I'd love to spend a week gathering herbs and preparing concoctions with you. Your knowledge is inspiring. Thank you for sharing it with us. Oh, and yes to the ear oil 😊
I'm working on an experimental Oil infusion. I mixed (Organic Unrefined Cold Pressed Oils) Avocado, Seasame, Olive, Castor, Coconut, Mango Butter, and Shea Butter and a bunch of Ayurvedic Herbs. I'm doing a 72 hour low heat infusion with a consistent temperature range of about 140-150 in the middle and so far its infusing better than I could have imagined.. My particular multi-cooker keeps it at a perfect 140-150 F range when its uncoverd on slow cook mode. Sheabutter can withstand up to 175 before it starts to oxidize so a consistant steady 140-150 seems to be a sweet spot for my particular oil blend infusion. Every few hours its slowy infusing love this herbal stuff. 😄

Hmmm....what if the herbs are freeze dried? I wonder how that impacts the loss of some medicinal properties having to do with water content? My understanding is that freeze drying preserves a lot more of what you're preserving compared to simply dehydrating...???
I have never worked with freeze dried herbs but that is my understanding as well... that it preserves a lot of the medicinal properties but no water! Certainly worth playing around with.
I don't do a lot of root infusions but I have used crampbark (which is a woodier part of the plant). If you are using dried, I would suggest trying to break it up if you can to release some of the compounds in the root before making an oil from it.
Hey there, wonderful video. I’m new to infusing oil, I plan to be infusing both Eucalyptus and Lemon Balm & Verbena in olive oil. My question is, I don’t have enough herb to warrant infusing a jar shown in the video, would it be safe to not fill the jar all the way and leave some empty space (about 1/2 the jar)? I plan to do two separate test runs of 1/2c Olive Oil + Eucalyptus and 1/2 Oil + Lemon Balm. I don’t want to cause the glass to shatter or anything, even though I doubt the warm setting on the IP could burst glass. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for taking the time to both watch my video and to leave a question/comment. I appreciate it! Personally, I do not like leaving a lot of headspace in a jar because that increases oxidation. So I would opt to use a smaller jar and fill it all the way. And I've used the IP on warm for years and years and never had an issue!
I love and agree with what you say about the potency of using fresh rather than dried herbs, but what I'm wondering is how can water evaporate off? I thought water always sunk to the bottom and the oil would create a surface barrier?
Yes at room temperature, but if you gently heat I have found that the water, for the most part, does evaporate off. There will always be a bit left over, which I then carefully decant the oil off, leaving the water at the bottom. Hope that makes sense.
If I already started the process of long infusions, can I take those dried herbs in oil and warm them like you showed in the slow cooker even after 10 days of sitting on the shelf? Thank you.
If I need the oil to make something else (a salve, face oil, body oil etc.) I will strain the herbs out right away. If the herbs are dried and I do not need them right away I will just leave them in the jar. IF I am using fresh herbs, I always strain them out after 4-6 weeks regardless if I need the oil or not to ensure my oil doesn't go rancid or moldy. Hope that helps!
@@SpiraeaHerbs so I gather it's ok to gently heat infuse the herbal oil and let it sit and infuse for a few weeks before straining it without risk of the oil going rancid... Great video, very interested in what you do. Subscribed❤

I cover the method in a variety of videos. Like this one about Calendula: ua-cam.com/video/g96JvjzIKhU/v-deo.html Generally speaking its pretty easy, you just let the herbs sit in the oil. If you are using fresh do you have to check on them and find a method for decanting/evaporating some of the water content off. If you are using dried you just need to wait :) Let me know if you have any further questions or if I can guide you further.
What can you use dried rosehips for? I prefer to use them fresh but they literally dried up in my fridge over winter😂 Silly me that's what you're using in the video...is a handful enough?

Thank you! I am making a fresh plantain and yarrow infusion with avocado oil, I'm trying it in the dehydrator. Since I also have some herbs in there that I'm drying I have it set at 100. I was thinking it would be a good way to help some of the water to evaporate while keeping the integrity of the herbs, Once I take the dehydrated herbs out, what temp do you think I should turn the dehydrator to to expedite the infusion?
