Will.... I just tried the bleach method on the chrome parts to my '64 Ford Stocker... worked like a charm in 12 minutes!! Thanks so much for your "experiment" - saved me a lot of time and money.
I will allways strip box chrome to make it look better it has never let me down.Now its worth mentioning that there is a world of difference between Tamiya and A.M.T.
I am an old codger who remembers back to a 60s model magazine article which stated freshly "chromed" parts were matte finish and the gloss was clear lacquer applied afterward. I noticed your matte chrome parts were stripped quite quickly, even just the underside of the fender which would not receive a clear coat. Your gloss parts took much longer and required lye to remove. Obviously Tamiya utilizes a clear that bleach does not interact with. Just an observation.
Depending on the kit maker, and the age of the kit, bleach doesn't always work. I have found that Tamiya kit chrome is some rugged stuff. Also, some of the chrome on older AMT-MPC ERTL kits can be a pain to remove also. There are a few things I have used, Bleach being one. Brake Fluid. Krudd Kutter. Purple Power etc. So far, I have been able to get by with the Bleach or Purple Power. Good video Will.
Will, The possible issue you were getting was that the chlorine was reacting to the aluminum making aluminum chloride and therefore, like when I make a circuit board, the chlorine may be mostly used up and not reacting as fast so it may help to change the solution when you pull out some parts that are done. Informative as usual, I've used gel bleach in the past but only done a couple of models that i needed to strip chrome from and found the same thing with the satin and bright chrome finishes, scuffing the surface with some 0000 steel wool seemed to hlp give the bleach something to bite into, possibly due to the quality of the finish. Keep this up and I'll start calling you bunsen!
Break fluid (I have used DOT4) works well for paint stripping. Lacquer paints, primers, acrylic paint. No problem at all. I think people are confusing paint stripping with chrome stripping hence the informations about using break fluid.
Caustic soda (drain cleaner) made into a solution is the best home chrome stripper ever. It'll strip parts in a few minutes dependent on the strength you make up . Beware though, it can be nasty stuff if you're not careful. Read the directions on the container.
Metallized styrene parts often have a heavy coating under the plating. It might be a varnish or lacquer. I think it’s there to smooth out the surface, so the chrome is really shiny. I find that this stuff is way harder to remove than the metal. Another compelling reason to remove the plating is that fine detail is often lost under this undercoat. I imagine what ever this stuff is, it’s probably not soluble in bleach.

Has anyone here worked with bleach for stripping Revell chrome? I'm trying to make an army truck build and I'm curious as to if bleach will work for me.
Used the bleach method to strip the chrome from the wheels and center console on the Revell Ferrari F430 spider. took 3 bloody days to get them fully clean. Them Germans are serious about that chrome!
What do you think if i want to remove the chrome only on a small area of one part because half of the part is already painted and i just want to sink this small area in the bleach. Can it comes off the acrillyc paint above the bleach? (and the chrome off which part stay inside the bleach) i know that is interesting question but i dont want paint it again... ;(:D
I make a motorcycle front spring member (or gear) where i painted the upper area, only the under braking and wheelholding part not but i want to detail painting this part. There are a brembo text and some screw and i think without this chrome layer i will able paint it more accurate. So i want to get off the chrome only on this under part. For more information about my plan:)
An other question. It is neccesary to thinning with water the bleach or i have to be careful how i thinning it. 1:1 water and bleach for example or it is not neccesary. Maybe i hear it in the video just my english is not good as i can hear it out. Thank you!
The problem with brake fluid is that it attacks the plastic (dehydrates?) and the plastic is prone to crack. I used to use brake fluid to strip paint from car bodies and I had once one car that has literally cracked in half due to the brake fluid
could not disagree more with the thought that removing chrome does not make it more realistic... that is not true in my opinon.. stripping chrome and using alclad to duplicate realism is by far a successful recipe...
@@barpfoto no will…it’s opinion…when it comes to aluminum rims kit chrome looks toyish…for sure…polished aluminum gives the rims way more realism…again…it’s opinion….
@@barpfoto it is an opinion…however we will have to agree to disagree…I have seen a lot of great models on a show table that got first place awards with the kit chrome stripped…I personally have found it does look more realistic…but it’s okay…everyone has their view…neither is wrong…

muriatic acid is used to etch concrete before painting. You can find it at any box store that sells concrete flooring paint.

you can but as a rule paint does not stick well to aluminum. and none of the above. for standard metallics i use mrp.
@jimbolaiya You can sand them down to make the surface rough and that helps but not as dependable as removing the chrome to the plastic.

Could the properties in the bleach been absorbed with the first parts and was so dilated it couldn't continue to stripping the thicker pieces.

i did on some vintage revell. it took a while and it didn't get the lacquer layer.

Super Clean doesn't work for hubcaps , must only work for cheap chromed parts like hot wheel cars where they don't really use real chrome.

I use purple power and a $20 ultrasonic cleaner from eBay it takes 5 to 10 minutes

I have a 20 yr old bottle of Castrol Super Clean it literally wipes chrome off plastic

Don't do like I did and use a disposable aluminium dish. It seemed like a good idea, but the liquid dissolved the aluminium.
