Great to see the Big Man getting some love from across the water - hell of a life and hell of a talent! The album with Ian Rankin came about when Rankin, author of the Rebus books, misheard the lyric from "Standing in Another Man's Rain" as "Standing in another man's Grave" and made that the title of a Rebus novel. The rest is history as they say. Personally I love songs like Poortoun which portays his early life here in Scotland and recreates the dreamlike dead-memory landscape of Scotland in that time. My wife always knows when I'm in one of "those" moods when Jackie starts playing in the background. Rest easy Big Man.
Only managed to see Jackie perform once, but it was a beautiful show. He recorded a BBC Radio 1 session around the time Grand Passion came out and performed a song called Enchanted, which, to the best of my knowledge, never made it on to an album - a huge shame since it was a fabulous song. I believe a fifth DBD studio album was recorded but never released.
A daunting back catalogue for sure, and covered very well and obviously from the heart. Jackie was a great musician and songwriter and his voice was wonderful even if he didn't have quite the astonishing range he had in the Doll by Doll years after the attack which left him not being able to sing at all for a couple of years and consequently led to his addiction. His live performances were wonderfully intimate and rewarding events with not only the great music but fantastic story telling with a great degree of humour. Was lucky enough to be at a couple of Doll by Doll reunions in the early 2000's and was also at one of the few CBI gigs with Jo Shaw, Davie McIntosh and Glen Matlock. Excellent vid which will no doubt have me revisiting his music and checking out the one's i've missed out on. Cheers Stephen.
Thanks for this! I am a big Jackie Leven fan and I think he was the most underrated, overlooked musician in music history. Some great songs in the medley I had missed! thanks so much
I did not know there was more than one Sir Vincent Lone album. I'll have to check those out. I like basically everything I've heard from him, but for my money the peak is the run from "Creatures" to "Oh What a Blow" - that's a run of absolute slam dunks that few artists can claim. He blended and transcended genre so perfectly I'm really surprised he's not better known.
Hey Steven, I must admit that I enjoyed the solo mix that you played much more than the Band stuff from the last video. He is a bit unique. Take care...
Thank you, Tam. I felt I was pretty alone here in America liking the band when they were relatively new. It still feels that way here in the US, but the Internet brings fans a lot closer together
The mystery of Love it is then! 🙂🔥The Garden.! He replied to my letter in 1994. Can i cover it i asked? yes you can cover it he said. How could i cover that classic? I thought!... Saw him in Clwb Ifor Bach in 95. He was my best mate. Although I'd never met him. A single father. Take care now friend. 👍
My fave singer sonwriter ever .

One of the greats. An inspiration.
I'm so happy that Jackie still has so many fans and supporters out there!

Thanks for this I had never heard of chip pan fire
I was hoping for maybe a sing song or two, but it is Jackie, so I can't complain. Oh, and I didn't discover it until years later myself!
Jackie Leven collaborated with David Thomas of Pere Ubu that I need to hear...
Great video! Never heard of him...sorry to say. But I enjoyed the samples! Going backwards, onto part 1. Cheers Matt
He's so great. And let's be honest, we can't listen to everything! So, that is why we share our love of music with one another!

Jackie is so underrated. Such a talent that left us far too soon!
