On the TesTors 0.25 fl oz. “Brush cleaner”… when you need to clean a brush just…. Dip it directly into container….. all colored paints and after about 2 Models you’ll have you own Black wash….. At Least that’s how it turned out for me… Example….happened to be only half a container left… it made a great Black-wash for my 67 Impala… really worked well and what’s GOOD….. it is free.
Here's a little tip I discovered while working on a '32 Ford grill. Building a channelled '32 sedan, the grill and grill shell were too tall. So, I had to section them. The shell was no problem, but I had to take about 1/4" out of the grill, which of course was a solid piece of plastic. So, after getting the new edges of the grill as straight as possible, I glued them together. As careful as I was, this still left the new seam showing across the center of the grill, and this would show terribly as I wanted to black-wash the chrome. So, what I did was put chrome metal foil over the grill, rubbed the foil into the grooves of the grill with a Q-tip. and then black-washed the foil. It took a couple of tries to get it look right, but it came out okay.
Luca, just watched your video on toning down chrome parts. I have found that a wash of Tamiya smoke over the chrome does add the shadows but more importantly it warms up the chrome color and also makes it look more realistic.

Dad and I building that thing together after he got off work from the Coal Mines… I just built A 70’s trans Am… And it turned out great… I have been watching UA-cam videos to guide me… surpassed my expectations of the build. Glad I found this. I've been exclusively doing military models, but recently busted out a bunch of old car kits in varying states of completion. I've never tried to make the chrome look realistic so I'm excited to give this a try. Thanks for the detailed discussion of your technique!

Back in the 1960s, I used India ink same as you use panel line accent. It could be thinned with alcohol. Worked pretty great. But I couldn't tell you the last time I saw India ink in a store. I used to get it at stationery stores or art supplies. But a lot of art is digital now. And people in offices don't use fountain pens anymore either.
So many ways to make "washes" there's a ton of ready made washes. Check out some of the washes that are more considered for mini figurines. As far as making your own there's acrylic cut down using black brown or even other colors. Oil paints (that's right the canvas painting kind) cut down and finally inks they can be great and are extremely good to use to get into complex deep details. All are pretty easy to clean up if you over do it or get it where you don't want it. Don't just check out the model builders but the scale figurines and table top gaming on their terrain pieces.
Hello, I'm Lance from Phoenix Az. I just wanted to mention that real 57 chevys body trim is not aluminum, it is polished stainless steel. One exception is on the belair side panels the ribbed panel is anidized aluminum. I like your video's very informitive.

Awesome channel. I wash chrome parts before applying detail, the same as I do with the other parts. It seems to help the wash setup a lot better. Ot at least I've convinced myself it does.
In the ole' days (I still use) I would save the old "dirty" paint thinner (especially dark colors) & use that for a wash. There wasn't any wash to buy when I was younger, besides my son can't say I don't recycle. Chrome parts are not affected by thinners in washes, that's why you have to scrap it off to repaint or glue. Sometimes I'd spray a gloss clear on painted parts to help with the "pooling" in screens, open side of cooling louvers (i.e). Waited a day or so for wash to dry, then dull coat over. Model railroaders (me) have been using this technique to give screens a 3D look.
Great Job ... We often do things different n it builds our Skills n Techniques by seeing how Someone else's done it For my Grilles I do one of 2 things Quite Different... My Earliest Method was Mask off outer Edge w Making tape... Then Spray the remaining exposed grid with Very light but WET coat of Testors/Practa flat black. While it's Still wet I take paper towel wrapped Popsickle stick. Lightly moist w thinner n light rub black off raised ridges of Grill. The Flat paint is Heavier than a Wash. My 69 monogram Z28 grilles stunned my friends my step dad was proud too he got me those kits Or. I use Coarse Wet or Dry Sandpaper wetted w Warm water n dish soap wrapped around popsicles stick n Sand thru Grille slowly from Back to actually slow mill open the Grille it takes practice To get right start w 220 or 320 then switch down to 400 n 600 as closer to open as it gets thinner Holding part Chrome side towards a bright light the thinned Shadow of where holes will be will show too and light touch w #11 exacto will know thinned area open Looks fantastic done. AMTs Try Five pickups works wonders Revels 79 Ford Ranger step side ditto
Sorry if I sound nit picky, but when I was younger, I could paint the lettering on the tire sidewalls with a brush that only had 4 or 5 hairs in it, and you could read every word down to the tire pressure text, without a smear or smudge. Us old racers kept our cars engine cleaner than you make it look too..lol. I think you kinda over did the wash on the blown Hemi in the Willy, it looks like the guy has oil blowing out all over the injectors, blower and down between the blower and valve covers. Same goes for the bumper bullet insert on the driver side on the 57, looks like it's full of dirt or oil. Plus you should have glued the top blower pulley on the Willy, with the missing tooth, missing tooth on the bottom so it could not be seen so easy. Beautiful color on the Willy, I really like the finish from what I could see, super clean with a very nice gloss ! I use to use black carpet thread and wire insulation from I think 20 or 22 gauge wire, ( sized to fit model scale ) . Cut insulation with a razor around and pull it off the wire... glue it to the ends of the thread and poof you have made ignition wiring. I did that back in the late 60's, before it came in kits. Who would have thought a kid of 7 or 8, would think of using thread for the wire and the insulation for the boots on the spark plugs and distributor cap ends.
The two mustang II Fire Fighter models in the background make me smile. I have one and its the only model I own, it has followed me around for years at four different houses. And I still havent built it. Watching yours and other channels is making me think its going to get built soon.

Just flat black spray paint in a cap makes a good wash also. DULL COAT is one of my best friends and duplicolor has a tall can for wheels that works great. 😎👍🇺🇸
I use the panel line accent for panel lines. To accent them. Just about every race car I have seen or show car is pretty darn shinny. I strip and repaint all my chrome to make it look more real. I never wash them though. Just me. Yours look great for a weekend race car. Great video and some great tips. Thanks for sharing...
I like to use SEMI-MATTE or SEMI-FLAT or SEMI GLOSS sprays on my chrome. By using the "semi" clears, these tone the look of "TOY-LIKE" scale chrome down a little bit better WITHOUT making the scale chrome look too dull... Just my personal preference, that's all...

I'm 68 and in my day we or I used a flat clear spray on most chrome and sometimes on the glass to kill the strong glare. And to soak up the excess wash I always used a Q-tip.

I put paint on valve covers let it sit on the crome wipe it off it looks anodized or mask of the valve covers if they are fined put vaseline on top of the fins and paint in between the fins let it dry then wipe the vaseline off the top of the fins then take the tape off the outside it looks cool paint does not stick to vaseline I also put black shrink tube from harbor freight over the radiator hoses you can use it for heater hoses Great video thank you that makes the crome look realistic the trim on a 57 Chevy is stainless it looks cool Around Christmas time check a store called Ollie's I think that's how you spell it it's a big discount store I baught a bunch of model kits there cheap I got some battleships and airplanes to I think I remember paying like 10 or 15 dollars a piece fore the big battleships in a regular hobby store there like 30 + and the cars I bought for 10 dollars a piece I remember when I was a kid they were about 5 to 8 dollars thanks inflation lol
Awesome video. One thing I recently notice also was the fact that the window seals on the older cars do show beyond the edge of the chrome. In the case of the '57 Chevy, the inside edge is black seal so the thickness of the detailing should relate to that. I was always finishing a build and noticing how "Thick" the chrome looked when in fact it isn't all chrome. AND also, have you ever used a very very transparent blue to replicate the reflection of the sky that everyone is accustom to seeing on cars? I was thinking of trying it.
I use watch gears on my motors for the pulley's and I use a certain rubber band that's wide and it actually looks like a real belt. I usually put decals on my belts to make em look more realistic but I highly recommend using watch parts because you can bypass painting that belt and the pulley's but I should upload some photos of it you would never go back to painting those belts

May I suggest Tamiya smoke? Air brushed lightly on full bumpers like early 70s. until its good to your eye. I like the wash and aluminum look too. Great video
I Remember seeing a process where you prime and pour some product with water over anything and it goes chrome. There was a green car in hot rod magazine that was done with this process. I think it is similar to how they make mirrors.

Have you ever flat-coated an engine (the non-chrome parts), after painting it? I think it looks more realistic. Try it once, if you haven't already. I'd love to know what you think.
You can also create the same effect by putting a few drops of black paint into some thinner. You need very little black, just experiment. Use it as a wash.
Have looked everywhere in my immediate area and cannot find wash, bummer. Cal. Freaks out with people shipping "cancer" causing items into state. Have had to substitute things before.... Thanks for great videos
FYI, on most cars the Chrome around windshields and down the sides was done out of highly polished stainless some cars didn't have aluminum in the grills and of course most engine components were made from aluminum to keep the weight down
@RDF You are Correct ! and it WAS a BRIGHT, chrome like shine, when polished up and taken care of regularly, NOT aluminum ! Chevrolet also used stainless for the windshield trim, rear window trim and the top window flip flap on the 2 door 57 hardtop Bel Air. I should know, I polished all of it on my 2 57's and on my friends Tri Fives... all with a buffer wheel off the cars and a fine finish polish by hand when mounted in place.They even used stainless on the interior trim on door, the window fur strip outer trim between the glass and body and inner side panels, along the back seat side panels and trim on dash board insert. The Tri Fives were awesome and still are today. I'd take any mint Tri Five over a New car, even a Chrysler / Dodge putting out 700 or 900 horses, any day of the week. All the old cars were built right, not like the junk computers on wheels, they call cars now days. Thanks for being a car guy RDF.

I think maybe putting the black wash on the wheel after the flat might look better. I never understood why they made those camero grills chrome when they were never full chrome.
Luka, I realize this video is from a few years ago, however, I would like to know what glue you used to glue the Breathers on the Valve Covers. Seriously. I built the Stone, Woods and Cook version of the same kit. While trying to detail the engine, I would knock those tiny breathers off. I did it several times. Why? I used the Model Masters thin glue in the black bottle. What the heck would work better. I ruined the paint on the body. I bought another body to finish the kit off and just know those will get knocked off again. Jay PS, yes, I did remove the Chrome on the parts.
Great video! I'm somewhat new to building model cars so this was helpful. Do you seal the wash you put into the grill with any kind of clear coat or do you just leave it?
We think of "scale" as a definition of model size, that is, 1/24 vs 1/25 vs 1/35 etc. But scale also defines an appearance, a sense that something that is actually perfect in scale can look just a little bit wrong. Paint finish and chrome reflection live under this umbrella in my opinion. I tend not to overpolish my paint finishes because I don't want a shine that in 1:1 scale would be four inches deep. The same applies to model chrome. It can be too much of a good thing. Too much chrome on a small, highly detailed part actually hides the part's shape. Overall, tons of bright work on almost any model makes it look like a trailer queen - all show and very little go. I use this method to tone down chrome quite often, to great effect.👍

Well stocked hobby stores will have India inks in a variety of colors for those who practice calligraphy !

Awesome Video! I use a drop of Black Acrylic craft paint to do my Black wash ! It works Pretty good. A drop to a 1/4 Cup of warm water.

I've used the dullcoat before as well as the semi-gloss satin coat and Tamiya's smoke. They all provide great effects to your kit chrome.

I'm 68 and in my day we or I used a flat clear spray on most chrome and sometimes on the glass to kill the strong glare. And to soak up the excess wash I always used a Q-tip.
I love your outtakes brother. Lol. This is a very helpful vid for builders like myself I struggle a lot with “blackwashing”. Now I know that there is actual products out there that are made for such things. Thanks man.

I put paint on valve covers let it sit on the crome wipe it off it looks anodized or mask of the valve covers if they are fined put vaseline on top of the fins and paint in between the fins let it dry then wipe the vaseline off the top of the fins then take the tape off the outside it looks cool paint does not stick to vaseline I also put black shrink tube from harbor freight over the radiator hoses you can use it for heater hoses

Around Christmas time check a store called Ollie's I think that's how you spell it it's a big discount store I baught a bunch of model kits there cheap I got some battleships and airplanes to I think I remember paying like 10 or 15 dollars a piece fore the big battleships in a regular hobby store there like 30 + and the cars I bought for 10 dollars a piece I remember when I was a kid they were about 5 to 8 dollars thanks inflation lol

Awesome video. One thing I recently notice also was the fact that the window seals on the older cars do show beyond the edge of the chrome. In the case of the '57 Chevy, the inside edge is black seal so the thickness of the detailing should relate to that. I was always finishing a build and noticing how "Thick" the chrome looked when in fact it isn't all chrome. AND also, have you ever used a very very transparent blue to replicate the reflection of the sky that everyone is accustom to seeing on cars? I was thinking of trying it.

I use watch gears on my motors for the pulley's and I use a certain rubber band that's wide and it actually looks like a real belt. I usually put decals on my belts to make em look more realistic but I highly recommend using watch parts because you can bypass painting that belt and the pulley's but I should upload some photos of it you would never go back to painting those belts

just to let you know the trim on the sifed and around the windows was polished stainless steel manufactures didnt change to aluminum until the 70s.

May I suggest Tamiya smoke? Air brushed lightly on full bumpers like early 70s. until its good to your eye. I like the wash and aluminum look too. Great video
I Remember seeing a process where you prime and pour some product with water over anything and it goes chrome. There was a green car in hot rod magazine that was done with this process. I think it is similar to how they make mirrors.

Is there also something to brighten up detail? Like doing the opposite of what you did? Maybe just that color but in white?
Have you ever flat-coated an engine (the non-chrome parts), after painting it? I think it looks more realistic. Try it once, if you haven't already. I'd love to know what you think.
You can also create the same effect by putting a few drops of black paint into some thinner. You need very little black, just experiment. Use it as a wash.

FYI, on most cars the Chrome around windshields and down the sides was done out of highly polished stainless some cars didn't have aluminum in the grills and of course most engine components were made from aluminum to keep the weight down

The "chrome" side molding on the Tri Fives were stainless not aluminium. A lot of early year cars were using it also for their trim.
@RDF You are Correct ! and it WAS a BRIGHT, chrome like shine, when polished up and taken care of regularly, NOT aluminum ! Chevrolet also used stainless for the windshield trim, rear window trim and the top window flip flap on the 2 door 57 hardtop Bel Air. I should know, I polished all of it on my 2 57's and on my friends Tri Fives... all with a buffer wheel off the cars and a fine finish polish by hand when mounted in place.They even used stainless on the interior trim on door, the window fur strip outer trim between the glass and body and inner side panels, along the back seat side panels and trim on dash board insert. The Tri Fives were awesome and still are today. I'd take any mint Tri Five over a New car, even a Chrysler / Dodge putting out 700 or 900 horses, any day of the week. All the old cars were built right, not like the junk computers on wheels, they call cars now days. Thanks for being a car guy RDF.
very nice technique ,it's like you said fooling the eye.
On the wheels, apply your wash first then spray it with the dull coat, it works better.

I never done the India Ink. Never though of it. Ill have to check that out.
I think maybe putting the black wash on the wheel after the flat might look better. I never understood why they made those camero grills chrome when they were never full chrome.
Luka, I realize this video is from a few years ago, however, I would like to know what glue you used to glue the Breathers on the Valve Covers. Seriously. I built the Stone, Woods and Cook version of the same kit. While trying to detail the engine, I would knock those tiny breathers off. I did it several times. Why? I used the Model Masters thin glue in the black bottle. What the heck would work better. I ruined the paint on the body. I bought another body to finish the kit off and just know those will get knocked off again. Jay PS, yes, I did remove the Chrome on the parts.

May I suggest Semi flat Tamiya and the Blackwash after on your wheels ,works for me
Great video! I'm somewhat new to building model cars so this was helpful. Do you seal the wash you put into the grill with any kind of clear coat or do you just leave it?
Nope. There is no need to.
We think of "scale" as a definition of model size, that is, 1/24 vs 1/25 vs 1/35 etc. But scale also defines an appearance, a sense that something that is actually perfect in scale can look just a little bit wrong. Paint finish and chrome reflection live under this umbrella in my opinion. I tend not to overpolish my paint finishes because I don't want a shine that in 1:1 scale would be four inches deep. The same applies to model chrome. It can be too much of a good thing. Too much chrome on a small, highly detailed part actually hides the part's shape. Overall, tons of bright work on almost any model makes it look like a trailer queen - all show and very little go. I use this method to tone down chrome quite often, to great effect.👍

I think of you add an acrylic flat over the Tamiya wash which is enamel, it will work okay.
