- In this video I bring you along as I have a look at a customers 2018 Silverado that got dropped off with a customer complaint of a service engine soon light on. A quick scan showed an issue with the fuel pressure sensor as well as an EVAP leak. Doesn't take long to see that the salt is doing wonders on the rusty ol' Chevy.
-Enjoy!

Its a hard deal for the car makers. I completely understand actually wanting plastic parts in that environment as steel dosent cut it. But here in australia ,with a dry ,hot, enviromnment a steel component will way outlast anything made of plastic. Usually our cars have very little rust but the interiors and any plastic engine bay fittings turn to dust. My father, by virtue of having a simple carport to keep the sun off, is still driving around in a rust free 1981 ford falcon.
I live in Arizona, U.S., and I'm still driving around in a rust free 1972 Ford Pinto wagon. But we have the same problem here with sun. It burns the paint off, and rots the interior and tires.
The U.S. has so many different environments that is almost impossible to design one vehicle to withstand all of them. Also, not all of our states use salt and/or sand on the roads in the winter. When I lived in Arizona, I drove a 1974 Datsun 510 around that was rust free. Getting parts was an import nightmare, but it was a fun little car. But in Indiana, where I grew up, cars rarely lasted more than 15 years with the best of care.
Are there any 73-76 Aussie Ford Falcons left? I want to build a mad max interceptor!!!!

The amount of rust on these cars never ceases to amaze me. I live in San Diego and just bought a 15 year old car with 130,000 miles. It doesn’t have a spec of rust on it so I consider myself very lucky.
It didnt use to be that bad here in the rust belt. They rusted but not as fast. In the old days, they used sand/salt. Now, its all-white stuff. I am not sure its salt. My Chevy truck is 2011, its almost toast. My spindles need to be replaced anlong with everything else up front. Imagine the spindle; thats the thick steal knuckle. Mine is swelled up and is falling apart.
I live in Michigan and this is the normal 8-10 year old car. You can preserve them a little longer with spraying the underbody but the best method I have had is 2-3 car washes a week. They still rust but not as bad. Dirt roads that they salt are the worst.
@maybach6536. I live 3 hours east of you in Yuma, Arizona. We are spoiled being in the sun belt where you can make a car last as you can without the elements being against your vehicle.
@@stevenbaker5099 the only thing that kind of sucks in the desert is if the car never sees shade or you don’t use a car cover when in the sun, the plastics become unbelievably brittle after about 10 years.

Hey Eric o I’ve been watching your channel for a while now and have gotten a lot better at solving electrical issues on my cars. Your systematic approach to troubleshooting electrical issues is second to none. I know I’ll never be that proficient but it’s a really gratifying feeling to solve electrical gremlins by truly understanding what your doing instead of just replacing parts.
I really enjoy listening to your thought process on electrical troubleshooting and learning new things

So sad that a 5 year old truck has all that rust. Your the man though....wish I had a mechanic like youhere in Indy.😊

Lack of maintenance and cleaning makes them this way that fast. Underbody spraying and constant washing in the winter slows this down.
I said that about my 2010 Tundra after a couple years of road salt. I had the famous rusted tailgate, bed rust around the wheel wells, and the frame looked as bad as this truck does. That's when I started using fluid film on my vehicles.
@@Sweeter-Jobs Exactly. Gotta wash the salt off, especially when the warm spells hit and all that salty slush garbage goes everywhere under the vehicle. Gotta spray the underside with fluid film or something similar. I soak mine down every fall.

My uncle always used to say, "if you listen real carefully in the still of the night, you can hear a Chevy rusting"

Millions of tons of salt on the roads per annum, makes the waterways into brine. It truly is awful. The salting needs to stop. Everyone should gets studs and plow and lay down gravel and deal with the slow going.

I found for verifying for EVAP leaks, you can close the vent valve and push up on the bottom of the tank to see if your pressure sensor voltage changes and holds.
Facing the decision to spend the money for upkeep on my 01 GMC Sierra c3 AWD 6.0 LQ4, over a thousand Caniukistan kopecs for new fuel lines installation, after a $1300 oil pan dipstick, ball joints and brake lines free for all or finding something newer and smaller to pull my trailer. But there is no way, No way I would consider giving GM 50 to 70 thousand dollars for a new one. It could have an option for road head while your driving and it still wouldn't be worth that kind of money.
Really cool your wife came out just for a hug! Awesome example for us viewers on loving your wife!

Thank you for showing the method to check the sensor. I would never have thought to send your own 5v signal to see if the computer reads it. I would have been checking continunity through the harness.
Simple bypass test with a low current test light is the way to go super fast and accurate
Sorry, I don't understand why the scan tool reads 5v at the ecu. Doesn't the test light act like a voltage divider thereby reducing the 5volts supplied to the pressure sensor to something less back at the ecu?
That chevy is the reason I krown/fluid film my truck every year, I live in Northern NJ and plow in the winter with my 06 dodge and it doesn't have any rust like this truck. PM is everything.
Seems to be extra rusty for an ‘18. Even for upstate NY. Good vid. Thanks
GM really needs to start painting and sealing their frames. That wax coating they prep the frames with is pretty well gone after the first winter.
Agreed, powder coated would look so good too.
Agreed, they’d be better off using an aftermarket under coating like fluid film
They are painted black. Ny salt is murder on the underside of any car.
@@patriotgarage Nah. I live in Ohio and I've had old trucks I wire-wheeled the frames and put a few coats of rustoleum on along with a clear coat enamel and they're spotless for years. The bean counters at GM figure it's not worth rust-proofing their trucks for less than 50% of their truck market.
@@ironpanther2420 And of course it helps with after parts sales for items that are exposed to rust damage like fuel pumps etc, a poor decision as it means that customers who see their pride and joy disintegrate before their eyes will think more carefully about buying GM again.

Top job as always Lad... 👍
I'm glad I fluid film my truck.
I love the scientific approach and explanation of the steps. The quality of the American cars went down the drain from the body and lacking of the good zinc bath to the cheap parts from Mexico..
Idk... my VW Jetta has a lot of Mexican made parts and is assembled in Mexico. Thing has been rock solid up to 263k so far. Its a 2012, 2.0(non turbo) with a 5 speed transmission. I've spent roughly 1100 on repairs, not maintenence, in the last 10 years of ownership. I can't say VW is stellar for reliability either. I think every brand makes a few gems now and then. I'm really big on staying away from excess electronics, turbos and automatic transmissions. Those things alone will generally lead to a more reliable car.
Nice one Eric👍👍
Breaks your heart... Knowing we buy these trucks, made in mexico. Steelerships never covers anything. We pay to much for this crap. Thanks for the repair.
I have a 2014 less a little rust. Fluid Film I swear by it. Thank you SMA
I've had good luck using Delphi pump modules and they come with the level sensor. They're a little pricey but seem to work and fit well. Good show as usual,😅
I had a Delphi that lasted only 3 yrs in my Jeep.
I bought a Delphi from Rock for my Ford Ranger and it was dead on arrival, glad I tested it before installing. Box said made in NYC. Bought a NAPA one it worked no drama.
I had a Delphi Module installed in my Honda Accord. It died around a month later and left me stranded far from home on a trip. Never again. Horrible quality.
Delphi sucks. I got a Chinese one off ebay for a 3rd of the price and has lasted over a hundred thousand miles so far
Toyota had to recall over a half million cars in the Corolla and matrix for a shit Delphi ecm that would cause a multiple cylinder misfire from GM. When Toyota and Gm merged .. there’s a good idea . Dude Delphi sucks , absolute dog water .

Glad I own NISSANS! haven't been in garage for years except to replace batteries under warranty. Had my 2010 Frontier for 9 1/2 years without any repairs except battery replacement.
Most Nissans are garbage. But... the older Altima, Sentra(manual) and Frontiers or Exterras were pretty solid. Wouldn't touch any of the newer stuff besides their Titan pickup truck, that thing is a beast. All the newer ones have the crappy CVT Jatco transmissions and they just don't last unfortunately.

You are incredible and Missus O, saw that hug in the scanner reflection. You dunn good by her !
She deserves many hugs. The warranty is the "standard" 5/50 warranty 5 minutes 50 feet, like Ford!
812k people yelled "Ain't got no gas in it..." all at the same time!!
Mrs O gets more pretty everyday, amazing rust that frame has so soon, do they sand them before assembly? Good show Eric O.
The reason they rust so bad is because they dont paint the frames, just coat them in wax. The wax chips off and exposes the raw steel frame to the road salt.
The frames are treated with a brine solution before they are shipped over from China.
😅
I like the way you call it the money light...

Wow that was a fun one! Here in Utah we don’t have quite as much rust so when I saw the small evap leak I was almost certain it was going to be from the pos purge valve that Chevy uses. See them leaking just enough when closed to set that fault all the time down here.
Those dirt roads are deadly to vehicles and then the salt is the fuel on the fire coupled with not washing the car in -20 degrees temperatures🎉
