  • UPDATE - In this review I forget to mention that the NeoSD has a Jukebox function that is accessed by pressing start on the "Launch Current Game" option at the top of the menu screen.
    I have since updated my Neo Geo ROM set to include every game (Not including bootlegs and hacks) which brings the total memory size up to 4.5GB. Twice as what I stated in the video. Sorry about that.

    This kinda made me realize that the NeoSD really should let you play music while it loads. Maybe have a mini-player with Jukebox selections from the game thatMs loading.

    Nice job with the review Mark.
    I remember the days when such a product was simply a Pipedream..
    I've been considering getting an AES version for a long while now, but I keep holding out.
    Maybe this Xmas I will treat myself to one. I also see there is a Pro model of the NeoSD.
    According to them, it now has 3072 megs of flash storage (up from 768), 4 flash slots (up from 1), + 1 high speed RAM slot. Its up to 25% faster at loading roms to flash slots, and up to 500%+ faster when flashing to to the RAM slot. Having 5 game slots would be neat.
    I'm used to playing the old 90's console copiers so loading doesn't really bother me very much.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 років тому

      Yeah, hold on out for the Pro version if the extras are something you think will be needed. I doubt it will be cheap though. I'm not too fussed on the loading side of things so I went for this version as it's not cheaper than it once was.

    Wanted to add in my two cents after having owned a NeoSD for about two years myself:
    The device itself is on the pricier end, yes, but in doing a search on eBay for three titles that I'd pick up the actual MVS carts of (Garou, The Last Blade 1 & 2) the price of all three combined would be more expensive ($465 before shipping) than purchasing this single device that would allow every licensed Neo Geo title available to be played provided you have the correct ROM sets. It even works with the Crossed Swords 2 MVS conversion Razoola did a few years back!
    Some of the comments on this video complained about how the load times for AoF3 were outrageous, and it does tend to get worse with the larger sized games. KoF 2003 takes over three minutes to flash! But the way this device works is that it's not just flashing a few memory banks, it's having to flash two FPGAs into thinking that it's running those same ROM chips that would be found on an actual MVS board, which is why the Arcade Mode option works so well. Knowing the prices of some of these games out in the wild, I'm willing to bet that it would be overall cheaper to purchase a NeoSD and only have it flashed with a specific game set in arcade mode and do that for the entirety of the Neo Geo library than it would be to collect every last authentic MVS cartridge.
    Lastly, while there are several multi-cart solutions that are out there that are far more cost effective, keep in mind that this is the first publicly available Neo Geo flash cart that's on the market, and that for a first go at it, it does a remarkable job at what it can do. TerraOnion is already working on a PRO model of the NeoSD that not only ups the storage to be able to hold four simultaneous flashed games on the device, the device itself will also be able to flash those games faster. Those 4 ROM banks would also be able to be cycled through as if you were playing a 4-Slot MVS! Better yet, there's even a 5th slot that is backed by flashable RAM instead of the FPGAs, so while it won't be able to retain a game after power down, the flash times would be even faster. As the PRO for the MVS and AES are still in development, I wouldn't be surprised if it cost double what this device is currently being offered for, but with those added features it'd be very tempting to pick up.

    Excellent review on the NeoSD Mark.
    I love this device, it's worth investing into one since it help reduce the MVS and AES cost of collecting for the Neo-Geo. Yes, the physical concerns on the carts to exist. In fact, I was dissatisfied when NGDEVTEAM 2nd print of Gunlord that had these horrible replica carts for the AES that really was disappointing....But thankfully, they fixed the issues.
    Also. Thank you for posting this on the Neo-Geo thread on Atariage.com Mark. Really appreciate it and thank you for what you do for us as usual. Keep it up bro. 8^)

    • @worsel555
      @worsel555 6 років тому +2

      But still every time you want to switch a game you have to wait for it to erase and then reflash the new game, for me that is a huge deal breaker on top of the price. I have a multicart 150 in 1 that works just fine, I will stick with that.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 років тому +1

      Those multi carts have issues. I own two myself. The 161 in 1 and the 130 in 1. Both are not perfect and full of crappy Chinese hacks.
      The loading is a bummer but as you saw with Nam 1975, not all games take a minute and a half to load. Plus it's just a one off loading.

    • @Tempora158
      @Tempora158 6 років тому +1

      Play a couple of rounds of AOF3 on the NeoGeo CD and you would have experienced FAR more load time than three minutes. And the CD port has tiny character sprites for the privilege.

    I have the AES version of this cart and it's the best investment (retro gaming wise) I've ever done. Please don't compare this to the crappy Chinese 161-in-1 carts which are full of hacks. NeoSD gives me the full Neo Geo set on my AES (yes including all the MVS games and stuff like Ironclad). It's brilliant. You are stupid if you are complaining about the flashing times.

    Quick retro core! Lol I need an answer to this long asked question, I have both ports of the only Melty Blood games to be resealed on the PS2 and I know they were Sega Naomi arcade games to start out with and the PS2 has no Sega Naomi hardware in it at all so that must have had to port the games from the ground up on the PS2, so are the ports on the PS2 arcade perfect do you think ? I mean there all 2D no 3D was required for the PS2 to render, and from what I heard the PS2 was great at handling 2D arcade fighting games

  • @BlockABoots

    Is it just better to get a multicart rather than this then, loads the games quicker and cheaper to buy?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 років тому +1

      The multicart is cheaper but none of them contain all the games and the heavy focus on the crappy Chinese hacks. They also have issues with corrupt graphics, missing sound and other problems. This flash cart is 100% perfect. I do own 2 multi carts for the Neo Geo but will be selling both of them.

    whats up, bro. i remember you lol. anyways, ive never owned a NEO GEO, so im looking to get a neo geo AES or MVS with a NeoSD for either one. not sure yet which one to get yet between an actual AES console or a consolized MVS aka CBOX. this all leads to important questions before i decide to spend the heavy money.
    my questions are...
    1. if i decide to get an Neo Geo AES system with a NeoSD AES, will i be able to switch from AES and MVS mode, or does that only work on an MVS system? (I wasnt sure if the NeoSD AES version had that option)
    2. So does the BACKUP RAM SAVE work like a neo geo memory card? does it save high scores, settings, and where I left off in the game?
    3. is it true that some games have differences depending on if you choose AES or MVS mode?
    4. does the UNIBIOS in the MVS CBOX conflict with the UNIBIOS on the NeoSD?
    5. whats the difference between the unibios on the MVS Cbox system vs the NeoSD unibios?
    6. i guess when it comes down to it, im looking for the best option to be able to play both AES and MVS versions of a game and be able to switch regions. would you recommend the MVS CBOX to achieve this or an AES system, or does it not matter?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  5 років тому +1

      In answer to your questions 😁.
      1. Yes. The SD carc allows you use choose AES or MVS on any Neo Geo hardware.
      2. It will save high scores and places in a game if the game offers that feature.
      3. Yes.
      4. Nope, not at all. In fact the bios in the Neo SD takes priority.
      5. Nothing. They both do the same thing.
      6. It doesn't really matter but if price is a concern then the MVS rout is best. Even the Neo SD MVS version is cheaper than the AES version. Everything connected to the AES cost more.

    • @kjmullinz
      @kjmullinz 5 років тому

      @@RetroCore thanks for the answers! So basically, I wont be needing a MEMORY CARD, because the NEOSD can save where we left off in games along with high scores, and both versions of the NEOSD do the same exact thing, but just made for two different systems. ... Is all this correct, bro?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  5 років тому

      Ah, sorry. I thought you were talking about the CBOX. As long as your MVS has an internal battery and memory you'll be fine. The Neo SD doesn't save data.

    • @kjmullinz
      @kjmullinz 5 років тому

      @@RetroCore are you positive it doesn't save data? I emailed stoneagegamer.com with that same question for reassurance. They said it does save games to the SD card. To be sure, you should try testing it to see if it can. So we all know for sure. 👍
      Also, it was my understanding that the CBOX havs the batteries removed from the board. Which means it can't be saved unless it's modded. Isn't this correct?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  5 років тому

      Hmm, okay, looking at the SD cart it does have an always save option so I guess it is saving data such as high scores and so on to the SD cart just like an everdrive does. The one way I can confirm is if there is save data on the SD card. I'll check when I get home.

    No Sengoku 3?
    Try and load Garou, which is relevant, because it is the best game by far IMHO
    I don't understand why you don't count the erasing as well. It should be the total amount of time that you need to wait, regardless of what it is telling you what it is doing.
    I will never get a flashcart that loads so long, I do not see why it has to take so long

      Sengoku 3 is on there now. I updated the rom set to a 100% complete set minus the crappy Chinese hacks two days ago.

      oh the stoneage version is only £360, might get that instead just for the quality and box

      If you go for the stone age gamer version you may be better buying an SD card from amazon. Much cheaper.

    Hey mark. I bought a Custom clear Shell from lions3 for my NeoSD. It wasn't cheap to post it either. Amazing video as usual.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 років тому +2

      A custom shell sounds cool. I may just buy a really cheap MVS game like Fatal Fury, gut it and make a custom shell out of that.

      That's a nice custom case. I like how it's easy to see the board inside of the cartridge.

    i would go Rpie or 161in1 just because of the loading time! it seams worse than the neo geo CD

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 років тому

      It's not worse than a Neo CD plus a Neo CD is always loading. This you only load once at the beginning.

      ok, still... i can't stand such a long wait when i can either emulate instantly or just plug the real game instantly. ^__^;

    What is the white console you inserted the mvs cart into, and where do I get one ?
    Does the Sd card come preloaded with Rom’s ?

      you have to load those yourself, usually.

      Rob Toohey thanks for the info, do you have any idea what is that white mvs console ?

    • @Retro_Royal
      @Retro_Royal 6 років тому +2

      Look in his playlist, it is a MVS from China - comes for a good price and by now is a evolved product. (Stereo mod included by now).
      Check aliexpress and search for MVS, you will find what you are looking for.

    wow.... buy a flashcard in order to have the same loading time like, say... the neo cd.... Nice !
    Next time : copycat the loading like from a.... floppy disk.... really more fun!
    It sounds like a waste of money for me.... of course If you like to pirate the full set of the neo geo, it's very practical.... but expansive, I must say !!

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  3 роки тому

      Err, have you ever used a Neo Geo CD? It loads all of the time. The Neo SD loads once. Once the game is in memory it stays there. No more loading.

    • @TheFrenchy82
      @TheFrenchy82 3 роки тому

      @@RetroCore Yep ! I know the neo geo CD (I'm not even talking about the neo cdZ which was faster).
      The funny thing here, is that you have a cartridge but.... you have to support loading times (ok one time , each time you you change the game).
      I know that the "answer" to this problem from Terraonion is the new model "pro" REALLY more expensive but more practical. You can "emulate" like a MVS system with multi slots + a faster ram bank.
      Don't worry I also pirated games and used emulators. I always thought that people who use REAL hardware were a little bit hypocrite, when they use flashcards. Don't worry, I did this , so I know the feeling....
      But who cares anyway , those games are VERY old.
      10 years or 15 years later , video games are for most of the players in the "public domain"... (it's obviously not true ..).
      No hard feeling...Have a good one with your NeoSD MVS !

    I'd love to have a NeoGeo but wowee is it expensive to get into. I'll stick with my RetroPie for now.

  • @SameNameDifferentGame

    So it's the settings on the UniBIOS, not the NeoSD that determines if it's the MVS or AES version you're playing, correct?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 років тому +1

      I use the Uni Bios but the cartridge can also do that. You'll notice on my cart the region and console /Arcade option are not available because I'm using the Uni Bios.

    • @SameNameDifferentGame
      @SameNameDifferentGame 6 років тому

      Cool. Thanks! Also, will this load stuff like Crossed Swords 2 that was only on Neo-Geo CD, or does that not work?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 років тому +1

      It should but the software to compile the files for the flash card may not recognise it. I tried to load up a Neo CD converted Mahjong game but the graphics were all messed up.

    not a good idea
    500$ ripoff! stoneage thieves....just get the 168 and 1 for 100 or 80 $...
    this is not a OFFICIAL AES game CARTRIDGE.....is a flashcard like the everdrive

    • @ia3525
      @ia3525 6 років тому +2

      xtreme gold the cost comes from emulating the chipsets. It gives you pure hardware authentication. And if you don't see the issues with the 160 in one cart then you have no business talking :)

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 років тому

      We know it's not an official Neo Geo cart and I wouldn't recommend buying from Stoneage Gamer unless you want the case and so on. But from Terraonion. It's much cheaper.
      I also own two multi carts for the Neo Geo MVS but they have issues and are filled with crappy Chinese hacks and not to mention missing a load of games.

    • @vasili1207
      @vasili1207 6 років тому

      It's not a rip off per say it's expensive but not expensive , when I sold my collection I sold metal slug 3 for £1500 for the Aes in 2007-8 ish and that was cheap then , I dont want to think how much it goes for now, but here is the kicker I paid only £500 for it in 2005. It's 2018 and I pay that price for one of them carts.
      The "" in ones are cheap and cheerful but also emulated I think
