Emmylou is a force of nature, as are her bands. The contribution she's made to contemporary music through not just her own music, but her championing amazing talent/players/songwriters and shining a spotlight on them (Rodney Crowell, Ricky Skaggs, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch and on and on and on) has changed the face of the music we love, for the better (imho). The epitome of grace, class and talent.
I joked that I was born with two left ears all my life, and didn't understand music theory until last year when I started playing the piano. But I knew music, since when I was growing up, we didn't ask to see someone's Instagram profile, we asked to see their record collection. No one was offended, it was a point of pride to look through the vinyl. So many of my friends (moi aussi) had Emmylou Harris, and we'd read the liner notes and rememberize the musicians on the records. Some people would say that a record was country, or country rock, or bluegrass, or fusion, I didn't care. I just listened to what I liked. This is bringing back so many Friday and Saturday night souvenirs...great memories. Your channel is really a treasure. I love your appreciation and knowledge of all kinds of music. You Rock. Merci.
I saw Emmylou Harris at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester in February 1976- an amazing concert. At that time James Burton was the guitar player but the rest of the band was the same. At one point, they went acoustic the pedal steel guitar player took Emory Gordy's bass and he played mandolin. James Burton played the dobro and Rodney Crowell and Emmylou played acoustic guitar while I think Glen D Hardin left his piano for a crafty smoke.. One of the greatest bands ever.
Emmylou at her best. Not only a masterful vocalist, but a brilliant musician musician..Past time she was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.❤❤❤

Emmylou Harris has one of the purest angelic voices in music. She has always surrounded herself with to notch musicians. Listen to her magnificent Wrecking Ball (dear God, mot Miley Cyris') album. Boulder to Birmingham from her debut album is a true heattbreaker...and a sheer beauty.,
This is the sound and look of my childhood! I was born in Roy Clark's hometown of Meherrin, Virginia in '68, and I would have been about 9 years old when this was performed. It was a strange time---people who looked like hippies were playing country music that sounded more "country" than what was coming out of Nashville. People can argue all day about Gram Parson and his contribution to country music, but one thing is certain---he introduced the world to Emmylou Harris! I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the whole country/rock swirl of that time, with groups like the Burrito Brothers, The Hot Band, The Byrds, Poco, and The Eagles. I just happened to have been playing some Poco yesterday, so it's almost miraculous that this review shows up on my UA-cam feed. Great job! Now, since you're on the other side of the pond, you've probably heard of the Northern Soul movement over there. It's similar to the Carolina Beach Music that I also love....but that's another review, and another story!

Emmylou Harris has been my idol for many years after I first heard Boulder to Birmingham and her records and we play many of her songs in my ukulele group (The Yardbugs). My wife and I saw Peter Asher and Albert Lee a couple of months ago in a very small intimate show, wonderful performances. My wife was not aware of Albert Lee's guitar god reputation and he didn't really display all his virtuosity given the nature of the performance. She however fell in love with his voice, song selections and his arrangements. Sometimes I think we forget about his impeccable musicianship with all his experience playing and performing with everyone who wants him on stage with them.
Another great analysis video. I saw Albert Lee last month, playing a gig at a bar in Rochdale. He’s 79 years old, not as quick as he was in this video but still an absolutely amazing guitarist. Got his autograph and shook his hand, hoping some of his magic rubs off on me 😊.
I was at the same gig in Rochdale and saw Albert again the following week in Bury St Edmunds (where he played and sang even better!) He'll be 80 in December and I don't know how much longer he can keep going. If you get the opportunity to see him perform live - grab it! I've also seen Emmylou perform live several times at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. The purity of her voice complements her simple, uncomplicated beauty. Her pitch and phrasing are perfect. She's 76 now and even more radiant than ever!

Saw Emmylou in July for my 4th or 5th time, she is always great. And Albert Lee - saw him join Rodney Crowell at a festival a few years back where Albert was also on the bill . They had a great time playing together, and I was smiling the whole way through.
One of the highlights of my life was seeing this incredible band five times. Fil, you seem so in awe of Albert that you're tongue tied. Albert's successor was Frank Rickard, someone you should investigate, he was amazing.

Fil, I actually saw Albert Lee perform in person when he was in Carlene Carter's band in the early 1990s. Carlene is June Carter Cash's daughter by her first marriage to legendary singer, Carl Smith. Albert Lee plays guitar on Carlene's 1990 hit song "I Fell In Love" and he is seen playing in the music video for the song.. Carlene Carter also co-wrote Emmylou Harris' 1978 hit song "Easy From Now On"

One of my favorite UA-cam video is of Albert Lee in the studio laying down guitar for Dave Edmunds song Sweet Little Lisa, while in the control room Dave, Nick Lowe, Huey Lewis, and Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy watch in awe. Then Edmunds (an exceptionally fine guitar player himself) goes on and on about how amazing Albert is. A truly fine show of respect for an often overlooked British guitarist from the golden age of British guitarists.
Albert did a clinic at my local music store, about 20 years ago. He was one of the nicest human beings I have ever been privileged to come across. Humility squared! A great storyteller, and he was only supposed to be there for an hour, but continued to regale us with stories for a little over two hours. The best 15 bucks I’ve ever spent!
Someone needs to make a movie about Emmylou and Gram Parsons. Those were amazing years and the grief shown in the song “ Boulder To Birmingham” leads you to believe it would be a compelling story.

Such a nice,quietly spoken and unassuming man,off-stage,but still blazing fast on stage at 79+ years old. I have a (quite rare)album called “Green Bullfrog “,which features Albert,and several of his contemporaries. Some are named,and some have nicknames,which are not deciphered on the album notes,leaving it to the listener to make their own guess as to who is who. Albert is on there,with Richie Blackmore,Jim Sullivan,Roger Glover,Ian Paice,and one other unnamed guitarist,which,I suspect,was Jeff Beck! There are four guitarists nicknamed as BOOTS,PINTA,THE BOSS and THE VICAR. Albert admitted to being PINTA;-“I was a milkman!”. The others ,including BEVY,on organ,and SORRY,on piano are left to the listener to determine! Oh,and at the bottom of the sleeve notes,it says”For maximum listening pleasure this LP must be played LOUD.”

It's always interesting watching a very good guitar player analyze or try to emulate a world-class guitar player. You can see that you know exactly what Albert Lee is doing, but actually doing it, yourself...that's a different thing altogether!

Great analysis, I've never particularly been a country music fan, so it's pretty impressive (and exhausting) to hear about how that style of playing is achieved. You have to respect that kind of patience.
I idolized her for years, but now I have regular appreciation finally. So, therefore, feel safe in watching this. I got to see her live back in the 80's or maybe 90's, and was captivated by her & by the big fancy rose on her guitar that changed colors. I don't even remember if she was with a band or not. 😂 if I start idolizing again, I'll just blame it on you Fil.
Fil, You're a trip! I bought this album when it was first released and played it through - always skipping this song because I felt Emmylou's voice was meant for ballads. I watched and listened to your analysis (of course) and seeing your enjoyment made me a little mad at myself for always skipping this song! I need to see if you've reacted to "Boulder to Birmingham" which she co-wrote with Bill Danoff of Starland Vocal Band. I loved their version, but Emmy's (written as a tribute to Gram Parsons)...Whew!!

Never heard this one before! She is one of my favorite artists. Growing up, I learned so much about singing from just listening to and trying to imitate her. One of my favorites is, "Prayer In Open D", which I learned for voice class and had hoped to sing in public one day.

This song remains on my top fav playlist today, as it has on various formats since it’s release. The album is one of those I remember the first time I heard it. When someone told me it was country, I was astounded-I was a little rocker and she wasn’t what I thought of when you say “country.”😄 This woman has so much talent, and she’s shown it for decades. Watch Emmylou playing Daniel Lanois' "Where Will I Be?" on Jools Holland in 1995 with the best rhythm section you'll ever hear and Lanois on the 12 string mandoguitar. I have to listen to it at least every few days, it's life-sustaining, transcendent beauty.

Who decides that this is actually necessary with great singers like this? Emmylou with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton is pure pleasure to listen to. My introduction to Emmylou was with during her bluegrass/traditional period when she came out with her album, Roses in the Snow. Her work with Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill was fantastic. She's introduced me to so many other artists through her work with them. Her musical integrity is inspiring.
Albert Lee, is a bad man, on that guitar, but, the whole band is perfection. I’ve always loved Emmylou Harris. I got see her at Jamboree In Hill , at Brush Run in Ohio, back in the early 80. She and Rodney Crowells harmonies are beautiful. If you want hear a great Emmylou song, check out her song, Every Time You Leave. This song is done, by Emmylou, and Don Everly. On his new Album, the late Jimmy Buffett does a cover of Bob Dylan’s Mozambique with Emmylou singing background. She also sang background on Dylan’s original version. She Still has the great voice!

I saw the Hot Band in a small club around that time in Northern California. James Burton was in the band at that show. I remember because he was billed a “featuring James Burton “, at the time I knew who he was more than Emmie. It was a great show.

I saw Keith Richards interviewed and he played a rift and the interviewer asked him how he did that and Keith said honestly, "I don't know." I took it as meaning my muscle memory did it.
That fast "chicken peck" guitar playing that Albert Lee is doing set a style for future hot Nashville session guitarists like Brent Mason during the 1990s on just about everyone's songs during that decade. Most notably on many of Alan Jackson's record's and many others. It became sort of the classic sound for uptempo country songs in the '90s.

The guy singing with EmmyLou and playing acoustic guitar is country singer Rodney Crowell. He’s one of my favorites too.
Rodney was the band leader for the “Hot Band”.

I got to see her live back in the 80's or maybe 90's, and was captivated by her & by the big fancy rose on her guitar that changed colors. I don't even remember if she was with a band or not. 😂 if I start idolizing again, I'll just blame it on you Fil.

Fil, You're a trip! I bought this album when it was first released and played it through - always skipping this song because I felt Emmylou's voice was meant for ballads. I watched and listened to your analysis (of course) and seeing your enjoyment made me a little mad at myself for always skipping this song! I need to see if you've reacted to "Boulder to Birmingham" which she co-wrote with Bill Danoff of Starland Vocal Band. I loved their version, but Emmy's (written as a tribute to Gram Parsons)...Whew!!

She ALWAYS does a KILLER show and covers alotta oldtime/BG standards (chestnuts ,as WE call them) . So glad ya featured her HERE ! Well done cypherin the haps at BG speeds in 2/2. When I joined the ALT.BANJO board around 96, I was pleasantly surprised findin the UK has a HUGE BG community as well? Speshally around Corby (who knew?) Thanks Fil !

Never heard this one before! She is one of my favorite artists. Growing up, I learned so much about singing from just listening to and trying to imitate her. One of my favorites is, "Prayer In Open D", which I learned for voice class and had hoped to sing in public one day.

I appreciate your appreciation of both country and rock. I also appreciate the ability of equally excellent musicians to exercise equally high levels of skill to make country to sound easy and lazy and rock to sound wild and out of control while both exercising equal skill and precision.
This song remains on my top fav playlist today, as it has on various formats since it’s release. The album is one of those I remember the first time I heard it. When someone told me it was country, I was astounded-I was a little rocker and she wasn’t what I thought of when you say “country.”😄 This woman has so much talent, and she’s shown it for decades. We’re lucky to have her.

another great analysis, Fil! Thank God no Melodyne back then...or when exactly did they start with "remastering"? Does Remastering necessarly mean pitch altering and autotune? Who decides that this is actually necessary with great singers like this? Emmylou with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton is pure pleasure to listen to. Apparently Ella Fitzgerald was so pitch perfect that the orchestra tuned to her voice. Keep up the great work. Cheers.
My introduction to Emmylou was with during her bluegrass/traditional period when she came out with her album, Roses in the Snow. Her work with Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill was fantastic. She's introduced me to so many other artists through her work with them. Her musical integrity is inspiring.

Albert Lee, is a bad man, on that guitar, but, the whole band is perfection. I’ve always loved Emmylou Harris. I got see her at Jamboree In Hill , at Brush Run in Ohio, back in the early 80. She and Rodney Crowells harmonies are beautiful. If you want hear a great Emmylou song, check out her song, Every Time You Leave. This song is done, by Emmylou, and Don Everly. On his new Album, the late Jimmy Buffett does a cover of Bob Dylan’s Mozambique with Emmylou singing background. She also sang background on Dylan’s original version. She Still has the great voice!

I saw the Hot Band in a small club around that time in Northern California.
James Burton was in the band at that show. I remember because he was billed a “featuring James Burton “, at the time I knew who he was more than Emmie.

That fast "chicken peck" guitar playing that Albert Lee is doing set a style for future hot Nashville session guitarists like Brent Mason during the 1990s on just about everyone's songs during that decade. Most notably on many of Alan Jackson's record's and many others. It became sort of the classic sound for uptempo country songs in the '90s.
