My fave singer songwriter ever . I think if doll by doll had been around earlier like late 60s they would be revered as much as love they were a band out of time. Saw them , and supported them , also put Jackie on several times solo too, I own everything he's ever done , the album he made as John St field called control is wonderful too. RIP Jackie you are sorely missed ❤
Great commentary on a marvellous band. Thank you. I saw them live several times. The old cavern club in Liverpool, Camden Lock, in London among them. Their Impact live on stage was immense. Joe Shaw was a great guitarist and accompanying vocalist.
Thank you! I never had the opportunity to see them.... not even sure if they ever played Southern Caifornia! But thank you for taking the time to watch the video and comment!
Doll by Doll played gigs in Europe, but I don't think made Southern Calfornia. Joe Shaw, subsequent to Doll by Doll, played for the Pretty Things and toured Europe with them. Joe led a special tribute to Jackie Leven night, fronting a re-formed band in North London a year after Jackie died. He still plays occasional gigs. He has latterly managed to combine his engineering background and his music and has helped install recording studios for many other artists in many countries around the world ( and including California ). He now works freelance on the technical side in Mark Knopfler's British Grove recording studios in London. He has recently helped to restore the mixing desk that was used to record the Beatles album Abbey Road. This recently was put up for sale by auction at Bonhams. Fascinating career.@@StephenSchnee
@@willbalshuc13 Wow! That is all fascinating information for sure! Thanks for the update. I'll actually search for info on him! But yeah, still love this band to this day. Pretty timeless stuff
Love Doll by Doll. Started with the immense Remember LP and the Palace of Love single. Gypsy Blood is incredible as well. Met Jackie, Jo and Dave McIntosh in 2008 after a Jackie solo show in a tiny room. They played a couple of tunes together…the closest to a DBD reunion, as they said. Great time and Jackie was truly larger than life…miss him dearly
I discovered Doll By Doll only through the later Jackie Leven. There are really great songs, but the later Jackie Leven is more my kind of music. But thank you, Stephen, for the love and affection you show in your introduction.
Fantastic band. I only saw them once but Gypsy Blood was an important album to me. Saw Jackie Leven as a solo artist several times and in a collaboration with David Thomas, they did an album together, Creatures Of Light & Darkness. I believe there's also some work of theirs on Bandcamp under the name UbuDoll. I was completely unaware of Grand Passion.
Hi Stephen. Many thanks for uploading. I first saw Doll By Doll in 1978/79 in Glasgow City Halls. Absolutely terrifying. They instantly became my favourite band. Saw them many times after that in a range of venues. Always brilliant.
Hi friend. Just subbed to your fab channel. So pleased you love Doll by Doll. Lookin forward to other great reviews of other fave artists. Passionate insightful commentaries😁! God bless you sir.
One of the most intense live bands i have ever experienced. Gypsy Blood, like you say Stephen is immense. Thank you so much for taking the time to bring attention to this great band and the massive talent of Jackie and his music.
I never had the pleasure of seeing them live. I'm not even sure if they ever made it to the States to tour! And thank YOU for taking the time, Peter. I actually just posted Part 2, which focuses on his solo releases!
Forgot to mention that you should check out the Revenge of Memory live 1977 disc on Cooking Vinyl. A bit rough sound, but has the energy of the young and up and coming band.
Remember, was the first album I bought by them and I was blown away by it...Butcher Boy hooked me immediately...Gypsy Blood ...was the next one I heard...some critics compare it to the self titled album by Clear Light, but I never heard that myself.
Hey Stephen, one of the great things about being human is that we are all different and we don't all like the same things. We all listen with different ears and that makes us all unique. Take care...
Saw them many times. One of a kind. Reminded me of Spirit at times. Jackie Leven was attacked in the street. They jumped on his throat. He lost that falsetto register.
Gypsy Blood is one of my favourite albums ever. It's great to hear someone else enthusing about it.
So happy that I've been discovering more Jackie/Doll by Doll fans out there since I made the two videos!

'Gypsy Blood, the best album you've never heard'.
a brilliant album indeed! But you already knew that!
Such a great band! So underrated.
I wholeheartedly agree!

Great video. Am going to a Leven Memorial in London soon. ONE small criticism - how can you not include Bright Green Field?
Sadly, I don't know what Bright Green Field is!
Last track on Doll by Doll 3rd.
@@paulblack2390 Duh! Sorry 'bout that!
No worries. Really enjoyed both parts of your video. Your "punishment". Listen to Bright Green Field!
