I've had a 2022 Pro S for about 3 weeks and am loving it so far. It came loaded with the software update and I can confirm that most of the issues you and others have been annoyed by are resolved with the update.
I felt like a ventriloquist listening to you. I have 23000km on my Id.4, I paid 28 Canadian dollars on maintenance. As for the infotainment mine is working fine. Canadian models come with heating pomp’s which is perfect for Montreal s weather. I would definitely recommend this car! Great video by the way !
This is a very good review of the VW 1.4 and one that I believe would help potential buyers. Your review was well organized, at the right level of detail, covered all the essentials, and was easy to understand. I purchased my ID.4 in Aug 2021 and have 10k miles, about half as much as you. I found myself agreeing with pretty much everything you stated in your review. The only area where my experience greatly differs from yours is with the travel assist. The car does not slow down when I am fast approaching a car in my lane that is moving very slowly or that has stopped. This happens on both highways and city streets. I can see that the my car does not always recognize the car in my lane because the car icon does not appear on my screen. I also noticed that the travel assist behaves poorly when I am driving on curvy roads because the car does not see the car around the corner and does not slow down fast enough. It also sometimes accelerates on curves, trying to reach the target speed limit that I set, because the car thinks the lane is straight.
Thank you so much for the kind words, Eric! I am split on the travel assist myself. To VW's credit, I've never had a phantom braking or false warning issue like I've had in several Teslas, which gives me confidence in the system. On the other hand, it doesn't handle ambiguity or curves anywhere near as well as the latest Autopilot software. Just one comparison point. I'd say overall I am fine with it and use it sparingly but don't trust it a ton. Thank you for your feedback on it as well!
We’ve had our ID4 Pro 77kW since mid- December 2021. We’ve done 21.000 miles since then. (Germany and Europe). We have the 3.0 OTA update. It is a fantastic car to own and drive.
Thank you!! I'm plant engineer in Zwickau for VW, it is just out beggining we are trying our best. The software was really our one and only weak point, we are 100% focused on it. And believe me our next family ev s will even much better than this.
Was glaubst warum?
Hi, what can you tell VW ID4 which is build in china plants is there are some quality differences? Is it good or is it bad compared to EU or American Versions?
@@GioKht from the chinese factory, the id4-s will be only on sale in china. The id4 is produced overall in the world by the same quality standards. For each big markets (china, us, europe) the difference is mostly the equipment and packages. But in build quality, and powertrain each markets get the same package.
to tell you how much space these cars truly have, I just test drove one and im 6'6" 500lbs, and i fit in there with a lot of room to spare, in both passenger and driver seat. With room enough for an average sized person to still fit behind me
Have had ours for a year. An absolute joy to use. I've come to appreciate the haptic buttons on the steering wheel. Their main advantage is swiping. You don’t need to look down or fidget when you swipe. Simplicity. It took me by surprise when I realized how swiping adjusts ACC cruising speed or sound volume or skips songs. You just swipe your thumbs across the middle of those panels , effortless - no need to look down or find the right buttons. It’s a pity those buttons are misunderstood. Coupled with AR-HUD, I never need to take my eyes off the road.
A post today (6-25-22) from someone who just picked up his 2022 addresses the software issue, "Put 45 miles on my 2022 ID.4 today and compared to my 2021 I'm digging the improvements! It also has the 3.1 software! They instrument cluster has more information and the radio has been redone for better functionality. Travel assist has also been updated so you can simply have it on with the cruise control instead of turning it on separately."
I just put an order in for an ID.4 Pro S. I’m looking at a 4 to 6 month delivery time. Frankly, you shoes were the things that I have the most concerned about. So hopefully the updates that will come with my car I have sold many of the complaints that owners have mentioned. Also, initially I ordered the RW drive but changed to AWD after talking with an owner who recently traded in his 2021 or a 2022 model. He told me that the handling of the AWD was more sure footed at high speeds and emergency maneuvers. He also said his actual AWD mileage penalty was quite small compared to his previous RW model. I’m wondering if anyone else has had real world experience with comparing AWD to RW.
Good review. I've had my 2023 RWD ID4 for about a month. It comes with newer software, and I've experienced no problem with infotainment system lagginess at all. However, I use Android Auto almost all of the time, and rarely interact with the ID4 UI. The Android Auto has been rock solid (which wasn't the case with my last car). I have the climate control and seat heaters set to auto, so have little reason to ever touch the climate controls. However, a couple times it has forgotten my auto climate and seat heater settings, so I had to go back in and fix it, which is annoying. The phone app is VERY bare bones. But, the only thing I really use it for is checking charging status, and it has worked reliably for that. So, while the software definitely isn't the greatest, it's good in the areas I care most about. Adaptive cruise control works well, which is important to me, since I use it almost all the time. I don't yet have a lot of experience with the lane centering feature, so can't comment. The ride is very comfortable and quiet, which makes it such a pleasure to drive. I thought the slower 0 to 60 time compared to other EVs might be a problem. It hasn't been a problem AT ALL. It's plenty quick enough for me. It's quite roomy inside for a relatively small vehicle. Things I DON'T like: It doesn't have auto door locks for when you leave the vehicle. So, I have to manually lock on the door handle. After six years of getting used to it on my old car (a very basic car), it's taking a lot of relearning. I still can't believe a car with all this tech doesn't have such a basic feature. The sound system is pretty mediocre. If you boost the bass and treble in the three band equalizer, you can get it to sound slightly better, but it's still nothing to write home about. Even inside the cabin, the pedestrian noisemaker is too loud, especially just below 20 MPH. It's way louder than a typical ICE vehicle, which doesn't make any sense. I'm thinking about putting some tape over the speaker to muffle the sound a bit. The haptic capacitive buttons on the steering wheel are a little less user friendly than traditional mechanical buttons, but I'm getting used to them. Overall, I really like the ID4. It has met or exceeded almost all my expectations (lack of auto door locks was really the only negative surprise). It stands out as an excellent value, which is the main reason I got it.
I'd agree with these pros/cons (I have a 23' AWD Pro S). The lack of a walkaway auto lock is surprising, particularly when coupled with the fact that you can't set the vehicle to do a confirming "chirp" with manual locking. Only the lights flash, and depending on the light, it's hard to see/know whether you've locked the car since the locks are so quiet. But on balance a wonderful vehicle so far.
Great review, I can relate to almost everything having driven my ID.4 for 10.000 miles (in the Netherlands). My infotainment is not so buggy, luckily (2.3). But the (lack of) software updates in the car and the app has me concerned, as most of the current features in the app have been present from the launch without major new functions. I would not buy VW again because of this and would like to warn anybody buying a car nowadays to pay more attention to the software and app that comes with a car.
Thank you for watching! Is the infotainment screen still pretty bad at 2.3? Are you able to lock and unlock your ID4 with the mobile app? I completely agree - automakers are going to be judged on software moving forward and it is important they invest as quickly as possible.
It is electric car so software is absolute deal breaker for me. So I’ve locked in Berlin made Model Y. Saw few reviews and looks like German Tesla build and ride quality is on whole new level compared to USA made
I have a 2023 ID 4 and looks like most of the software bugs have been resolved already. The system is stable and the controls are much more responsive.
Yeah the sound is totally subjective. I'm a sound-sensitive person, and the vehicle overall is very quiet. I really like the particular sound of this EV. But I will say that how it sounds in this video is far more loud/harsh than I'm hearing it as a driver--even with the window open. And of course considerably better than ICE engine noise. But eye/ear of the beholder on this aspect :)
Haha! Yeah... I am not a fan. I prefer Tesla's whooshing wind sound instead. It's just the constant high pitched noise you hear when sitting at a stop and the fact that you can hear it so far away. Luckily for us the solution was to unplug the front speaker. Sound is still generated from the rear and it's still quite loud but it helped take the edge off. Just not my jam. :)
Awesome review! I am looking at the exact model you have currently. Plan to set up a test drive this weekend. Your notes helped me soo much. It was the gas vs monthly payment comparison that made me want to switch to EV. I spend $500+ a month on gas and that is basically what my payment will be.. Seems to be a no brainer. Hope to join the ID4 club soon. Good day!
ID.4 Pro S owner here since Sep 21 I have no complaints about this car. Love it specially for road trips and those massage seats is a plus. Almost 10k miles on mine and 3 road tips already from South Florida to Charlotte. Florida is perfect for EV I’m getting more miles than advertise specially city drive. Great video
Great to hear it, Pedro! I'm glad you are enjoying the ID4 as well. Only hope is that we get a software update that corrects some of the items mentioned and it'll be even better. Thank you for watching!
This was very helpful, thanks for doing this. The comments on the range needing about 30 more are great. Its amazing how bad VW is trying to be at the whole software thing. I'd heard they promised regular software updates.
With gas at 5 dollars a gallon I now spend more on gas for my Raptor monthly then the payment on an ID4, and VW will give me free charging for 3 years. Plus there is an EA charge station at my local Walmart that I visit weekly anyway, what was once unthinkable now has serious consideration.
Absolutely. We drive so much more to places we want to go during the summer because our electricity at home is so cheap and free on the road. It's such a great deal!
I have the same color! i just brought home my 2023 ID.4 pro RWD yesterday. Traded my Nissan Frontier 2022 SV 4x4. I do really love this car. I haven't been this excited getting a new car (from my experience with 2015 Tucson turbo, Lexus NX300 FS, and my truck. Still learning all the features/Functionality. It doesn't come with a mobile charger and the VW is more expensive than tesla's ($350 vs $230). Good thing Amazon has a lot of stuff (got the BougeRV level 2 EV 16A that comes with NEMA 5-15 adapter for regular 110V outlet with 20A fuse). Also, I AM LOVING THE SPEAKER SYSTEM!!! My "I wish" thoughts so far: - I wish powerlift tailgate is standard across the trims. - The buttons for volume and climate should've been backlit. Although pressing the climate control will give you full functionality adjustments on screen. - i wish i have the 12V port near the dashboard so i can run my dashcam without hardwire or taking a long trip to the back. Or at least a USB port behind the rearview mirror on my trim.
Thanks so much for this review. I have been coveting the ID4 for a long time. I have a 2021 Hyundai Kona EV which I actually love but I need something bigger and with AWD (not available in the Kona). My car is supposed to arrive in about 10 days. Glad to hear about the software update! It takes me forever to figure all of that stuff out anyway; in the end, as long as the radio works and I can stream music through my phone, I'm good. Can't wait to receive my ID4 Pro. Great video!
Thank you so much, Diane! The new software should work just fine for your needs. Congratulations on the new car! Be sure to come back and let me know how you like it. - Wes
Hi Diane, you should have your ID4 by now. I hope you’re really enjoying it. What color is yours? I think it’d be nice of owners to mention what color they opted for their ID4s. VW picked very nice colors for them & not so easy to pick one over others. Enjoy your ID4s, you all. By the way I’m still shopping.
@@jayt1402 Well, to be honest, I really wanted white. But in the Pro (not the Pro S), the only colors they had were gray and tourmaline blue. I got the blue and it's very nice. It just shows the dirt so much more than white does. I'm having a problem with the sensor in the driver's door handle. It Doesn't lock when I press it. I Took it into the dealer and they said there's nothing wrong with it.But it's still doing the same thing. Very frustrating. Other than that I love it. It's So roomy inside, big enough for my big dog and my tall husband.
This is the one I believe we will be buying after much reading. It does get really nice comments and reviews. It's always seems to be on lists of ev's that are recommended. Wonderful video . . Thank you was a big help!
I like my car and enjoyed your video as it covered a lot of my likes and concerns. I recently asked about the lack of updates and the uselessness of the VW app at VW customer service online. My problem has been charging the vehicle from home on a first or second level charger. On the VW ID-4 owner site this seems to be a frequent problem with it dropping off after 20-30 minutes and was supposed to be part of the 2022 update which has not occurred. VW gave me a link to enter my VIN to check for updates and so far none.
OMG at 6:35 when I heard that noise again it gave me PTSD to having owned that awful vehicle. I'm really glad your's has been reliable, I was on a first name basis with my service tech. Got a call 4 months after selling it that they had finally received the part to fix my car. Also the infotainment is completely unacceptable, it's frankly dangerous is you ask me. Everything is hard to use and takes the drivers attention away from driving. Why are there two different climate control systems instead of just one the actually works? I wouldn't buy that car again and have told everyone I now to stay away from it. If they just put normal buttons to control things I would probably think it was a good car. Sadly, I feel like it's a car that no one cared about when it was made. If you're thinking of buying this, save yourself the headache and go buy an Ioniq5/Kia EV6. They're SO much better.
Hi Brad - sorry to hear about all of your troubles with the ID4. I agree with you that newer EV models have a lot to offer in comparison and if we had that kind of service trouble, we would have sold it as well. But it's been great outside of the terrible software. I genuinely laughed at your first line though. 🤣 Best wishes! - Wes
@@MrRadBee Hey! well some small issues like the windows going down instead of up (an update is suposed to come) some times it takes for ever to change profiles. I think these are my only cons and they will eventually be fixed. Besides that I'm CRAZY in love! best car ever so far and i know luxury, I've owned many high end volvos. Super confortable, crazy smooth, AWD on the snow is awesome, great acceleration considering the weight/power ratio, looks amazing! I'm always looking for a reason to go out for a ride and blast the music while having a back massage 🤣Cant wait for my 22inches to have this killer look!!! definitely recommend!
Small tip for your future videos - you are doing vehicle review but 50% of the video you are showing yourself.. Please, it would be way better to see just a car.. Otherwise - very good quality of your content!
I was curious about that... I currently have a 2015 Model S. Also an ID.4 AWD on order. I absolutely love everything about my model S, except for the horrible ride. Unfortunately there are no AWD versions of the ID.4 to test drive. Fingers crossed! 🤞
My name is Gil Wall KC is my daughter... I agree the software is basic at best. Verizon 4g? Germans are poor programmers? I am wandering if Software interfaces are not popular in Europe. I am visiting in France I have not noticed anyone use any cellphone app. I have noticed the car itself is programable. I.e. When to start charging, how long or between what hours, when to warm the cabin. These settings are important in Europe electricity usage is managed by the region. In a way, it’s the same in our electrical region managed by TEP in Tucson. Its best to charge your car at home after 7PM and before 6AM when the rates are reduced. Therefore, the car like we have VW ID.4 AWD PRO S is ready to go for work. This fits the climate of Europe that is a more of a constant that the variants of the United States.
Agree 100%, I have tested a iD3 and the major problem was the app and infotainment. Otherwise great. But still almost the price of a Tesla and compared Tesla wins by far. OTA updates and app , acceleration and one pedal driving things that I am not willing to be without. The Tesla AP is also in a different class.
Nice objective video. I like that you've emphasized using a Level 1 charger, which will be adequate for many people depending on their driving habits. I have a '23, which comes with no charging cable. I bought the VW-branded 2-way charger for around $350, and although described as a "travel charger" it's totally adequate for my needs considering my daily driving of around 35-40 miles. A basic 240v circuit in your garage will charge at level 2 speeds, between 17-21 miles/hour for me. But the 110v would be adequate most days/nights as well. Point is, start with an inexpensive charger before buying a fancy home charge system right away. If you need to upgrade to a more powerful/faster charger, fine, but you may not need it.
Thank you for watching, Colin! I agree with all points. I think many overthink level 1 charging as "too slow" but it's only because it takes a new way of thinking and looking at how much you really drive on a daily basis.
I’m debating an ID4, there are grocery stores in my area with free 6kw charging, I work from home so I could just work there for 2 hours when I need some juice too
Thanks for your perspective, I just reserved a 2023 ID.4 and am hoping more of the kinks have been worked out by then. I did notice in my test drive how inconvenient it was to deal with climate controls and how the controls for moving the side mirrors were confusing. I wish VW would hire more software engineers to work on the mobile app and the infotainment experience. I certainly would consider working there and improving it 🙃
Just got my 2023 id4 built in usa. SW3.1 works much better, good enough to be no major issue. I fast charged on EA 350kw from 9% to 80% in 31 minutes with a peak rate of 160kw. Not quite as fast as EV6,ionic5 but very acceptable. Car is great in every way except for lack of one pedal driving. Don't understand at all why VW didn't implement this
@@dathes I like the fact that the car does not come to a complete stop. This allows to be creep the car if letting off too soon. Otherwise you have to feather the accelerator pedal to close the gap.
We have had a VW in our garage since 2016 and I honestly say that the UI has been the weakest point in all three vehicles. It's not terrible, but tolerable. Nowadays I use Android Auto whenever possible and my wife use Apple Carplay which allows her to control the entertainment system in Korean which is a HUGE win in my book. I have driven the Model 3 and Model X and the Tesla UI is the best that I have come across, but I prefer the build quality and dealer network of VW to the simplicity of the Tesla.
As a fellow owner of a 2021 ID.4(Pro S) I agree that the biggest complaint is the software and infotainment interface. Also the continue lack of one pedal driving and a "AUTO HOLD" is disappointing for a $50k+ electric car. I do disagree on one thing though. If the Hyundai Ioniq 5 had been available at the time of our purchase I would have taken that car instead.
The auto hold mode should be coming in our software update soon. You should be receiving notification from VW to schedule service for the update. Hopefully that makes both of us happier! :)
Regarding Ford's performance on software updates. As an owner of two MMEs I have to give them a solid C-. The older of our 2 cars is still awaiting the update enabling the BlueCruise autonomous driving functionality after over a year of ownership, and is currently several point revisions behind the most recent shipped software version. The newer of our 2 cars was delivered with BlueCruise enabled and is on the current version or nearly so. So while Ford's ability to ship OTAs has been somewhat better than VW's they still have issues. I guess Tesla's proficiency in updating its cars fooled the legacy companies into thinking it's easy.
Thank you for this insight! I will still argue that any company that has shipped any software update OTA that has either added features or corrected bugs, is well beyond VW. We are almost at 18 months of ownership and have received zero updates. Not even minor bug fixes. :) I agree with you, I hope all of the legacy auto companies get it together!
Been waiting to get my ID 4 since October 2021, the dealership says it "should" arrive by November 2022. This review is in alignment with what I'm hearing across the board - it's a great car, but the software is mediocre. Hopefully the long overdue update will resolve this frustration many have been expressing.
I have heard good things about the latest software. Sadly, early owners aren't able to get it yet, not sure why. Fingers crossed your ID4 arrives soon!
Indeed, it is! I'm not confident they will be able to fix it on our models, but hopefully a minor refresh in 1-2 years will come with a stronger processor.
Bought my ID4 a month ago and sold it a month later. The ridiculous infotainment system and lack of support from VW was the main reason. Also there is no way to put the car in park and step out with the whole car shutting competing off!! Really VW. It was such a pain to just get going on trips using the useless VW navigation. I always used ABRP on trips. Sold it and bought the discounted Model Y LR. Not a Tesla fan boy at all. I work hard for my money and I expect the products I buy to work. VW has a excellent product. They need to hire brilliant IT engineers and make the app and infotainment system work.
I completely understand your frustrations. The software is so bad. The ID4 is far behind in that department. Congratulations on your model y! I hope you enjoy it. We have one on order as well.
Great video man! Helps me decided whether to buy an ID3 or ID4. I agree on the cons. The infotainment system for one and the controls for rear windows. What's up with that?
Thank you for the kind words and for watching! No clue what they were thinking on the window switches. Trying to be a little too cute with them, I guess. Very odd.
I don't know if I agree about the ID.4 having the most annoying reverse sound. Have you heard Kia/Hyundai products? They beep like a frigging freight truck. It was the one thing I really hated about 2022 Kia Niro EV (and my 2020 Kia Niro hybrid). Great review though, I wanted an ID.4 but none were readily availble so I ended up with the Niro EV instead.
Thanks, James! I hear what you are saying about those reverse beeps. A Prius has a similar sound as well and it is irritating. I think what bothers me the most about the sound is that it stays on whenever you are in drive, even if you aren't moving at all and it's a bit high pitched for my liking. I hope you are enjoying the Kia Niro EV otherwise! It's an underrated car, imo.
Haha, I've gotten that comment a few times now. I have some sensory things and this definitely triggers them. I prefer the Tesla/Rivian implementation that sounds like a whooshing sound, which you can't hear in the cabin with the windows up.
much better than a Tesla. I feel "unique" when I'm driving my id4. It has a luxurious feeling. However , my car is making a squeaky noise when I brake. Is it a normal thing? It's a 2022
Hi Tu! My brakes started squeaking around 20-25k miles in. We had the brake fluid flushed and the sound went away. Seems like the service was a bit premature (recommended at 3 years, we did it less than 2) but it was worth it.
I also don't get the fixation on 0-60 times. Who cares? I know people like to compare it to Tesla, but I thought the same thing in their specs - who cares. I would care more about total range of the tires that come with it than the speed to start.
🤣 Trust me, when you hear that high pitched whining nonstop below 20mph even while stopped (but in drive) it gets to ya! Our neighbors always used to stare as we drove through the neighborhood. Can hear it about 100 feet away. We were able to "tone it down" a bit and it's been much, much better.
The ID4 comes with two individually operated "noise makers", one in the front and one in the rear. The one in the front is easy to access under the hood about halfway down the vehicle there's a simple plug that operates it. There are posts/videos about disconnecting it, which is what we did (DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK! :D). Our ID4 still makes plenty of noise but it is so much smoother and more tolerable now. :)
I dumped my ID 4 after 8 mths for a Tesla model Y , Best decision ever, it was like a massive weight off my shoulders to get tesla, the two cars are just not on the same engineering spectrum on any feature, VW is generations behind tesla .
I got one 3 weeks ago all is well but really hate the way they’ve put the break paddle & accelerator you cannot slide your foot across as break paddle is 3-4 cm higher that accelerator, Really don’t like that in fact it’s pretty dangerous.
Great review. Thanks! Any thoughts on the rear wheel drive? We live in MA and travel to VT - a lot! There and to ME and NH …in the winter. My concern is that we have had front wheel drive cars since I sold my ‘69 VW Beetle. How does this car handle on snowy roads and on muddy roads? (Currently driving an Subaru Outback). Thank you for any replies on this point.
Thank you for watching, John! Since you live in an area where it does get very cold, snowy, and hilly, I'd recommend going with the AWD just to be safe. I do want to put out the most EVs have a battery pack that extends of the width of the car, so the center of gravity and weight is more evenly distributed, meaning that a RWD EV doesn't feel or handle like a RWD gas or diesel car. If you lived somewhere with shorter winters, I'd say RWD is perfectly fine.
Yeah, you should expect to lose about 5% of range. I recommend going with the smaller (standard) wheels as they are more efficient (to maintain as much range as possible), look very similar and are still attractive. Another way to look at it is: you'll spend 5 more minutes at the charger each time, likely a worthwhile tradeoff for safer driving in wintery conditions. Electrify America is about to open a charger in Burlington and already have one in the middle of New Hampshire (quite a few in MA), so you shouldn't have to really worry about range anxiety on those trips! Be sure to check out my winter highway range test video to see how the cold impacts how far you can drive! :)
Can you comment on the tires? Do you need to take it to dealer or any shop can replace the tires? Can u change just one tire that is damaged or do u need to replace all 4 together?
You should be able to have them replaced at any shop. The back two tires are different sizes than the front and you can replace the back two (or front two) without replacing all four (I asked VW yesterday). Since I have RWD, my back two tires are balder than the front and will need replaced likely in the next 10,000 miles or less so they do wear pretty fast.
Nice work. Still have it and recommend it to this day? Any improvement in the software (updates)? Any guess how long it takes wall time to charge 80% on home L1 120? We own a 15 eGolf and are looking to replace our CX5 Signature w a new 22 ID4.
Hi Chris - yes we still have it and it's still going strong. We finally got the software update which requires a dealer visit. It only took one day. The software is noticeably quicker and contains less bugs. It is still a bit behind the competition however. Other than that, hard to complain about a car with no mechanical or build quality issues. :) it's been holding up very well, 50,000 miles in. I'll be publishing my next update video within a month. Thanks for watching and good luck with the purchase!
Nice video, helpful! I'm considering this vehicle....my 08' jetta was smashed by a tree 2 days ago, had it since new 😢 Insurance totalled it, time for a new VW, no new jettas at our car dealership, so looking at the ID4 this weekend. Do you recommend the 22 or 23 model? They have both options.....
Thank you for watching, Jody! I'm so sorry to hear about your accident! How much is the price difference at that dealership? If significant, I'd just go with the 2022 model. If not, jump for the 2023 (which should be made in the USA), as they did do some minor changes to the center console and arm rests. I wouldn't spend thousands more for it, though. Hope that helps!
So to go from the east coast to the West Coast how many hours of charging time do you have compared to filling up with gas and leaving in 10 minutes doesn't sound like a good idea to me
@It's Electric - An EV Help Hub well, I think you will experience a huge difference. Tesla is the undisputed leader of EVs for a good reason. I could have bought the model Y but decided to go for the incredible ioniq 5
@@francisdebriey3609 Congrats on the new car! The Ioniq 5 is great - I have a review video coming out on that one in a few weeks. Glad to see so many new (great) EV options. Tesla Model 3 was my very first EV, so no stranger to what Tesla offers, you do play a bit of Russian Roulette with build quality, more so than other automakers. However, we drive too much and need the reliability of the SC network, so we are going to take our chances. :)
Thank you - great to see you in the comments again, by the way! :) The tires are still in "good" condition but are slightly more slippery than they used to be. I expect we will be changing them in early 2023 at around 30,000 - 35,000 miles or so.

Had my Pro S for almost one year and 25,000 miles. Have driven car from coast to coast in past year.
I've had a 2022 Pro S for about 3 weeks and am loving it so far. It came loaded with the software update and I can confirm that most of the issues you and others have been annoyed by are resolved with the update.
Congratulations on the new ID4! Thank you for letting us know. Can't wait for the update.
Does the 2022 and newer ID4 have a heat pump?
@@johntrussell7228 in europe the heat pump is an option you can choose.
Not in the United States, sadly.
@@evhelphub the guy that sold me the car said that the heat pump was not so popular. He didn't sell a lot of them in the past.
We’ve done 21.000 miles since then. (Germany and Europe).🤮
Thanks for posting this, Bill! Fingers crossed all ID4 owners get this soon.
Things I DON'T like:
It doesn't have auto door locks for when you leave the vehicle.
Thanks, Dan! I agree with everything you stated. I am hoping they can add the walkaway lock feature in a software update in the future.
Saw few reviews and looks like German Tesla build and ride quality is on whole new level compared to USA made
@@evhelphub In 2.3 (and 2.4 and 3.0) it's not possible to lock/unlock afaik. In 3.0 you will be able to see the status (locked/unlocked)
bmw has a very nice app
Let me know how you like it!
Still waiting for my 2022 ID.4. I placed my order in March of this year so hopefully we receive it soon. Nice review.
Thank you for watching! Fingers crossed that you get it soon. Could come from the new American plant if it is later in the year.
@@evhelphub Yes I heard the Chattanooga plant is supposed to start operation in August.
Placed my order in February of 2021. Just arrived in the US... (ID4 Pro AWD)
That's a wait. VW hasn't asked me for the rest of the deposit yet. How long did it take to pay the rest of the deposit?
I now get my ID3 after 13 months, that's a "normal" delivery time at VW
I have a 2023 ID 4 and looks like most of the software bugs have been resolved already. The system is stable and the controls are much more responsive.
Glad to hear it!
6:35 HOW CAN YOU FIND THAT SOUND ANNOYING?! It actually sounds futuristic to me. I love it!
Great review! Although it's so funny how people have different tastes. The sound that the ID.4 makes is one of my favorite things! haha
Thanks, Katie! Yeah, I've heard others say that before. 🤣
I love the required sound....
Same
Awesome review! Good day!
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words, Bentley! I think you'll love the ID4!
Honestly, I think it sounds really cool and futuristic.
This was very helpful, thanks for doing this. The comments on the range needing about 30 more are great. Its amazing how bad VW is trying to be at the whole software thing. I'd heard they promised regular software updates.
Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching, Steve!
Once i get back to texas im going to strongly start looking for an EV. Good review after 1 yr of ownership.
Thank you for watching, Brandon!
I was never a VW fan, but I must admit the ID4 looks great!
It's $8/gallon in Canada 🇨🇦
Good luck trying to unload that dinosaur truck.
Think yourself lucky currently in the uk converted back to Dollars we are paying over 10 dollars a gallon.
My "I wish" thoughts so far:
- I wish powerlift tailgate is standard across the trims.
Congratulations on the new car, Mark! I hope it is still treating you well.
I’m first to like and comment. Love this channel
And love the ID.4!
Thank you! It's a great EV! :)
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words! :) I hope you enjoy your ID4! Cute dog, by the way.
OMG! Your review is by far the best car review I’ve come cross all these years! Excellent work!
Great review but the most awesome part of the ID4 is the “ Spaceship” noice it makes in slow speeds and specially when going in reverse.
Thank you for watching, Adrian. I disagree! 🤣
that's the EU requirement to make the noise warning pedestrians

I like my car and enjoyed your video as it covered a lot of my likes and concerns. I recently asked about the lack of updates and the uselessness of the VW app at VW customer service online. My problem has been charging the vehicle from home on a first or second level charger. On the VW ID-4 owner site this seems to be a frequent problem with it dropping off after 20-30 minutes and was supposed to be part of the 2022 update which has not occurred. VW gave me a link to enter my VIN to check for updates and so far none.
Still looks great. Thanks for the boots on the ground level update. This was good info to know. Be well.
Thanks for watching!
We're about to jump into this adventure with a 2023 ID.4 Pro S AWD.
Awesome. I hope you enjoy!
- Wes
One year of ownership here, agree with your assessments! Still waiting for the software upgrade ;)
Thanks man!! I'm getting my 2023 awd pro s tomorrow!
Congratulations! I hope you enjoy!
And how’s it been ?
Electrify America is .48 cents per KHW my home charger is .17 cents per KWH. best to charge at home when you can.
Agreed!
Thanks for the review. Kinda on the middle of my list.
5:46 - Austin vicinity! I guessed right!
I disagree!!!! The Mach-E is the MOST ANNOYING sounding system!!!! I picked ID 4 over the Mach-E most due to the loud overwhelming noises.
Small tip for your future videos - you are doing vehicle review but 50% of the video you are showing yourself.. Please, it would be way better to see just a car.. Otherwise - very good quality of your content!
I have both an ID 4 long range and a Tesla Model 3 performance.
The ride quality and sound proof were supreme when I sat inside my lovely ID4.
Can you just drive it as " guest " without infotainment?
I certainly would consider working there and improving it 🙃
Thanks for watching, Nick! I agree with you on all accounts. However, the ID4 still has a lot to offer. I hope you receive yours soon
Thank you for this POV and for watching, Keith!
0-60 in 7.5 seconds is a decently quick time. Back in the 80s that would be premium sports car territory but then I guess I am sounding old.
That's a good way to look at it! Quick enough for most daily drivers of a crossover, I think. I wouldn't pay more just to go a little quicker.
Electrify America is almost non existent in my area so as much as I like the ID4 it's a no go for now. I'm going to revisit all this in 4 or 5 years.
They do have some large investments coming, but certainly they need to get to it and double down.
I agree with you, I hope all of the legacy auto companies get it together!
The Canadian version of the id4 does come with the heat pump. Sadly, not in the USA
It has the best A/C for an EV
It definitely does the job!
a tip for dust is to add a swiffer duster to your arsenal along with baby wipes you already use :)
We have one, Tim! Only issue is that you have to use it every single day. 🤣
@@evhelphub Haha okay! xD
Been waiting to get my ID 4 since October 2021, the dealership says it "should" arrive by November 2022. This review is in alignment with what I'm hearing across the board - it's a great car, but the software is mediocre. Hopefully the long overdue update will resolve this frustration many have been expressing.
Same here. I made phone call to VW this morning. We might receive it by February in next
I have heard good things about the latest software. Sadly, early owners aren't able to get it yet, not sure why. Fingers crossed your ID4 arrives soon!
Really good video! Straight to the point 👉
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words, Darien!
Nice balanced review. Thanks.
Thank you, Mike!
Thank you! Great video!
Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
Sadly, the Canadian version of the id.4 has a heat pump. Why not the US version?
Hope they get the software issues sorted. This looks like a good car for a family.
Indeed, it is! I'm not confident they will be able to fix it on our models, but hopefully a minor refresh in 1-2 years will come with a stronger processor.
Sold mine.
Sorry to hear that it didn't work out for you guys. Room for improvement for sure.
No fun no frilla. Looks cool. No elect for me...yet
We’ll done!
Thank you for watching, Gary!
Thx for the informations.
I saw a video of a guy who had a Chevy bolt EUV and trim is falling off and the insert for the door handle is coming off as well. Cheap construction
Dang, that's too bad.
Charging , anxiety to track battery q00 ttimes more than gas gauge
i wish it came with smaller wheels, my came with 20s and i rather have 18s for smoother ride and better range
We have one on order as well.
don't mind the sound it's like star wars
Great review👍
Thank you so much, Shaun!
Very odd.
Vw quality ..still good.
Just too expensive
It's an underrated car, imo.
great balanced review.
Thank you, Werner!
Blind spots look positively diabolical in this car.
Not at all, actually. Great visibility. Very large side view mirrors, good seating position. Very easy to drive and navigate, no problem.
In the EU .. the ID4 has a net on that middle plastic, at floor level.
i wish folks would just put their conclusions at the beginning of the video
I know this is your opinion,, but annoying?? that was the coolest sound ever,, sounded like a spaceship lol
Haha, I've gotten that comment a few times now. I have some sensory things and this definitely triggers them. I prefer the Tesla/Rivian implementation that sounds like a whooshing sound, which you can't hear in the cabin with the windows up.
What do you think of the new ID5 coming out??? Thanks
much better than a Tesla.
Software updates....who needs them ?
Did you ever post a video about the software update on the ID4? I can’t find it.
No, I haven't. I'm just integrating it with my 3 year review which will be out by mid-May, so stick around for that! :)
That slow speed noise is nothing compared to the Tucson Hybrid and PHEV. Now that noise is annoying.
@@evhelphub How did you manage that to tone it down?
Really? 🤔
great video.
Thank you for watching!
How often do you rotate the tires?
I got one 3 weeks ago all is well but really hate the way they’ve put the break paddle & accelerator you cannot slide your foot across as break paddle is 3-4 cm higher that accelerator,
Really don’t like that in fact it’s pretty dangerous.
@@evhelphub Hey! Thank you for the quick response. That all makes sense. I’m assuming that the AWD’s range is a bit less, correct? Thanks again.
@@evhelphub Great info! Thank you very much. I’ll def check out your other posts.
You're welcome! I hope you enjoy the ID4 (if you get one).
With that torque, the tires will go bald pretty quick unless you drive it like ice cars.
I am considering buying an ioniq 5 or id4 or volvo xc40 recharge. Which one will you consider me?
I'm considering this vehicle....my 08' jetta was smashed by a tree 2 days ago, had it since new 😢
Insurance totalled it, time for a new VW, no new jettas at our car dealership, so looking at the ID4 this weekend.
So to go from the east coast to the West Coast how many hours of charging time do you have compared to filling up with gas and leaving in 10 minutes doesn't sound like a good idea to me
How do you like the light interior color? It looks really good but is it hard to keep it clean? Especially the steering wheel and the seats.
I love it! Not hard at all to keep clean. Very easy, in fact. 50k miles in no permanent marks or wear at all. Highly recommend!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for watching, Keith!
Appreciate!
Well for me a dysfunctional infotainment computer is a no go 150%. Hopefully for VW and customers the bugs are things from the past
I can understand that. It is very frustrating. We have a Tesla Model Y on the way that will likely replace the ID4 as our weekend car.
nice video. I should have my 2022 in a month. Waiting on a software update at port. How are your tires holding up?
Thank you - great to see you in the comments again, by the way! :) The tires are still in "good" condition but are slightly more slippery than they used to be. I expect we will be changing them in early 2023 at around 30,000 - 35,000 miles or so.
Geeezum. Shouldn’t the tires last longer than 35K?
Any news on software updates? Any improvement?
Updated 3 year review coming in a couple of weeks, stay tuned!
you know what car doesn't have rear cross traffic alert?.... a Tesla Model Y.
That is correct and a shame.
