I couldn't help but just laugh out loud because... it is *utterly* alien to myself as a Western culture Canadian. To think in such a way. I find Japanese and other asian nation's concept of shame very fascinating. It is almost relatable in a way, but it seems very intensified compared to ours. To die before one's parents, the thought that that could be a disrespectful thing is unfathomable in a Western style of thinking... I have a hard time grasping it really. But that's the beauty of different cultures in the world.

I feel like Paprika was a vastly under appreciated film.
It got a remake by Nolan that got universal acclaim.
In 2006 I think it was. I got to see Paprika at one of it's First Ever Premiers in Washington D.C., at the Cherry Blossom a Festival. And Satoshi Kon Presented it us Attendees. The Reception it got was Great.

I think it's because people didn't know how to process the fantastical when it came out. The reason why Nolan got success from his interpretation was probably because most audiences literally couldn't fathom dream machines and symbolism literally consuming real life. They had to have it simplified into 'we're in a dream in a dream'.
It still is, to me it's the greatest work of animation ever. The idea of animation being this boundless field of creativity and imagery is best encapsulated by the breakneck journey through so many different worlds and themes throughout the movie while somehow finding the throughline that pieces it all together.
I think Perfect Blue has picked up a lot of steam in popular culture but Paprika still doesn't seem to have elevated to "must-see" status like Ghibli films have garnered.
Hand-drawn animation is SO SPECIAL! We are literally seeing artists' work come to life and then be immortalized!!!

This is not an in-depth documentary. It's slapdash and self-serving, impossible to sort out what one is looking at. Though I'm familiar with many of the works mentioned, I am left with little new information about them, other than the desire to go elsewhere to find out more -- and precious little in the way of clues about how to look for them. Everything in the way of source material is glanced at only in passing. @STEVEM, you love the material. I get that. You know the mechanics of editing; I get that, too. I wish you would partner this love of the material with someone who actually knows how to make a documentary.

Millennium Actress is hands down my favorite film of all time. I don't think anything else will ever beat it.
Just want to give you credit in an area that gets overlooked. The thumbnail for this video is stupidly well made! The contrasting colours and how clean the images have been blended together. It makes for one hell of an eye-catcher.
I collaged it together myself before starting this project in a full i had a vision of it being like pealing back layers of Kon's work while capturing that atmosphere

Millennium Actress is my favourite Kon movie.
I was so heartbroken when he died. I remember how an artist on deviantart drew a tribute to Kon where he was the astronaut at the end of Millennium Actress. Totally broke me. It's been 10 years but I'm still not over his death. He's the only celebrity I've mourned for this long. He an old have lived until 80 or 90. He deserved a long life

Satoshi's final words to his family and friends were brutal yet so honest. i`m sure i'm not the only one who cried...
I watched Perfect Blue at such a pivotal point in my life and it's been such an inspiration to me, crazy to think he thought it to be his least greatest work.
Also, this was so beautifully done, had me in tears at the end.
I'm absolutely delighted that this video was recommended to me. I recently referred a bunch of my friends to Kon's work-the 10th anniversary of his death being a major reason why- and everyone seemed to love the projects they watched. All of his major projects have clearly stood the test of time; it's worth mentioning that the friends I mentioned aren't even all anime fans (some of them even had a slight aversion the medium) yet Kon's work broke through that barrier flawlessly. There aren't many still-working directors/writers in the industry left that have such a strong vision as Kon had (Masaaki Yuasa comes to mind) but perhaps the age of streaming may lead to more of those creators coming to the forefront in the future.
This video is an excellent documentation of Kon's creative process and history, paired with some great analysis as well. I really hope that it blows up!
Also, a fellow man of Trash Taste I see...
Kons influences were fairly Hollywood based and I thinK that makes him an easier starting point for people who aren't as familiar with anime. He's also a really great film maker in his own rights with a great collection of movies .
The trash taste podcast is fun but I found them talking about how the movie effects them more convincing than me saying it considering they are famous , thank you for watching
@@Stevem That's definitely a fair point; his movies are weird as all hell but not weird in a stereotypical 'anime' way. I was pleasantly surprised to see that one of the people who I mentioned who generally disliked anime ended up binging Paranoia Agent in a day and loved it.
Among other artists, satoshi kon might be the one whose lifetime works I've almost seen/read all. From his 4 feature films, paranoia agent, the ohayou short film, magnetic rose that he wrote, to the books like dream fossil, tropics of the sea and opus. The man's inspired me so much and I'm so glad you put the time to make this video to commemorate his decade passing and tell more things about him that I'd love to hear.
Paprika was one of the best films I've ever seen. What I loved was that Satoshi Kon understood the subconscious mind.

It's kind of perverse to say, but the most inspiring aspect of Kon's life is how he died. He had work yet to do, but he achieved what he wanted, was content with his life, and faced death with as much dignity as he could manage.

Having been a life long fan and sometimes animator/director now adrift in the horrors of this unending year, hearing this recollection not just of the man's work but of his struggles and his life touches me with inspiration I wasn't expecting, and many a tear in a story I thought I knew. The Satoshi Kon problem remains that his story isn't told nearly often enough, and I'm glad for you helping to rectify such a state. Cheers man, subbed.

Satoshi Kon was a great filmmaker. His art style of depicting realistic characters is timeless and he was well ahead of his time with his ideas. Millennium Actress is my favorite film from him. That introduction song is just so innocent, beautiful, and sad.

I hate the fact not a lot of new anime fans don’t know about him. I feel like not a lot of people know him or the work that he did. Kon was such an amazing man, I will forever love all of him and his work
I miss those days where manga and anime is more about the story and less about the harem
He worked with so many of my favorites and I never even knew. Rest easy, Satoshi Kon, such a small number of works but every single one is a masterpiece.
The first 60 seconds alone made me remember just how much I LOOOOOOOOVE this guy's movies!!! He was so talented, a VISONARY! He passed way too soon... T.T
Satoshi Kon is a legendary director. His worst movie is still an 8/10 and his passion in directing and animating are inspirational. His works are so beautiful and tell different stories of people who are heard.
We will forever miss him and his legacy will never be forgotten. He is my GOAT and I hope his family and friends are happy knowing that even if he himself left feeling unfinished, he has inspired many and brings joy to those who enjoy animation, and proves that this is not a genre, but a medium that can be used to the fullest.

I already knew about his death, but hearing all his thoughts at the end of the video brought me to tears. It's so unfair that such a brilliant man suffered such a horrible and untimely fate.

I have now watched every single one of your essays and being an animation director myself I would love to see a film inspired, or completely based on, your way of making these videos. I can’t wrap my head around what the hell it is you do to make them so hypnotic and fascinating! Who you are you? Do you memorize the whole script and then just present it in this way where we feel we know exactly what you’re about to say and what you’re talking about. It’s absolutely brilliant!
Keep in this up please! I need more of you and your videos to keep me company while animating through the endless nights.
Satoshi Kon is literally one of my favorite directors of all time (animation or live-action). All of his movies are masterpieces imo. Peak animation right there. He will be missed.

When I was growing up and learning to become an artist, I put myself through the same exhaustive routine as Kon, which is why his dreamy work instantly appealed to me. It came from the place of inspirational exhaustion. I loved it, because it reflected the world, as it appeared to me at the time. To me he's like a Japanese version of David Lynch. Someone who understands the authentic nature of dreams. One who can replicate visually, things that most can't put into words.
I think Murayama was right on not finishing someone's work as a tribute, considering the reception A.I. had. I know that that film was supposedly Kubrick's vision, but who knows how that film would've turned out if Kubrick could actually finish it.
The amount of effort that has went into this video essay is quite unimaginable for me. Great job dude

i've adored kon's work since i was a kid. my parents used to let me watch paranoia agent and paprika with them when i was little lol. seeing you talk about details of his life and his career that i didn't know makes me so happy. keep making content dude, i'll definitely be watching it.
Satoshi Kon and Ito Junji are my all time favorites. Its amazing that people can live in a different culture than me but really make me feel connected and empathetic to their characters and stories. I guess there really are things that are just human and always translate.

I really wish he can animated oyasumi punpun. I know it better not to be animated but i have hope this guy can animated it because he has a unique visual of life.
Of all the people that went prematurely his departure hurts the most, leaving a gaping hole in the void that is Japanese animation.

I'm just struck by how Japanese him saying "its so disrespectful to die before one's parents." Its so grim but it made me laugh out loud. The darkness really is the key to comedy.
This retrospective is really good and well written, but I think it would have been nice if you'd made it more clear when you're using your own words and when you're citing Satoshi Kon. You go from talking about the movie yourself to speaking from the perspective of Kon almost seamlessly, which makes it confusing and jumbled up at times. That being said, I really enjoyed this video.
Generally i tried to segment them , but i didnt want to overuse the quote format. Check the subtitles, It is all telegraphed on them

Kon's letter at the end of his life is so haunting... the amount of injustified shame he felt on his last days of life just break my heart. I'll always hold dear his movies close to my heart.
