maaaan my heart was torn that Kenichi fell in love with a Goddamn robot (meaning things would never go how they should) tried his absolute best to help her and keep her safe only for her to die. Pain.

I just watched it for the first time this week and that scene hurt. It would be one thing if like Kenichi had been too late or he wasn't strong enough to pull her up, but what tore me up is that Tima chooses to let go.

The part in the movie where "I Can't Stop Loving You" plays alone is reason enough to watch this movie, it's so beautiful and sad and chaotic and cathartic, all at the same time. And the duality between the loving and wholesome nature of the song versus the complete and utter destruction of the city being destroyed and imploding in on itself makes it such an odd choice of song to play given the situation, but god I can't think of a better fit for it even if I tried.

Rock was my favorite part of this movie ! The thing is..Rock is a recurrent character in a LOT of Tezuka's mangas and I know him from there so...maybe I just filled in the blanks on my own. The thing with Rock is he's almost always an adoptive son (usually to a mean rich guy). This character has been in this position for DECADES !
Even in this new movie he's still stuck as a "fake" son. He can try his hardest to please his dad but..that man is never gonna see him as a son...So in a way..he is this guy's robot. And maybe thats why he hates them so much.

  • @HanasRoom

Man isn't it a little wild that a man on an island before the time of the internet was already thinking about technology bringing human greed to an evolved form? Cyborg009, Astro Boy, and Kikaider are all stories about androids, and there are similar themes of human manipulation between these characters but they're all so different in nuance. This video was cathartic for me too, I think I finally figured out what has just been pissing me off... Happy new years, and may the new season of Attack On Titan set the stage for the animes of 2022.

It is tiresome. There are better ways of expressing these issues, but as the video author states this was a video to get those raw emotions out there. To me this video falls below the quality this channel is known for, as it only attacks the current system. Blames the reds, corpo scum and then calls it a day. Not much of the why things are the way the are, and why people vote red. I've never seen Metropolis, but maybe now I will give it a watch after this video.
Disclaimer, because I know people are going to dog on me over my comment. I would prefer a more socialized system, favoring the working class which will lift all people up to better tomorrows. I care more about the climate change more than anything. The capitalist system is definitely one of the root causes of climate change, but not the only symptom.

I love the way you analyzed the very end where Tima is hanging and grabbing onto Kenichis hand. Your take on what she meant when she said who am I right before falling was super interesting! I could be totally wrong but when she said who am I and felt it totally click for me, like you said in the video she had been saying that over and over again the whole movie having this existential crisis with her identity. I feel like she tried to grab on as hard as she could to Kenichi‘s hand but that final “who am I” clicked into her mind an awakening and for a second she didn’t know if she was Kenichi or herself which triggered the epiphany that she was everyone at the same time, she was a god waking up realizing she was one of many incarnations of its existence. Watched this last night and completely fell in love with it.

I think this is one of your best videos, so wholesome. Unfortunately my first encounter with the movie was... at a time of intellectual immaturity and I couldn't appreciate it at all. Now that I've seen many of Tezuka's other works, it's time for re-evaluation :D
I love his characters btw, they're archetypes and there's a set of themes he likes and always uses.

Somehow it so often comes down to how androids, are acting more human, then humans of any institutional background... fascinates me... 🤖
Metropolis by Fritz Lang is one of my absolute favorites, I just love they say : the connection between the head of a civilization, (The ruling class/Intlligentia) and the Hand (The working Klass) must be the heart! This is so on the point, on what's going wrong with most of the world.

It’s always nice to see other people see this wonderful masterpiece of a film. I wanted to throw my hat into the ring in regards to the question purposed at the end of the video, of what it means to be human, or to have humanity. Metropolis ask this question a lot and I found that after pondering the film after many rewatched that the film answers this question, and that answer is symbolized through the character of Kenichi. Kenichi is probably one of the most well executed characters that I have ever seen in any form of fiction and I don’t say that to be hyperbolic. Genuinely the way he is handled and how he is able to represent this super complex concept like humanity is perplexing as it is amazing. Kenichi is very much defined by who he is rather than what he is, which for comparison is the opposite of Rock, who rather than being the antagonist to Kenichi, is more of a foil to him. Rock is defined himself by being a Marduk and being Duke Red’s Right hand man and from his unwavering loyalty to his adoptive father he lost his humanity, ironically becoming more robotic than any of the machines in the film. Kenichi on the other hand is driven by his purity and just willingness to learn and understand. We aren’t given a lot of information to Kenichi’s background other than he’s an assistant detective to his Uncle, he’s from Japan, and that his parents aren’t in the picture anymore, but aside from that we aren’t shown or told anything about what Kenichi is, but rather we are shown who he is and that who is the embodiment of what it truly means to be human, to have humanity. Kenichi values and tries to understand the unfamiliar world around him, and he sympathetic to other people, even if the actions of those people are ones he doesn’t agree with, I.E Atlas’ Revolution which results in the destruction of many robots. He isn’t infallible either though, he can only watch as the world unfolds around him with very little input in terms of influence, however a little doesn’t mean none. There is one character that Kenichi’s influence has the most impact on and that’s Tima, through him Tima was able to learn and gain her own humanity through who Kenichi was, despite what she was. Their entire bond is symbolic of this, both literally and metaphorically. The first thing Kenichi does at the sight of Tima without question, is to help and protect her despite being giving a different objective and through out the rest of the film he tries his best to protect and keep her safe not because he has to, but because of the humanity within him gives him all the justification to help others. What I means to be human or to have humanity is to unconditionally help work towards bettering those around you and yourself in hopes to have a prosperous life and future, which is exactly what Kenichi does at the end of the film when he decides to stay in the city and rebuild Tima, to hopefully start a newer brighter future, that exist purely the reason having a better, more prosperous life.
Sorry if none of this makes any sense or is incoherent. I feel like it is really difficult to articulate with words how Metropolis masterfully symbolizes a single character with such a deep and meaningful concept, I feel as if watching the movie again and studying the characters and how they interact is a better way to grasp this very complicated idea, but ya that was just my two cents. I love Metropolis and I love Kenichi as a character, he’s definitely a character with the most depth I’ve seen in any form of fiction.

This guy said Rock was a weak villain, but honestly I think he's perfect. His personality is the polar opposite of Tima, and seemingly represents everything Tima isnt. Until you realize that if Kenichi never found her, she'd be just like him. He represents a dark mirror of Tima's potential future that Duke Red wanted to make a reality: A living weapon, and absolute hollow shell of a person. Rock's story is of a child losing his humanity, Tima's story is of a machine discovering her own. Another thing I feel worth mentioning is what the three villains, Rock, Duke Red, and Atlas (who definitely counts as a villain imo) all have in common. An obsession with something they romanticize and can never obtain. For Rock it's his dad's approval, Duke's is to turn Tima, his own child, into a literal god. Atlas is obsessed with this perverse idea of a revolution. Which brings us back to Kenichi, he is literally the perfect protagonist. He doesnt romanticize or view anything under such a corrupt worldview. His love for Tima is pure. His connection to her is pure. It's not corrupted or tainted by any of the viewpoints virtually all the other characters have.
