Ann Wilson is the most iconic, most powerful, and best ever female rock singer in history. She brought Robert Plant to tears when Heart (along with Jason Bonham - son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham) performed a truly amazing tribute version of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors Led Zeppelin. No other artist could have pulled that off the way she did! Heart is, without doubt, the best female rock duo in history!

Isn't it strange that Heart released 2 albums in the early 80's ('Private audition' and 'Passionworks') and neither album sold commercially... but when Heart changed labels, got an "image makeover" for MTV and had some outside songwriters contribute to Heart's 1985 self-titled album, it charted at #1 and sold 5 million copies in the US?

In the 80s, there was a move to make Heart a more relevant band as they were in the 70s, so they brought in professional song writers to produce more pop based music for the band. Although Ann didn't like the songs, they ended up becoming some of their best hits..

And I never heard one on the radio. The first time I ever heard Allies was in a movie theater, waiting for the movie to start. I knew it was Ann immediately but I had to wait to go to the record store to find out which album it was on and then buy it. Mid 80s, pre-internet, lol!

Fun fact: this song was originally written and demoed by Canadian AOR masters Toronto, but never made it to an album because the band's managament thought "it was not the right time in their career to release a power ballad". The great disagreement within the band about this decision was one of the reasons why Toronto broke up shortly afterwards. Some time later, Heart's management stumbled upon the song, bought it, and let Heart record it. "What about love" became a colossal hit single for Heart, helping propel their eponymous "Heart" album to the Billboard #1 spot in 1985. Not unsurprisingly, the original demo version has since been released on "best of" compilations with Toronto.

Unquestionably one of the best voices to ever grace the stage. I have been rockin out since the mid 60's, which means I've done a lot of listening, and Heart is right up there in my top ten favorite bands if all time. I like a lot of their stuff that didn't get any radio play, mostly because the songs that did were so good that side B was drowned out by them at the time. But they really never recorded a bad song. If you want to hear the softer side of Ann I would recommend "How deep it goes" from the Dreamboat Annie album. She delivers it in a way that will penetrate your emotions, not with her smooth ride across so many octaves, but with a profound tenderness that provides a glimpse of her true soul.

During the Vietnam war, the boys in the band became draft dodgers, scootin’ across the border north of Seattle, and settled down in Vancouver BC. Ann soon followed the band and Nancy wasn’t far behind. It was in Vancouver where they honed their skills and became loved world over. Just before fame hit, they played the club and high school scene. I was lucky enough to have seen Heart at one of our high school dances. A young Ann and Nancy just rocked it.

The song was written by Sheron Alton (who like Nancy plays guitar) and Brian Allen of the group Toronto, who never released the song as a single. Toronto would be another group lead by 2 females leads; singer Holly Woods, that you should check out. This ended up being Heart's comeback single, back as serious hit makers in the 80s

This was a comeback of sorts for Heart who had not had a hit in a few years. It was suggested to Ann that she should hold back on her voice and let things build before she unleashed what we all now know as that incredible voice of Ann Wilson with that incredible range. Fun Fact: Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas from "Starship" provide backup vocals on this song.

BTW - I'm still suggesting Band Maid - an ALL female rock band. Not to mention - the best rock band out right now!
Check out any of these songs by them - Thrill, Dice, Manners or Bubble!

This is my favorite Heart song of them all. Ann's singing just blows me away, as does the rest of the band. I guess this could be the prime example of the class "power ballad".
