As an Indian I almost jumped over my screen for HOW RELATABLE THIS IS! Fighting to pay, ordering a larger set and sharing dishes, eating the best, finishing food to the last grain, hoarding condiments, rice and spice is NEVER enough and so on... oh how Indian... and how Bengali this is... we take our rice very seriously!
As a Malay, Im so proud of you Logesh... you represent us the non-orientals/east asian as an Asian... because usually to westerners in USA, asian to them is the east asian looking people... show them that we come in all colours and shape... Im dark skin too, with curly hair and round eyes... and i will forever be proud to be asian
I am Latina and this made me laugh so much! Especially the hoarding of the condiments. We all have a refrigerator drawer just for those! It drives my American sister in law crazy! She occasionally clears my brother's stash and then he goes crazy. I hoard the napkins too. Well the trees are already dead to make them! It's a sin to waste them. 😁
You would be surprised how many Americans hoard condiments and napkins. My husband and I still clean are plates, when growing up we both were told by our mother's not to waste food.
I'm from South Africa, of South Indian descent. Love this! Especially the hot water/ cold water thing.🤷🏾♀️.And my husband fights for the bill all the time🤣🤣
Hey, im malaysian, and melayu But im actually comfortable eat rice using fork😂 Depends on rice types and dishes...i prefer eat using chopsticks which is fork with extra steps😂
Using fork is eating in smaller portions compared to the spoon and also this makes the person to slow down and gives enough time to chew and enjoy the food. This is just my intuition.
I'm malay, I eat rice with fork when there's meat in my plate. I only use one utensil most of the time cuz other hand is on phone. If there's chicken thigh or drumstick, I eat rice with my hand.
As an Indian, most points are completely relatable. My mom would get especially militant about not wasting food and insisting on freshly prepared meals everyday. Hardly any leftovers in my household. I cannot handle spicy food, though.
I loved the "so many kids out in the world...." quote. Any Asian would have gone through that from parents quite often and follow it into the next generation. Keep doing more guys. Love your contents.
My Filipina mother does that too. I remember that there were so many ketchup packets that we gathered from fast food restaurants in our fridge, and we already had a bottle of ketchup at home. Even I sometimes hoard the wet wipes some restaurants give us.
I had that habit for a long time. I don't care for several items but the fiery hot sauces they have in US fast food places are irresistible. Finally at around 50 years of age I have gotten over that habit. I used to tip the waiter heavily and get what I wanted.
OK, not just Asians. Lots of Americans grab the condiments, and any other free giveaways, too. Some of use a spoon instead of a fork for rice and noodles, too 🙂 And yeah after awhile you end up throwing away a lot of those packets that are laying all around. A lot of us also learned to "clean our plates", too. It kind of drives me crazy when people leave food. Since there is only a little, you can eat all of it! I think it's a matter of the time you were raised and where, too.
I'm from India and i can relate to literally everything, especially my parents make me drink lukewarm-hot water all throughout the year to avoid getting sick...
I used to eat rice with spoon and I did try eating rice with fork but then, I realize that I didn't truly get the taste of the rice because my mouth mainly touches metal instead of rice. Since then, I revert to eating rice with my right hand!
I am an Indian staying in the US for over a decade now. While its all relatable, I feel sad when I see the amount of food wastage that happens here. I don't say that all Americans waste food, but in general the percentage of food wasted is definitely more here. I was born to an upper middle class family in India and thankfully I never had a food shortage issue while in India. But the fact that you shouldn't waste food has embedded deep into my DNA. In the US I try all fancy food from around the world. Sometimes I like them, but sometimes some trials fail. But I finish what I buy. I buy just enough groceries so that there is no/very minimum wastage. In restaurants, even if the left over food is small quantity, i get it 'to go'. That's all because when you come from a developing nation, you know the value of food and feels like a crime wasting even a grain of good food.
It's also just basic respect towards something that provides us with life and energy. Feels extremely disrespectful to just throw away an essential life giving thing into the trash without a second thought.
@@payalupman My guy how disconnected are you from your surroundings? Hundreds of millions of people still go hungry at night in India. And millions other have to keep worrying about how they'll be able to get their next meal.
@@payalupman I never intended to disrespect or paint India bad. There are daily wage/seasonal job workers with absolutely zero savings..a broken leg or a prolonged fever, or any such unpredictable hurdles would render them helpless in front of local money lenders and they borrow money from friends and relatives to feed themselves. If you do not know anyone like this in India then be grateful to your blessed surroundings. Every day millions go to sleep with an empty stomach.
:) I learned to drink warm water from Indian culture. It’s not that I’m afraid I’ll get sick, but definitely my stomach works more comfortable and digest better when I drink warm than when I drink cold drink. So definitely good practice 😊
@@joycegreer9391 did you know there are several different types of rice? Each has its own texture, aroma, and taste. My favorite is jasmine rice. Not only does it have a nice fragrance, it's also light and fluffy. I could eat it just by itself.
I am American, but grew up immersed in Hispanic and Asian culture, spent time living at a Thai temple, and this explains everything! I relate SO much to the Asian guy lol
Malaysians are always planning out their next meal even before their current meal is over! Also, we sometimes split a meal across a couple of venues because "this place is great for the meal.. but we're going to another place for desserts".. well, just because we value the meal over ... just about everything else!
Ha ha ..here also in India, we belong to Assam, extreme North East India. On breakfast table we discuss about lunch and while having lunch we will plan our dinner. Its so very common with the Asians..😂
Great video again. Love it. Everything you showed about the Malaysian habit is sooo true. A few more to add. In Malaysia when a person received the bill and decided to pay for it full, those he/she treated would always like to put up the sick joke of saying, "Thanks, but if I know you're going to belanja, I would have ordered more expensive dishes". Another habit: When two Malaysians are seated at a restaurant/eatery and one asked the other, "So, what do you like? What do you want me to get for you?" The other will habitually answer, "Oh, it's okay. Anything will do. I am happy with anything", even though he/she has something in mind. However, many of these habits are more prevalent and pervasive among the older generations. Younger Malaysians are more like the Americans now 😅
Hahaha this is such a fun video. All true and the bloopers are priceless. Fighting to pay and hoarding the condiments ( and dont forget the little packets of salt ,pepper and sugar and those little tubs of creamer and half n half..) really made me laugh.Thank you 😍 Logesh and Rachel you berdua ni pandai berlakun lah.Next time balik Malaysia bole pergi audition untuk Drama Minggu Ini kat tv 😆 Oh piling food on peoples' plate to make them eat more is spot on too.Malaysians are like Italian grandmothers. They wont be happy till you're stuffed haha

Hey guys! I'm a brazilian and I've been living in India for a few months now and omg hahaha I loved this video. I noticed the same differences when I got here. God bless your family!
Omg..so funny and so true. Logesh, you are so Malaysian and yet so American. Most Malaysian men don't cook at all and yet you are the cook in the household. Great video.
@@suhaila6204 not really. Boys in my uni usually would "elect" one cook in the house that makes food for everyone while others buy the ingredients, whereas the girls would either rotate or see if they're in the mood to cook. Most girls i know know how to cook but just lazy or always in the mood for fast food. Meanwhile boys are not much of a foodie so they can get by with just "nasi bujang". Most of them don't even cook at all at their parents' home.
Haha, my Asian hb cooks because I can't make his fav dishes. The spice tolerance level plays a major part here. If I can't taste what I'm cooking, how do I know whether I'm doing it right? 😅 Our cravings and preferences are so wildly different that we have given up trying to find a middle road. He can't make my dishes either. If we crave something, we cook it ourselves.

Setiap kali diorang bawa paket sos tapi buang je, saya ambillah, tak lama lepastu saya buat tabung untuk mereka yang taknak makanan paket tu letak kat pintu locker saya yang ada tabung buatan sendiri. Saya kalau sarapan saya makan biskut kraker dengan paket sos je sebagai ganti jem. Tengah hari pulak saya masak nasi goreng pucuk ubi, pakai rempah paket yg besar skali je, bawang putih & merah tanam, garam. Simple tapi sedap & berbaloi. Saya ni berjimat cermat & sekarang saya ni pon dh kurus, syukurlah ada pengalaman macam ni.!
I'm Malaysian and my husband is American (married for 5 years)... and we can definitely relate! My mom sent us this video saying she couldn't stop laughing! One thing that my husband was surprised by was the fact that we Malaysians eat a pretty elaborate meal for breakfast with curry, sambal, etc. no matter how early in the morning. We would wake up at 7 am and he would just want a bagel or toast with scrambled eggs. Meanwhile, I would be eating thosai with multiple curries and chutney. And on some days nasi lemak with ayam goreng 😂
I'm American, but I feel like my expat experience in Asia has changed me so much, that I'm second guessing if I'm culturally American after this. The condiments, spicy food, finishing meals and taking turns at covering the bill are so relatable. Not to mention the amount of warm tea I drink, even when it's hot in summer.
I see your wife has got used to eating with her right hand😊Most westerner eat with the fork in the left hand and knife in the right! We lived in Malaysia for a couple of years and thoroughly loved it,we enjoyed learning and adapting to their ways, like ‘have you eaten?’ Instead of ‘how are you?’.😃Loved it!❤
After watching this, I realized I'm leaning more towards Malaysian than American since I grew up in an American/Arab community for a decade. When it comes to food, I'm siding with Rachel since if there's leftover in the fridge, I'll just heat it up and eat, especially if my mom cooks gulai lemak ciliapi :3
As an Indian, I relate to the leftover thing. Leftover rice, leftover bhindi, leftover potato-paneer-peas fry, leftover from the day before. And don't even talk about the chicken. And it's nothing leftover that's store-bought but home-cooked. Like, boiled rice from yesterday, heat up and fry to make lemon rice. Beautiful. Logesh and Rachel, amazing.
I'm post-soviet, and I relate to Logesh in everything except for the spicy food and maybe leftovers. Especially the last part, "But it's free!"... That's kinda weird because I look like the male version of Rachel :))) Looks like white Americans really are something else
LOVE THE BLOOPERS! However I must say that this is VERY Malaysian vs American for certain cases, particularly the "give more than needed" and "fighting for the bill" part. However, "going Dutch(?)" (splitting bills) are becoming common for young adults in Malaysia, especially in the capital city because many young ones do not have enough to "settle the entire bill"; that being said, there are still occasions it will happen, especially midnight yam cha at mamak. Congratulations Kumaar family. Those are so spot on, especially the hoarding condiments hahaha... I am guilty for hoarding McD black pepper as they are still exceptionally good compared to store bought ones. Not sure why. haha.
i will tapau or takeaway food by myself put in plastic bag as much as possible especially kenduri or wedding event or open house...mostly poor people do that right ?
I am not hoarding condiments but the eateries always give us more than needed. So I have a pile at home. And to make me repentful was when I found out some of the condiments are empty! The pass by rats enjoy the feast huhuhu.
Based on this... I'm asian. At least from a culinary point of view. Also, fighting over the check. Maybe that last bit is just because I'm old and can afford it, now. Great video, folks! Subscribed!
Malaysian malay here. When I was in the States for college, I had this American girlfriend. On our 3rd date out (if I remember correctly), we went for chinese. Then the spoon and fork thing came up. Of course I use the spoon and she used fork. She noticed it but still used fork. But after a few months with me, she figure out it is indeed easier to use spoon for rice. Now she still use spoon when eating rice years after we broke up. Proud of my "legacy" lol hope she thinks of me every time she eats rice haha
We had a big laugh (and sympathy as well) when a colleague from the US accidentally bite cabai melaka (small green chilli) during steam boat dinner not so long ago. It took him like 15 minutes to recover . Poor guy.....anyway, this video is best ever for me, well done.
reminds me of my colleagues, they were asking me for a nice lunch place. so i brought them to a lalapan restaurant (rice with the choice of meat, fish or chicken plus vegetables and sambal). we have a choice of usual, hot and extra hot sambal. in any lalapan restaurant, sambal is the MAIN thing. some were asking for hot and extra hot sambal. after our lunch, our lead (Team Lead) was telling me he will never go back to the place but my indonesian and australian colleagues were grateful i show them the place and definitely come back. my lead was telling me the sambal was killing him 😄😄
Dad (this is in the 1970's) brought over a German colleague for dinner. Mom served fried beef Kerala style which includes a generous dose of chilies, mustard, onion, etc .....The German turned tomato red, sweating profusely and we thought he would have a heart attack. He recovered some time later and asked for more beef fry but with sugar on top.
Lol, so much of fun watching this video, seriously truly Malaysian attitudes and I believe by right now both of you are already adjusting the culture shock.
Man, this is hilarious and totally relatable. 😂 We Indians enjoy the taste of every piece of food we get served. And we (On an average) can eat a lot, that I can’t deny. 😂
That was fun! On board ship, at the end of Ramadan, the Pakistani crew sometimes prepared a special meal for the Chief Officer and me (Second Engineer) as they appreciated us being sensible in assigning duties during that time. Although they provided cutlery for us Brits, it was mostly eaten with the help of Naan bread. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it, and to this day I often eat curries in a similar fashion. Other cultures may have different ways, but they are not necessarily better or worse, but they are worth trying (I had to quickly learn how to use chopsticks in Japan).
I have always considered myself American-spirited, but I gotta go with the Malaysian on this one hahaha well, not 100%, but still, especially with the one about too little rice haha, thank you so much for this video, too much fun :D
The difference is that "Kumaar Family" is a Catholic family (both Logesh and Rachel, and their sons are born Catholics) while "Jai & Sam" is a Muslim family (Jai is a born Muslim while Sam converted to Islam) but still, it would be amazing to see these two families meet each other for the first time!

One thing this reminded me of though is a scene from "The Joy Luck Club" when the mother invites her daughter's white husband for dinner, and comments that her dish isn't salty enough... the Asian family members say "No no it's fine" but the white guy says "Oh no problem" and goes ahead to pour soya sauce in the dish!!! You really have to be Asian to get that!

Its commonly chinese tradition. When eating together or drinking together. We will never ask the one who in few run never take the initiative to pay the bill. That kind of person is just a free loader. We hate free loader. If someone from the start of invitation says he/she dont have the money is okay, we tolerate that and still keep invite him/her. Treating a friend is nice thing
I live in Japan and I prepare white rice for my wife all the time. Try moving the rice around in the water with your hands. then drain the water out. Add more water again and move the rice around again. Keep doing this process until the water is almost clear then start cooking the rice. See if you notice the difference in the taste.
White guy living in Asia (SG now, BKK before this). I have always hoarded condiments....I have bowls full of various packets...chilli sauce, ketchup, soy, sambal, salt, pepper, etc. Many of which I will open and dump into the containers in the fridge...never have to buy new ones, though I do wash them out from time to time. And napkins and straws....save them all. The spice level varies by individual...and by type of spice...give some Thai's a bit of cinnamon and watch them react like it is a ghost pepper. And maybe it is a SG thing, but almost every time I pay for a group meal, the Singaporeans are the ones insisting I accept Paylah for their portions. I did learn to eat rice (and most things really) with a spoon now, use the fork to push it on if needed. Much easier. As for finishing the food on y plate....I have been a member of the clean plate club since I learned to feed myself. I was raised that if you take it, you eat it. I do not enforce this with my kid...whatever they don't eat get to be my second helping, and I do the cooking, so it wont be anything I don't like. :) The room temp water is something I have never gotten used to though. Either ice cold, or steaming hot. Anything room temp has been sitting out too long. I concede that drinking too much liquid that is too cold too quickly can cause issues, but if you are just drinking casually, as with a meal, it wont be an issue.
Yes, one thing for sure, we Malaysians love free goods or anything lah. that's definitely Malaysian. All in all, since Malaysia is so diverse in ethnicity, the variety of cultures makes us proud Malaysians. but one thing for sure, the food here in Malaysia has way more taste and MSG (hopefully Uncle Roger will notice this, finger cross) and indeed delicious to every bit hence that's why Logesh finishes all his every bit of the food not just because of the world hunger per se but we've been thought that way since we were kids. Spices play a crucial role in developing some parts of brain associated with pain ... And makes you pain tolerance... Like you can be mentally strong and react Swiftly and not loose your cool under pressure and stress . Start small .. like a single green chilli with your plate .. take small bites and build it up from there Also helps with mood swings
So true so true so true!! Logesh, Malaysia Boleh! Love the keep the extra sauce in the bag part....do it all the time with other stuff too and it's never spicy enough....
I am asians, but I mostly do the western part. (Except eating rice with forks) For one, I always insist not to mess with how the food is cooked, if it's a good food, it should taste good out from the kitchen, you don't need to add more sauce.
I eat almost everything with my hands including rice 😎 It's better to use my hands which I'm sure whether they are clean or not compared to a spoon which went through uncountable mouths & not sure how much they were cleaned before they are given to us Edit: btw those bloopers are super fun. Try adding them to every video 👍

About not wasting...spot on. Even if you don't like it, finish it - it's all nutrition and good for you. I won't even leave a grain of rice on the plate. About the rice.... everything has to be eaten with rice, so the plate keeps getting topped up with more rice so you can finish everything. Eating with a fork...no thank you. I'll eat with a spoon or my fingers - right hand of course. And I'm not even Asian... but I've been living here most of my life. And I still can't handle chillies - Asians are built different.

Not just Malaysians, we are like that too.
Yeah most asians

Same for Indians
Yeah true for vietnam as well
I used to eat rice with spoon and I did try eating rice with fork but then, I realize that I didn't truly get the taste of the rice because my mouth mainly touches metal instead of rice. Since then, I revert to eating rice with my right hand!
Food without rice don't taste good enough 😂 and eaten with hand is even more tasty and satisfying! 😆
I feel my stomach filled only when I eat with my ✋.......BTW I and almost all of the Indians wash their hands before eating
Same me I eat with hand's but I tried to eat with spoon but then I felt Maja nahi aa raha hai and I'm eating with hands again 😂
Yes. Right hand FTW!
Eating food with the right hand is a Somali tradition also.
I was about to comment the same thing.
It was embedded deep into my DNA because of Sanji.
:) I learned to drink warm water from Indian culture. It’s not that I’m afraid I’ll get sick, but definitely my stomach works more comfortable and digest better when I drink warm than when I drink cold drink. So definitely good practice 😊
Asians likes to eat rice. Sometimes a plate of rice isn't enough for me 😍
But it's also torture because by focusing on rice, I couldn't eat delicious side dishes during iftar! 😩

As an Indian, I completely understand the difference in our culture and i loved it 💕
Malaysians are always planning out their next meal even before their current meal is over!
@@jyotiranjandas7058 So true i am from south India Bangalore, even we do the same, we speak about lunch while having breakfast :)

Aww. I need some Asian friends.😭 so cool.
Bruh, I remember my mother's friend would take us to this nice Korean restaurant then take us to this cafe to have coffee and dessert.
Fighting to pay and hoarding the condiments ( and dont forget the little packets of salt ,pepper and sugar and those little tubs of creamer and half n half..) really made me laugh.Thank you 😍

The laughing together at the end was the best. You’re a beautiful couple. God bless you both.
Omg..so funny and so true. Logesh, you are so Malaysian and yet so American. Most Malaysian men don't cook at all and yet you are the cook in the household. Great video.
I think of the opposite than your statement. Most of boys in Malaysia know how to cook rather than girls who go to university and further studies...
We Asians are very much hospitable and value our food and people around us ❤️
As a person from a Caribbean country, everything Logesh did spoke to me.
I am Indian and I laughed so much as this video is so relatable 🤣

Tengah hari pulak saya masak nasi goreng pucuk ubi, pakai rempah paket yg besar skali je, bawang putih & merah tanam, garam. Simple tapi sedap & berbaloi. Saya ni berjimat cermat & sekarang saya ni pon dh kurus, syukurlah ada pengalaman macam ni.!
Chilli JAM? Haiyaa!
I can so relate to that!!! I complain to Rachel all the time that I'm so bored with American breakfast.
Aiiyoo scrambled eggs mana cukup..kene ada nasi lemak..🤣
@@hairis835 scramble egg makan dengan nasi panas dan kicap manis. Sedap oooo
Born and raised in Midwest USA. Never been to Asia. All the same, except it's usually coffee not tea.
I see your wife has got used to eating with her right hand😊Most westerner eat with the fork in the left hand and knife in the right! We lived in Malaysia for a couple of years and thoroughly loved it,we enjoyed learning and adapting to their ways, like ‘have you eaten?’ Instead of ‘how are you?’.😃Loved it!❤
American table etiquette is different. They cut first, put the knife aside and switch fork from left to right to eat.
That's kinda weird because I look like the male version of Rachel :)))

Not sure why. haha.
As Logesh mentioned, because its free

Laughed my ass out reading this one....🤣🤣🤣...
reminds me of my colleagues, they were asking me for a nice lunch place. so i brought them to a lalapan restaurant (rice with the choice of meat, fish or chicken plus vegetables and sambal). we have a choice of usual, hot and extra hot sambal. in any lalapan restaurant, sambal is the MAIN thing. some were asking for hot and extra hot sambal. after our lunch, our lead (Team Lead) was telling me he will never go back to the place but my indonesian and australian colleagues were grateful i show them the place and definitely come back. my lead was telling me the sambal was killing him 😄😄
Dad (this is in the 1970's) brought over a German colleague for dinner. Mom served fried beef Kerala style which includes a generous dose of chilies, mustard, onion, etc .....The German turned tomato red, sweating profusely and we thought he would have a heart attack. He recovered some time later and asked for more beef fry but with sugar on top.
Poor soul... Give him some milk 😅

We Indians enjoy the taste of every piece of food we get served.

As an Indian I almost jumped over my screen for HOW RELATABLE THIS IS!
The room temp water is something I have never gotten used to though. Either ice cold, or steaming hot. Anything room temp has been sitting out too long. I concede that drinking too much liquid that is too cold too quickly can cause issues, but if you are just drinking casually, as with a meal, it wont be an issue.
haha i love the part splitting the check vs fighting to pay the most.. 🤣🤣 should've asked for chilli potong too haha...
@@j2174 I meant what I said. Uk had some bland ass food back in the day too and they were boiling their meats as well. So you can't say Americans cause America is full of mixed races especially the ones they may have this opinion induced by their immigrant parents/family etc. It is explicitly white people and not all of them yeah alot of them use more than S + but compared to other countries and races they are still behind quite a lot. Also white people doesn't just refer to the pigmentation of someone's skin for example yes there are a lot of white Hispanics I'm referring to white people originally from Britain and the ones that came to America etc. Those are white people. And anyone from any culture would agree that the definition of white people equates to that.
