Metropolis - A Hidden Gem Of Japanese Animation

  • 52 years after Tezuka’s manga was published, an animated film adaptation of his work was produced. I find this film fascinating for multiple reasons, from how its many ideas and plot threads come full circle with the incorporation of many elements present in Lang’s original film, as well as the timeless nature of its anti-fascist themes. But most of all, I find it baffling that this film has been all but forgotten by modern audiences and fans of animation. While we still remember and revere classic films like Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and the works of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, we’ve somehow neglected and downright forgotten this gem of a film that came out right in the midst of the western anime boom.
Metropolis remains a hidden gem, and the truth is...it never should have been one.

Hey everybody, sorry about the wait on new videos but my working on the Dracula video, combined with the release of the new consoles has made work insane. So far the Dracula video is sitting around 30 minutes long and there's still so much more to go so that one is being worked on simultaneously with other stuff going forward. This video was fun to work on even though it took a bit longer than expected. I wish more people could see this movie, it deserves to be more widely known as we near its 20th anniversary.

This animation even with scenes out of context makes this a hidden gem even more, especially with the hair sakuga.
And the song, "I Can't Stop Loving You" to top it off gives me goosebumps and makes this ending kinda...melancholic.

When I first saw this movie, I was really little and only saw the tail end where the city started to fall apart and “l can’t stop loving you” played. For ages I had this scene plastered in my mind and had no clue to the life of me what this movie was called or about.
Then I saw it for sale in JB and with no hesitation bought it, watched it fully for the first time and was mystified!!
Truely a work of art 😌

I'll never forget the Bandai/Emotion opening, it moved me. It's so strange how most anime lovers haven't watched this, and yes it's hard to find. I was lucky to get from blockbusters as a kid. I'm determined to make younger generations watch it. It's beautiful. The sound track, characters, voice acting, cinematography. This film should be studied.

Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful analysis. To be honest, I was traumatized by this film seeing it back in late 2001.
That audio dissonance of that Ray Charles classic song against a terrible image of the Ziggurat falling apart while Kenichi was holding on to Tima's hand was so heartbreaking. It really hit me hard. And after 23 years, I cried again watching it. My wife with a beautiful heart noticed this and got angry at this movie and doesn't want to hear that song "I can't stop loving you".

Watch this when I'm at around 6th grade. I remember having strange feeling I never have had with characters in this movie. The characters are strangely "understandable" as my brain back then could recognize. Its a kind of something I dare call empathy, The feeling of the characters in that situation are in. One of the best anime I will always kept going back to get the same feeling over and over.

Great video! Watched the movie for the first time yesterday and it was absolutely breathtaking. I just wish I'd seen it in theatres as it was clearly made with this in mind - it's very hard to see what's going on in a lot of the super-zoomed-out shots on a TV, for example.

Finally watched this movie today after knowing about it for so long. The first time I was exposed to this film was when I saw the trailer. The trailer was an extra in a dvd for Spider-Man the New Animated Series. Those extras had other trailers for other anime movies such as Memories. Those trailers always stuck with me, but the trailers always freaked me out as a little kid, but having finally watched them, I can say they are one of a kind.

I watched this at an arthouse theater in my town, back in 2000-2001, and after enjoying it so much at the theater, of course I was going to get this as soon as it dropped on DVD.
The first press was a nice cardboard, fold design, but as with most paper products it's delicate and colors smudge and chafe after repeated handling.
I watched it a total of 2 or 3 times and it has been tucked away for about 20 years. I think about it one in a blue moon and haven't layer eyes on it in years. It's good to know I still have it...now knowing it's not so easy to find on stream or any other method, save from piracy.

I never really understood this film as a child it was always just on in the background however, I recently rewatched it and with all my life experiences, I view it extremely differently, like this film was the crossover point between classic animation and modern Japanese animation and I think like the story represents this shift from analogue to digital.

Great video and a great movie. The only thing I would nitpick is that the "western anime boom" mentioned in the video is a very US-centric view, which is fine, it's just not representative of "the west". That boom happened in certain parts of Europe in the 70s, with a second wave in the early to mid-90s. The early 2000s were actually pretty quiet on that front by comparison. Again, just a nitpick!

Did we watch the same movie/
Its artistically beautiful, and I would say its up there in animated movies I saw in just the art department. Its story leaves...alot to be desired.
On paper it seems straight forward, but theres so many various subplots going on, and they are either left unresolved or poorly resolved. We've been building up to the revolution and now that it happened, its resolution happened in a jump cut.
I'll admit I saw the movie a long time ago and maybe I need to watch it again. I can watch it for its visuals, but I cannot say watch it for the story.

    • @soggyworm8054
      @soggyworm8054 2 роки тому

Yeah, I find it odd how most reviews of this movie don't mention how it's a veeeeery tedious movie to watch, especially on rewatch. The pacing isn't great, it tries to tackle more themes than it can handle, and the story can be a bit confusing. I know it's trying to be thoughtful, but it comes off as the people behind the film biting on more than they can chew. While the art and direction mostly make up for it (I'll forget everything I dislike abt the film when that climax hits, it's such a satisfying thing to watch), it probably should've stuck to a more linear story.

(This comment is mainly for christians who have watched the films akira and metropolis, or anyone with an open mind who is respectful) i must add this! im sure only very few people have caught onto this, but katsuhiro otomo is a prophetic writer, and it seems tezuka and his son are too, and although they arent christians (at least from what we know), and it is fiction, there is a little bit of reality in what he writes, God can and does still speak through whoever and whatever he wants to, and there still is prophetic elements that are actually happening in the predicted time frame, akira predicted the 2020 olympics woukd be held in tokyo, and would be cancelled due to an unforseen event, it also predicted the ammount of voilence and lawlessness we see today accurately, meteopolis seems to predict things that are starting to happen in real life right now as well, including robots being idolized, worshiped, and set up as gods, transhumanism, destructive protests, corrupt politicians, ect, theres also much of the same themes of violence and lawlessness that are seen in metropolis, much like akira, i could go on about the prophetic things i noticed in this film, its a whole list of things i think i could make an entire video about, its all very interesting! There's an even deeper level to it than most may not realize! Prophetic writers tend to really grab peoples attention for a moment, but then are forgotten about because people unconsciously avoid difficult truths, or its hard for people to grasp these things, jules vern was another prophetic writer and wrote about submarines way before they ever existed! If you have read this far, Godbless! 😊

It’s late 1920’s Germany, the Nazis were the villains, the underground rebels are are the communists. And you see them still replicate violence, from a liberation aspect. So it’s not a one sided viewpoint, but the mardukes are most definitely the Nazis and duke red is an obvious hitlerite character. The underground rebels are trying to overthrow Duke red. Even their propaganda is communist themed. Idk how you’d do this video and not even talk about that thematic undertone.

Hidden? Not really. I got a fair amount of publicity. Gem? Definitely not. Big disappointment. Boring, muddled story and ugly, uninteresting characters.
