First of all I love this movie because: Toshiro.
However I agree with almost every single one of your points. Rangiku matsumoto fought against her childhood friend (andmaybeloveinterest?) to protect her Captain and he never showed her the same loyalty? There were so many out of character moments for Toshiro, including attacking Ichigo... and so much unexplained. I don't see this movie as canon at all but it will always hold a special place in my heart because we got to see so much Toshiro in it hahaha I wish they'd done it right though...

He wanted to experience this pain alone.without involving those he cared for ,like rangiku.he whole heartedly told rangiku thank you for everything in that grave yard scene.him fighting ichigo was him trying to push ichigo away.besides ichigo has always been so hard headed and he doesn't listen to toshiro anyways so that was totally not out of character.why didn't anyone find it strange when byakuya literally did exactly what shiro did so that he could protect his pride and defeat koga 1 v1,once and for all.so yes ,toshiro did show rangiku the loyalty.its just there are some personal wounds that come back to hurt you,but you don't want to get the ones you love involved.you see how he responded to her after she brought back his garb and still accepted him.I can say without a doubt that apart from hinamori ,toshiro does not care about anyone else as much as he does rangiku.he even trusts her more.

Hitsugaya was constantly incredibly popular in Japan, it's what I always assumed the movie was made for. Fanservice basically which would explain the mess that was having the same zanpakuto, as it's in the manga that there would never be such a thing happening. I always found memories of nobody so bittersweet and nostalgic and Fade to Black as fanservice as well. It had very calculated cry moments and Rukia was also always very popular.

What buggs me the most about this movie is how the portroyal of the sword makes no sense and contradicts the series.
In the rest of Bleach it was made abundantly clear that each Shinigami is given an Asauchi (I think that's the right word) - basically a blank Zanpakuto - that will then bond and evolve alongside it's owner. And the power that those swords have are really the person's power, imbued into the sword.
In this movie however, Hizugaya somehow found his Zanpakuto... as well as a second person.
It outright contradicts the series by having an independant Zanpakuto exist in the first place and then it contradicts itself by having two instances of the same supposedly unique sword exist at the same time.
Also that this single sword would be so important that not only did the very government of the Soul Society hold an entire meeting only about it, but also established standing rules on how to handle it is just laughable. Sure it's powerful, but if any of the top Captains got their act together they could just rofl-stomp all over Hyorinmaru, especially the Head Captain Yamamoto....

I think all the movies are supposed to be non-canon therefore the logic of the series will not be applied to them. However, if I HAVE TO explain this, it may simply means that Hyourinmaru was too powerful and therefore its Spritiual Energy affects people around it aswell forming a duplicate zanpakuto and therefore the Central 46 later decided that Hitsugaya is the "rightful" owner of the sword and perform the execution of Kusaka

This movie could have been great if the focus remained on a smaller more personal story about Hitsugaya and the people close to him. Namely Rangiku should've had a bigger role instead of just sitting around under house arrest. When this movie was coming out Kubo made a canonical origin chapter for Hitsugaya that reveals it was Rangiku who convinced him to become a shinigami so the set up for a movie emphasizing their relationship is already there. Plus the look Hitsugaya gives her at the start before he bails on the squad mirrors the one Gin gave Rangiku when he left with Aizen so even more wasted potential on showing how much she's had to deal with the people close to her abandoning her like that(+1 more if you count Isshin).

  • @wyverneify

What made me angry with this movie is that it says that Hitsugaya obtained his power during his scholarship at Shinigami school, although in the manga and anime, it is said that Hyorinmaru appeared to him when he was a kid living in the Rukongai with his grandma... It makes no sense, and makes me feel like Hirsugaya is a kind of impostor, illegitimate to the role of captain. It is sad. That is why this story will never be part of the canon for me.

Well I do love Toshiro Hitsugaya he is my favorite character I do see the flaws in the movie, Toshiro isn't being like the same person he is in the series/manga but I can see him having a bunch of emotions and not being able to deal with them properly, he is at the end of the day a very young captain/shinigami who will sometimes make stupid decisions because /he/ feels they are right.
I did want him to accept the help from others it was sad to see him go about this struggle alone but I can still see why he did. I don't think the head captain choices were extreme considering the stuff with Rukia who also was considered a traitor because she gave her powers to someone to battle when she clearly could not. The soul society was always over the top with the rules and if you break one you may have execution on your head .

What I love most about your review is that you’re fair and honest. As much as I genuinely enjoy this movie, you've neatly organized every problem I had with it, I think the most unforgivable thing is that Ichigo dealt the finishing blow.
A theory that I have is that the twin Hyōrinmaru is the result of Toshiro's immense and uncontrolled reiatsu overflowing and seeping into Kusaka's inner world due to the close bond they share and how much time they spend together. In the movie, Kusaka is Toshiro's only friend at the academy and is one of the few people to be able to really connect with him on a personal level.
This is also just speculation but I feel that Kusaka is actually a very passive person and is easily influenced by the people he trusts. Since Toshiro is the person he's closest to, Kusaka doesn't perceive the foreign reiatsu as a threat and he subconsciously allows his inner world to be frozen over and because of that, his true Zanpakutō never properly develops.
The Hyōrinmaru that Kusaka manifests is essentially a perfect replica and in a way, is as equally powerful and genuine as Toshiro's but due to the circumstances and the fact that its very existence is actively suppressing Kusaka's true Zanpakutō, it's actually quite a severe hindrance and is most likely the reason he can’t use Bankai. I think it also had a negative effect on his psyche because he seemed to become slightly unstable mentally and emotionally after it appeared.

As a huuuuge Toshiro fan I hated this movie when I rewatched it. It had so much potential but they did it so bad.
First of all, imo Toshiro wouldn't be such a jerk about it, at the very least to Rangiku. This movie happens during the Arrancar arc right? As a captain, even while emotionally unstable, he should've and would've usually thought about his squad first. Also, we know him and Rangiku are really close for captain and lieutenant, so he'd probably feel bad for her because Gin always left her without telling her where he's going. Isshin also left the both of them without even knowing himself it would be the last time he'd see them, so I don't think Toshiro would abandon her so easily because he knows the pain it would cause. The same could also be said for Hinamori being left by Aizen, though I think at this point she was still in a coma, so wouldn't have been involved anyway.
Speaking of Rangiku, I definitely agree with other comments saying that she should have been involved as much as, if not more, than Ichigo. I get that he's the main character but this video was right about Ichigo being shoehorned in since this was at a point in time where Ichigo and Toshiro weren't even as close as they become. Rangiku would have been able to help Toshiro more and she's got to be the one person he wouldn't feel too embarrassed to rely on.
More recent light novels like Can't Fear Your Own World and Spirits Are Forever With You show that ichigo doesn't even have to be involved in the plot. This film could have made so much more sense if it was set or at least conceptualised after the manga ended (I know that would be way too late but...) since it would be more likely that we get an explanation of how kusaka also got Hyorinmaru because of the Asauchi. Imo I think that a decent explanation would have been something like Toshiro's spiritual pressure being so large that it affected and created a copy of hyorinmaru using kusaka's asauchi. This would make sense as to why kusaka saw Hyorinmaru at the exact same time Toshiro did, when Toshiro's been having visions of Hyorinmaru way before he even enrolled into the academy (I think that's canon because I saw manga panels for it, so it wasn't just in the zanpakuto filler arc). It would also explain why Central 46 decided to make them fight each other: either way, they would kill off kusaka since it's actually Toshiro who's the rightful owner of Hyorinmaru. That would also add another dimension to his guilt and more character development as he would feel that if he had better control of his reiatsu in the first place, they wouldn't even had to have fought in the first place, so kusaka wouldn't have to have died. But no, of course that much thought wasn't put in so we just get 95 minutes of toshiro being an insensitive douchebag when imo he would never do something like that. This film made toshiro look so bad that now I'm happy about ichigo punching some sense into him, even tho he's my fav 😂
And then if someone could explain how this makes sense: how the hell did kusaka come back to life in the first place? Do they explain it in the film? Haven't watched it for for while. They probably don't tbh.
I know that the Diamond Dust rebellion came out quite a bit before, but the premise really reminds me of Captain America: Winter Soldier, which was done a million billion times better than Diamond Dust was. It probably sounds dumb, but I think the character's are similar, with Toshiro like Cap and kusaka like bucky/winter soldier. Diamond dust could've worked out without Ichigo involved and Toshiro on the run if it played out not identically, but in a similar way to Winter Soldier. Maybe if Toshiro didn't know or denied that the Reiatsu he felt was kusaka, he would've come back with Rangiku and the whole story could've been way more interesting. Rangiku's role could've been like natasha with Cap in Winter Soldier. Maybe kusaka frames toshiro once they're back in soul society by, idk killing a bunch of normal shinigami, maybe low ranking seated officers as well (because i dont think he should be able to incapacitate any other captains like he did to kyoraku-next paragraph talks about that) the only person who supports toshiro is rangiku, so she goes on the run with toshiro to find out the truth instead of just staying in house arrest the whole time. We could've gotten a really cool reveal scene as well like when Cap realises winter soldier is bucky (obviously not in the same way).
Also i agree in that kusaka should not have been able to defeat kyoraku out of all people. Hyorinmaru is an incredibly strong zanpakto but how is kusaka, a guy who probably had less than a week with this zanpakuto that probably wasn't even his in the first place (going along with the overwhelming reiatsu theory), beating one of the oldest and strongest captains (definitely during the arrancar arc) in less than two minutes? Like the video says, the ouin wasn't even activated, so that excuse isn't even valid. If toshiro isn't on par with kyoraku at that point even in bankai, kusaka shouldn't have been able to one shot kyoraku in shikai, even if kyoraku was so shocked about seeing some dead guy he had only just read about (like the video says).
We also should have gotten a tinyyy flashback as to why and how kusaka teamed up with two arrancar girls in the first place. Who are they? Why are they so loyal to kusaka? It just doesn't make sense. This is probably just me, but why the heck would you transport something as important and powerful as the ouin after a guy like aizen betrayed and stole the hogyokyu, which works in a similar way to the ouin? Is there not fear of aizen somehow stealing the ouin as well, especially since it was being transported in the world of the living.
Overall, I think this movie could have been so much better if it was made a lot later and if:
    A) Toshiro was less of of a jerk and involved rangiku at least (the person I'd say changed his world after telling him to be a shinigami)
    B) Not shoehorning ichigo in, maybe by setting the film after aizen's defeat like with spirits are forever with you, which is why I think it would have been better if made towards the end of the anime
    C) Plot holes explanations, another reason why it should have been done later: we would've gotten a solid explanation about how kusaka got hyorinmaru since kubo himself would have at least thought about asauchi and how that whole concept would work in this film.
Huge factors into why I will never see this film as canon, unlike memories of nobody because of the valley of screams shown in CFYOW
It's just so sad at the lost potential here. They butchered my guy! What annoys me the most is how he left things with rangiku, he doesn't show it much but he really cares for her. Even in thousand year blood war (spoiler alert?) Before he 'dies' his main priority is to save and help a 'dying' rangiku.
If you didn't like this film for the storyline, I don't blame you. If you didn't like it because it's about toshiro, cool because everyone has their own opinions! Either way, it could've been done a million times better.
TL;DR good concept, poorly portrayed, characters poorly depicted. Sorry for such a long, probably unnecessary read, just needed to go on a rant 😂 don't mind if no one reads this tbh
I'm just happy the anime's coming back so I can see everyone (including toshiro obviously-new bankai kusaka and this film will never lay its hands on!) being bad ass for one last time!

Well before I share my opinion I would like to start by saying that "Diamond Dust" is a meteorological phenomenon where tiny shards of crystal-like ice forms and is picked up by the wind and appears like shards of diamonds floating through the sky. Hence the name.
Personally I think the worst is Hell Verse. That movie is just standard "TV show based Anime movie" and just goes through the motions without much ambition. Like watch the DBZ, Naruto or the 1st and 4th Inuyasha movies and you'll get what I mean. It's like the people making that movie had some kind of anime cliche quota to meet.
Plus the attempt of a surprise villian was kinda pathetic, I mean he's trapped in hell for a reason, how am I supposed to be shocked that someone sent to hell is not a good person.
Perhaps it's just me but I prefer a movie that tries and fails to do something interesting than a product that just goes the motions.

Î will have to disagree with the last part. Hell in Bleach has not been established to be a place for evil human beings. It was established to be the afterlife for humans who've committed crimes in their lifes. Their reasons for the actions are not incl. when it was explained. Rukia simply assumed everyone were evil when they are send to hell since they committed crimes. In this system, people who killed multiple people to save someone or act as revenge to the people who murdered someone horribly can be send to hell. From this POV, that person isnt necessarily evil since his intention wasnt evil but his actions were wrong aka in this case, the main villian could've been a person who isn't evil. People can make dumb decisions when they are angry after all. Also if we look at it from the Japanese perspective:
Kids running away from their parents is a crime bad enough to be send to Hell. Animes has based their stories on this. So based on their culture, I think it isnt far fetched to assume this attempt wasnt that pathetic since Hell in their culture isnt as black or white as the Western culture.

I could have bought Hitsugaya wanting to deal with the plot alone, but Ichigo of all people would understand going against soul society laws to seek personal justice, and Hitsugaya would have known this. Then they could have chased Kusaka together, which could have been all kinds of awesome. Kusaka could have gone batshit crazy cuz of the king’s seal or by being around hollows. Why not, and that’d be why the two Arrancar’s join him, they respect his hollow like desire to get revenge on soul society (and maybe even rule it as a king). As for the twin swords, the replication of sword spirit could fuck with the balance if reality or some shit, which would (lazily) justify why one had to be eliminated, naturally Hitsugaya’s immense potential made him the favourite of central 46 and he just wanted to talk to his old bud, before disappointingly realizing just how depraved his old bud became. It also would have been super sweet if Ichigo would have been attacked along Hitsugaya, resulting in them two brawling with a bunch of soul reapers.

And then it devolves into "get the magic thing to get revenge! Destroy the world! Join me good guy!" and finally a wankfest of all the bankai, shikai, fighting a big ass dragon...

    • @Aurora-313
      @Aurora-313 2 роки тому +1

Personally, I take it to mean he (Kusaka) had a leeching Zanpakutou akin to Yumichika's, and if I were in charge of writing the movie? I'd actually reframe the meeting with Central 46 as them trying to get Kusaka to abandon his "Hyorinmaru" so he could obtain his _actual_ Zanpakutou. But instead of listening to reason, to C46 actually explaining why this is necessary and required for Kusaka's growth as a Shinigami - Kusaka just tunnel-visions on 'abandon your sword', aka the most powerful ice-based Zanpakutou in existence.
Kusaka subsequently throws a fit and tries to kill Hitsugaya insisting Hitsugaya is leeching off _his_ power. Which is where the stealth force/guards step in. Rather than restraining Hitsugaya (though they're doing that), they're protecting him from a maniac.
Which would make the entire thing all the more tragic since it was brought about by miscommunication and base human flaws of greed and pride.

Fade to black imo was the worse, it was sooo damn annoying. The typical use of the soul society betraying ichigo is something that always is used as an excuse for ichigo to fight the enemy alone, only for them to come to their senses and help him. Not to mention the two annoying antagonist and a memory erasing plot to top it all off. Diamond dust is my favorite. I love how i thought the movie ended where they had the stand off at the cliffside in the soul society, but then they finished it off with an all out battle with some great action from everyone, hitsugaya isn't my favorite so i didn't mind the lack of development on him, but i enjoyed it enough to have fun. It was a movie after all so i expected alot of plot holes and shoe-ins so new audiences wouldn't be confused with overexplained context, it has a simply digestible plot that any new audience member can enjoy, so i definitely agree with what you said at the end where you noted that if we just wanted great action and animation, then go ahead. I love bleach and the lore but sometimes i crave a good time at the movies a little more than a deep enriched story (but that is just me) So getting a break from the canon story line and diving into a completely new one in this movie was honestly refreshing at the time of the release, so I naturally have a soft spot for this film. If we wanted more development then i guess this should've been a arc in itself in order to explain everything. Wouldn't it have been more interesting if HItsugaya had a twin? That would make the whole two people having the same zanpakuto thing a bit easier to swallow. And made it way more emotionally impactful because instead of Hitsugaya killing some dude who is his friend the antagonist in the story is his literal family member.

Memories of nobody, and fade to black are my favorite. I agree with you about this movie. Also a 5th bleach movie would be very cool.

It would have been cool if hitsugaya could repair that broken zanpakuto and be able to have two or maybe the two could merge and become an even stronger one.

Remember how in anime just before second phase of Ichigo vs Ulquiorra fight there was this post-ending "and cut for today" ?
Where they were going on a break in "recording"?
This film feels like that but drunk.

Problems I've had with the Bleach movies has been that most of them try to shoehorn too many characters into the plot and having Ichigo be a major player. I would have preferred to keep the series about Ichigo but have the movies fill in gaps or separate side stories without Ichigo having to be involved (minus Hellverse or Memories of Nobody). DDR really needed to be about Hitsugaya and either Rangiku or Hinamori.

I know this story is half baked and doesn't mesh with the facts of the manga, but I always loved it since my favorite character was the center of the plot. Back when this movie came out anime movies usually never made sense or were canon so I wasn't surprised with how it turned out.

This movie kinda broke the idea of zanpakutous being unique, and being the face of wielder's power. Besides it didn't really give in any impactful lore other than hitsugaya had bestie being killed because of plot.
If people were known to have certain power without even them releasing them, I don't think Ikkaku could've kept his secret for long either, mind you.

Yeah, going through all the Bleach movies for the first time and after really enjoying the first one...
I was pretty bored by this movie, it felt like a movie with so little going on that the runtime felt longer than it should have been, by the hour mark, it felt like I was in the final 10 minutes of the story, but no, I had 29 minutes left?!
Toshiro's one of my top 3 favourite Captains of the Gotei 13 but this movie really did him no favors, I couldn't care about Kusaka at all, there was an interesting idea about how he was betrayed by the Soul Society and left for dead, but its never focused on, and everyone but Ichigo and Friends acted like idiots the whole movie, which really baffled me

I have not seen the movie but I would assume that if the Captain is presumed to have turned on the company, his entire team would be held for questioning to see who knows what, and who is an accomplice. At least that would make sense to me and I have absolutely no military training.
And yes I would watch for Hitsugaya Toshiro

  • @FrozenTaichou

This movie to me is the BEST movie. I don't care what people say about it being bad because to me, this was the first Bleach thing I've ever watched. I didn't even knew what was bleach until I was in middle school and my mum brought the first 4 DVD boxes for me and my brother. I watched this movie while in primary school and thought it was awesome. This movie was the one that made me like Bleach and then watching the bleach episodes made me love bleach.
In my opinion, the Fourth Movie was terrible. It didn't make any sense what so ever. Like what was the whole point of it? It didn't drag me into the movie unlike the first three movies did. I feel like that the Fourth Movie was rushed unlike the others. Sure it did explain to us about what happens if you're in Hell but it's just not brilliant like the others.
Another reason why I like this movie is not because Toshiro is my favourite characters but you actually learn more about his past. I know that Kusaka and Toshiro having the same Zanpakuto and having to fight to the death part was confusing and didn't make no sense but I absolutely LOVE this movie and this will always be my favourite movie, even if they make other ones in 2021, The Diamond Dust Rebellion will ALWAYS be my favourite.
But I know people have different opinions on what movies they like and hate. That's just what people are. But all that I'm saying is that the Hell Verse was terrible and didn't make any sense.
My order on what's my favourite bleach movie is to my most hated movie is:
    #1 The Diamond Dust Rebellion.
    #2 Fade to Black
    #3 Memories of Nobody.
    #4 Hell Verse.
    Also sorry for rambling.

Ion know man, Toshiro is a captain, but he's also a kid. As it has been established, he is not the type to speak openly about himself to others and as a child (even though he has spent over 100 years in the Soul society) seeing a person, *_your best friend_* you thought was dead for years show up just like that, would surely confuse a lot of goddamn people. So some _some_ of his actions *_could_* be justified. I'm not disagreeing with this video, on the contrary, I just had to say that.
