOL!! but you are so right on!!
+jazzie cat lol or they could just formulate products that suit the intended purpose lol
What's your take on natural blow dry creams? I think they make my hair feel gunky! Thanks for sharing!!
I just forgot to buy heat protectant. Now I'm here☺️
I use Pantene Multi Tasking spray because it has a leave in conditioner. I have no problems with it. When I’m at the salon the stylist uses a Nairobi product.
Please review the Dyson Blow dryer and curling tools and do you think it's worth the price!!
Your videos are full of information that we need to keep our hair healthy. I'm natural and I have been seeing a product called New Options hair straightener. Can you give your opinion on that product. It's suppose to be safe to use on natural hair. You break down the chemistry part of the products so well. I love you boo😍. I'm praying blessings for your family.😇
+Rouchelle Perry I haven’t seen that product, but I’ll look it up!
GlamFam Thanks Linwood, you are the best!!!
Thank you another great informative video.
+Mokakes my pleasure!
Helpful information it's a lot I didn't know about heat protection thanks be blessed. And please do another video with mom please 😇 💞
+Marva Davis my pleasure! I’ll have to see if Mom is feeling up to it!
So is it okay to not have anything on your hair prior to blow drying?....If not what should I use?
You're amazing!!!! Is there any way you can do a video on how to help curly girls maintain their straight hairstyles during humid months? I met a lady in the "hair store" who was asking questions about controlling the frizz in her straightened state and no one mentioned moisture and porosity. I don't really think there is a sure-fire way to avoid frizziness but would love to have that information if there is a way!
+Shannan Fowler I’ll have to do a full on video on that because I have somewhat conflicting answers on it, but I’m totally down!
Looking forward to it! Will have a notepad in hand!! LOL! I've been really loving watching all the videos this month!!!! Planning to make my first wig this winter with a group of girlfriends using your new tutorial. Wish us luck!!! Best wishes!!!
+Shannan Fowler I am so happy you’ve been enjoying it! That sounds so fun for you and your friends to tackle it together! 😊
I love all of the myth busters addressed on this channel.
i love this man... thank you for the info
+Tnc874 thank you so much! My pleasure!
Great info as usual! 😀
+Princessa G thank you kindly!
I agree ...marketing ploy like everything else ...and yes I liked how you kept saying common sense lol...I just use a deep conditioner...
I usually air dry my hair which takes hours. When I do use a defuse with a hand held blow dryer, I use the warm setting. In other words, I can place my hand in front of the nossle for an extended amount of time without burning.
uuh, didnt know this !! thank you Linwood!!
+Jomi Bleau my pleasure! 😊❤️
Great video. Very informative 😄
+JaVonna Williams thank you!
Thank You for all that you do!!!!!
Thank You so much for this information. Take care and God bless.
+Evelyn Meyers my pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Hello, what about oils before using heat tools?
What are your recommendations for relaxed hair?
great video..really informative....btw...great shirt...compliments your skin tone...💋💋💋
+Regina Moore thank you very much dear!
Great video! Appreciate any info to protect my hair. I'd like to know is there any way to recover from heat damage WITHOUT cutting it off? Thanks
+Shelia Byers your best bet is a protein treatment, if you can gain any curl back, that will help. It usually won’t make your Hair completely turn back to your normal texture though. A lot of times, doing heat free styles and protective styles helps blend it while it grows so you don’t have to cut it off.
Yes. Tried a heat protector and did a silk press at home and it weighed my hair down.
This is good to know!
Loving that shirt!
I love that you're very informative
Can you go over some heat protectant so I don’t have those ingredients in there that are damaging so we know what to use
Teach em!! Yasssss for these cosmetology terms. Know your "fabric"! Soooo if you can try and review Paul Mitchell's Neuro Protect. Leaves great shine and no hold.
+knesmith23 I’m definitely open to trying it! I love their other products and I appreciate that the entire neuro line is supposed to be formulated with heat protection in mind!
Can you do a video/discussion on Protein treatment vs deep conditioning and how often/what products are best for kids and adults
+Melanie-Rae Cannady it’s on the way love 😊
Good points. Thank you
+Rozelia Armstrong my pleasure!
This is why I completely stopped using heat on my hair. Though I wish my hair was straight because my bangs are soooo curly.
Heat can definitely be bad if used to frequently or at too high of a temperature. Thanks for watching!
I agree..Thank for another great vid.Hey what brand flat it on would you recommend or swear by,I'm on a quest to purchase one and I'm overehelmed
+NJ CAMOCUTIE that will depend more on your hair type, I’ll try putting together a video that covers the details on all that.
AWESOME..Looking forward to it..I have very thick thick coarse hair..UGGG!!
I go no higher than 310°F. Thanks for the info.
What is a good leave-in to use?
Have you updated this? I’m still on the fence about it. I don’t feel like they help.
Can you do a video on rice water? I want to know if it really works.
what do you think about wet to dry flat irons? I wrote a damn essay about why I loved mine. then I realized I just wanted your opinion. lol. and anyone else who may have one...! I love all of this channels videos. Especially the chats!!!$
+Black Diamond I haven’t seen any wet to dry irons I’ve been impressed with honestly, I see if I can put together a detailed video for it. What do you love about yours, if you don’t mind me asking?
What About. Keratin? And Using Clear Haircolor
Definitely very informative, I needed this.
Can I use a hot curling iron on human hair WIG without putting on a heat protector
So no product before flat ironing? Just deep conditioning, blow drying and low heat setting?
Excellent. Thank you.
My joy! Thanks for watching!
I just use a very small amount if I use it just to add shine.
Great information
Thanks for the information
+Quinisha Harley my pleasure!
What’s the difference between thick and coarse hair???
Thanks for sharing great video
What can I use for hair protein
*Throwing away my 10 year old heat protectant I never used anyway.* It too greasy for me.
+Connie Lee I’m telling you! They can never get those things right! 😂
