  • Stiff spotted ingenious songwriter Jona Lewie as he experienced success as a member of Brett Marvin and The Thunderbolts and off-shoots Terry Dactyl and The Dinosaurs. His career with Stiff spanned five years, and saw the release of 11 singles, the fourth of which was the synth-pop masterpiece "You'll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties", which made it into the UK Top 20.

    That "bass didgeridoo" as you call it sounds phenomenal on Vinyl record as it accentuated the record spinning and gives it a lot of texture. LOVE IT!

    Jona Lewis was Terry Dactyl ?! I bought that record in the summer of /72 when I first visited England . Still love it . Win or Lose by Jona Lewis a great rocker .

      Win or lose is by Lew Lewis Reformer, stiff records buy 48. Nothing to do with Jona as far as I'm aware.

    Perhaps it was the twinkle in his eye and the cleft Kirk Douglas chin that was his appeal, but for me it was the synth sound especially that synth 'didgeridoo', the great tag line and the female b-vox that made me buy it and love it still. Talk of quirky? hear the Burocrats b-side.

    wow, very interesting! I always loved this song - but for a looong time I did not know who the singer was (yes, kidzz, that was before the internet and Shazam) ... thanks for all that background info!

    The thing is, I attended uni as a mature age student - I was about 26 when I entered. Of course armies. We’re a big part of student life - especially if toy were studying any of th ‘humanities’ subjects, as the contact hours weren’t as demanding as the sciences. And yes, the kitchen was the central element of most parties, that after all was where the boozeze was & unless you were dancing, using one of the bedrooms, the only place to hold a conversation. So when this came out (I was in my honours year in 1980), it really was so true!.😊
