Well this was a very hard video to make for this reason it's such an sum of it parts experience movie it's hard to say stuff about it, like just look at it you can just get the gist that it's an epic from that
Metropolis is one of the first Japanese animation film I was introduced to and it has been with me ever since, in my art and reference especially. It's beautiful. Again, great work on the video :)
I can't help but say this this film is a Visual masterpiece. Rintaro and Otomo took Tezuka's story and themes and brought them to life effectively. I really enjoyed Madhouse Month, it was quite a ride.
Ah yes, my all times favorite movie ever. You really do know your stuff. I fucking love this movie so much. Detective Shunsaku is my favorite because of how he hasn't let Metropolis change him for better or for worse. He felt like the control character. This movie is very hard to enjoy for the first time but it really does hold incredible concepts that feel impossible to make sense of when you watch it for the first time
@@Stevem Yes, I watched a lot of Tezuka's with him in it. He's a great character that gives a japanese aspect to the stories because I believe he's always japanese in every work. Also I like how simplistic but unique his design is.
I recently had the pleasure of watching this on the big screen at the Tiff Lightbox in Toronto. I'd seen it before but just on a computer screen, seeing in a theatre was absolutely mindboggling, the animation, the artistry that went into this movie are at the pinnacle of the medium. I came out with a new appreciation of the movie and the work that went into it. This really is one of those movies that has to be seen on a big screen to get the full impact of, maybe not necessarily a theatre or home theatre setup, but even just a projector would do it alot more justice than just a laptop.
Is there a reason why Tima is the only character drawn in modern anime design. Looking incredibly cute and pretty? With round face, big eyes and slender body. I wonder if this was a certain nod to rise of moe\kawaii culture. How Otaku view kawaii characters like this. To present her look like nymph or goddess more beautiful than human. Especially that Chobits was released during that time.
Stellar review. I decided to watch this movie off of randomly Googling anime movies to see, off of seeing a short brand new anime movie released on Netflix. I was surprised at how beautiful its animation looked. As of now I can't recall the name of the movie, but I'd be happy to go and search for it if any reply asking. Anywhom, this movie was many to pop up in relation to anime movies through a quick Google search, and I seemed was honestly eager to view it due to its cool-looking movie poster. New Year's of this year, I decided to stay up late at night and watch it in my room with headphones to "set the mood". I seen about 30 minutes of it, then fell asleep. I soon woke up at around the 55 minute mark of the movie and watched till the end. I teared up at the end. A few days ago, I decided to rewatch the movie and I don't regret it one bit. It's not as great as Akira, but still beautiful and emotional on as how they draw Tima and Kenichi together. I'll never forgive this stellar movie for pulling on my heart's strings.
I thought some people were letting the visuals trump story telling, but when you put it like that, it does make me seriously consider watching the movie again. It seems like its one of those stories whose symbolism is more the focus then the actual story telling beats(Or at least, where said symbolism leads).
I was a kid when i watched this movie for the first time. At first sight, the art told me it was the kind of animation i was always watching in CN (kid's stuf), but then, the shit started and bullets where banging all around, and people was being hurt and the robots where treated as second class fuckers. After the end credits of the movie, i felt that i was older, i felt i had learned some things that i wasn't even supposed to look for at that time of my life.
I own this on VHS, the quality of the tape is pretty old, yet seeing this movie for the first time, it changed my perception on what animation could be
I've been absolutely obsessed with your videos as of late, and I'm currently going through withdraws. I've noticed that you've been spending so much time fighting youtube's broken copyright claims on your videos and it's criminal. It's criminal that so many other anime review channels make pointless video after pointless video uploading the same content over and over again while you upload a masterpiece every so often that you have to relentlessly fight over to say that it's your own original work.As soon as I'm able to earn a living I'm punching your patreon subscription but so take your time and upload as slowly as you want. We'll be waiting!
I appreciate the support I've actually had the same company fight me on 2 videos for ages and they came back with a vengeance after I sneaked a couple through and it's a real pain, new video out soon by the wayyy
Osamu Tezuka was a man ahead of his time. But some stuff of his older work was not made to be animated. Not saying all of his work should not be animated or should get an anime of his old work. (His manga Dorororo got an anime reboot of sorts and it was loved by many new fans not because Dororo is a popular girl from that show) I know some of his manga can work for new anime films or series depending if they give it new life. But one I wish had finished before he died was phoenix. He was planning to finish that until 2001 where the manga timeline for both the past and president should finally come together for I guess a huge battle or like both timelines to finally heal itself. But when he died. He probably never wrote down the ending so some never touched the manga until some years after his death and even in 2020. Some anime studios still make films based on some of his works from Phoenix. (Just slowly as some don't wanna rush it and try to plan how to make a film of some of those stories.) If we ever try to context his ghost in the afterlife? I would love to ask him how Phoenix was supposed to end. But yeah.
i saw this movie when i was 8 or 9,i didnt remember the hame of the movie but when i knew it and watch it,i love it so much but i didint understand so well the movie and the ending but thanks to this video,i understand everything Thank you!

Tezuka characters are more like actors-- Thery're cast in various works like stars in a movie, type. cast even. Red, Lamplight, Hamegg, Atlas, even Shinsaku Ban and Kenichi-- You will see them in many others works as well. Rock is usually always the asshole.

Osamu Tezuka has always been an inspirational mangaka for me. I found that apparently, in Hayao Miyazaki's book "Starting Point " (Shupatsuten), he burned his early drawings because they looked too similar to Tezuka's. Hayao also mildly criticized Osamu's simplistic style of writing , but I believe Miyazaki neglected Tezuka's later works (Metropolis, Black Jack, Ode to Kirihito, Midnight), which were much more philosophical and touched on many poor aspects of Japanese culture.
There's two stories to the one in starting point, Miyazaki is a spurned fan basically. Tezuka came in made a film at toei bare in mind this is before Miyazaki's time at toei and in Tezuka's version of the story he wants a character to die because he thinks it will be emotional poignant, he's told no by toei and you can't do that. SO what does he do he goes about Toei and grabs a bunch of animators and decides to make his own production house why can't he do things his way. Miyazakis version of events is that Tezuka wanted to kill this character and made her sick to save on frames so they wouldn't have to animate her at the end. Which is obviously the complete different philosophy miyazaki goes into animation with, Miyazaki thinks tezuka is this business man first. Both stories probs have some truth to it. But yess tezukas later work is really great stuff and his work has always been absolutely insane fast moving spectacles. Phoenix should be on that list and metropolis was one of his earlier works , this film version adds a lot more to it than the OG version, which while does go into post war cold war fear its mainly a fear of technology story
@@Stevem Thank you so much, Stevem. It's great that you highlighted some misconceptions I had about Miyazaki's constrained relationship with Tezuka Osamu, and I absolutely agree with you that Phoenix should've been added to my list of Osamu's philosophical manga. Tezuka Osamu has just always been an inspirational figure for me , and literally inspired me to become a mangaka, so when Miyazaki wrote in an newspaper article his later distaste for Tezuka's work, I was of course deeply saddened by this, so I further studied the article, which is how I conceived my very off conclusion. Nevertheless, I extraordinarily love both contemporaries and their animated masterpieces(I still haven't got an Astro Boy comic!), no matter if one guy disliked the other or vice versa. (Also thanks for explaining that Metropolis was one of Tezuka's early and not later works, I truly appreciate it. )
Love the imagery of the movie, the story is far from great, but I like. Hate Rock with all my heart, and the ending is just heartbreaking! Great movie, never see the original german one, but I remember to hear that Tezuka never see it too, and he create all this stuff based on the cover of said movie. Metropolis from Osamu Tezuka, definitly is a recommendation to all fans of animated movies in general!
If you read the manga, it's become obvious that this movie follows more the Fritz Lang movie, than the manga (saw no giant mice here. Yeah, the manga is way more weird).
It definitely looks intriguing, even with the criticisms I’ve heard about it, regarding its narrative, characters, and how messy it is, I do plan to give this film a look due to not just the visual appeal (I mean Look at those colors man), but also its story seems fascinating enough for me to see what the fuss is about!
I remember having the VHS to this film awhile back, saw it once and never again. The thing is, I was around 13 years old at the time, so I am fairly certain that I didn't truly understand what it is the film was trying to do, for me it was just this weird flick. Watching this video makes me want to return to it and see how I would feel about it now, I get the feeling that I just might appreciate what it was trying to say a lot more.
generally i think you would, i watched it when i was younger and generally just remember the experience being wonderful and it was beautiful and i loved watching rock be a dick but i didnt remember anything deeper and now 10 years later we are here
Im curious if you are gonna tackle Texhnolyze? Its one of my personal favorites, its such a unique series that just really loves to tests its audience on how much they can handle what they are given especially the very first episode. while the pacing can be extreamly slow it does a fantastic job capturing the world that is slowly and dreadfully meeting its doom, it has a really fantastic atmosphere that at times can be very unnerving in a very minimal ways.
@@Stevem I recommend it but at the same time i kinda dont because, it really is an anime that is not for everyone, not only is it really slow but it ends on very hard hitting note. personally i love anime that is overly depressing and has heavy themes, but this series is on another level. so if you are into that, welcome to the party. oh and it also has excellent english dub
@@Stevem it definitely is lol. I mean it's from the same writer who did serial experiments lain after all the only difference is that Lain is rewatchable and not only for the sake of understanding the plot. Texhnolyze however well can't be considered rewatchable unless you have been too optimistic for past months. Despite me scaring you off it isn't ment to say you can't enjoy it at all there are many fantastic moments that are done masterfully , and of course it's stunning art direction, as expected when you have yoshitoshi Abe working on it (although he wasn't too invovled with the writing) it's that type of anime that doesn't seek to entertain and but to be as raw as possible
@@casper3105 I've seen some raw shit outside of animation so i'm not really phased by the nihilism angle, but i generally don't make videos on shows most of time, because it's a hell of a lot more prep editing and combing through especially if you have watch it twice to get everything down
Wow what a topic to start the new decade on, and end Madhouse month with. Thank you. I personally have hard time justifying my opinions on the film, because whilst is interesting with its storytelling, visual flair, and symbolism. It's slow and contemplative and runs the risk of being boring. Even though I just said all that, it's still a great film, and a great one to end a career on. Rintaro will remain as one of the greats. Stevem I wish you great strides in 2020 and beyond. Same to everyone else who reads this. Cheers!
I've seen much slower from Madhouse, Metropolis is 113 mins which makes is longer than a lot of anime movie but still pretty short. It is a much faster film than Metropolis 1927 for sure
@@mak_707 I think considering the building is named after her and him she's implied to be alive again but it's ambiguous enough it could be read either way
I live in Japan. I recently rewatched the film. Unfortunately, the only places I could find it were on UA-cam and Amazon Prime Japan. You’d think Amazon Prime would have it in HD, but no. The quality was as shitty as it was on UA-cam. This movie needs more love
One of my favourite things about Osama Tezuka's works is how dark and depressing they can be, yet they are never without hope. His works emphasize the idea that the greatest failures emphasize the greatest successes
Metropolis is my number 1 favorite anime. It's just something about it that makes me motivated and inspired. Also holmes is my first favorite antagonist. I never liked antagonists in anime. They're like a meh to me. but him. there's something about him that makes me like him.

Probably one of my favorite animated movies, surpassing several of the ghibli films in my mind. It was always so strangely underated. Almost no merchandise, when I first saw it there were legitimate animation cells from the movie selling for as little as $25 on eBay. Visually it's simply iconic, many of the character designs and backgrounds stick with you. The aesthetic and soundtrack alone capture the mind and hold it.
Rintaro's adaptation of the grand, highly technological Metropolis (the one adapted by Osamu Tezuka, of course) has to be one of the most beautiful Japanese anime films ever made. Every frame could literally serve well as a painting in the form of a portrait.
@@Stevem Kokoro is the technology that gives astroboy his emotions and will to think for himself lol Which is what the girl in the thumbnail "probably" has built in too :)
Im pretty sure that only casual watchers don't get this film.. GITS: Innocence, now that is an interesting film that needs rewatching and rewatching n rewatching.
I would love to talk about GITS: Innocence since I think it's so alluring in a way the first film isn't, it really expects you to work in the same way an Angels egg does
@@Stevem Yes, true. He meant more how the scenes don't have enough breathing room. Either over-animated(incredibly visual) or too much dialogue to easily follow everything.
In trumps america this film really has a new telling. about kenichi- the name itself being japanese for "first" - i always thought it was subtly hinted at that he is actually a robot- the prototype for tima- hence why he stays behind with the robots- and why his uncle allows him- plus the way the robots treat him
why the cenorsd for the word four? Would youtube find it in a sexually context as in four-some cuz it still seems strange cuz thats seems like the only reason. Also meant to see this movie thank u for all these recommendations! I really dont get how u got so many done for dec u really work hard hope u take a good break.
I love this movie but I guess I do kinda agree with some reviewers about how there isn't a great plot.. everytime I've watched this movie I've loved it but when I think about it its really mainly because of the visuals I mean I haven't seen this movie in probably atleast a few years and I can't even exactly remember the plot but there is certain scenes that I still see clearly in my head because they looked so cool.
well the plot is about the Japanese experience which is lost on alot of reviewers who can't see the forest for the trees there's a lot there you just have to dig in, even now on a solely visual story it does fine
I didn't know Otomo had a part in this anime. I watched it again for the first time in a few years and it reminded me of Akira, especially the character at the diner with the round sunglasses. It's a good anime, so much potential, but falls short. It's a shame.
well not my argument, Birds point is that the rebels don't want communism they want a return to center by removing robots they start that revolution not by fighting the rich, but robots the lowest in the structure. The robots actually destroy the systemic later so you could argue they are the ones who have the actual communist revolution
this was such a weird movie, but damn fine one to watch as a kid, the feelings of boredom and excitement seemed to be mixed together while i was watching and rewatching it. now i have weird nostalgic feelings for this movie, i still don't like the art style, character design and aesthetics, but as a movie it's so damn well animated and well executed film with interesting story.
I'm mixed with this movie. It looks amazing but the story jumped from entertaining to boring. Maybe I saw it differently the first time since I saw it in middle school but watching again might help

Metropolis is one of the first Japanese animation film I was introduced to and it has been with me ever since, in my art and reference especially. It's beautiful. Again, great work on the video :)
Thank you :)
I love love love love the last scene song and of course the credits song. I still have it on my phone ♥
I watched this when I was a child and wow it's incredible. I can't express how much it's affected me and my growth as a person.
I can't help but say this this film is a Visual masterpiece. Rintaro and Otomo took Tezuka's story and themes and brought them to life effectively. I really enjoyed Madhouse Month, it was quite a ride.
glad you had joined me on the ride it was an experience
Ah yes, my all times favorite movie ever. You really do know your stuff. I fucking love this movie so much. Detective Shunsaku is my favorite because of how he hasn't let Metropolis change him for better or for worse. He felt like the control character. This movie is very hard to enjoy for the first time but it really does hold incredible concepts that feel impossible to make sense of when you watch it for the first time
He's in other Tezuka mangas too he is the a sturdy character
@@Stevem Yes, I watched a lot of Tezuka's with him in it. He's a great character that gives a japanese aspect to the stories because I believe he's always japanese in every work. Also I like how simplistic but unique his design is.

19 years after this fil was released you make this video and it has blessed my feed. Thank you for talking about this masterpiece of a film.
no worries
I recently had the pleasure of watching this on the big screen at the Tiff Lightbox in Toronto. I'd seen it before but just on a computer screen, seeing in a theatre was absolutely mindboggling, the animation, the artistry that went into this movie are at the pinnacle of the medium. I came out with a new appreciation of the movie and the work that went into it. This really is one of those movies that has to be seen on a big screen to get the full impact of, maybe not necessarily a theatre or home theatre setup, but even just a projector would do it alot more justice than just a laptop.
Thank you for making this video, and for the trip down memory lane!
no worries
Is there a reason why Tima is the only character drawn in modern anime design. Looking incredibly cute and pretty? With round face, big eyes and slender body. I wonder if this was a certain nod to rise of moe\kawaii culture. How Otaku view kawaii characters like this. To present her look like nymph or goddess more beautiful than human. Especially that Chobits was released during that time.
apparently the character tima was based on, Michi, was made to look more beautiful and standout then the other characters, like an angel
FUCKING YES FINALLY A RELATIVELY LARGE UA-camR TALKING ABOUT THIS MASTERPIECE!
The fluid dance of the, especially the fire fighting robots really captivated me
I want to watch it again
Yeah, i need to see this badly, the animation looks so good.
This channel is severely underrated. Subbed
Watched this twice. It's just beautiful. The art, the music, the plot, the characters,... just right for me :)
Yes son! Loving this madhouse marathon.

One of my favorites. I thoroughly enjoyed Madhouse Month.
im glad
I thought some people were letting the visuals trump story telling, but when you put it like that, it does make me seriously consider watching the movie again. It seems like its one of those stories whose symbolism is more the focus then the actual story telling beats(Or at least, where said symbolism leads).
love metropolis so much
Undoubtedly an underrated visually and story whise masterpiece.
Wonder if ‘Rock’ is a subtle reference to the Rockefellers
I was a kid when i watched this movie for the first time. At first sight, the art told me it was the kind of animation i was always watching in CN (kid's stuf), but then, the shit started and bullets where banging all around, and people was being hurt and the robots where treated as second class fuckers. After the end credits of the movie, i felt that i was older, i felt i had learned some things that i wasn't even supposed to look for at that time of my life.
That why I always loved studio ghibli films. It felt different.
I own this on VHS, the quality of the tape is pretty old, yet seeing this movie for the first time,
it changed my perception on what animation could be
Going to watch it again :)
i remember watching this as a kid i never really understood it. Thanks for this.
I appreciate the support I've actually had the same company fight me on 2 videos for ages and they came back with a vengeance after I sneaked a couple through and it's a real pain, new video out soon by the wayyy
just bought this on blu ray cant wait to see it
A pretty sad film, yet it never feels nihilistic and the animation is pure joy to watch (aside from just a couple awkward CGI moments).
yeah though the ending has a silver lining in a way
I saw this movie just last night
But yeah.
Ive made a video about phoenix

Yeah i show a picture later on in the video of Rock in Tezuka's manga
He appeared in the Phoenix manga too. Dude is a savage.

Tezuka characters are more like actors-- Thery're cast in various works like stars in a movie, type. cast even. Red, Lamplight, Hamegg, Atlas, even Shinsaku Ban and Kenichi-- You will see them in many others works as well.
Rock is usually always the asshole.

I love this Metropolis anime, for me a masterpiece
You are like the Kenny Lauderdale of Video Essays

love this anime so much it is brilliant
(Also thanks for explaining that Metropolis was one of Tezuka's early and not later works, I truly appreciate it. )
A haunting film.
Re-release coming real soon in the USA
Love the imagery of the movie, the story is far from great, but I like. Hate Rock with all my heart, and the ending is just heartbreaking! Great movie, never see the original german one, but I remember to hear that Tezuka never see it too, and he create all this stuff based on the cover of said movie.
Metropolis from Osamu Tezuka, definitly is a recommendation to all fans of animated movies in general!
Tezuka hasn't seen it but rintaro certainly has
If you read the manga, it's become obvious that this movie follows more the Fritz Lang movie, than the manga (saw no giant mice here. Yeah, the manga is way more weird).

It definitely looks intriguing, even with the criticisms I’ve heard about it, regarding its narrative, characters, and how messy it is, I do plan to give this film a look due to not just the visual appeal (I mean Look at those colors man), but also its story seems fascinating enough for me to see what the fuss is about!
must of that is completely overstated anyway , it's a total classic
I remember having the VHS to this film awhile back, saw it once and never again. The thing is, I was around 13 years old at the time, so I am fairly certain that I didn't truly understand what it is the film was trying to do, for me it was just this weird flick. Watching this video makes me want to return to it and see how I would feel about it now, I get the feeling that I just might appreciate what it was trying to say a lot more.

Im curious if you are gonna tackle Texhnolyze?
Its one of my personal favorites, its such a unique series that just really loves to tests its audience on how much they can handle what they are given especially the very first episode. while the pacing can be extreamly slow it does a fantastic job capturing the world that is slowly and dreadfully meeting its doom, it has a really fantastic atmosphere that at times can be very unnerving in a very minimal ways.
i know of it but I haven't seen it
@@Stevem I recommend it but at the same time i kinda dont because, it really is an anime that is not for everyone, not only is it really slow but it ends on very hard hitting note. personally i love anime that is overly depressing and has heavy themes, but this series is on another level. so if you are into that, welcome to the party. oh and it also has excellent english dub
@@casper3105 i might watch it sometime but sounds a bit taxing to make a video on
@@Stevem it definitely is lol.

Every frame could literally serve well as a painting in the form of a portrait.

well not my argument, Birds point is that the rebels don't want communism they want a return to center by removing robots they start that revolution not by fighting the rich, but robots the lowest in the structure. The robots actually destroy the systemic later so you could argue they are the ones who have the actual communist revolution
