Nice duet! So many artists have covered this beautiful Townes Van Zandt song, and this cover was well done by Don and Emmylou.

Two of the smoothest voices in country music!

This song was from Emmylou's album "Cimarron" (which is my favorite Emmylou album)! This is also my favorite song from that album and there are days that I will turn this song on and listen to it on repeat! I also just saw Emmylou in concert 2 weeks ago! Still sounds great! I also recommend "Another Lonesome Morning" from Emmylou from "Cimarron."

I enjoyed this one simply because it has been on my play list for summer time now. I love this cover and Emmylou has always been to of any list for me. A real smooth song.

Nice selection. You can't go wrong with Don and Emmylou. I do wish the radio had played more Emmylou. She had such a sweet and listenable voice. This song was released in 1981 as the first single from Emmylou's album Cimarron. The song peaked at #3 on the Billboard chart. Thanks for the reaction

@@jcat__ "If I Needed You" from the 1981
      album, "Cimarron" which Emmylou Harris
did this for Warner Bros. Records. Here,
she did a lovely duet with Don Williams.
      Strings arranged by Charles Cochran.
But this song was released in 1981 as the
first single from the album - "Cimarron"

I love this song. Don Williams has been a favorite of mine and my husband's 70s 80s . Don reminds me of my husband. When I hear him.

Another great song written by Townes Van Zandt. Guy Clark said one morning him & his wife Susanna were eating breakfast. Townes came in & said he woke up in the middle of the night & wrote down the lyrics to a new song. He sung it to them as they ate breakfast. It was If I Needed You.

Emmylou is my vote for greatest female vocalist ever. At least my favorite anyway.

I'm sorry to have commented so late! I've been out of it for a couple of days, but wanted to say how much I love this song by Don & Emmylou. It's always on my play list and it takes me to a place I love to be...comforted and at peace. Thank you for the request and your wonderful reaction, Don!

Shout out to banjo man 74 for a great request. Don: I always try to guess your finale rating by how you react during and after the song has finished. When you start gushing about a song, I’m thinking, he is rating this a 10. As you said, some of you will think I am going to rate the song a 10. Goes to show us how special a 10 rating is from you.

Hi Ed - well, a 10 is especially special, but this one is a 10 for me. It's on my "comfort" play list. I had no idea Don had never reacted to it or I would have requested it long ago! Have a great rest of your weekend, Ed. Great to read your comments, as always!

Hey Phyllis, It is always a pleasure to read your kind words. Thank you! I totally agree with your assessment. A well written song that is easy on the ears. Don’s and Emmylou’s voices blended very well together. May you have a wonderful rest of your weekend as well. Be well my friend.
