OH, MY FRIEND. I'm so happy you took your time to talk about the hidden depth of this game. I have some old videos (10+years) of when I used to play this on high school, I kid you not, I spend thousands of hours in this game, literally. So I wanted to contribute a little to show how much this game has. The budokai franchise had so much potential, unfortunately, every entry in the series had at least one or two flaws that made the game not viable for serious competitive scene, but the community often had unofficial rules or consensus about the games balance, like always use the breakthrough capsule, always use 4 health bars or the rounds get too long and always use maps with walls, won't get into much detail here, after all its just a youtube comment, so I'll refrain from talking about Infinite World and shin budokai from the psp (almost the most balanced, almost). Now, the main thing about playing this game against a oponent with equal skill at high level are three things: Counter Teleports, juggle combos and transformations. And these three things are the reason Cell is broken AF, I'm not exagerating, and I know to some this seems unlikelly, but trust me, once you get deep enough into this game, you will know why. (Goku is the second one, but you will know why in a bit) So, the basic gameplan: no matter the character, at high level, you want the oponent to block first. because of the cancel system, anyone has an infinite block string. Now you might say "but you can just teleport out of it!". And Yes, you can teleport, but that doesn't garantee you are out of it, because teleporting can be a huge gamble, because of the Counter Teleport system, and that's the MAIN mechanic of this game, at high level at least. How it works? Well, you need a character with a fast jab, or "P" as it is called in this game. The thing is, some characters have a jab so fast, that if they try to jab the oponent and they teleport, you can just jab the oponent again as he appears behind you before they can even strike you. That applies to the default teleport where the character kicks the other. But you can always hold the guard button to cancel the kick and block the counter teleporter, but then, you are blocking again, and with 3 less ki bars. That's why, you never, NEVER teleport a cancelable move, because the attacker instantly turns around if you do so and it's even easier to punish the teleport then. The only thing you can do, is hold teleport and when you do try to jab the oponent faster than he does you. Because turning around during a teleport can be a bit finicky depending on the position of the characters on the stage and the characters themselves, you can basically steal turns by teleporting, jabing the oponent before they jab you and then starting your own combo. Because some characters have a jab with a recovery so low they can just press "P" once, wait a few frames and then start a new chain before the hitstun ends. There's more to it, like baiting jabs using armored moves, and then canceling them to punish, or dodging a jab instead of blocking to punish with your own and you can start to see how there's a whole game within the game just with this teleport mechanic alone. Cell has the fastest jab in the game, he can literally counter your teleport by just timming P... P... P... P... and if you block or dodge the first, you are stuck in the teleport minigame with him (probably, Super Buu might have an equal jab but super buu is overall garbage even with it, didn't have frame-data tools back in 2004 and its been a few years since I touched it, unfortunately) Then comes the transformations: They are basically "my turn" buttons, unless both players press it at the same time. You break the oponents guard, and then they have to choose between taking the combo or playing the teleport game. Cell has 3 transformations, and most importantly, he (alongside goku) has a 3 bar transformation, which means that at the start of the round, he already has a "my turn" button available. Juggle combos: So if you want to cause max dmg to your oponent, you need to learn juggle combos, because the game boils down to making your oponent lose the teleport game and getting hit, then you have until he recovers 3 health bars to finish your combo or to try to bait a teleporter then. So characters like Goku are high tier because you can do stupid damage with dragon fist (

I will be real with everyone but this game is what made me fall in love with DBZ... I even use to do practice mode and check out every transformation power up scaling. I loved how ss4 would jump to 140s meanwhile Browly had a similar power scale when he transform to legendary saying. Its the closest to the realist power scaling based what we kept seeing from DBZ movies
Budokai series was the shiznits! I remember having my PS2 and it came with 2 games, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Budokai 2. Budokai series was heavily underrated and deserves way more love than it should.
This, Super Dragon Ball Z and FighterZ are the trifecta of REAL Dragon Ball fighting games. Each of them has something that differentiates from each other but they are all super legit in a competitive setting.
There is one thing is important was that Transformation will ALWAYS BE YOUR FIRST PRIORITY!!! You see, this game Ki Meter revolutionized Budokai forever. In order to do all of the crazy dodge and Teleport stuffs? You need meters. However, as you can see, there is a "Baseline" system that determined how many Ki bars you will start with or will never get drained over time. Take Goku for example, his baseline was 3 but if he keeps transforming to SSJ4, he will have 6 baselines Ki. This put him as equal as Kid Buu 6 Baseline. More meters mean you can counter Teleport (basically a breakaway combo breaker) when you are taking damage more than other characters and YOU WILL WIN THE EXCHANGE IF THEY TRIED TO RETALIATE WITH THEIR OWN TELEPORT. Not to mention you charge ki faster with the Baseline Bars. That's why Kid Buu (6 bars) and Omega Shenron (all maxed out Baseline) was considered top tier because most of the time against the player, your damage was so miniscule against them thanks to their meters always above yours. You equip Yakkon capsule and watch their miserable life trying NOT to transform because the Yakkon capsule WILL make your Ki gauge Baselineless for ALL 7 Ki GAUGES if you dare to transform.
i like your immediate honesty in the beginning of the video. i grew up playing this game during my middle school years. my friend lend it to me and i was hooked
I loved this game as a kid; its story mode was pretty interesring for the time. You could get different interactions by playing through the story as different characters, and replaying the story with the same character allowed you to access alternate outcomes. They even allowed you to play through the story as Broly, which was wacky but fun.
Every character has infinites, some of them are even unscaled. But Bardock's "Heat Phalanx" gives back Ki on hit only in B3 vanilla; this bug has been patched in the special editions of the game.
I only ever played Budokai 1 and Tenkaichi 3 and got my ass kicked by Frieza till I practiced and whooped his ass and only a decade later did I realize I was playing a fighting game, these went so crazy I can't believe these went even harder with every new entry. Also Over The Hedge went CRAZY, highkey one of the best movie games because the movie was only the first four levels and they made the rest of the game this sick new plot holy shit I spent days playing co-op with my sister. I lowkey can't believe they haven't been pumping out sick ass 3D games for Dragon Ball this past decade.
Thank you for making this video I was a kid when this game came out and would watch tournaments of this game at my local game store (known as game crazy back then). I never understood how the guessing button thing worked but now I do. This game even tho I didn’t understand it is the best DBZ fighting game hands down
That's the only game I played which made feel untouchable. Had the game been not so underappreciated, I might have joined a local tournament to find someone who would kick my ass.
Man thank you. THANK YOU for covering this. These folks are out here talking on and on about "Tenkaichi Tenkaichi" FORGET that game. It was so hallow compared to this. Nothing beats getting 4 of your friends in a room, running a World Tournament on Cell Games, and fighting for your life. So much potential in this game that people do not recognize. If there were a competitive format (and maybe there is I'll probably google that in a second) I'm sure there would be some capsule bans and hopefully a hypermode ban, but overall the game is just so much fun.

Budokai 3 was everything i wanted in a dbz game. it even had a few movie, and gt characters. i was disappointed to learn that most people actually like, and spent the most time with BT3. I liked none of the tenkaichi series, but if any of my friends wanted smoke in Budokai, all they had to do was say the word.
Your Budokai 3 & classic Tekken videos earned likes & a subscriber 🫡 hearing you played SmackDown Vs Raw & seeing that you’re WWE2K player is a PLUS!! Speaking of, I bought 2K23 & I haven’t bought a WWE2K since 2K19. I will say that this new grapple reversal mechanic/guessing game reminds me a lot of the Budokai Dragon Rush. I find myself missing 2K19’s old ways of reversing, but other than that I love the game. Mega Cena fan so it’s amazing to play the showcase
The dragon rush was to yes tire your opponent you can do that too with just punches but dragon rush does it immediately. So what that is for is for the ultimate moves, like the spirit bomb, hell zone grenade, spirit sword, soul punisher, father son Kamehameha wave stuff like that where the button time prompt comes up to dodge it changes that so it's harder to dodge so they will take the max damage. When it's blue for them it goes the slowest yellow it's a bit faster and red is the absolute fastest. It's an interesting mechanic to the game but yeah you can do that. Also on top of that you can still do massive damage like if you do the whole dragon fist from a combo and launch them into the dragon rush you can go in with like 1000 damage just starting it and when you finish and have the warp Kamehameha which you will because breakthrough. You easily do like 3000 plus damage and take three life bars. If they have only three that's pretty much instant death. I remember one time I did the 100x big bang Kamehameha on shenron in like the story mode I think he blocked it tho but I saw the number right I assure you it said over 6000 damage........ there's only 7000 health in the game if tired him out first then did that that was instant death with an ultimate attack. Budokai 3 is INCREDIBLE HARD AND COMPLEX BRO ITS NUTS.
I find the combo cancelling system actually not that deep. All you have to do is learn 2 or 3 move strings with chargeable moves in them, and BAM! you're good to go. Then the game becomes a battle of administering ki better, and finding more ways to land never-ending combos while the other player waits to gain ki and teleport out of those. Matches thus become nauseatingly predictable. To me the DBZ fighting game that held the most potential and promise about how deep a DBZ fighting game could be was *Super DBZ for the PS2.* And no, not because of the quarter circle imputs (which tbh, aren't even needed and could be replaced with some other imput) but because of the way you created your own combos from the ground up; the way in which you had to play with physics and time your jumps right; the ways in which you got to temporarily hide behind obstacles; the way characters all had very individualized types of ki blasts, and ki-infused punches and kicks (which had all manners of wildly different utilities in battle)
Man shit I was dbz karakot had this amount of indepth moves you can do cause the movements and animation were smooth asf in that game..imagine it with that system..but hopefully budokai 4 delivers lmao
It's not the most basic fighting game, but calling it "complex" is a reach. Game is super simple, especially the variation in movesets... if you can even call them that.
I remember having a fucking hard time trying to beat Raditz. And I also remember going back to that fight, having finished the game, with Goku all powered up, and beating the shit out of Raditz as a Super Sayian 3 (he didn’t even got to touch me)
I played the shit out of this and so did one of my friends. If you are quick enough, you can teleport your opponents teleport. You can keep doing this until someone runs out of KI, it looks sick. The flow of the game is unlike most fighting games
These games are OD. The best in the Budokai lineup are 3, Shin Budokai 2, Infinite World n Burst Limit. 1 and 2 are good, too. But those games up there are peak of the Budokai style games. Between those four, you can't go wrong.
I'll never forget the first time I played this after budokai 1 in tournament. I surrounded my opponent at the edge of the ring and was just about to knock them out then I learned this was different real quick.
Personally, I find the combat of shin Budokai much better. It takes the best of this game and merges it with the best of burst limit. But combos are kept, cancels, etc. And you can throw supers at any time. In my opinion, it flows better. But obviously this game is the goat.
I'll always thank Budokais n Ultimate Ninjas for being the rare exceptions for good anime/manga based games. They aren't the only ones but they really standout given how big the frachises r. Always fun seeing u find the science to these games n putting hands on opponents.
My brother and i play this game all the time ...we usually select world tournament and then choose random players ... The ring out possibilty makes it super fun 😂😂😂

to the creator of the video, thank you for showcasing my favorite game of all time, loved it since it’s release.
I was just playing this the other day then you drop this video. If that ain’t some kinda future sight idk what is.
Def my favorite DBZ game. Glad its still standing the test of time.
Favorite DBZ game ever. Still the best one. Wish they'd remaster.
Kid Buu was trash Shenron had an amazing rushdown and the High damage as well as the baseline. Top tier was Piccalo Dabura Cell and Omega Shenron
i like your immediate honesty in the beginning of the video. i grew up playing this game during my middle school years. my friend lend it to me and i was hooked
I loved this game as a kid; its story mode was pretty interesring for the time. You could get different interactions by playing through the story as different characters, and replaying the story with the same character allowed you to access alternate outcomes. They even allowed you to play through the story as Broly, which was wacky but fun.
Smackdown Vs Raw was the SHIT!
Man oh man. It sucks being old now but it was dope being young back in the Didday
I didnt get into budokai until after it was done and when bt1 and shin budokai came out. I had alot to learn back then. Also u a G for playing SvR 06
Budokai 3 is my all time favorite Dragon Ball game then Tenkaichi 3 followed by Infinite world. But man Budokai 3 is just something special to me.
Bardock is one of those unbalanced characters where he gains ki in one of his moves so he can technically infinite! Might be wrong
Every character has infinites, some of them are even unscaled. But Bardock's "Heat Phalanx" gives back Ki on hit only in B3 vanilla; this bug has been patched in the special editions of the game.
Another game where bardock is broken? C'mon man...
@@quinndepatten4442 it's like they do it on purpose
This game even tho I didn’t understand it is the best DBZ fighting game hands down
If you pressed guard and down, down, you could taunt and it takes away a ki bar from the enemy. Really good if they are all powered up
That's the only game I played which made feel untouchable.
Had the game been not so underappreciated, I might have joined a local tournament to find someone who would kick my ass.
Don’t ignore the fact that instead of pressing all the face buttons at once you can also just press r2
Lol Tenkaichi and especially (Tenkaichi 3) had a more sophisticated combat system than the budokai series and I've played both
You do realize Budokai 3 as much love as Tenkaichi 3, right?
Hmm
@@AnEpicFatalityArchives Absolute BS. I wrote a whole article back in the day showing how Omega Shenron alone had a better mix-up game than the entire BT series. Scrubs apparently never learned even like 20 years later
@@TrollCapAmerica well call me a scrub then
The of the legendary moments in martial arts tournaments.
Me and a buddy were at the edge then both started teleporting behind eachother for a ring out screaming.
Makes me feel old when i vivdly have nostalgia about budokai 2 i remember budokai 3 being so different at the time.
This game still looks great it’s crazy
I remember playing this game with my dad a lot. The dragon rush mechanic may be op, but it was fun as hell
Imma be honest as someone that played all the budokai games and not infinite world, the game does get repetitive. Im surprised people are giving it this amount of praise. Budokai was a good series no doubt, and still a staple of my childhood, but unless you play with friends it doesnt really last long for me imo
I swear if the dragon rush was more skill instead of 100 percent luck, Budokai 3 would be a perfect game
I used to play this one throughout middle and highschool. It was a personal favorite
The way I master this game was like none other. The intricate movements when dodging, knowing when and how to dodge. Need to Bring it back
Daaaamn this was a fun game :D My brother and I used to play this together so much haha, and the matches were pretty varied ^^ It was fun using SSJ4 Goku & Vegeta and Omega Shenron, as well as Cooler was really good I think.
My fondest memory of this game was when me and a friend were going back and forth on strikes, blocking, teleporting, then we both backed up at the exact same time and started charging up energy. Just like the show. Was insane
- TODs
- Vanish
- Burst (hyper mode)
- Cutscene combos
The original FighterZ

hearing you played SmackDown Vs Raw & seeing that you’re WWE2K player is a PLUS!!
Bruh cars HIT back in the day what a banger
i played this game so much, its not just best dbz game, but one of the best fighting game ever. and this was first dbz game i ever bought. what a W
B3 and tenkaici was so rad. Great to see it get some love
This is a very well made video ma kaizen, I got here from discord
Youve finally discovered the truly goated fighting game seires
love these videos man💕🔥
Another banger video bro, these are so entertaining pls keep uploading these
The dragon rush was to yes tire your opponent you can do that too with just punches but dragon rush does it immediately.
The best fight game of all times
I remember running through DU grinding for breakthroughs and the black card. Spent the rest of my time in the red ribbon army base. Good times
One technical mechanic doesn't make the game complex. It wasn't that much of a big deal.
Proer canceling allows an actual mix-up game while also allowing longer extended combos but go ahead and lie about it if that makes you happy
I’ve been watching and playing a lot of this game lately. Trying to get those back dash cancels down is no joke! Love this content fam keep it up!
The tenkaichi 4 announcement got me in my practice arc for 4.
Kaizen, you always make fire reviews.
Fellow lookism fan?
mad respect for playing Cars bro
Man shit I was dbz karakot had this amount of indepth moves you can do cause the movements and animation were smooth asf in that game..imagine it with that system..but hopefully budokai 4 delivers lmao
It's not the most basic fighting game, but calling it "complex" is a reach.
Game is super simple, especially the variation in movesets... if you can even call them that.
I had this game but I forgot where it is so I just play Shin Budokai 2 on the PSP
I will consume literally everything Dragon Ball related except the actual show.
I never seen that front cover to Budokai 3. Mines back in the day was a black background with Ssj1 Goku doing a dragon fist
I hate the OST in the HD Collection. That's why I only play the PS2 version of the game.
Say no more. Always have my PS2 copy with me.
I remember having a fucking hard time trying to beat Raditz.
And I also remember going back to that fight, having finished the game, with Goku all powered up, and beating the shit out of Raditz as a Super Sayian 3 (he didn’t even got to touch me)
My disappointment when as a child i bought this game instead of budokai tenkaichi 3 by mistake ;_;
Best dbz game they ever made
Personally, I find the combat of shin Budokai much better. It takes the best of this game and merges it with the best of burst limit. But combos are kept, cancels, etc. And you can throw supers at any time. In my opinion, it flows better. But obviously this game is the goat.
Infinite World and rboth Shin budokais were great but almost nobody played them
I'll always thank Budokais n Ultimate Ninjas for being the rare exceptions for good anime/manga based games. They aren't the only ones but they really standout given how big the frachises r. Always fun seeing u find the science to these games n putting hands on opponents.
Gets even deeper with Infinite World and Shin Budokai.
Dragon Rush feels like the Garlic Jr Arc
This game with a modern reskin and updated roster would be straight fire
The reason I love budokai, is it can be simple or complex. U can play it doing p, p, p, e.. or u can use teleports, cancels, so on
By far the best dbz game I've played Imo or at least tied with tenkaichi 1 absolutely satisfying games
Shoutout Over The Hedge fr
My brother and i play this game all the time ...we usually select world tournament and then choose random players ... The ring out possibilty makes it super fun 😂😂😂
Bad mic, great script, best of luck to you man. New subscriber
Watching that long ass Dragon Rush animation after guessing wrong 3 times was peak salty rage, I'm 30 now and watching it just now gave me rage flashbacks from when I was 13 lol
“what the game Got to make it Complex “ off the rip “ SIDESTEPPING “ 😂
I don't know how anyone could possibly hate on this game. Almost everything about this game is amazing.
You should really check out Infinite Word or Burst Limit, the combat is way deeper but We def need a Budokai remake after the new Tenkaichi one.
good to see people like budokai and not just budokai tenkaichi
was just telling my buddy's this game could be super competitive with all the different interactions
