Huge Emmylou and Hot Band fan since the beginning. What talent. Of course Rodney Crowell, Albert Lee, Hardin, Devito, Emory Gordy Jr (Mr Patty Loveless), and later Rickey Skaggs. Albert is a premier guitarist originally from England and I loved his work in Clapton’s band during Money and Cigarettes, and then back to his Country roots with the reunited Everly Brothers. Wonderful person, great piano player and singer too. So lucky and thrilled to see him on his current tour this Friday night in our little town of Prescott, Arizona. Thanks for pointing Albert out, a real treasure.
Thank you for doing this video. She was one of my suggestions. She was so lovely with the voice of an angel. Love Hurts with Graham Parsons is heart wrenching. The friend who introduced her to me definitely had a thing for her! I get it.
You are talented enough to pick out talented musicians and tell why they have talent and communicate that talent and explain their talent. You really have a talent. As for Emmylou, what a talent.
Emmy’s voice just seems effortless - solid and smooth through the whole phrase. Unique timbre, with even a slight nasal resonance, that makes her feel as if there is an innocence, and homespun presence, nothing artificial. The perfect blend of voice with technically polished country. Great ballad singer!
Yes, that voice! Seems effortless, yes--but I remember long ago listening to her first solo album on an obscure label (Gliding Bird, Jubilee 1969) and being surprised how bland her voice sounded. That tells me she crafted her voice over time, making the voice itself her owncreation. Lovely expressive voice, some good original songs, and impeccable taste in selecting her repertoire. And I also love the gray/white hair.
Love, love, love Emmylou. She always played a Gibson J-200. Apparently she had every color they made. Her hair is white now, but her voice is still beautiful. Great video, Dear Fil, as always. You are the undisputed king of this UA-cam genre. ❤️
Laurie Kane I enjoy the sound and feel of jumbo guitars. I have an Epiphone EJ-200 and some other Jumbos. If you want to balance with banjos and fiddles, You gotta go Jumbo. ❤️
Laurie Kane I play old timey string band music. The hits of the 19th Century and 20th Century Folk Revival. I play guitar, banjo, bass, fiddle. I also play jazz and blues on electric instruments, but I keep that on the down low. My folk folk still haven’t forgiven Bob Dylan. 😳
There was a reason everyone wanted to play with Emmylou and Linda Ronstadt. They were musician's musicians. They respected the talents of each other and why they were often chosen for background singing or for duos.
Thanks Fil! As always you are thorough and informative in your music research! I was much too young to have appreciated Emmylou in the early part of her career but I absolutely remember the trio she did with Linda Ronstadt & Dolly Parton! That beautiful sweet country/folk voice was unmistakable!....✌❤🤘
@Andrew Ongais believe me, I know (& luv the talented ladies) and I'm enjoying his through dissertations on all talent levels. it's just the 1 after the other that seems a little obsessive.....? lol he does crack me up sometimes.
When it comes to Emmylou Harris, I can never decide which is more beautiful - her face or her singing voice. I never knew who Albert Lee was until I heard "Luxury Liner" - unbelievably great lead guitar performance. Had to pick my jaw off the floor.
Seeing and hearing them play that song was one of the highlights of my youth!! Albert Lee was just crazy on that lead, and actually got a standing ovation, never mind Emmy's perfect vocals.😁
Robert, Would you like to hear a really beautiful love song? Albert and Alvin Lee were in 10 Years After and "Let The Sky Fall" is a really great love song. If you like slow jamming psychedelic blues that is.
@@donolinger6904 Albert Lee (no relation to Alvin whose real name is Graham Barnes)) was never in Ten Years After although the drummer Ric Lee - also unrelated was. 🎤
I love your analyses Fil. It,s amazing you have so much passion for the good old stuff. We had great female singers back then. Joni, Melanie, Ann , Janis, Dolly, Emmylou,Linda ,clear lyrics, exelent singing they had it all ! So happy to have lived in the generation that gave us all these fab tunes and artists. There,s no songs like the classics.
When I was in college I worked at a Phillips 66 service station on Interstate 35 in San Marcos, Texas. I had the evening shift and was alone in the station. I saw a big bus pull into the station (unusual as we didn't sell diesel) and pull to the side of the parking area. I went out to see if I could help them and off walks Emmylou. I almost fell down. She was extremely nice and told me some details about her tour. I had not seen a celebrity in the station since Bob Lilly of the Dallas Cowboys stopped by a month or so before. Emmylou was a bigger thrill (since I was a Houston Oilers fan).
I have not heard anybody better at dissecting a performance and explaining each part so well that even somebody who does not play an instrument can understand.....like me. TY Fil.
Voice VOICE VOICE!!! Beautiful girl with the voice of a Goddess. Saw her around 79 when I was a teenager. One vivid memory was when she teased someone in the band(or all of them) by announcing they were legit bluegrass players from 'Pidgeon Roost' Kentucky. I'd say so with a name like that.
He is Gled D. Hardin, right? I read he was the piano player for Elvis, too? He is an amazing musician! So great playing for Emmylou, these were her and the bands best years, the best lineup of Emmylous career, in my opinion 😊
Aaand no one on this thread is going to mention Townes Van Zandt, or his version of His song (Pancho & Lefty)There's a video; go peek. Love Emmy, no dis intended.
I have had the opportunity to meet and hang with Albert Lee many times the past 8 years. He is humble and kind. When you see him live on stage he is Jaw dropping. Never heard a mistake. Ever. Don't be fooled like I was. He rarely used delay!!!
Shes always been one of my favorite female singers of any genre. You are right about the talent surrounding her. Always top notch. Thanks for your excellent analysis.
I idolized Emmy as a teenager and got to see her in concert once. :) I wore out her LPs "Pieces of the Sky", "Elite Hotel", "Profile" and "Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town".
I have loved Emmylou Harris for many years, ever since I heard that distinctive voice in my youth. This is a real treat hearing your analysis on her, Fil. I enjoy how you delve into many genre and musical styles.
GREETINGS FROM, Las Vegas! Hey, Fil! I revisited this Emmylou analysis video and I see that my comments are still on here. What an amazing job you did on this presentation. You are a true professional and so very well-schooled in reference to lyrical content, melodic structure and every other facet of music. So many genres of music. Well done, Fil. I am off to revisit your other ones.
Anyone who appreciates the enormous talent of Emmylou Harris has my support. The amount of background research you do is so impressive. I'm watching through your videos to see what else I can learn.
Sweet Emmylou...🎶 The voice of an angel. Truly she gets better with age though there's nothing she needs to improve on or prove to anyone, be it music fans or those in the business. Not many can really own that... Graham Parsons was the love of her life. She's never forgotten him. You're onto some great stuff Fil!😁🔥 Much respect!🙇♀️
Thanks so much for providing backstories along with your analyses! Your videos are very educational, and even provide subtle hints on how to better my musicianship!
Her album Wrecking Ball is one of the most perfect albums ever recorded. Also important to note all the other artists and songwriters Emmylou has helped, Gillian Welch for one. Emmylou is a very generous person in that way, always mentioning others, and promoting them. I've seen her a couple of times. I was at a Lucinda Williams show at the House of Blues in LA, on Grammy night when she won for Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. The House of Blues show started waaaaay late. Emmylou came to the show, after the Grammys, and did a song with Lucinda and her band. It was such a cool thing to see.
Hi Fil. Thanks for the wonderful analysis as usual. I was very fortunate to see Emmylou and the Hot Band when they played the Ulster Hall in Belfast in 1977. It was my first concert and I still remember it as if it was yesterday. When the band played their encores and left the stage, Emmylou came back and sat on a stool, playing her guitar and singing. Her voice was beautiful and haunting. There was not a sound in the auditorium from the audience. Everyone was hanging on her every word. I think it was one of the best performances I have ever heard.
AGAIN , you remind us all, and SO eloquently btw, how this music we’ve grown up with and loved and even taken for granted can be renewable every time we REALLY use our ears to listen. And your appreciation is a refreshing inspiration with the help of your knowledge at such a young age. You just continue to take advantage of this vast medium to educate and give us a new perspective that most of us “fans” were never privy to. Thanks so much! I can’t add anything to the detail you provide on this beautifully talented woman. She’s certainly one of the most enduring, brightest of stars, the likes of which we’ll NEVER see again. But her relationship to those around her have probably been the highlight of her career. She created a legacy of stars and uplifted everyone around her. Starting with Parsons and passing her considerable passion to Rodney, Albert, among so many others, there is a sizable family of which she is THE matriarch. And if the question was asked of those who e influenced musicians and singers who span EVERY genre, HER NAME is mentioned more than most I’ve heard. Rodney Crowell’s notable career as a singer songwriter is another story in itself. Thanks for pointing that out. Vince Gill is another, and don’t even get me started on the Eagles! Her music “family” is boundless. “Fortune” for this “Treasure” is without a doubt her legacies and her countless blessing bestowed! Keep up the great tradition! Awesome work!
I’ve been in love with Emmy for 45 years. That quote has been attributed to Willie and a host of other people. It’s true. My new crush is Rhiannon Giddens. She has the amazing voice combined with a great stage presence. And you can review her country, blues, rock, or opera performances. The MacArthur Foundation called her the archaeologist of African American music.
Thank you so much for your analysis, this help me know why I enjoy all this music, I am listening to individual sounds and focusing on each sound in their voices and to the individual instruments. This helps make the sounds and voices more exciting to listen to.
What a magic voice... Emmylou was also in the Last Waltz concert ( Singing Evangeline with The Band ) ! Yes Fil I'm still pushing for The Band playing The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down & The Weight ,Cripple Creek or The Shape I'm In all from the Last Waltz ! I can't choose just one because they are all so damn good.... especially their singer/drummer Levon Helm ! You always talk about playing and singing well Levon said it was easier singing while playing the drums 😆 He was so great ( R.I.P ) Thank you Fil 😎🤘
Amazing ! My Favorite Movie , The Last Waltz . I mean I’d die to be @ that concert . Everyone of those songs are amazing. Left a comment ,at the Beginning, Amos Lee, Old Violin , @ Arms of A Woman . Ray Lamontange . Empty,@ Let it Be Me ! So many amazing songs.
First time I listened to her was in Bob Dylan album DESIRE …and Iwondered who's this singe with this beautiful voice? ..she makes such a great duo with DYLAN in songs like ROMANCE IN DURANGO.
So appreciate Fil's "tutorials" to a non-musician like me, and truly am thankful for commenters who take the time to suggest other songs to listen to-had no idea that Ms. Harris sang with Bob Dylan. Thank you for giving me an online musical education!
I had been listening to Emmylou for decades when I finally got "Desire" and started listening. After a while it dawned on me -- I ran into the bedroom to my lady and said, "Listen to this." I played her a couple of tracks. I asked her who was backing Dylan and she couldn't quite tell. I said, "I think that's Emmylou Harris!" She about fell out of bed (which was quite a trick because she was paralyzed from the neck down). Later I checked the liner notes, and sure enough, it was. As if a Dylan album wasn't good enough by itself.
Saw Emmylou sometime in the late 70's in San Francisco. Was already a fan but seeing her live immediately cemented my adoration for this very special talent. Beautiful and distinct voice from an equally beautiful and unique woman.
I have to say that your knowledge, insight & research in your videos are amazing, I learn so much from your comments and appreciate it immensely, well done brother, great work!
Saw her at the Milwaukee Sommerfest in 1987. Breathtaking and beguiling. Although country is not really my thing I found myself dancing with 20-80 year olds in the aisles (and being told to sit down by the ushers).
Really great, would have guessed studio recording if not for video. Such a pleasure to see such restrained, confident playing. Thank you for the history, Fil, very interesting as always.
Thanks Fil...I was not that familiar with Emmylou's music..that is why I love your videos...I get to hear and learn about all the artists I would normally pass by😊 I do know Emmylou has beautiful white hair now❤
Hi Fil. Another great selection for us to enjoy along with your really thoughtful analysis. Emmylou and the band draw the audience in with their wonderfully restrained performance. Always love Emmylou. Thanks for sharing this.
A word that comes to my mind describing Emmy 's voice, which may not be a musical term PURE. I don't have the musical vernacular, but I not only can hear the music but good music is felt. I feel this music! FIL, I really appreciate your ability of breaking down the music in an analytical way. I also think it's great that you don't stick to just one musical genre. The diversity of music is what makes it so special.
Fil, it is always a pleasure to watch your analyses. You go so far beyond the typical “reaction” videos, and I always learn something new from you. Thanks for sharing your depth of knowledge, knowing your instruments and artists, and doing your homework on each video. Emmy Lou is a wonder; she deserves all the accolades she gets.
Later, Emmylou had another great lead guitarist with her band. It was the guitarist and lawyer Frank Reckard. Can hear him at this mastery live performance with the tune Luxury Liner. He was mentioned as a intelligent player in GuitarPlayer magazine. I did hear him with Emmylou at the Stavanger Country Festival here in Norway year 1987.
I like how you give history of the singers. Your review brings up so many points not normally brought up about a particular singer. On top of that you react to old and the new.
Voice is like no other, I have many favorite singers but she is in a category by her self; such Purity of Tone and sound And everything she sings; just beautiful 👍🏼🎶🎵🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Thank you and file for analyzing this terrific artist
She’s my absolute fav. I am lucky to own most of her albums What a voice. What a professional. She always picks great musicians to fill out her sound good one, Fil.
Good female singers are a dime a dozen. Singers of Emmylou Harris's calibre are like a needle in a haystack. She is one of the few whose voice literally sends shivers down my spine. I saw her live at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival about 25 years ago. Fantastic!
Your review is so right on & so appreciated! Yes, Levon's admiration of Emmylou is understandable! I was blessed to have helped organized an in-store appearance at the Tulsa Peaches Records & Tapes store in Mar 1981 when Evangeline got released. Her Roses in the Snow had come out recently & so we were JUST on the edge of her being too famous to have an in-store. As it was, there was a line for 4 hours waiting to meet her. She was gracious, friendly & stayed as LONG as she could. The Warner Bros video Sandman/I Don't Have to Crawl was out which brought her out to the mainstream America that might not have known about her...they loved her. We all loved her, even us girls! For me it's in admiration of her talent....;o) Her background vocals she did over the years for Linda Ronstadt, among others, show her willingness not to always be in the spotlight. I met up w/ her the following year to get her signature on a photo I had taken in the year before, again so gracious. I'm blessed to have met Rodney Crowell once & JUST met Albert Lee in San Juan Capistrano last April, what a class act & still SOOoo talented!! Kudos on another great analysis!!
You are trawling through the Trio❤️❤️ Thank you. Emmy Lou is the magic and the band is so talented. The Trio version of After the Gold rush is mystic. So you still have to do Dolly🕊
The subtle tightness of this band and the harmonies between the lead and the backing vocals good lord what an amazing track. I saw Rodney Crowell in a small theater in Texas play solo over the last few years goodness the writing the voice and the playing so good.

I was gonna mention her J-200's, but you did it for me!! Love Emmylou!
Laurie Kane
I enjoy the sound and feel of jumbo guitars. I have an Epiphone EJ-200 and some other Jumbos. If you want to balance with banjos and fiddles, You gotta go Jumbo. ❤️
@@futuredirected Totally agree, Samantha! Do you play Bluegrass?
Laurie Kane
I play old timey string band music. The hits of the 19th Century and 20th Century Folk Revival. I play guitar, banjo, bass, fiddle. I also play jazz and blues on electric instruments, but I keep that on the down low. My folk folk still haven’t forgiven Bob Dylan. 😳
Laurie Kane
What do You play, Laurie?
One of our national treasures. A voice of an angel. Stunningly beautiful.❤
Emmylou's voice is as beautiful as she is .
Thanks Lori!
Dude! ur killn me with this new fascination with these women singers. Keep the fun flowing mAn. We're loven it.....
@Andrew Ongais believe me, I know (& luv the talented ladies) and I'm enjoying his through dissertations on all talent levels. it's just the 1 after the other that seems a little obsessive.....? lol he does crack me up sometimes.
@Andrew Ongais No list of "best" female vocalists is complete without Jacqui McShee thrown in there.
@@cuda426hemi - That's what I get for thinking. Thanks for setting me straight. I appreciate it.
@@donolinger6904 That's what I get for being an *old* fart that used to sneak in the Boston Tea Party in '71 to see all those Lees.........¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 🎸
Now if Bum Phillips rolled up with Earl Cambell, Pastorini, and 7 Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders in a 73 Cadillac ????
Great story except... GO COWBOYS!!
WORK?!
Pigeon Roost is in eastern Kentucky. The post office closed in 1974. I love places with odd names like that. I live near Tyewhoppity.
Fil.. Wonderful talent and still sounds great.. As you said Albert Lee is a beast on many levels.. He can flat out play.. Good job
There's just no one like Emmylou Harris. She is absolutely beautiful & fascinating in so many ways.
That's my dad on piano. 😁💥
He is Gled D. Hardin, right? I read he was the piano player for Elvis, too? He is an amazing musician! So great playing for Emmylou, these were her and the bands best years, the best lineup of Emmylous career, in my opinion 😊
Sublime. ❤
She did a version of "Pancho and Lefty" several years before the famous version by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. I like her version better.
I think she performed Pancho and Lefty on this same Old Grey Whistle Test episode / program. I love her version too.
That was on the Luxury Liner album,i agree her version was better.
Me too!
Totally agree. Willie's sounded too upbeat and over produced - really dislike the intro on his version.
Grand lady of music, with perhaps the greatest harmonizing voice of all time!
Beautiful voice that has gotten better with age! Love the steel.Great band as well.
Thanks for the kind words!
Thanks Pegasus! i recall watching it live in 77 it blew me away! i didn't understand much then but i knew this!!
Thanks Pegasus - Could you do one on Barclay James Harvest "So you want to be a rock and roll star"
Your knowledge is much appreciated.
Anyone who appreciates the enormous talent of Emmylou Harris has my support. The amount of background research you do is so impressive. I'm watching through your videos to see what else I can learn.
Excellent homework and analysis on Emmylou Harris. excellent performance by all. thanks Fil.
Sweet Emmylou...🎶
The voice of an angel.
It’s incredible how knowledgeable Wing of Pegasus describes his subject, very sympathetic, engaging and appealing person!
She's so cool. I especially love when she harmonizes with Alison Krauss
Sensational band and Emmylou Harris is so smooth and pure. GP and Grevious Angel are stellar albums!!
I love her original version of _From Boulder to Birmingham_ ...
Rockinghorse Winner , Emmy wrote it about Gram, Linda Ronstadt helped her lots after Gram died, Emmy said it was like her life had been whacked off,
My all-time favorite song as well❤️
Yes yes yes
Such a beautiful song, amazing.
Thanks!
That was a beautiful tribute to Emmylou Harris. Thank you for your fine hand craft and your desire to write that I appreciate it.
Saw them five times in the late seventies and early eighties. One of the greatest and fondest memories of my life
First time I listened to her was in Bob Dylan album DESIRE …and Iwondered who's this singe with this beautiful voice? ..she makes such a great duo with DYLAN in songs like ROMANCE IN DURANGO.
With Dylan on Desire was my into to Emmylou as well. Though not one of his most popular albums, I can't help but return to it thanks to her voice.
Another Cup of Coffee For The Road was my intro.
Unfair.. natural good looks and the voice of an angel. Storms pretty well too. Grrrr
Saw Emmylou sometime in the late 70's in San Francisco. Was already a fan but seeing her live immediately cemented my adoration for this very special talent. Beautiful and distinct voice from an equally beautiful and unique woman.
I graduated high school in 1976.. all my friends and I loved her
Always loved Emmylou, I think part of it is that my mom, especially when she was younger, had a striking resemblance
I have to say that your knowledge, insight & research in your videos are amazing, I learn so much from your comments and appreciate it immensely, well done brother, great work!
Albert Lee makes everything sound awesome, "Easy From Now On " with Carlene Carter is so perfect!!
I just found this channel, I'm loving it and learning so many cool and interesting stuff. Great!
👍
Saw her at the Milwaukee Sommerfest in 1987. Breathtaking and beguiling. Although country is not really my thing I found myself dancing with 20-80 year olds in the aisles (and being told to sit down by the ushers).
Really great, would have guessed studio recording if not for video. Such a pleasure to see such restrained, confident playing. Thank you for the history, Fil, very interesting as always.
Thanks Fil...I was not that familiar with Emmylou's music..that is why I love your videos...I get to hear and learn about all the artists I would normally pass by😊
I do know Emmylou has beautiful white hair now❤
So great! Quarter Moon in a ten-cent Town was a great album too
Right on
Later, Emmylou had another great lead guitarist with her band.
Voice is like no other, I have many favorite singers but she is in a category by her self;
such Purity of Tone and sound And everything she sings;
just beautiful 👍🏼🎶🎵🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Thank you and file for analyzing this terrific artist
Rodney Crowell (singing next to Emmylou) and Emmylou wrote that song in a Denver hotel in 15 minutes.
Memphis Sommers A Rodney Crowell analysis would be good. Bluebird Wine perhaps.
Rodney is a brilliant songwriter. I was waiting for someone to give him some love.
Fantastic!
Dolores Oriordan had that special voice too.
@@michele21auntiem Never heard of her. I'll check it out. Thanks
Thank you for this reaction; never heard this song before... but wow! Was in my head all day;)
I didn't appreciate her beauty or her musical skills nearly enough as a teen! Shes gorgeous!
Just another of my '70s crushes. Beautiful, talented, sang like an angel.
For me it's in admiration of her talent....;o)
Her background vocals she did over the years for Linda Ronstadt, among others, show her willingness not to always be in the spotlight.
Well, I grew up in Tulsa (1960's) so - add the fact that I've loved Emmylou for years - so pleased for your fabulous reaction and analysis. Thanks !
You are trawling through the Trio❤️❤️
Thank you. Emmy Lou is the magic and the band is so talented.
The Trio version of After the Gold rush is mystic. So you still have to do Dolly🕊
The guy next to her, Rodney Crowell wrote Shame on the moon, a song sung by Bob Seager. Please react to it. Such a beautiful song.
Hellooooooh Fil, what's up man? All your uploads are awesome. Thanks for sharing 💗
Emily Lou and Gram Parsons are amazing. RIP Gram.
Their voices together are magic.
Albert Lee has a giant talent and has done very well in the music biz. Emmy was a beautiful sweet voiced lady
Still is!
@@timgelder4263 , still is ---- on both counts! Lovely voice, and even with white hair she's still beautiful.
The subtle tightness of this band and the harmonies between the lead and the backing vocals good lord what an amazing track. I saw Rodney Crowell in a small theater in Texas play solo over the last few years goodness the writing the voice and the playing so good.
