Very few artists enunciate as well as Meat Loaf does, and "Bat Out of Hell" truly showcases that extreme talent. I am so grateful for having the opportunity to hear his music now, and revel in the beauty of his work.

Speaking of similarity between bat vocals and human vocals: it really amazes me that humans can also learn echolocation, especially when they're blind and have the brain capacity to dedicate to it :)

Meat Loaf (with Jim Steinman's writing) is one of the few musicians who can sing a song for 15 minutes and when it ends, you feel like the song was way too short.

Him and Jim are also great and doing very long repeated sections (Objects in the rear view mirror, and hot summer night for example) without it getting tired or boring
Giving credit where credit id due. Michael Lee was the heart of Meatloaf, but Jim was the brains.
Jim was the undisputed master of the power ballad. Join the music to the right voice, whether it be Meat or Bonnie Tyler or even Air Supply, and it became an instant classic.

I caught Meatloaf at club in regional Australia in the early 80s . He was well past his peak popularity at that stage , he was playing a club in regional Australia for god's sake . You would have thought he was playing Madison Square Garden from the amount of energy and commitment he put into his performance . He was brilliant .

Yeah, I think Bat Out of Hell was 77 and Bat out of Hell 2 was 93. So you were right in the middle. I was born in 90, and listened to his music growing up. Pretty sad I never got to see him live. What's crazy is Bat out of Hell stayed on charts for 9 years, and sold 200k albums EVERY year until the mid 2010s. It's nuts. Haven't listened to any of Bat out of Hell 3.

Agreed...in my teens I wore not one but TWO cassettes of Bat Out Hell...now I have it on CD which won't wear out...and LP...an original pressing LP, not todays stuff...just put it on any drop the needle and let it play, wonderful from start to finish.
Bat Out of Hell is easily one of the greatest rock and roll of all time. A completely perfect package.

If the Hall of Fame is a credible honour then he should be there. Even If it is just an industry pat on the back for selling lots of copies, it's STILL astounding that he was never inducted.
I love how he just sings the SHIT out of this song, there's sooo much energy. He can hold it back when he needs to but you can always hear it bubbling, like anticipation waiting to come out.
21:04 the backup singer with the amazing moustache is Rory Dodd. He sang the “Turn around, bright eyes" duet lyrics on Bonnie Tyler's “Total Eclipse of the Heart" and he’s one of backup vocalists on Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girls”.
Rory is an incredibly grateful, friendly, and kind guy. He’s a family friend, and what I always remember from talking to him is that he has nothing but good things to say about how Meat Loaf treated everyone in the band and team on and off the stage. Meat looked out for everyone like they were family. Something that isn’t true of many others performers in similar positions.

Early on, before Rory and Ellen Foley come in, there's a shot of them, head forward, eyes locked on the crowd. It reminds me of something like The Lord of the Rings. They are watching the crowd, and they are about to charge, and there is raw power and determination in their eyes.

he used to come in through the entry with the crowd, welcoming people. A couple once met him on a backstreet, after a show. They went into a nearby pub and talked a bit. 5 years later, they where waiting in line to get in to another concert. RJD came in to the "official" entry, as usual.
And recognized them and said hi.
Tempo changes, more than three instruments, and songs that are longer than three minutes are all things I miss in popular music.
Me too...and actual talent...you know...people that can actually play the hell out of those instruments and write songs with lyrics that actually mean something.
Musicianship and songs with verses are things I miss, along with voices free from autotune.
Maybe explore European Rock (embargoed in the US!).

@@nbrowser Then you should checkout Japanese bands/groups like: Wagakki band, Band-Maid, Scandal, Yousei teikoku and Kalafina (consists of 3 singers: Soprano, Mezzo-soprano and Alto and a band).

Some people were just made for each other. Meatloaf and Jim Steinman were destined to join forces. Meatloaf gave so much energy during his live shows he would literally collapse after the show. I do not think we will ever have another singer like him.
Scholz and Delp had the same vibe going.
I loved the 70's and how bands and songwriters didn't simply put together albums, they were two-sided, 40 - 60 minute musical stories on celluloid. What the industry called concept albums were full-on productions that took you from the beginning to the end of the story. Steinman was a GENIUS!!!

The struggle Meat Loaf and his producer had to get this on the radio was brutal. They kept trying and trying, rejected by all the studios but once released it was FIRE. I was in Jr high and sat on my bedroom floor recording it on my tape recorder off the radio so I could play it over and over and write the lyrics in my tablet. Mom kept saying"you need to do your homework!", but all I wanted was to discover every second of this song. Memories....
That brings back memories. I used to have the tape player set up in front of the tv to get music from The Monkees. Good times.
Memories is exactly right. I am a tad older than you and was either a Sophomore or Junior in H.S. when this came out. But with me I actually bought the cassette. Or was it the 8 track? It came right out when people were transitioning from one format to the other. Probably the cassette. This album always brings me back to those times. This, Fleetwood Mac's Rumor's, Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti and that first Boston album dominated my H.S. music days. We saw Meatloaf at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island in I want to say 1977 and the show was fire. It was short though because he only had the one album and he filled the rest of the show singing oldies. And the concert was only an hour at best but it was still amazing.

Pretty much every song written by Jim Steinman (who sadly also passed away, in 2021) is "over the top" in one way or another. He wrote rock and roll musical theater, and did it better than anyone else. It's fair to say that he was a major part of Meat Loaf's success since most (maybe all?) of Meat Loaf's biggest hits were written by Steinman. If you want to hear more of Jim Steinman's songwriting, I highly recommend "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler and "Making Love Out of Nothing At All" by Air Supply. The latter is easily the most over-the-top love song EVER written.
Have you seen/heard of Tanz der Vampire? Steinman numbers as a vampire musical it is OOOOO
Meatloaf was a genius in his own right, but no doubt Steinman deserves tremendous praise. Great great song writer, who will never be as well known as he should be. But the songs live on.

Absolutely, right through to the final notes of "For Crying Out Loud" (my favorite song off the album). Still one of Todd Rundgren's best jobs as producer even if he initially said yes because he thought it was a novelty album.

I got to see Meatloaf in concert during his Bat Out of Hell 2 tour. It was amazing to look out in the audience and see grandparents, parents, and kids all singing along. I still consider this the greatest concert I’ve ever attended and I doubt anyone will ever top it.
Bat Out of Hell 2 was an incredible tour. I caught him at the Riverport Amphitheater in St. Louis. He had his daughter with him and she sang. And above the beautiful, powerful songs, the incredible stage presence, was this gratitude and humbleness. Anyone who caught that tour can consider themselves lucky. Thinking of modern singers, besides Brent Smith - maybe - you'd be hard pressed to find anyone to hold a candle to Meatloaf.
I saw him several years later during a VH-1 storytellers tour. Show was EPIC!
Sometimes it takes an expert's perspective for me to appreciate the difference between good and truly great, and Elizabeth has done that for me with 'Bat Out of Hell".
I've loved this song since it came out, but this analysis pointed out the composition, theatrics and musicality of this piece, as well as Meatloaf's sheer vocal strength and skill; with the result that I now love it even more.

Meat legally changed his first name to Michael in 1984.
I was able to see Meat Loaf perform a few times over the years. Once in a club about 2 years before Bat 2. There were maybe 200 of us there. Once in Raleigh, NC with about 2,000 and Once at a god forsaken amphitheater with about 5,500. The thing is, the presentations were all equal. He gave the audience, whatever the size, everything he had, every single time. That's why, no matter where he was Meat Loaf ALWAYS tore the house down.

You have to listen to "For Crying Out Loud". It's so gut wrenching and powerful. Either the original album version or the late version he did live. He wasn't incredibly in shape anymore but it shows his talent and passion even at a point where his health wasn't at best.
Whenever I put on the Album version of For Crying out loud: "Damn my eardrums, put it on eleven!!"
And when those final low notes from the orchestra kick in for his last lines, my goosebumps go sky high

For Crying Out Loud is underrated in my opinion, but has a sort of raw perfection to it.
"For Crying Out Loud" is a great heart-wrenching song. Another one like that is "Objects In The Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are."
Meatloaf is such an epic performer…after this, you should check out ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’ as performed on ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’ in 1978.

That was such an impactful story-song of my youth. Divided into "acts" and so passionate. Unusual in the genre and the time. Story telling is rare in popular music, unfortunately; it doesn't fit radio's fixed format of those times.

And there's not another song that captures that intensity as much as Paradise By The Dashboard Light! And it's all entertwined with seeing midnight shows of, "Rocky Horror Picture Show," weekend after weekend since they played PBTDL before every showing and the audience would be up acting everything out, gearing up for the craziness that was coming. Lol. Great times!

Meatloaf singing the lead on Jim Steinman's songwriting masterpiece, Ellen Foley giving the female parts and Todd Rundgren producing. A once-in-a-lifetime synergy of magical, musical mastery. Take any one of these pieces of the puzzle and none of it could have been the iconic epic this album was.

I'm excited for this one. Bat Out of Hell is the song that made me realize I prefer songs that have a strong story in them. It also started my movement from country to metal, and more specifically, Iron Maiden.

The delivery is just...larger than life...that's what/who Meatloaf was.
Wait... what..?? Me too. Meatloaf showed me how much passion there could be in music, and I went looking for more. Found my way to Maiden and other stuff.
Meat was an incredible entertainer. He didn't just sing a song he acted out the song, sold the sold, he brought you into the song to feel what its about. I was a young kid when I first herd Bat out of Hell and now I am almost 60 still love his music and miss he very much..R.I.P.
I watch him perform live and it amazed me how he was 50 belting out these songs and running around on stage. brilliant performer
"Bat Out Of Hell" is on my personal short list of perfect rock albums, with every song having an epic feel. Meat Loaf's energy, passion, and ability to apply raw emotion to compelling musical stories make him, IMO, the unequaled rock and roll balladeer. It was a sad day when we lost this great talent, and I fear we will not see his equal again in my life time. Thank you for doing this homage and sharing your insights with us.

His role as Eddie in Rocky Horror was my introduction to Meat Loaf. Had all his stuff in multiple formats. I think I have my original Bat Out of Hell vinyl still.
I still see him in that movie, in my head, when I think of him.
They used to play "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" before every midnight showing of "Rocky Horror" at our local theater, so it's all balled up into one big, amazing set of very specific memories. Lol. So much fun all the way around!

In an Interview Susan Sarandon tells, that he was a little bit disturbed by the homoerotic vibes of the movie and nearly fled, then his part was over. And some decades later in german tv he kisses a man just for fun and made jokes about his former self.

Chills every time. And "nothing really rocks and nothing really rolls and nothings every worth the cost" is one of my all-time favorite lyrics.
That one and "if I gotta be damned I wanna be damned dancing through the night with you."
40 years later, "nothing really rocks and nothing really rolls and nothings every worth the cost" feels more like an rather empty aphorism to "sell" the song an angsty teenagers. Sure Steinman's proud of it, though.
Its operatic, it's theatrical, and it's what this album was trying so hard to "sell."

Fun fact: Ellen Foley, who sang on the studio album, declined doing the live tour and was replaced by Karla DeVito. So for the music video, you're seeing DeVito onscreen but hearing Foley's vocals.

Thanks Elizabeth for tackling Meatloaf. When this album was released while I was in college, there was nothing quite comparable to it. Jim Steinman and Meatloaf were the perfect combination of superb composing and booming vocals. Bat Out of Hell has easily stood the test of time; one of the greatest debut albums of all time!!
Without a doubt, Meatloaf was the greatest singing performer of all time. He gave it all he had every time. He was all in. He was the GOAT in my opinion.

Meat Loaf is mesmerizing to watch perform. He put every single ounce of his considerable weight into every song he sang. Gloriously raw and expressive. And supposed to have been a really good man as well. He was a cult icon for a reason. Glad you get him. And kudos to Jim Steinman who wrote almost all of his music. RIP to both of them - they died the same year.
How about we talk about that tenor high-C5 note at the end! Meat Loaf represents one of the rare occasions where a heldentenor can be heard in popular music. Simply one of the greatest voices to ever record music. So sad that he's gone; there will never be another.
Of all the battles Meat Loaf faced performing during the 70s, one of his hardest battles was the battle to keep his hair out of his face.

I’ve lost count of the number of copies of the album “Bat Out of Hell” I’ve bought since I bought my first vinyl copy back in the ’70’s.
Vinyl, Cassette Tapes, Cassette Tapes to replace lost or stolen tapes, CD’s, DVD’s, Digital.
And lucky enough to see him a couple of times too.

I love that the backup singer comes in to be part of the story when they start doing "If I gotta be damned". She kind of slides up behind him looking a little shocked at first then joins in. It' so cool. I can't imagine what it must be like seeing an entire show live. It's almost like a musical only there's no dialogue, it's all told through song and action.
Karla Devito is in the video and went with them on tour. Ellen Foley is the actual si ger on the album. For reasons I don't know, she chose not to go on tour.
The two women recently became friends and did a duet on Foley's recent album

The ending of this song is my musical version of Dylan Thomas's "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night". The first time through the lyrics he is somber as he is dying, but then the second time he starts raging against the dying of the light. Always gives me chills.
Meat Loaf and Jim are two of the most talented story writers in music. As far as I’m concerned there are many many fantastic story writers in music, but I hold a soft spot in my heart for meat.
One of my regrets in life is that I never got to see a live Meatloaf performance. I would not call it a concert, Meatloaf put on a theatrical performance! The motorcycle sound was made by Todd Rundgren indeed with a guitar. Amazing production!
My best friend and I got to see him on his 2016 tour a few stops before he collapsed in Edmonton.
It's a memory I will always cherish.
Braver than we are (being the last collab with Jim and Meat) is an album I will always cherish (especially "Going all the Way [A Song in Six Parts]) as it reunited Ellen, Karla, and Meat in the same song.

Paradise By The Dashboard Light is probably the best storytelling example for Meatloaf that I've seen, plus it's an amazing song! I absolutely love his voice xo
This song is just as exciting as it was when I first heard it at the age of 9. It's impossible for me to listen to it without a huge smile on my face
I saw him several times. He was classically trained but this genre of music was his calling. A lot of kudos need to go to Jim Steinman who wrote the songs on this album.
A lot of kudos also needs to go to Todd Rundgren's incredible playing on this song.
Meatloaf is phenomenal, but he was not classically trained based on his Wikipedia and multiple biographical interviews. What source do you have for this training?

In the VH1 - Behind the Music about Meat Loaf, band members told of him walking off stage after a show and collapsing from sheer exhaustion. Meat Loaf gave everything he had in him to his audience - 1000% of his energy and ability was spent in every performance, leaving “everyone the field.” Talent like his to perform, talent like Jjm Steinman to write and produce such amazing music, is a thing of the past in rock music. As an almost 54 year old, I sadly think the golden age of rock and music in general has passed. Overproduced, auto tuned, low to no talent performance is what the music industry has turned to, and the likes of Meat Loaf and the other greats from to 60’s - 80’s cannot and will not come again.

OMG!!!! What a debut album! Spent an entire week during '78 school holidays playing this album all day every day. What an epic song this was! Great memories, fantastic time! Reliving my youth all over again listening to this. Brilliant!!!!
Impressively, Todd Rundgren improvised that guitar solo in one take with no overdubbing.
The only thing that needs to be said is that Meatloaf was one of the greatest singers in rock history. The power of that man's voice was amazing !! Combine his voice with the musical Mastery of Jim Steinman and it was an incredible music composing team. We also can't forget that this was also produced by the legendary Todd Rundgren. And some people may not know that the woman in the video, Karla DeVito it's not the woman who is singing on the album. That was the beautiful voice of Ellen Foley.

Wow Elizabeth, this is one of your finest examples of outstanding analysis. Virtually all of the songs written by the one and only Jim Steinman are mini operas and Meatloaf was the finest purveyor of their dramatic content. I wore out both my original vinyl record and later cassette of this album but thankfully the CD has stood the test of time.

Meat Loaf is still the only singer I've seen live that could sing over an entire stadium PA. If you sat in the right place, you could hear his raw vocal, and it was amazing. Sent chills down your spine. The projection, clarity and tone, spot on. It was definitely an experience that influenced me to incorporate some of those techniques into my own vocals.... of course nowhere near as well, haha. Cheers!
What a song! What a vocalist! Unparalleled performance! I feel so lucky to have got to see Meat Loaf live. It was his Bad Attitude tour (fourth album) the day before my 16th birthday in 1985. I already had all his albums up to that point and loved every one of them.
The album “Bat Out of Hell” is technically a concept album. The title track introduces the main character, leaving his girlfiend’s house on his motorcycle and crashing into a ditch and the rest of the album’s songs recount his memories as he’s dying. A true musical masterpiece ❤️

This was already a life long favorite but it is forever etched in my mind now with the memory of a dear friend. We met a couple of people from Ireland that had moved to Scotland to get the children away from the "troubles".
We were all attending a motogp race as they were in Mugello Italy and staying at the same farmhouse. We quickly realized we had met a very special couple. After discussing racing we discovered we were both going to the next weekends race in Barcelona.
They changed plans and stayed in the same village we were and we had a great time.
Unfortunately Covid wrecked plans to meet up with them in the years after. We recieved a call from her husband she had passed at far to young an age. They had a memorial service and it was cast over the web. We were able to attend from the United States. The photo tribute showed her love of family, travel, and motorcycle racing. The music played was a wonderful selection that reflected her dynamic personality. She was placed on a traditional wheeled cart and as the service finished and it was rolled out to "Bat out of hell". Perfect, but l will always shed a tear when l.hear it from now on.

Meatloaf was once in a generation, and this song is completely timeless. You have to do the album version of "Objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are", along with other people's suggestions of "For crying out loud". Great video btw. :)
No, There have been multiple generations since this song and still no new Meatloaf. He was once in a lifetime if not more.
The song that defined Meatloaf and a generation. Pure Steinman, if you heard one of his solo songs you would swear it was a Meatloaf song. His writing ability and Meatloaf's singing ability together were shear perfection. When this song came out there was nothing bigger. And yes the extended version has a longer guitar intro which is also amazing.
Jim Steiman's solo Ablum Bad For Good was meant to be Meatloafs second album following from Bat Out of Hell, but Meat had vocal problems at the time and couldn't record it, so eventually Steinman sang and released it himself as he couldn't be sure Meat would ever be able to record it. By the way, Steinman does a brilliant job on Bad For Good, he's not Meat but he does a very good attempt at doing it in Meat's style.
One of the very few albums where I listen to each and every song, sometimes repeatedly. 46 years later and the power of this album blows me away.
The thing I love about that final held note is that it's a full-power belt - power as only Meat knew how to deliver - and then the backing music dies away to a really quiet, almost haunting melody, leaving the belt to continue unaided over the top. And somehow, it still doesn't feel out of place above that soft, almost delicate backing.

I know that a "masterpiece" is supposed to be something you do at the end of your training. And this was done on his first album. But it's still a masterpiece by any measure. Just a fantastic song, sung with a masterful level of skill, talent and soul. I love this song.
What really amazes me, not a single song from Bat Out Of Hell was a clunker. EVERY single song was a triumph of Meat's & Jim's powers. Makes me cry to this very day, all these years later.
I believe it is still to this day the top selling album in Australia.
Makes me tear up. How many times I listened to this album when it first came out I cannot count. That he's gone is unreal to me.
This is one of the few songs I sing at Karaoke, and the DJs always say I am the only person that does the whole song properly. It is a physically and emotionally draining song that Meatloaf started his concerts with for years. RIP Mr. Loaf, you will be missed.
I remember being at a sports bar back in my uni days and everyone was singing along with all the usual pop/rock songs then this comes on. I'm full on singing at pitch and getting very weird looks from my friends.

This is a great album. I heard "Two Out of Three" a number of times. But when my first gf introduced me to "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" I went out and bought the CD immediately.
Where did she introduce you to that song? Was it in a car? ;)
This track (and the whole classic album) owes so much to the talent of producer, guitarist (& motor cycle sfx creator) and arranger (music and backing vocals) Todd Rundgren. He also financed the recording when the original record label pulled just prior to recording
They never had support from a label for this album. They ended up going to Rundgren asking him to produce and finance it since they couldn't get any traction from any label. The subsidiary of Epic Records they got to record it wouldn't finance it. There's a Professor of Rock video about it.
I wonder if any of those labels regretted not taking a chance on an album that ended up selling more than 45 million copies. That's the 14th largest seller ever.
I got to meet Todd at a breakfast. Very cool guy. I thanked him for producing this album.
Going to say it again, this is one of those albums you need to start and listen to the whole thing as it is a Rock Opera and the whole album is the set of stories. Put it on and do not stop it until you come to the end of the album! Period!

Meat (RIP) is a phenomenal performer and talent, but his chief songwriter, producer and collaborator, Jim Steinman (RIP), is equally deserving of tremendous praise.
The music and the vocals in Meat Loaf’s music, and particularly in this song, take you on such an emotional rollercoaster. It’s like a Shakespearian romance-drama-tragedy all wrapped into one musical performance, perfectly.

This is a great “blue collar” rock opera album. I say blue collar in the sense that the analogies and concepts are just being honest and open. In Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad there’s a line that says “But you’ve been cold to me so long I’m crying icicles instead of tears” and in For Crying Out which is a beautiful love song done with just a piano but one of the lines says “For pulling me away when I'm starting to fall
For revving me up when I'm starting to stall
And all in all for that I want you”
Meatloaf was such a legendary singer and his presence in rocky horror and the pick of destiny was so show stealing. Bat out of hell was always a favourite as well as I'd like for you paradise by the dashboard light and it's all coming back to me now. Gone but will never be forgotten with such a voice and back catalogue

I bought this album for "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" (still one of my all time favorites) and quickly fell in love with the whole thing. 45 years later I still remember the words to all the songs. I saw him on his Unplugged tour in 1999 or so. Smaller more intimate theater in Jacksonville Florida. It was a dream come true.
