Repeat after me "A cordless drill battery is not a hammer".

A couple of bench vise tips... it's very much worth while to be absolutely sure you have the vise positioned so the fixed jaw hangs slightly out over the bench edge; a sixteenth or so is fine, thus allowing longer items to be held vertically if need be. Also, if the vise can be placed at a bench corner, it allows more flexibility... and if you can get it where the fixed jaw can hang out over both front and side bench edges (once swiveled) so much the better! I like the right corner, but thats personal preference.
Spending some extra time beefing up the bench mounting position helps as well... I have an 18" square piece if 1/2" plate bolted into the bench corner, with the vise mounting bolts going through the whole shebang. Also, anchor the bench 'Rock of Gibraltar' solid to something so it (along with attached vise) aren't dancing all over while manipulating stuff. With mine, I rounded off the bench corner to match the vise base plate profile for even more work clearance (probably not applicable for all installations.)
Incorporating a ground point somewhere in the mounting under the bench can be very handy for welding... and a couple of ceiling mounted flood lights focused down on the vise and it's vicinity are the icing on the cake.

+rwbishop Oops... should clarify. It's the fixed jaw 'face' that should hang out over the bench edge by a sixteenth or so.

The Wilton template states drilling 4 (four) 11/16 inch diameter holes and mounting the vise with 5/8 inch diameter capscrews that are two inches longer than the benchtop thickness using flat washers and nuts. Use minimum grade 5 bolts.

That's a nice vise - waay beyond your current mechanical skill level. Everyone has to learn though. Good Stuff.

The template should be used only to see where the holes will be going through the mounting material; in this case wood. The template is a good way to locate the first drilled hole. After that, you should put the vise in place and bolt the vise down using the one bolt. Use the vise as your template to drill the other holes and install bolts as you go. This will help prevent drill creep and that is a bigger problem when drilling through steel. If you used the same method on your steel welding table, your method probably wouldn't have worked well. You probably ended up redrilling the holes using the vise as a template and thus widening the holes. That can lead to the vise moving when in heavy use.

I gave you a thumbs up and a comment for the algorithm. If nothing else, it shows more about the vise, and allowed me to read the comments below, some of which were helpful, some of which were not.

Why don't you just put the Vise bench where you want it take a pencil Circle through the holes where the bolts go and pull your Vise away and that's where you need to drill the holes

Also note - when drilling lower (front) left hole he reverses drill direction several times as if he's not sure which way it's running. Does this guy know anything?!?

I have a Tradesman 63200 (Model 1755) 5.5" vise for more than 20 years mounted to a 1" thick MDF bench top with 1/2-13 grade 5 hex head cap screws. Wilton does not seem to recommend any mounting screw or bolt size that I can see on their web site or in their literature. In 20 years of use, the 1/2 screws had held the vise through much hammering cutting and other hard use.

Hello Richard Fallstich, The Wilton template (seen in the above video) states: "...drill 4 (four) 11/16 inch diameter holes and mounting the vise with 5/8 inch diameter capscrews that are two inches longer than the bench top thickness, using flat washers and nuts. Use minimum grade 5 bolts..."

Tractor supply sells grade 5 and grade 8 bolts nuts and washers by the pound for a good price anyone mounting a vise or other heavy tool should try them as a reasonable source for SAE hardware.

Big Ed that length would depend on your bench you’re mounting the vise on...

pretty sure you would rip that table in half and bend the cheater bar on the end of whatever chrysler garbage your tring to bust loose before the grade 5 bolts knew you were there. if you were so inclined tho Ace hardware or homeless death spot has tons of grade 8 hardware in 5/8 and larger.
and the drill bits specific for dead tree carcass in sizes much larger than 1in. 😎

How to install a bench vise:
    1) buy a bench vise. You can get great deals on old "made in America" vise's (SP?) from Ebay for a fraction of the price on the new "Made in china" crap.
    2) put the vise on the bench where you want it.
    3) mark the holes with a pencil
    4) drill the holes
    5) bolt the vice to the bench.
Why did this take almost 9 minutes and you didn't even get step 5 done?

The word is out on used made in USA vises thanks to websites like garage journal. The made in USA vises in reasonable condition command a very high price now.
