Emmylou is fantastic. She, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt recorded two albums together Trio and Trio II blending their 3 superstar voices together in fantastic harmonies. Three women making music together without a hint of ego. Give one of their live performances a watch and you'll be blow away.

If you've ever seen, "O Brother Where Art Thou" and been taken in by the sirens singing in the river, Emmy Lou Harris was one of those three singers. (And not for nothing, but the other two were Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss, who sang Whiskey Lullaby with Brad Paisley.) You've tapped a gold mine of talent if you stay on this path!

Emmylou Harris gathered some of the world's greatest roots musicians and dubbed them “The Hot Band.” That group included guitarists Rodney Crowell, and Albert Lee, steel guitarists Hank DeVito and Steve Fishell, keyboard player Glen D. Hardin, bassist Emory Gordy Jr., and drummer John Ware.

I see the look on your face as you listen. I probably had the same.
Now imagine being 14 years old in 1975, and all of this is brand new. A couple of years go by, and one day you see an ad in the paper saying Emmylou Harris is coming to town, tickets are $5, so you scrape up the $5, and you go. It's one of the most amazing performances you've ever witnessed, better than Led Zeppelin. You holler just right, and she looks right at you, smiles, and says "thank you" and the very next song they play is this one. 45 years later, Emmylou Harris and all of her amazing music still knocks you out just as much as it did in 1977.
I used to casually entertain the idea that she was a space alien, but the simple reality is she is just an extremely beautiful and talented lady with a relentless work ethic, impeccable taste in music, and the ability to find some of the finest musicians on earth to play in her band. You might call all of this a perfect storm, but whatever you call it, the results speak for themselves. I am happy for you, having recently discovered this amazing artist. If you are as flabbergasted as I was, you're going to have many hours of very enjoyable listening ahead. This lady has been prolific for decades, and she has released enough material to keep you busy for quite a while.

It pleases me to see someone react to the fabulous Emmylou. She doesn't get as much attention as she deserves. You look totally blissed out, a normal response to such beauty. She does that to people. She always has the best musicians, & I love the respect she shows by introducing them. They must really enjoy working with her. Would you like to react to "C'est la Vie, You Never Can Tell" from this same concert? It was the one just before Tulsa Queen. It's a Cajun-flavored Chuck Berry classic and really quite a treat to hear. Thank you for this one.

One time, my band was playing in a tiny bar across the street from the big place where she was doing a 3 night stint with the Nash Ramblers. After they finished, one of the guys in her band came in and listened to us play a set. After we finished, he asked me if I would be interested in selling my old 50`s Fender amplifier. I told him that I had just gotten it about a month before, and I had been wanting one for a long time. He understood, and he didn't press me any further, and then he invited our whole band to come over to their sound check the next day. We went, and sat in the back of the hall listening to them working on harmony parts and arrangements. It was a fascinating thing to watch them work, and I really wanted to go and say hello, but a sense of professional courtesy told me not to go and interrupt them while they were working. It seemed like the right thing to do, so I didn't get to meet Emmy that day, but I got a glimpse of how they do things in the major leagues. I am certain that one of the elements of Emmylou"s success has been her incredible work ethic and attention to detail, combined with a natural ability to lead with a gentle spirit. I say this only because I witnessed it first hand for over 2 hours that day. It was a very impressive thing to watch, and it's something I'll never forget as long as I live.

@@karolyn8644 yeah, thanks. That was a very interesting and fun day. I still have the old amp too, and I play it just about every day. This thing has been banging around California and Las Vegas since it was made in 1955. I've had it for 31 years and I've completely restored it.
      The fun never ends.

She said that she had played at Gilley's the year before & that it was like being the band at a huge gift shop haha. The ceilings were low & the accoustics were terrible but it was a fun place.

I used to either stay home on Saturday night or come home early if Emmylou was going to be on Austin city limits. Catching her performance was actually more important to me than running around being an idiot. (that was a good thing). One night, I was at my Mom's house, fixing the brakes on her car. She hollered out the kitchen window "Emmylou Harris is on Austin city limits" I said "can the brakes on the car wait till in the morning?" Mom said "Sure, come on in" Emmylou Harris actually bridged the generation gap at our house. My folks were WW2 era people, and they thought she was just great.

This is real country music. I was blessed to not only grow up on it (some of it was old by the time I found it) but I also learned how to sing by listening to the radio and trying to imitate it. The steel guitar player, bass player, keyboardist and drummer she stole from Elvis' Vegas stage band. Albert Lee latter became Eric Clapton's concert side man. Rodney Crowl was one of the best harmony singers available at that time and was married to Roseann Cash. He wrote Shame on the Moon, latter recorded by Bob Segar and dozens of other hits for various artists. He co-wrote, with Emmylou, the song you are reacting too right now. It truly was a "hot band".

Such a voice! Can pick her out from a crowd for sure. Check out the movie "Song Catcher". It's and independent film and loosely based on a true event. You will hear some voices you might recognize and tells a little of the evolution of Bluegrass and Country music from your next of the woods.

This was taken from a concert that was shown on Whistle Test and which is available on UA-cam. Just type in “ old grey whistle test Emmylou “ and you will see it. It lasts about 40 minutes so is too long for a reaction but you must watch it for your own benefit. You won’t be sorry.

Years later, Emmylou made an album titled "Cowgirl's Prayer.
I loved the entire album, but this was my favorite off of that album.

I don't know if you've reviewed Waylon Jennings. A real personality who sort of shows where 'Country' came from before it got sanitized. Stories about Waylon are legendary, like the one about him leaving a stick of dynamite in the washroom of a Road House whose manager neglected to pay up after a performance. They went away and it went off.

Loretta Lynn's sister is not Emmylou Harris. Her two sisters, Crystal Gayle and Peggy Sue also pursued music careers.
